From 131d18d9fcf4d2624867f6a57ed00e0c32860be8 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Eason Liang Date: Thu, 27 Aug 2026 10:40:53 +0800 Subject: [PATCH 01/16] feat(file-safety): add version token for the guarded-write path (A1, #1375) Introduces the version token - dev:ino:size:mtimeNs:ctimeNs derived from a single fs.stat - a pure function of a file's on-disk state that every process computing from the same state agrees on. The compare-and-swap write guard (A2/A3) will compare the token observed at read time against the token recomputed before a write to detect stale or replaced files. No production callers yet: this is infrastructure for the file-write safety series (plan: easonLiangWorldedtech/Zoo-Code#33), part of upstream epic #1375. --- src/utils/__tests__/versionToken.spec.ts | 103 +++++++++++++++++++++++ src/utils/versionToken.ts | 57 +++++++++++++ 2 files changed, 160 insertions(+) create mode 100644 src/utils/__tests__/versionToken.spec.ts create mode 100644 src/utils/versionToken.ts diff --git a/src/utils/__tests__/versionToken.spec.ts b/src/utils/__tests__/versionToken.spec.ts new file mode 100644 index 0000000000..56ce269244 --- /dev/null +++ b/src/utils/__tests__/versionToken.spec.ts @@ -0,0 +1,103 @@ +import * as fs from "fs/promises" +import * as os from "os" +import * as path from "path" +import type { Stats } from "fs" +import { afterEach, beforeEach, describe, expect, it } from "vitest" + +import { computeVersionToken, versionTokenOfStat } from "../versionToken" + +// Stats is a class-backed interface without a public constructor, so a plain-object +// test double is the only practical way to pin the token format without real files. +// Last-resort double assertion (test-local, per AGENTS.md). +function makeStats(overrides: Partial = {}): Stats { + const base: Partial = { + dev: 7, + ino: 4242, + size: 1234, + atimeMs: 1_700_000_000_000, + mtimeMs: 1_700_000_000_123.456, + ctimeMs: 1_700_000_000_789.999, + birthtimeMs: 1_700_000_000_000, + } + return { ...base, ...overrides } as unknown as Stats +} + +describe("versionTokenOfStat (A1, epic #1375)", () => { + it("is deterministic for an identical stat", () => { + expect(versionTokenOfStat(makeStats())).toBe(versionTokenOfStat(makeStats())) + }) + + it("matches the documented dev:ino:size:mtimeNs:ctimeNs format", () => { + const expected = [ + "7", + "4242", + "1234", + Math.round(1_700_000_000_123.456 * 1e6).toString(), + Math.round(1_700_000_000_789.999 * 1e6).toString(), + ].join(":") + expect(versionTokenOfStat(makeStats())).toBe(expected) + }) + + it("distinguishes size changes at identical timestamps", () => { + expect(versionTokenOfStat(makeStats({ size: 1235 }))).not.toBe(versionTokenOfStat(makeStats())) + }) + + it("distinguishes mtime changes at identical size", () => { + expect(versionTokenOfStat(makeStats({ mtimeMs: 1_700_000_000_124 }))).not.toBe(versionTokenOfStat(makeStats())) + }) + + it("distinguishes a replaced file (dev/ino change) with identical content state", () => { + const replaced = makeStats({ dev: 8, ino: 999 }) + expect(versionTokenOfStat(replaced)).not.toBe(versionTokenOfStat(makeStats())) + }) + + it("preserves sub-ms mtime resolution in the ns field", () => { + const wholeMs = versionTokenOfStat(makeStats({ mtimeMs: 1_700_000_000_123 })) + const halfMsLater = versionTokenOfStat(makeStats({ mtimeMs: 1_700_000_000_123.5 })) + expect(halfMsLater).not.toBe(wholeMs) + // 0.5 ms = 500_000 ns. Node exposes ino as a float64 number: exact for small POSIX inode numbers, but on modern Windows the file ID exceeds 2^53 so Node's own value is already rounded (verified on node v25: non-zero ino, isSafeInteger=false). It remains deterministic per file (same file -> same token), so the token contract is unchanged; change detection rests on exact dev/size plus the mtime/ctime ns fields. Fixed by fetching the stat with { bigint: true }: all five token fields (dev, ino, size, mtimeNs, ctimeNs) are exact BigInt values rendered as decimal strings, with no float anywhere. The sub-ms test now asserts an exact 1_000 ns delta instead of bounded drift, and a regression test pins a size of 10^16+1 (> Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER). --- src/utils/__tests__/versionToken.spec.ts | 82 ++++++++++++------------ src/utils/versionToken.ts | 62 +++++++----------- 2 files changed, 65 insertions(+), 79 deletions(-) diff --git a/src/utils/__tests__/versionToken.spec.ts b/src/utils/__tests__/versionToken.spec.ts index 56ce269244..3e2ca26b5c 100644 --- a/src/utils/__tests__/versionToken.spec.ts +++ b/src/utils/__tests__/versionToken.spec.ts @@ -1,25 +1,33 @@ import * as fs from "fs/promises" import * as os from "os" import * as path from "path" -import type { Stats } from "fs" +import type { BigIntStats } from "fs" import { afterEach, beforeEach, describe, expect, it } from "vitest" import { computeVersionToken, versionTokenOfStat } from "../versionToken" -// Stats is a class-backed interface without a public constructor, so a plain-object -// test double is the only practical way to pin the token format without real files. -// Last-resort double assertion (test-local, per AGENTS.md). -function makeStats(overrides: Partial = {}): Stats { - const base: Partial = { - dev: 7, - ino: 4242, - size: 1234, - atimeMs: 1_700_000_000_000, - mtimeMs: 1_700_000_000_123.456, - ctimeMs: 1_700_000_000_789.999, - birthtimeMs: 1_700_000_000_000, +// BigIntStats is a class-backed interface without a public constructor, so a +// plain-object test double is the only practical way to pin the token format +// without real files. Task.spec.ts now builds a parent and a child through the constructor (startTask: false, no API traffic) and asserts that the child points at the parent, carries the parent's taskId as both parentTaskId and rootTaskId, owns a different registry object, holds its own token for the same path, and that forgetting the child's entry leaves the parent's intact. One factual note recorded in the test: Task accepts a rootTask option and derives rootTaskId from it, but never assigns the rootTask object field - ClineProvider.ts:3459 reads that field and ClineProvider.spec.ts:1931 patches it by hand - so the test asserts the id link the constructor actually establishes rather than pretending the object link exists. The token is now taken before the read and recorded only after the read succeeds, on the native and the legacy path alike, through one file-local helper so the two paths cannot drift apart - the two blocks were character-identical once comments are stripped, which I diffed line by line before folding them together. The direction is a deliberate choice: a mutation during the read now yields a token that mismatches and blocks the guarded write, which is the conservative answer for a guard. The pinning test mutates the file inside the read so the pre-read and post-read tokens differ, and names which one the tool may record; with the stat moved back after the read it reddens - expected '1:2:300:4000000000:5000000000', received '1:2:300:9000000000:5000000000' - and the implementation is restored from a saved copy (hash 7053a7861143cb42dd9a0dc0bd3f1a83115d0007 before and after the control). Also strengthens the assertions review flagged, with no behaviour change: observe assertions compare the resolved full path instead of a substring, so a call made with the relative path can no longer pass (native site and both legacy sites); the beforeEach stat mock now returns the BigIntStats shape the tool reads, because the partial double made computeVersionToken throw a TypeError that its .catch swallowed, laundering a mock gap into "no token"; the stale-entry test arms the stat failure on the call that passes { bigint: true }, the only call that does, instead of on call parity; and the registry test pins the exact observedAt under a fake clock instead of accepting any number, which both 0 and NaN satisfied. Measured: readFileTool.spec.ts + observationRegistry.spec.ts 102 passed, Task.spec.ts 201 passed, check-types 11/11 exit 0, root lint exit 0, eslint clean on the touched files, and test:solheim-smoke-ci fails identically with these files reverted to the merge commit, so its red is pre-existing on this merge and not caused here. No production behaviour changes: ReadFileTool.ts and Task.ts are untouched, and observationRegistry.ts changes only in its header comment, so no new observable scope is introduced here and no suppression count moves. Row 4488930500 (ReadFileTool.ts:781) asked whether the legacy path needs the ordering test the native path has, and whether any test fails if that stat moves after the read. Measured before changing anything: moving the legacy computeVersionToken below fs.readFile leaves the suite at 94 passed (94) on this branch head - blind, exactly as the reviewer supposed. The new case reuses the native ordering fixture (a file that mutates mid-read, so the pre-read and post-read tokens differ) through the typed legacy params. Against HEAD production it is green inside 94 passed (94); against the same mutation it is the one case that reddens, 1 failed | 93 passed (94). The shipped legacy path already takes the token first, so this pins an existing promise rather than changing one. Row 4488930516 (readFileTool.spec.ts:2059) asked whether the two-registry independence case can go. It can, and the reason is measured rather than argued: its four assertions - regA.observe then regA.get === v1, regB.get undefined, then regB.observe v2 with regA still v1 and regB v2 - are all present, with the same values, in observationRegistry.spec.ts:88, and Task.spec.ts:1765 pins the same property at the stronger layer with two real Tasks. To check it adds no failure mode I made every ObservationRegistry share one module-level map and ran all three specs: the copy in this file went red, and so did observationRegistry.spec.ts (3 failed | 5 passed) and the Task case (1 failed | 200 passed). Reducing the shared map to nothing therefore loses a duplicate, not coverage: this is a deleted-duplicate, not a deleted-coverage removal, and not a no-op. Row 4488930524 (readFileTool.spec.ts:1815) asked for a shared makeStats helper for the repeated BigIntStats double. The real count is nine, not about seven: eight copies on this head (lines 203, 1719, 1766, 1816, 1855, 1910, 1964, 2030) plus the one this commit adds. All eight are the same dev/ino/size/mtimeNs/ctimeNs values; the two inside mockImplementation differ only in mtimeNs, so the helper takes overrides. It follows versionToken.spec.ts's local makeStats (same single-step downcast from Partial to the full type, with the reason next to the cast) and keeps the double assertion in one place instead of nine; a fs.stat double for a Stats-typed mock is not what src/test-utils/fs.ts holds today, so promoting both copies into test-utils is left as a follow-up rather than widening this commit into a shared file other specs import. Row 4488930528 (observationRegistry.ts:8) asked whether No behavior change in this PR goes stale once S4 reads the registry, and whether the header can keep only the why. It does go stale - the header already names S4 as the phase that will consult these tokens - so the PR-scoped promise is gone and the header now states what the file does today without betting on the PR's own lifespan. Two rows on this PR are left open on purpose: 4488930505 (trackFileContext rejecting) and 4488930532 (has/clear/size). Both change what the registry promises rather than how it is tested, so they are being brought to the merge owner with the measurement before anything moves. Gates, one run against this tree as staged: pnpm --dir src run lint exit 0 with the eslint cache deleted first (the cache location resolves into a junctioned node_modules, so a green after another lane's run can be a cache hit on someone else's tree); tsc --noEmit -p . exit 0 with no diagnostics; eslint --prune-suppressions on both touched files exit 0 with core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts staying at 95 and observationRegistry.ts having no entry to begin with; prettier --check exit 0 on both. Measured first: the premise is not reachable through the shipped object. trackFileContext is src/core/context-tracking/FileContextTracker.ts:81-95 - its whole body sits in a try whose catch only console.errors, and its inner steps have their own swallowing catches - so it cannot reject, and a rejecting double is the only way either read path ever sees one. The row therefore asks what happens at that boundary rather than reporting a bug, and this commit pins the answer on both paths instead of moving production. The two paths answer it differently, and the difference is the part worth writing down. Native: the content is computed but not yet recorded when the tracker call runs, so the per-file catch replaces the pending result with an error row (ReadFileTool.ts:233-241), the turn is marked failed through the hasErrors sweep at 245-248, and observeReadVersion never runs. Legacy: the content is already pushed into the results (ReadFileTool.ts:809), so a rejection leaves the content in the tool result and appends an error row, marks the turn failed at 820, and again skips observeReadVersion. Both cases seed an observation from an earlier read and assert it survives untouched, so the cases name what a skipped observe leaves: the older token, not a refreshed one and not an absence. That leftover points the safe way for the guard this registry is being built for. An older token mismatches a changed file, so a stale entry blocks a later guarded write rather than green-lighting it. The scope limit is worth stating too: if a later change makes trackFileContext able to reject, the ordering stops being incidental and the row's ask becomes real - today it is only reachable behind a double. Controls, all run against this tree before staging: - Moving observeReadVersion above trackFileContext on both paths (the alternative shape, 4 lines changed in ReadFileTool.ts) reddens exactly these two cases and nothing else: 2 failed | 94 passed (96). The cases pin the ordering rather than assert into it. - Making ObservationRegistry.forget return true without deleting reddens the get-based absence assertions this suite relies on: 1 failed | 4 passed (5) in the registry spec and 2 failed | 94 passed (96) here, so those assertions still describe behaviour. - Measured on this commit's own tree, with the parent's registry still exposing has, size and clear: 96 passed (96) here, 8 passed (8) in observationRegistry.spec.ts and 201 passed (201) in Task.spec.ts. Dropping those three accessors is the commit that follows this one, which is why the shape measured here still has them. ReadFileTool.ts is byte-unchanged in this commit; the only staged path is the spec. --- src/core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts | 62 +++++++++++++++++++ 1 file changed, 62 insertions(+) diff --git a/src/core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts b/src/core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts index 066545e142..115d4f9b27 100644 --- a/src/core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts +++ b/src/core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts @@ -1783,6 +1783,68 @@ describe("ReadFileTool", () => { expect(readStarted).toBe(true) }) + it("keeps the earlier observation when the context tracker rejects (native path)", async () => { + // trackFileContext swallows its own failures in production (FileContextTracker.ts:81-95 puts its + // whole body in a try whose catch only console.errors), so a rejection here can only come from + // this double. Measured across src, packages, webview-ui and apps before touching anything: production touches this registry in exactly three places - ReadFileTool.ts:846 (observe), 848 (forget) and Task.ts:303 (constructing it) - and has, clear and size had no production call site anywhere; every access was in a spec (get 15, size 6, has 4, clear 1). has and size are removed. get stays, for a different kind of evidence than a spec calling it: it has a named consumer in the header, the S4 guard that will compare these tokens against the pre-write recomputation. clear goes on a structural argument rather than a count. Task.ts:303 makes the registry a readonly field of the Task, so each Task constructs its own and nothing anywhere clears or disposes one; a per-task instance needs no reset because the next task constructs a new registry. clear would only be meaningful under a design that shares one registry across tasks, which phase S4 has not decided, so the reset lands with whoever needs it and the header says so. The unbounded-map concern points the other way only if a registry outlives its task, and today nothing outlives the task. What each removal cost, stated per case rather than in aggregate: - the has case tested a member that is gone, and its presence claim was already carried by the get assertions in the case above it: that one was a duplicate, not a coverage. - the size case and the clear case tested members that are gone; with no size and no clear there is no behaviour of theirs left to cover, so no observable fact went with them. - the two reg.size === 0 assertions in readFileTool.spec.ts each sat immediately below an assertion that reg.get(observedPath) was undefined and restated it, so they were deleted. - the three assertions written against observationRegistry!.size were rewritten to a get on each case's own path instead of deleted, because the fact they were asserting is that no observation was recorded: in a fresh registry with a single file involved, target-absence is the same fact. The case title that named the registry size was retitled to match what it now asserts, and the two comments that said the registry stays empty now say what that means. Control on the rewrites: making ObservationRegistry.forget return true without deleting reddens them - 1 failed | 4 passed (5) here and 2 failed | 94 passed (96) in readFileTool.spec.ts - so the rewritten assertions describe behaviour rather than merely compiling. The whole core/tools directory passes: Test Files 31 passed (31) Tests 699 passed | 5 skipped (704). readFileTool.spec.ts passes at Test Files 1 passed (1) Tests 96 passed (96) and Task.spec.ts at Test Files 1 passed (1) Tests 201 passed (201), both with the narrowed registry. Suppressions: eslint --prune-suppressions exits 0 on all three files and the entry for core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts stays at 95 - no increase - while observationRegistry.ts and its spec have no entry. Prune rewrites the whole file's indentation (1441 insertions and 1441 deletions with every count unchanged), so the HEAD bytes were restored after probing and this commit carries no suppressions churn. Gates run against this tree before staging: pnpm --dir src run lint exit 0 in 27s with the eslint cache deleted first and rewritten by the run, tsc --noEmit -p . exit 0 with no diagnostics, prettier --check exit 0 on the three files. ReadFileTool.ts and Task.ts are untouched. --- .../__tests__/observationRegistry.spec.ts | 28 +------------------ src/core/task/observationRegistry.ts | 17 ++++------- src/core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts | 14 ++++------ 3 files changed, 12 insertions(+), 47 deletions(-) diff --git a/src/core/task/__tests__/observationRegistry.spec.ts b/src/core/task/__tests__/observationRegistry.spec.ts index 127a0b4327..f1b0fa4d5b 100644 --- a/src/core/task/__tests__/observationRegistry.spec.ts +++ b/src/core/task/__tests__/observationRegistry.spec.ts @@ -40,13 +40,6 @@ describe("ObservationRegistry", () => { } }) - it("has returns true for observed paths, false otherwise", () => { - const reg = new ObservationRegistry() - reg.observe("/x.ts", "t1") - expect(reg.has("/x.ts")).toBe(true) - expect(reg.has("/y.ts")).toBe(false) - }) - it("forget drops a warm entry so a later read cannot be guarded by a stale token", () => { const reg = new ObservationRegistry() reg.observe("/x.ts", "t1") @@ -54,30 +47,11 @@ describe("ObservationRegistry", () => { // The warm case: an entry from an earlier read must not survive a read that could not // compute a token for the current on-disk version. expect(reg.forget("/x.ts")).toBe(true) - expect(reg.has("/x.ts")).toBe(false) expect(reg.get("/x.ts")).toBeUndefined() // The cold case: forgetting an unobserved path is a no-op, not an error. expect(reg.forget("/y.ts")).toBe(false) - expect(reg.size).toBe(0) - }) - - it("size reflects the number of observed entries", () => { - const reg = new ObservationRegistry() - expect(reg.size).toBe(0) - reg.observe("/a.ts", "t1") - reg.observe("/b.ts", "t2") - expect(reg.size).toBe(2) - }) - - it("clear removes all entries and resets size to 0", () => { - const reg = new ObservationRegistry() - reg.observe("/a.ts", "t1") - reg.observe("/b.ts", "t2") - reg.clear() - expect(reg.size).toBe(0) - expect(reg.get("/a.ts")).toBeUndefined() - expect(reg.has("/b.ts")).toBe(false) + expect(reg.get("/y.ts")).toBeUndefined() }) it("get on empty registry returns undefined", () => { diff --git a/src/core/task/observationRegistry.ts b/src/core/task/observationRegistry.ts index 4c833e0c39..b01baacc00 100644 --- a/src/core/task/observationRegistry.ts +++ b/src/core/task/observationRegistry.ts @@ -7,6 +7,11 @@ * * Pure in-memory — zero I/O, no dependencies.
