docs(api): CRD description proposal, its review, and its implementation - #448
Stacked on #447. The proposal, the review that shaped it, and its implementation: the CRD
descriptions change, and no schema, validation, default, or behavior does.
Why this PR exists
This PR shows what AI writing alone produces, and what changes once a person reviews it and two
assistants check each other's work. The proposal is committed three times, once per stage, so the
diffs between commits show exactly what the review changed.
Commit
Who
What
First draft
Codex, unreviewed
An editorial proposal for the CRD descriptions, with ten example rewrites
Facts page
Claude, asked by Simon to review the draft
Tested the draft's main assumption instead of reasoning about it, and wrote down what it found
Revision
Codex, given the review
Took in the findings
Final
Claude, asked by Simon to recheck and improve
Found two more errors and finished the document
Simon's part was the questions: "what do you think?", "recheck it", "improve it". He also decided
what was worth keeping as durable reference in docs/facts/.
What the review found that the draft missed
The draft's main suggestion had never been tested. It proposed bullets inside CRD
descriptions and flagged that "no rendering test has been performed". Claude started an envtest
API server and ran kubectl explain. Bullets render fine. The real problem was one the draft
never mentioned: kubectl explain keeps every line break and wraps each line again at 76
characters, so 616 of the 1,067 current description lines print with stray words on lines
of their own. The draft's own examples had the same defect. Fixing the line width now comes
before any change to structure.
Its Argo CD condition rewrite missed a case.InControl can also be False with reason ArgoCDVersionNotSupported.
Two of its ten items were already done.onRefusal and serializeNamespace already have
one paragraph per value, even though the draft listed them as dense text. They are now optional.
It claimed to keep every template field but dropped two. Its liveTemplate rewrite left
out Kind, Labels, and the Label accessor. The current CRD text omits them too.
It paraphrased Flux too broadly. Flux's style guide says to put related items that must
appear in a specific order into a list. The draft cited it as support for lists in general.
The draft's behavior corrections all held up against the source: the CommitRequest message, lastVerifiedAt, and the grant-list semantics.
Changes
docs/review/20261025-crd-text-proposal.md: the proposal, in three commits.
docs/facts/crd-descriptions-in-kubectl-explain.md: how kubectl explain renders a
description, with an envtest recipe to reproduce it. Also behavior a description must not
misstate, and Flux's writing style guide as a reference. Linked from docs/INDEX.md.
.devcontainer/devcontainer.json: pins the Codex extension to 26.1007.21434. Its webview never
renders in this devcontainer on 26.1021.22027 (renderer_ready_timeout). The panel last
worked about six hours before that release, and it worked again right after the rollback.
Implementation
The proposal is implemented on top of the review commits, one commit per step of its
implementation order:
Commit
What
docs(api): correct the CRD descriptions that misstate behavior
Proposal items 1 to 3 and 7, both watch-rule objectSelector fields, and the Flux claim's InControl
docs(api): rewrap the CRD descriptions at 76 characters
Line breaks only. git diff --word-diff shows no changed words, and each file's comment word stream is identical before and after
chore(lint): keep API doc comments within 76 characters
lint-api-doc-width in task lint (hack/apidocwidth), and the limit in the AGENTS.md house style
docs(api): list the choices in grant and receiver descriptions
Items 4 to 6
docs(api): split the long CRD descriptions by topic
The "Remaining pass" table
docs(flux): give repeated ClaimedResourceReconciled events a section
Item 8, the "Overriding by hand" bullet, and the UPGRADING.md row
docs(api): list the serializeNamespace choices as bullets
Optional item 10
After every commit that touched api/, the CRDs were regenerated into a scratch directory and
compared with the pre-edit ones with every description key removed from both: identical each
time, so no marker moved.
kubectl explain, before and after
gittarget.spec.serializeNamespace, before:
SerializeNamespace decides whether a namespaced resource's document carries
metadata.namespace. It applies to every write, not just the first, and is
ignored for
cluster-scoped resources.
Omitted, it is decided per document: the namespace is left out only when the
kustomization
governing the document's path sets namespace: to that same namespace. This
suits a folder of
nested kustomize roots that each set their own namespace.
true always writes it. Use it for a flat folder applied as is.
false never writes it, for a folder whose namespace something else supplies:
a Flux
Kustomization's targetNamespace, an Argo CD Application's
destination.namespace, or a
kustomization. Such a folder holds one source namespace; a WatchRule
bringing a second one is
refused with GitPathAccepted=False, reason MultipleSourceNamespaces.
After:
SerializeNamespace decides whether a namespaced resource's document
carries metadata.namespace. It applies to every write, not just the
first, and is ignored for cluster-scoped resources.
- Omitted: decided per document. The namespace is left out only when the
kustomization governing the document's path sets namespace: to that
same namespace. This suits a folder of nested kustomize roots that each
set their own namespace.
- true: always written. Use it for a flat folder applied as is.
- false: never written, for a folder whose namespace something else
supplies: a Flux Kustomization's targetNamespace, an Argo CD
Application's destination.namespace, or a kustomization.
With false, the folder holds one source namespace. A WatchRule bringing a
second one is refused with GitPathAccepted=False, reason
MultipleSourceNamespaces.
gitbranch.spec.allowedGitTargets, before:
AllowedGitTargets says which GitTargets may write through this GitBranch.
Omitted, it is one
grant for this namespace (consumerNamespaces: {from: Same}). A written list
is the whole
policy, so it admits this namespace only if a grant says so, and [] admits
nobody. Grants
combine by union.
After:
AllowedGitTargets says which GitTargets may write through this GitBranch:
- Omitted: the GitTargets in this GitBranch's namespace, as one grant
with from: "Same".
- Empty list ([]): no GitTarget.
- A list of grants: the GitTargets that at least one grant allows.
A list replaces the default, so it needs a grant with from: "Same" for
the GitTargets in this namespace to keep access.
Where the implementation departs from the proposal
Each of these was checked against the code, which wins where the two disagree.
The width check reads api/, not config/crd/bases. After the rewrap, 149 description
lines in the CRDs are still wider than 76. All of them come from upstream types that
controller-gen copies in: metav1.Condition, LabelSelector, the root apiVersion and kind, and Flux's object references. This repository cannot rewrap them, so a check over the
CRDs could never pass. The Go doc comments hold exactly the descriptions written here, and a
finding names the file and line. The check measures type and field doc comments only and skips
marker lines; it would have reported 533 lines before the rewrap.
liveTemplate (item 7) lists more than the proposal did. It adds the LabelValues and LabelValue accessors, which docs/commit-messages.md documents and the proposal also left
out. It also says that Namespace is "_cluster" for a cluster-scoped resource, and that {{.Labels.key}} fails the commit for a resource without the label: the templates render with missingkey=error.
ArgoCDClaimInControl (item 3) gives a reason for every False. The draft had a bare False for releasing, revoking, and not referenced. Unknown/NotConfigured also covers
another claim holding the Application (heldElsewhere), and a failed read keeps the previous
value. FluxClaimInControl gets the same treatment: Suspended, Applying, Suspending, Releasing, Revoking, NotReferenced, NotConfigured.
The objectSelector fields name the conflict reason. The current text said only that the
newer rule "is refused". The rule store refuses it with ResourcesResolved=False, reason CollectionOverlap, and the older rule keeps the type.
CommitRequest.spec.message (item 1) says tabs are rejected. The pattern excludes \x09,
so only newlines are allowed.
lastVerifiedAt (item 2) was wrong in a user doc too.docs/configuration.md said Ready=False beside it reads as "broken for this long". It now says the timestamp shows when the
provider last worked, and that a signing-key or Secret problem can stop the check entirely.
knownHostsRef names --insecure-allow-missing-known-hosts. "Without valid keys, SSH
fails" does not hold when the installation sets that flag.
parentBranch names the GitProvider. It said "spec.allowedGitBranches" without saying
whose. It also says ParentBranchNotFound is a Stalled=True reason.
The claim root descriptions list the apply triggers by ApplyReason. ForeignCommit,
Refusal, Repair, and CatchUp, which also covers startup and a GitTarget first naming the claim.
The Flux section names flux resume as the ordinary cause of repeated ClaimedResourceReconciled events, before the whole-spec Update case.
Item 9 (onRefusal) is skipped. With its lines fixed, it renders as two clear paragraphs;
the Reapply restrictions read better as prose than as a long bullet. Item 10
(serializeNamespace) is done: its paragraphs opened with a bare lowercase true and false.
"admits" became "allows" only in the fields this PR restructured. Other grant fields still
say "admits"; changing the verb everywhere would have widened the diff past the proposal.
One rendering detail the proposal did not mention: for an array field, kubectl explain prints
the item type's description right after the field's, with no blank line between them
(...keep access. then GitBranchGitTargetGrant admits ...). Those item type comments are worth
a pass of their own.
Validation
task fmt, task generate, task manifests, task vet, task lint, and task test pass.
Local task test-e2e passes: 109 specs run, 0 failed (59 skipped by the default label filter).
The first attempt failed in BeforeSuite on a wedged k3d cluster; task clean-cluster and a
rerun fixed it.
Expanded the README with clearer overviews of GitOps Reverser, supported repository layouts, commit windows, adoption, and operational constraints.
Clarified configuration and resource behavior, including selector handling, access grants, status conditions, commit templates, and Flux troubleshooting.
Added guidance for upgrading configurations that use legacy template fields.
Chores
Added an automated check for API documentation line width to the lint workflow.
The proposal as Codex wrote it, before any review: an editorial pass
over the ten v1alpha3 CRDs with ten example rewrites. Kept unchanged
so the commits that follow show what review changed.

Measured against an envtest API server with kubectl v1.37.1:
controller-gen keeps the Go comment's line breaks, and kubectl explain
keeps them too, then wraps each line again at 76 characters of text.
A longer line leaves its last words on a line of their own; 616 of the
1,067 current description lines are longer. Bullets render as bullets.
Also records behavior a description must not misstate (the
requestTemplate wrap, lastVerifiedAt, every InControl status and
reason, the grant-list defaults), an envtest recipe to reproduce the
rendering, and Flux's documentation style guide as a reference.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Codex's revision after Claude's review: adds the missing InControl
reason ArgoCDVersionNotSupported, marks the onRefusal and
serializeNamespace rewrites optional because those fields already give
each value its own paragraph, adds the 76-character wrap as a writing
rule ahead of any bullet changes, and drops the generic review sections.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Ranks the kubectl explain line width as risk 2, since it affects more
of the text than any other finding. Adds Kind, Labels, and the Label
accessor to the liveTemplate rewrite, which claimed to keep every field
but dropped them. Names Argo CD before 3.1 in the version reason,
quotes Flux's list advice as written (ordered items only), and makes
the rewrap its own commit with a lint check so it stays fixed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
On 26.1021.22027 the Codex webview never renders in the devcontainer:
every start logs renderer_ready_timeout after 30s. The panel last
rendered about six hours before that release was published, and it
rendered again right after rolling back to 26.1007.21434. A bare
openai.chatgpt installs the latest release on every container start, so
a rebuild would bring the broken one back.

CommitRequest.spec.message now says a GitTarget's requestTemplate can wrap
it. GitProvider.status.lastVerifiedAt no longer claims to show how long a
connection has been broken: it records the last success only.
Both claim kinds list InControl by status and reason. ArgoCDClaim gains the
False/ArgoCDVersionNotSupported and False/NotConfigured cases it omitted.
liveTemplate lists Kind, Labels, the Label accessor, and the LabelValues
and LabelValue accessors. Both watch-rule objectSelector fields name the
GitTarget's spec.prune.mode and the CollectionOverlap reason.

kubectl explain keeps each line break of a description and wraps every
line again at 76 characters of text, so a longer line leaves its last words
on a line of their own. This rewraps every type and field doc comment in
api/v1alpha3 that had a longer line, and changes no words:
git diff --word-diff shows only moved line breaks.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
lint-api-doc-width, part of task lint, fails on any type or field doc
comment line in api/ wider than 76 characters after the comment prefix:
kubectl explain keeps each line break of a description and wraps every
line again, so a wider line leaves its last words on a line of their own.
It reads the Go source rather than config/crd/bases. The CRDs also carry
descriptions controller-gen copies from upstream types, such as
metav1.Condition and LabelSelector, and about 150 of those lines are wider
than 76 with no way to rewrap them here. The source holds exactly the
descriptions this repository writes, and a finding names the file and line.
The task has rooted sources, so a second task lint run finds it cached, as
CI asserts. AGENTS.md gains the limit in its CRD house style.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
ConsumerNamespaces.from and GitReceiver.spec.type give each value its own
bullet. GitBranch.spec.allowedGitTargets and both KubeProvider grant lists
separate the omitted, empty, and explicit cases, and keep their defaults
for source namespaces and applier namespaces. GitProvider.spec.allowedGitBranches
is unchanged: omitted and empty both deny every GitBranch there.
AGENTS.md says when to use bullets in a CRD description.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Both claim kinds lead with control of apply timing and list what starts an
apply. GitTarget.spec.placement separates existing documents, path
variables, and fallbacks; spec.suspend separates stopping, the last push,
and resuming; spec.prune.mode gives each mode a bullet, the default first.
GitBranch.spec.parentBranch separates the default from a missing parent and
names the GitProvider whose allowedGitBranches it means. GitProvider's
knownHostsRef numbers its three sources and names the flag that permits
missing host keys. KubeProvider's auditRoute separates which namespace owns
a route from the conflict it causes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The troubleshooting row kept the symptom, cause, ownership detail and fix
in one table cell. The row now links to a section of its own, which names
flux resume as the ordinary cause before the whole-spec Update case. The
flux resume bullet under Overriding by hand states the unchecked apply and
the claim's response in separate sentences, and the UPGRADING entry for the
removed message templates separates the removal, client behavior and the
migration.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The omitted, true and false cases each get a bullet, so no paragraph opens
with a bare lowercase literal, and the one-source-namespace rule for false
follows the list. GitTarget.spec.onRefusal keeps its paragraphs: it has two
values, and the restrictions on "Reapply" read better as prose.

Qualify when AuditFactsReceived remains True.
When status.auditRoute changes, this file says the condition starts over. The statement that it “never goes back” tells operators the opposite. State that True persists only for the current route, and that a route change resets the condition. Update the generated description in config/crd/bases/configbutler.ai_kubeproviders.yaml as well.
As per coding guidelines, “Keep CRD descriptions to the contract.”

This page dates its measurement to commit 0b8334eb, but “currently” presents that result as the state after this PR’s description rewrites. Say that most descriptions at that commit rendered with stray words. Make the same distinction in “Most of the current text is too wide” at Line 40. Do not assign a grouped declaration’s comment to each type.
If a long comment precedes type (...) and its members have no individual doc comments, this fallback reports the group comment once per member. TestCheckFile_ReadsAGroupedTypeSpecsOwnDoc identifies that comment as not belonging to an individual type. This can fail task lint for text the check does not intend to measure. Use gen.Doc only for an ungrouped type declaration. Controller-tools likewise treats comments on a grouped declaration separately from type-spec comments. (github.com)

Use third-person voice and remove the unsupported "secure" claim in the managed-service paragraph.
The paragraph uses "we" and "our". The style guide says to avoid "we" outside design records, and this README section is not a design record. The word "secure" is not on the guide's banned list, but the guide's "Do not sell" and concrete-claim rules apply because the adjective names no property. Remove the adjective rather than invent authorization controls the README does not describe.

Review comment at @README.md around lines 180 - 181:
Update the managed-service paragraph about ConfigButler operating GitOps
Reverser to use third-person voice instead of “we” and “our,” and remove the
unsupported “secure” adjective without adding claims about authorization
controls.

Simon's part was the questions: "what do you think?", "recheck it", "improve it". He also decided
what was worth keeping as durable reference in
docs/facts/.What the review found that the draft missed
descriptions and flagged that "no rendering test has been performed". Claude started an envtest
API server and ran
kubectl explain. Bullets render fine. The real problem was one the draftnever mentioned:
kubectl explainkeeps every line break and wraps each line again at 76characters, so 616 of the 1,067 current description lines print with stray words on lines
of their own. The draft's own examples had the same defect. Fixing the line width now comes
before any change to structure.
InControlcan also beFalsewith reasonArgoCDVersionNotSupported.onRefusalandserializeNamespacealready haveone paragraph per value, even though the draft listed them as dense text. They are now optional.
liveTemplaterewrite leftout
Kind,Labels, and theLabelaccessor. The current CRD text omits them too.appear in a specific order into a list. The draft cited it as support for lists in general.
The draft's behavior corrections all held up against the source: the CommitRequest message,
lastVerifiedAt, and the grant-list semantics.Changes
docs/review/20261025-crd-text-proposal.md: the proposal, in three commits.docs/facts/crd-descriptions-in-kubectl-explain.md: howkubectl explainrenders adescription, with an envtest recipe to reproduce it. Also behavior a description must not
misstate, and Flux's writing style guide as a reference. Linked from
docs/INDEX.md..devcontainer/devcontainer.json: pins the Codex extension to26.1007.21434. Its webview neverrenders in this devcontainer on

Implementation
The proposal is implemented on top of the review commits, one commit per step of its
implementation order:
docs(api): correct the CRD descriptions that misstate behaviorobjectSelectorfields, and the Flux claim'sInControldocs(api): rewrap the CRD descriptions at 76 charactersgit diff --word-diffshows no changed words, and each file's comment word stream is identical before and afterchore(lint): keep API doc comments within 76 characterslint-api-doc-widthintask lint(hack/apidocwidth), and the limit in the AGENTS.md house styledocs(api): list the choices in grant and receiver descriptionsdocs(api): split the long CRD descriptions by topicdocs(flux): give repeated ClaimedResourceReconciled events a sectionUPGRADING.mdrowdocs(api): list the serializeNamespace choices as bulletsAfter every commit that touched
api/, the CRDs were regenerated into a scratch directory andcompared with the pre-edit ones with every
descriptionkey removed from both: identical eachtime, so no marker moved.
kubectl explain, before and aftergittarget.spec.serializeNamespace, before:After:

Where the implementation departs from the proposal
Each of these was checked against the code, which wins where the two disagree.
api/, notconfig/crd/bases. After the rewrap, 149 descriptionlines in the CRDs are still wider than 76. All of them come from upstream types that
controller-gen copies in:
metav1.Condition,LabelSelector, the rootapiVersionandkind, and Flux's object references. This repository cannot rewrap them, so a check over theCRDs could never pass. The Go doc comments hold exactly the descriptions written here, and a
finding names the file and line. The check measures type and field doc comments only and skips
marker lines; it would have reported 533 lines before the rewrap.
liveTemplate(item 7) lists more than the proposal did. It adds theLabelValuesandLabelValueaccessors, whichdocs/commit-messages.mddocuments and the proposal also leftout. It also says that
Namespaceis"_cluster"for a cluster-scoped resource, and that{{.Labels.key}}fails the commit for a resource without the label: the templates render withmissingkey=error.ArgoCDClaimInControl(item 3) gives a reason for everyFalse. The draft had a bareFalsefor releasing, revoking, and not referenced.Unknown/NotConfiguredalso coversanother claim holding the Application (
heldElsewhere), and a failed read keeps the previousvalue.
FluxClaimInControlgets the same treatment:Suspended,Applying,Suspending,Releasing,Revoking,NotReferenced,NotConfigured.objectSelectorfields name the conflict reason. The current text said only that thenewer rule "is refused". The rule store refuses it with
ResourcesResolved=False, reasonCollectionOverlap, and the older rule keeps the type.CommitRequest.spec.message(item 1) says tabs are rejected. The pattern excludes\x09,so only newlines are allowed.
lastVerifiedAt(item 2) was wrong in a user doc too.docs/configuration.mdsaidReady=Falsebeside it reads as "broken for this long". It now says the timestamp shows when theprovider last worked, and that a signing-key or Secret problem can stop the check entirely.
knownHostsRefnames--insecure-allow-missing-known-hosts. "Without valid keys, SSHfails" does not hold when the installation sets that flag.
parentBranchnames the GitProvider. It said "spec.allowedGitBranches" without sayingwhose. It also says
ParentBranchNotFoundis aStalled=Truereason.ApplyReason. ForeignCommit,Refusal, Repair, and CatchUp, which also covers startup and a GitTarget first naming the claim.
flux resumeas the ordinary cause of repeatedClaimedResourceReconciledevents, before the whole-spec Update case.onRefusal) is skipped. With its lines fixed, it renders as two clear paragraphs;the
Reapplyrestrictions read better as prose than as a long bullet. Item 10(
serializeNamespace) is done: its paragraphs opened with a bare lowercasetrueandfalse.say "admits"; changing the verb everywhere would have widened the diff past the proposal.
One rendering detail the proposal did not mention: for an array field,
kubectl explainprintsthe item type's description right after the field's, with no blank line between them
(
...keep access.thenGitBranchGitTargetGrant admits ...). Those item type comments are wortha pass of their own.
