fix(ai): stop server tool event polling from leaking memory - #2086
A server tool that runs for a long time leaks memory while it runs. The event poll in executeWithEventPolling adds one reaction to the tool's promise every 10 ms, and the promise keeps all of them until the tool settles. This PR subscribes to the promise once, so memory stays flat while the tool runs.
🎯 Changes
packages/ai/src/activities/chat/tools/tool-calls.ts: executeWithEventPolling subscribes to the tool's promise one time. Each poll waits on a new promise. The 10 ms timer or the settle callback resolves that promise. When the tool settles, the callback also clears the timer. The function returns await executionPromise, so a rejection still comes out of the generator.
packages/ai/tests/tool-event-polling.test.ts: a regression test with fake timers. It counts then calls on each promise while one tool call is pending for 1 s. A second test has a polled tool emit an event and then reject. It checks that the event streams before the output-error result.
testing/e2e: a new pending-tool-subscriptions tools-test scenario (tool, fixture, and tests/tools-test/pending-server-tool.spec.ts). The server tool stays pending for 400 ms and counts then calls on its own promise and on the promises derived from it. The spec makes sure that the highest count on one promise is less than 5.

🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue. A server tool that stays pending holds memory that grows at a fixed rate until the tool settles. A tool that never settles grows the heap until the process stops at its heap limit. Every chat with server tools uses this path.
Cause.executeWithEventPolling runs Promise.race([executionWithFlag, timeout]) every 10 ms. Promise.race calls then on executionWithFlag each time. A pending promise keeps every reaction until it settles. That is about 100 reactions per second, plus the race promise and the resolve functions of each reaction.
Fix. The function calls executionPromise.then(settle, settle) one time. Each poll waits on a new promise that the timer or settle resolves. Nothing keeps the old wait promises, so the garbage collector frees them.
Possible alternatives
Use AbortSignal or an event emitter to wake the poll. This adds more code for the same result. A plain callback is enough.
Remove the poll and push events directly to the consumer. This changes how events reach the stream, which is a larger change in behavior. This PR keeps the poll and only removes the leak.
Testing
Commands run.
vitest run tests/tool-event-polling.test.ts on a clean detached worktree of main (c32f641): fails.
FAIL tests/tool-event-polling.test.ts > does not subscribe to a pending tool execution on every event poll
AssertionError: expected 101 to be less than 5
The same test file on a detached worktree of this branch: passes.
Test Files 1 passed (1)
Tests 1 passed (1)
nx run-many -t test:lib test:types test:oxlint -p @tanstack/ai: 2693 tests in 158 files pass. Types pass. oxlint has no new warnings.
New E2E spec tests/tools-test/pending-server-tool.spec.ts: on main it fails, and on this branch it passes.
Expected: < 5
Received: 37
All of tests/tools-test, tests/custom-events.spec.ts and tests/interrupts-test/per-item.spec.ts pass on this branch (88 passed). The enclosure:assigned scenario in per-item.spec.ts sends a custom event from a server tool while the tool runs, which is the polling path.
A throwaway test, not committed: a server tool emits a custom event and then rejects after 50 ms. On main and on this branch, the event streams first and the call gets an error result.
pnpm test:pr: passes (all targets, 112 projects). My shell had ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL set to a local proxy. With that variable set, 2 tests in ai-anthropic/tests/auth-parity.test.ts fail because they read it. Without the variable, they pass.
Measurements.
Production: a heap sampling profile of a Node service on @tanstack/ai 1.0.1 with one tool call that stayed pending. Promise.race inside executeWithEventPolling held 15 of 18 MiB of the memory still alive after 4 minutes. That is about 225 MiB per hour. The process stopped at its heap limit about every 4.5 hours.
Local: a copy of the loop with a promise that never settles grows about 97 MiB per hour on 1.0.1 to 1.2.0. With this change, it stays flat.
Manual test.
On main, run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai exec vitest run tests/tool-event-polling.test.ts after you copy the test file from this branch. The test fails with expected 101 to be less than 5.
On this branch, run the same command. The test passes.
How this PR makes testing easy. The new unit test is the repro. It runs in under 10 ms with fake timers and no heap measurements. The new E2E scenario catches the same fault through the full chat flow: pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e -- tests/tools-test/pending-server-tool.spec.ts.
Risk / rollback
Risk is low. Only the wait inside the poll changes. Event order, the return value and the rejection path stay the same. To roll back, revert this PR.
Tool-event polling now settles promptly when a tool succeeds or fails, avoiding repeated waits and unnecessary memory use during long-running executions.
Custom events emitted before a tool fails are now yielded before the error result.
Tests
Added coverage for long-running tool subscriptions and for delivering custom events before tool errors.
executeWithEventPolling raced the tool's promise against a 10 ms timer on
every poll. Each Promise.race added a reaction to the pending promise, and
the promise kept them all until the tool settled, so a long-running tool
held about 100 MB per hour. Subscribe to the promise once and let each poll
wait on a fresh promise that the timer or the settle callback resolves.

Walkthrough
Tool-event polling now handles fulfillment and rejection, wakes its active wait when execution settles, and returns the execution promise. Unit and end-to-end tests check promise subscription counts during pending tool execution.

Summary
Polling completion and unit validation packages/ai/src/activities/chat/tools/tool-calls.ts, packages/ai/tests/tool-event-polling.test.ts, .changeset/tool-event-polling-leak.md
executeWithEventPolling marks execution settled on fulfillment or rejection and wakes the active wait. It continues polling at 10 ms intervals while execution is pending, flushes queued events, and returns the execution promise. Unit tests check subscription counts and confirm that a custom event is yielded before the rejection result. The changeset records the patch.
The new scenario uses a pending server tool that counts promise subscriptions. Its fixture defines the tool-call and completion messages. The end-to-end test checks that the reported count is below five.
The change removes repeated polling subscriptions while preserving tool results and rejection events. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains in the inspected changes.

Add the pending-tool-subscriptions tools-test scenario. Its server tool
stays pending for 400 ms and counts `then` calls on its own promise and on
the promises derived from it. On main the event poll makes 37 calls on one
promise; with the fix it makes fewer than 5.

A server tool that emits a custom event and then rejects after a few polls
still yields the event before the call gets its output-error result. The
test passes on main and with the fix, so it guards the rejection path that
`return await executionPromise` now carries.

Overlapping count_pending_subscriptions calls now share one `then`
wrapper. Each call registers its own counts and removes them when it
finishes, and the last call to finish restores the original `then`, so an
overlap cannot leave a stale wrapper installed.

@coderabbitaiFixed in 8e46d0f: the new test has a polled tool emit an event and then reject, and checks that the event streams before the output-error result. Why: it guards the rejection path that the fix changed (return await executionPromise).
For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.
@efemaer Thanks for adding the test. It covers event ordering when a polled tool rejects.

## What to add for your change
E2E coverage is mandatory for every feature, bug fix, or behavior change (see the root `CLAUDE.md`). Mirror of that table, kept in sync here:
| Change type | What E2E test to add |
| --------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| New provider adapter | Add provider to `feature-support.ts` + `test-matrix.ts`. Existing feature tests auto-run. |
| New feature (e.g., new generation type) | Add feature to types, feature config, support matrix. Create fixture + spec file. |
| Bug fix in chat/streaming | Add a test case to `chat.spec.ts` or `tools-test/` that reproduces the bug. |
| Tool system change | Add scenario to `tools-test-scenarios.ts` + test in `tools-test/` specs. |
| Middleware change | Add test to `middleware.spec.ts` with appropriate scenario. |
| Client-side change (useChat, etc.) | Add test covering the observable behavior change. |
| joinRun + client-tool continuation | Add a spec that reloads mid-run, tails with `joinRun`, and asserts the client-tool result POSTs after replay (see `tests/join-run-client-tool.spec.ts`). |
| Durable/detachable run + takeover | Add a spec that disconnects mid-stream, reconnects with the same `runId`, and asserts the resumed stream continues from the aligned offset instead of restarting the agent. |
| Out-of-band cancel vs. plain disconnect | Add a case distinguishing `requestRunCancel`/`wasCancelRequested` (durable cancel — record ends `'aborted'`) from an unrequested disconnect on a detachable run (record stays `'running'`, resumable). |
| New run-store backend | Run `runPersistenceConformance` from `packages/ai-persistence/src/testkit/` against it; it now pins `undefined` vs. explicit `false` on `cancelRequested` and absent vs. explicit `undefined` on `update`. |
| New sandbox provider | Run the journal conformance suite from `@tanstack/ai-sandbox/testkit` against it, using `makeFakeShellSpawn` (also from that testkit) to exercise the journal/claim/driver seam without a real sandbox. |
