Part of OpenMS/OpenMS#10327 (step E1). OpenMS builds its dependencies with vcpkg now. Since 2026-09-29, no OpenMS workflow on develop uses the contrib:

The maintainers decided that the published contrib artifacts are frozen and stay online (decision 3 in #10327). This PR stops publishing new ones:

  • main.yml still builds the contrib on every push, but no longer tags or uploads releases. It loses:
    • the prepare job, which only generated the release tag;
    • the tag, package and release steps, which ran on workflow_dispatch;
    • the per-job archive names;
    • the Windows path normalisation, which only the release step used.
  • deploydocker.yml and deploy-manylinux-docker.yml are deleted. They pushed ghcr.io/openms/contrib and ghcr.io/openms/contrib_manylinux_2_34 on every push to master and release/**. Because the trigger goes away in this PR, merging it does not publish one last image. Their Dockerfiles stay in dockerfiles/.
  • README.md and AGENTS.md say that the contrib is retired and point to vcpkg.

What stays: the existing releases (including release/3.2.0 to release/3.5.0, which OpenMS-toolbox and umetaflow now pin), the images, and OpenMS/contrib-sources. Older OpenMS versions and their release branches keep building against them. Archiving the repository (step E2) comes after OpenMS drops the submodule (steps D3 and D4).

Validation: the edited main.yml parses. Its build job keeps all build and log steps, and nothing refers to the removed job, steps or matrix keys any more. The push of this branch runs it once.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Changes
    • The contrib repository is retired; OpenMS now builds third-party libraries with vcpkg.
    • This repository no longer publishes releases or Docker images. Existing releases, named container images, and contrib-sources remain available for older OpenMS versions and release branches.
    • Automated builds continue for macOS, Linux, and Windows, without preparing tags or publishing releases.

OpenMS builds its dependencies with vcpkg now, and no OpenMS workflow
uses the contrib any more (OpenMS/OpenMS#10327, step E1). Freeze the
published artifacts:

- main.yml keeps building on push, but no longer tags or uploads
  releases (removes the prepare job, the tag, package and release steps
  and their asset names).
- Delete deploydocker.yml and deploy-manylinux-docker.yml, which pushed
  ghcr.io/openms/contrib and ghcr.io/openms/contrib_manylinux_2_34 on
  every push to master and release/**.
- README.md and AGENTS.md say the contrib is retired and point to vcpkg.

The existing releases, images and OpenMS/contrib-sources stay online,
so older OpenMS versions keep building against them.
