# Changelog

## 3.0.0
**Pytml now has its own compiler.**
- New: whole-page compiler (`compiler/compiler.py`) – finds every function that waits (`input`, `pick`, `wait_for`, `sleep`, `fetch_*`, also through other functions, methods and across `<py>` blocks) and makes it `async` with `await` inserted automatically. Line numbers are preserved.
- New: HTML elements with an `id` are Python variables (`name.value`, `out.text = "hi"`), plus `get()`, `get_all()` and an `Element` helper class.
- New: `py-click`, `py-input`, `py-change`, `py-keydown`, `py-submit` ... attributes call a Python function or run a short line of Python.
- New: `pick()`, `wait_for()`, `sleep()`, `fetch_text()`, `fetch_json()`, `show()`, `clear()`.
- New: libraries are detected from `import` lines and loaded automatically (Pyodide packages, then PyPI through micropip).
- New: `import tensorflow as tf` → TensorFlow.js through a Keras-style Python bridge.
- New: friendly errors – block, line, code line and a plain-English hint; syntax errors are reported without stopping other blocks.
- New: `<py1>`, `<py2>` ... tags; all blocks share one namespace.
- New: `examples/` (9 pages), `tests/` (compiler unit tests + every example run in a fake browser with real Pyodide), `build.cjs`.
- Changed: `pytml.js` is now generated from `compiler/`. Pyodide pinned to 314.0.7 (Python 3.14).
- Kept: `<py>`, `<script type="text/python" src>`, `print()`, `input()`, `pytml.vercel.app/pytml.js`, the usage counter and the website/docs layout.
- Known limits: `__init__`/special methods and generator functions cannot wait; Python `tensorflow`, `torch` and other native-only libraries cannot run in a browser.

## Working on the code (v3)

`pytml.js` is **generated**. Edit the sources in `compiler/` and rebuild:

| File | What it is |
| --- | --- |
| `compiler/compiler.py` | The Pytml compiler: whole-page analysis, `await` insertion, friendly errors (runs in the browser, but is plain Python) |
| `compiler/runtime.py` | `get()`, `input()`, `pick()`, `wait_for()`, `show()`, elements and events |
| `compiler/tfjs_bridge.py` | `import tensorflow` on top of TensorFlow.js |
| `compiler/pytml.src.js` | Loader: finds the tags, loads Pyodide, draws the terminal box |
| `build.cjs` | Glues them into `pytml.js` |

```bash
npm install # test tools only (pyodide, jsdom, tensorflow.js)
npm run build # writes pytml.js
npm test # compiler unit tests + every example in a fake browser
**Run Python in your browser with zero configuration – no server, just a script tag.**
Pytml is a lightweight (~15KB) JavaScript library that acts as a bridge between Python and HTML via WebAssembly. Drop a single script tag into any static page, write your logic inside `<py>` tags, and it runs natively in the browser.
```

> Python code that contains `<` or `&` (like `if a < b:`) is safest inside `<script type="text/python">`, because the browser reads `<py>` as HTML. Inside `<py>` you can write `&lt;` instead.

## Talking to the page (new in 3.0)
Python stays Python and HTML stays HTML. Only three small ideas are added:

**1. An element with an `id` is a Python variable.**
```html
<input id="name"> <button py-click="hello">Hi</button> <p id="out"></p>
<py>
def hello():
out.text = "Hello " + name.value
</py>
```

**2. `py-click="function_name"` runs a Python function** (also `py-input`, `py-change`, `py-keydown`, `py-submit` ...). The attribute may hold a short line of Python, like `py-click="count = 0"`.

**3. Waiting functions look like normal code.** Use them anywhere – even inside your own functions:

| You write | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| `input("question")` | text box, returns what the user typed |
| `pick("+", "-", prompt="Operation?")` | one button per option, returns the clicked one |
| `wait_for(".key")` or `wait_for(button)` | waits for a click, returns the event (`e.text`) |
| `sleep(2)` | waits 2 seconds without freezing the page |
| `fetch_text(url)`, `fetch_json(url)` | download a file / JSON |
| `show(table_or_figure)` | display a pandas table or a matplotlib chart |

Element cheat sheet: `.text` `.html` `.value` `.number` `.checked` `.disabled` `.visible` `.show()` `.hide()` `.toggle()` `.clear()` `.add_class("x")` `.on_click(fn)`. Find elements with `get("id")`, `get(".css")`, `get_all(".css")`. Any other browser property also works (`el.scroll_into_view()`).

More: [Tutorial.md](Tutorial.md) and the [examples](examples/) folder.

## Libraries
Pytml runs real CPython (through Pyodide), so `import numpy`, `pandas`, `matplotlib`, `scipy`, `scikit-learn`, `sympy`, `pillow` ... just work – Pytml downloads them when you import them. Other pure-Python packages are installed from PyPI automatically.

`import tensorflow as tf` runs **TensorFlow.js** through a Keras-style bridge (`tf.keras.Sequential`, `Dense`, `compile`, `fit`, `predict`, `tf.constant`, tensor maths). Training happens on the visitor's device. The original Python TensorFlow package cannot run inside a browser, so Pytml does not pretend to – see [examples/tensorflow.html](examples/tensorflow.html).

## How the compiler works
A browser tab can never really "stop and wait", so `input()` cannot simply block. The Pytml compiler reads **every** Python block of the page, finds each function that (directly or through other functions) waits, makes it `async`, and puts `await` where it is called – including across blocks and in methods. The output is standard Python, so every library keeps working, and line numbers in errors are the ones you wrote.

Limits: `__init__` and other special methods cannot wait; generators (`yield`) cannot wait; a `while True:` loop needs a waiting call inside it (like `wait_for`) or the page freezes, as with any infinite loop.

How to use Pytml ?
# How to use Pytml?

Five minutes, no JavaScript needed. Every step has a working file in [`examples/`](examples/).

## Step 1 – Add Pytml to the page
Put this line inside `<head>`:
```html
<script src="https://pytml.vercel.app/pytml.js"></script>
```

## Step 2 – Write Python inside `<py>`
```html
<py>
print("Hello!")
</py>
```
Code inside `<py>` runs from top to bottom when the page opens. If you write several `<py>` blocks they run in order and share their variables and functions. (`<py1>`, `<py2>` ... also work.)

Tip: if your code contains `<` or `&`, use `<script type="text/python"> ... </script>` instead of `<py>`.

## Step 3 – Ask questions
```python
name = input("Your name? ")
age = int(input("Your age? ")) # int() turns text into a number
print(f"{name} will be {age + 1} next year")
```
`input()` shows a text box. For a choice, show buttons:
```python
operation = pick("+", "-", "*", prompt="Which one?")
```
You can use `input()` and `pick()` inside your own functions too – nothing else to learn:
```python
def ask_number(text):
return int(input(text))
total = ask_number("a? ") + ask_number("b? ")
```
(*example: `examples/calculator.html`, `examples/quiz.html`*)

## Step 4 – Use the page
Give an element an `id` and it becomes a Python variable:
```html
<input id="name">
<button py-click="greet">Greet</button>
<p id="message"></p>
<py>
def greet():
message.text = "Hello " + name.value
</py>
```
* `py-click="greet"` runs the Python function `greet` when the button is clicked.
* `message.text = ...` changes the text of the paragraph; `name.value` reads the text box.
* Other events: `py-input`, `py-change`, `py-keydown`, `py-keyup`, `py-submit`, `py-dblclick`, `py-mouseover`.
* A short line also works: `<button py-click="count = 0">Reset</button>`.

| Element property | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| `.text` / `.html` | the text / the HTML inside |
| `.value` / `.number` | what is typed in a box (as text / as a number) |
| `.checked` | a checkbox |
| `.disabled` / `.visible` | switch a control off / hide it |
| `.add_class("x")` `.remove_class("x")` | CSS classes |

(*examples: `counter.html`, `greeting-form.html`*)

## Step 5 – Wait for a click inside your code
```python
while True:
key = wait_for(".key").text # wait until any button with class="key" is clicked
print("you pressed", key)
```
`wait_for(button)` waits for one specific element. `wait_for(box, "keydown")` waits for another event.
(*example: `keypad-calculator.html`*) Use `sleep(1)` to wait one second (*`timer.html`*).

## Step 6 – Use libraries
```python
import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
x = np.linspace(0, 6, 100)
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
ax.plot(x, np.sin(x))
show(fig) # puts the chart on the page
```
NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, SciPy, scikit-learn, SymPy and many more are downloaded automatically (first time takes a few seconds). `show(table)` displays a pandas table. (*example: `data-science.html`*)

## Step 7 – TensorFlow
```python
import tensorflow as tf
model = tf.keras.Sequential([tf.keras.layers.Dense(1, input_shape=[1])])
model.compile(optimizer="sgd", loss="mse")
model.fit([[0.0], [1.0], [2.0]], [[-1.0], [1.0], [3.0]], epochs=200, verbose=0)
print(model.predict([[10.0]]).tolist())
```
This is TensorFlow.js behind a Keras-style bridge, training on your own device. (*example: `tensorflow.html`*)

## When something goes wrong
Errors appear in the terminal box:
```
Traceback (most recent call last):
block 1, line 2
print(y)
NameError: name 'y' is not defined
Hint: 'y' has no value yet. Create it first (name = ...), check the spelling ...
```
*block 1, line 2* = the first `<py>` on the page, second line of code. The other blocks still run.

## Handy limits
* A `while True:` loop must contain `input`, `pick`, `wait_for` or `sleep`, otherwise the page freezes (like any endless loop).
* `__init__` (and other `__special__` methods) cannot wait for the user. Put `input()` in a normal method.
* The first visit downloads about 10 MB of Python; after that the browser keeps it.
