feat: answer an ingress's check, with identity for a domain backend - #42
Conversation
Builds what Voter's implementer feedback asks for: - GET /auth/check for an ingress's forward-auth: 204, or the refusal /k8s would give for the request the ingress forwards (X-Forwarded-Method, with the CSRF and origin rules for a write), or with ?redirect=true a 302 to the login at the public URL for a page load. With ?identity=true the 204 carries Krm-Foyer-Identity: the API server's userInfo from a SelfSubjectReview with the user's token, reused per token for 30 seconds, plus the session's displayName and connector. Never the token. - The Traefik recipe made real in the e2e fixture: an IngressRoute with ForwardAuth middlewares beside the Gateway API routes, with specs that forge the identity header, write without CSRF proof and load a gated page signed out, all through Traefik. - A browser identity in the cluster's authentication config: krm-foyer's tokens and the command line's get different usernames by authorized party, proved by one e2e spec. - Recipes for nginx auth_request and a Vite dev-server proxy, and for Room Pass's QR login through krm-foyer (not yet run end to end). start-cluster.sh restarts the server container when the API server's configuration changes. Docker rewrites the container's /etc/hosts on a restart and k3s rewrites CoreDNS's NodeHosts, so both lost the aliases k3d's --host-alias wrote once at creation: the API server could no longer find Dex or the test issuer, every token was refused, and only task e2e-down recovered. The script now puts the aliases back itself on every run, and new aliases no longer need a new cluster. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The browser identity recipe compared the token's client with krm-foyer and gave every other token the command line's prefix. A list audience without azp, or an azp naming another client, therefore got the command-line name and its groups: against the fixture's real API server, aud ["krm-foyer"] was kubectl:alice, and aud krm-foyer with azp another-browser too. The client is now azp, which must be a string and one of the audiences, or else the audience, a string or a list of one. Each client the cluster knows is a key of a map with its prefix; any other client, or a token whose client is in doubt, misses the map and is refused, and a validation rule says why. The fixture and docs/application-scope.md use the same rules, and the suite mints every form against the real API server: 11 of the new cases failed before (10 named kubectl: with kubectl:admins), and all pass now, also with the validation rule removed. The test issuer accepts the command line's audience as Dex does, so the suite can mint what either client receives. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The nginx recipe in docs/ingress.md put the raw request target into the login link's query unencoded: return_to=$request_uri. The page's own query then became the login's: /admin/edit?name=x&tab=history came back as /admin/edit?name=x, %26 and + were decoded once too often, and a page parameter named return_to or oidc.login_hint became krm-foyer's own, the last one sent on to the issuer. The recipe now encodes the page as one value with njs, which the official nginx images include, and keeps the redirect relative. The e2e fixture runs the recipe as the document has it: front-door.sh copies the recipe's blocks out of docs/ingress.md into an nginx in front of krm-foyer, and a spec walks a login from gated pages with several parameters, percent-encoding and a literal plus, and parameters named like the login's own, and checks the backend receives the page as asked. Five of its cases failed against the old text and pass now; a page starting with two slashes is still refused by krm-foyer's local-path check. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Dex adds the asking client to a token's audiences when it asks for another client's with the cross-client scope, and makes it azp. The fixture's kubectl client now trusts krm-foyer as a peer, and the browser identity spec asks Dex for such a token: aud [kubectl, krm-foyer], azp krm-foyer, which the API server names oidc:alice and refuses the command line's grant. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The suggested order's first step, the operator-only pilot, now names the ValidatingAdmissionPolicy that keeps a CoffeeConfig save to spec, which the same page lists under Voter's own work: through /k8s the editor's patch grant also reaches labels and annotations, which gitops-reverser would commit. Four pending specs under "behind an ingress" are proved by specs that exist now: the login gate and its return path by foyer_check_test.go (Traefik) and foyer_nginx_test.go (the nginx recipe, with a page that is not a local path refused), and the shared origin by the Gateway's and the nginx recipe's tripwires. "Answers /auth/check with a status only" no longer describes the design: the check answers identity when asked, and never the token. Two remain: the redirect URI and CSRF origin against a forged Host, and unbuffered watch events. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The e2e fixture now runs Room Pass 2.0.0 (its released image, by digest, and its CRDs) behind its own Dex with the authproxy connector, on two hosts through Traefik: room.localhost, shared by a third krm-foyer, Room Pass's /join, /bind and /logout, and a test application whose /join-room sets Room Pass's join cookie; and room-pass.localhost, the issuer, which the API server trusts as a third JWT issuer under Room Pass's reference rules. Everything Room Pass's is in the fixture; krm-foyer-room has only the chart's generic login settings. A Chromium spec follows the QR URL from a link on another site, and checks Room Pass's join page shows the code as scanned, with no code field: the silent fallback the shared host risks. It types a display name, arrives back at the application's page, and checks connector room-pass and the display metadata in /auth/session, the Kubernetes identity and both attribution extras in the audit event of a write, a pod replacement, krm-foyer's logout and Room Pass's own sign-out form, and no credential or join code in what the browser saw or in the logs of the edge, krm-foyer and Room Pass. The spec fails with SameSite=Strict on the join cookie, and with the join route's access log on. A second spec shows only Room Pass can reach Dex (and fails without the NetworkPolicy), and that forged X-Remote-* headers never get a code from Dex. Running it corrected docs/room-pass.md: Room Pass signs out with a form on its /join, not by a redirect to /logout; a typed URL carries even a Strict cookie; the display name arrives folded; and the edge must not log the QR URL. start-cluster.sh maps room-pass.localhost to a fixed address in front of Traefik for the API server and pods. The previous commit patched CoreDNS's NodeHosts, which does not exist yet on a new cluster (CI failed on it) and which k3s rewrites at every start. The names now go into a CoreDNS server block in the coredns-custom ConfigMap, which k3s's Corefile imports and k3s leaves alone; the node's /etc/hosts is still written on every run, after any restart. … are answered The rehearsal's 1,800 connections at once sometimes failed with "dial tcp ...:30443: i/o timeout". The NodePort itself takes 8,000 at once with no loss. The timeouts follow a replacement of krm-foyer's pod: kube-proxy leaves TCP conntrack entries that point at the gone pod, and a later connection from the same client port follows one to an address nobody answers. The suite, one client making thousands of connections a minute, reuses ports within the two minutes those entries live. Measured on the fixture: after a rollout restart or a forced delete, 44 to 239 timeouts in three bursts of 1,800; with the gone pod's entries removed first, none, in every round. replaceFoyer now removes the node's entries for krm-foyer's NodePort that lead to a pod that no longer exists, as kube-proxy does for UDP. The workload and the dial timeout are unchanged. A rollout that leaves no connection unanswered is parked, not needed for the demo: docs/investigations/rollout-connections.md records the measurements, what was tried (a shutdown delay, not kept) and a pending spec. …them On a new cluster the Service room-pass-issuer, created late, found 10.43.200.12 already handed out to another Service. It now takes 10.43.0.212, from the start of the Service range that Kubernetes keeps for fixed addresses. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Stacked on #41 (
docs/artifacthub-listing); merge #41 first. Builds what docs/implementer-feedback.md asks for. Its "krm-foyer's answer" table gives the result per entry.1.
/auth/check, with identity for a domain backendGET /auth/checkanswers 204 when the browser may make the request the ingress forwards, and otherwise the 401/403 that/k8swould give. It judges the forwarded request:X-Forwarded-Method, so a write needs the session's CSRF proof, andX-Forwarded-Uri/X-Original-Uri, validated likereturn_to.?redirect=true: a signed-out page load gets a 302 to the login, absolute on the public URL. Traefik resolves a relativeLocationagainst the check's own address; the e2e suite found this.?identity=true: the 204 carriesKrm-Foyer-Identity, base64url JSON with the API server'suserInfoand the session'sdisplayNameandconnector. It never carries a token. The SelfSubjectReview behind it is reused per token for 30 s.2. Routing recipes

One person gets two usernames, chosen by the token's client:
oidc:for krm-foyer,kubectl:for the command line.Fix (security): unknown or ambiguous clients got the command line's name. The first recipe gave every token that was not plainly krm-foyer's the

The same rules are in the fixture and indocs/application-scope.md.Evidence: 11 new cases failed before the fix, 10 of them as
