feat(create): add Descope auth add-on for React - #483
Adds Descope as a managed authentication add-on for the React framework, alongside the existing Clerk and WorkOS options. Selecting it wires Descope auth into a generated TanStack Start app end-to-end.
What's included
Provider — <AuthProvider> (@descope/react-sdk) wrapped at the app root via VITE_DESCOPE_PROJECT_ID
Header user menu — self-contained avatar + "Sign out" (useSession/useUser/useDescope); renders nothing when signed out
Demo route — /demo/descope rendering the sign-up-or-in flow plus a signed-in greeting
Metadata — category: "auth" and exclusive: ["auth"]
Docs + env — README.md (setup, route protection, production checklist) and .env.local entry
Changeset (@tanstack/create, minor)
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a Descope authentication add-on for React projects, including sign-in and sign-out, a header profile menu, and a /demo/descope route.
The demo displays loading, error, retry, and signed-in states. Configure a Descope project ID and sign-up/sign-in flow to use it.
Documentation
Added local setup instructions, route protection guidance, and a production checklist covering domain and authentication settings.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This PR adds a Descope authentication add-on for generated React apps. It configures the provider and project ID, adds a session-aware header menu and /demo/descope route, documents setup, and adds an end-to-end smoke test.

The script processes a payload to derive a visitor/agent identifier and may persist this identifier in cookies and localStorage, creating supply-chain and trust-boundary risks. The same anchor block appears in both SignedOut (lines 44-55) and SignedInGreeting (lines 93-104). Extract a small shared component to keep them in sync.
Then replace both occurrences with <DescopeAttribution /> (prepending "Sign out from the avatar in the header. " before it in SignedInGreeting).

- Gate header avatar on isUserLoading to avoid initial fallback flash
- Handle sdk.logout() promise rejection
- Fix README to match header-user behavior (no sign-in link)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
I generated the add-on over current main outside the CLI monorepo. Production build and TypeScript passed, and both the home and Descope routes returned 200.
With provider assets deliberately unavailable, the demo reaches “Sign in to continue” but shows an empty flow area. The callback only logs the flow error. Please surface that failure in the demo with an actionable error and retry path, so a failed provider load does not look like a working sign-in screen. The fixture should intercept provider responses locally. It can cover a failed load and recovery without reaching Descope.
Signed-in header/logout behavior still needs local fixture coverage before this is ready to land.
Thanks for adding this. The initialization error, retry, and signed-in/logout coverage are now folded into this branch, along with current main.
AI review notes:
The real SDK reports failed configuration and UI-asset initialization through its supported logger, before the authentication-error callback can fire. The demo now shows loading until onReady, reports initialization failures, and retries with a fresh flow instance. Errors after the flow is ready remain with the normal authentication callback. The earlier callback-only candidate failed the blocked-provider browser probe.
A permanent blocking test intercepts every provider request, serves the real UI from a pinned npm archive with SHA-512 verification, checks failed initialization and fresh-config recovery, then exercises the real SDK with a local success event and logout response. No request reaches Descope. The rendered error, ready, and signed-in screens were inspected and redundant copy removed. This does not claim live authentication verification.
The normal hook passed all 10 workspace builds, lint, 569 unit tests, and all 11 blocking browser cases. SDK 2.30.3, the declared minimum, separately passed strict npm install, generated build/types, and the local lifecycle checks. Its production audit and an otherwise matching no-Descope baseline both reported zero advisories.
The CLI JavaScript has zero raw/gzip growth. The create engine grows by 32,177 raw bytes and 9,261 aggregate separately gzipped JavaScript bytes against current main, within applicable budgets. These are CLI artifact measurements, not an app client-bundle measurement. Required hosted checks and current review must still pass before merge.
