Creating and fitting processors inside full-graph compiled code fails during tracing:

import torch
from sdm import TableTensor
from sdm.processing import PCA

def fit(x):
    return PCA(num_components=1).fit_transform(
        TableTensor.from_tensor(x)
    ).numerical

torch.compile(fit, fullgraph=True)(torch.randn(5, 3))

Column-type set operations block capture; iterating a frozenset also fails on PyTorch 2.7. Fitted-buffer assignment separately fails on 2.14 while nn.Module.__setattr__ inspects register_buffer (SourceFileLoader).

Represent handled column types as immutable tuples, removing duplicates when combining processors. The shared check reads column counts directly, so Standardize now inherits it without a special override. Use the existing _set_buffer() helper for fitted statistics and series offsets. Calculations and checkpoint persistence stay unchanged.

handles_stypes now returns a tuple; external callers using set operators on it need to use iterable-accepting set methods or convert it to a set.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved recognition of supported data types when processing tables with populated columns.
    • Improved consistency when fitting preprocessing transforms, including imputation, scaling, clipping, categorical encoding, and text weighting. Existing calculations and fitted values are unchanged.
  • Improvements
    • Supported data types are now reported in a consistent order, making behavior more predictable when combining processors.

Processor stype declarations now use tuples, and composite processors preserve stype order. Table-support checks inspect stype blocks. Fitted processor tensors and execution offsets are set through _set_buffer; fitting calculations and offset values remain unchanged.

Changes: Processor handling and state updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ordered stype declarations
sdm/processing/base.py, sdm/processing/common/*, sdm/processing/categorical/*, sdm/processing/numerical/*, sdm/processing/datetime/calendar.py, sdm/processing/output/*, sdm/processing/text/*, test/*
Processor stype declarations and dispatch results use tuples. Composite processors preserve first-seen order when they collect stypes. Tests and fixtures use tuple declarations.
Table support checks
sdm/processing/base.py, sdm/processing/ensemble.py, sdm/processing/numerical/standardize.py
_handles_table checks each handled stype’s table block. Ensemble operations use this check. Standardize no longer defines its own table-support override.
Fitted processor buffers
sdm/processing/numerical/*, sdm/processing/categorical/*, sdm/processing/text/tfidf.py
Specified tensor attributes gain annotations. Fitting updates registered buffers through _set_buffer; existing calculations remain unchanged.
Execution offsets
sdm/processing/execution.py
Target, related-table, and feature offsets are set through _set_buffer. Their values, dtype, and device remain unchanged.

Both multi-line _set_buffer calls use positional arguments, contrary to the sdm/**/*.py instruction. Use name= and value= at each site.

Use keyword arguments in changed multiline calls. The changed calls use positional arguments where the core-library path instruction requires keywords.

Check the column counts of handled blocks directly instead of constructing active semantic-type sets. Fit PCA, RobustScale and ImputeMean through the existing buffer registration helper to avoid tracing attribute-assignment inspection.

Validated graph capture and Inductor execution on PyTorch 2.14 with static, dynamic and batched inputs, missing values and checkpoint replay. The general check still encounters unsupported frozenset iteration in PyTorch 2.7 fullgraph mode; retain Standardize's specialized check so its existing support is unchanged.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add the required breaking label to PR #1137.

Processor is publicly exported, and handles_stypes changes from frozenset[Stype] to tuple[Stype, ...]. The repository’s own contract test had to replace active_stypes - processor.handles_stypes with .difference(...), because the tuple does not support the set operator. CONTRIBUTING requires the breaking label for this incompatible public Python API change, but PR #1137 has no labels.

Restore the public `Processor.handles_stypes` contract as a `frozenset[Stype]`
rather than changing it to a tuple, preserving compatibility with callers that
use set operations.
