Fixes this issue #5761.

And its a new version of this PR #5723 - so, it can be closed.

Description

Load custom materialization during cleanup processes so janitor and destroy commands can delete custom-materialized models when the context uses load=False.

Test Plan

  • Passed: python -m pytest tests/core/integration/test_aux_commands.py::test_janitor_loads_materialization -q --tb=short --disable-warnings

Checklist

  • I have run make style and fixed any issues
  • I have added tests for my changes (if applicable)
  • All existing tests pass (make fast-test)
  • My commits are signed off (git commit -s) per the DCO

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • The cleanup process now loads materializations before removing expired environments and snapshots.

Thanks! The fix is right. I reproduced the bug with a project that defines its own materialization in materializations/: I applied a plan in one process, then ran cleanup from a fresh Context(..., load=False).

  • On main, both run_janitor and destroy fail with Materialization strategy with name 'proj_local_mat' was not found.
  • With this branch, both succeed. destroy is covered because _destroy goes through _run_janitor. This also fixes the cleanup that run() triggers before it loads materializations itself.

One request for the test: as written, it can't hit the bug.

  • custom_full comes from the examples/custom_materializations package, which is installed and registered through entry points, so it's always found.
  • The context has already been loaded by the plan call, so _load_materializations() returns early. The spy only checks that the call happened.

Could you change it so the materialization is defined in the project's own materializations/ folder, and cleanup runs from a fresh Context(paths=..., load=False) in a separate process? Materialization classes are registered globally once imported, so the plan and the cleanup need separate processes, e.g. subprocess.run([sys.executable, "-c", ...]). Something like:

# setup, in one process: write materializations/mine.py + models/m.sql, then plan
# and invalidate "dev"
# cleanup, in a second process:
ctx = Context(paths=[tmp_path], config=config, load=False)
ctx.run_janitor(ignore_ttl=True) # fails on main, passes with this fix

Walkthrough

The janitor now loads materializations before cleanup begins. An integration test verifies that the janitor loads materializations when it runs against an invalidated environment.

Changes: Janitor cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Load materializations before cleanup
sqlmesh/core/context.py, tests/core/integration/test_aux_commands.py
_run_janitor calls _load_materializations before cleanup. The integration test creates a custom-materialization model, invalidates its environment, runs the janitor, and checks that _load_materializations is called once.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: mday-io

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to dd271

The change fixes cleanup for custom materializations, but it can cause scheduled runs to fail when a materialization registers something at import time that cannot be registered twice. The new test also does not prove the original bug is fixed. Address the double load, and make the test use an unloaded context, before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to dd271

Cleanup now executes configured Python materializations even when full project loading is disabled. It reuses the existing extension mechanism and preserves physical-cleanup-before-state-deletion ordering. No security bypass was established, but repeated initialization and deployment-specific trust assumptions remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A party controlling a loaded materialization file can execute its top-level Python code when an operator invokes cleanup on that project. Execution is in the cleanup process, so potential exposure follows that process's ambient privileges. The evidence does not establish independently writable tenant boundaries, deployment credentials or a maximum production asset scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The security-relevant extension is from cleanup invocation to project-controlled executable modules, not a new network endpoint or credential provider. Normal project loading already uses this import mechanism. No supplied evidence establishes that materialization authors are less trusted than cleanup operators, so the new reachability is not retained as a demonstrated privilege-boundary violation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — An import failure prevents janitor's subsequent physical cleanup and state deletion, preserving those records for retry. This does not roll back arbitrary import-time side effects or destroy's earlier environment invalidations. Repeated imports and the separate global strategy-class cache leave extension idempotency and concurrent initialization unresolved; no resulting security failure was demonstrated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider an explicit materialization-initialization lifecycle separate from full project loading, with defined retry, reload and synchronization semantics. Validate unloaded cleanup, import failure and repetition before treating initialization as once-only. This is a lifecycle-hardening proposal, not an observed security finding.

Load materializations only once per context.

For a production run with load=False, run() calls this path and then calls _load_materializations() again at Line 906. The helper leaves _loaded false, and the loader re-imports each file. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

A materialization that registers a Prometheus counter at module scope fails on the second import with a duplicate-timeseries error, stopping the run. (raw.githubusercontent.com) Track materialization loading separately from full project loading, or avoid the second call.

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Provide the materialization and test an unloaded context.

If custom_full is not already installed or imported, Context(...) fails model validation before the test reaches the spy. (raw.githubusercontent.com) If it is available, this context has _loaded=True, so the spy records a call that loads nothing.

Create the materialization in the temporary project. Then run cleanup with a fresh load=False context and assert that the snapshot table is deleted.

Following up on CodeRabbit's double-load comment: it's real. run is in SKIP_LOAD_COMMANDS, so sqlmesh run uses an unloaded context, and with this change a prod run imports the project's materializations/ files twice: once in the janitor, then again in run(). I checked it with a project-local materialization: the file is imported twice and the run still succeeds, so it isn't a blocker. It would be cleaner to track that materializations are loaded (for example a _materializations_loaded flag on Context that _load_materializations() checks and sets), so the second call is a no-op.

The test change from my earlier review is still the main thing needed before merge.
