A stalled package-manager shim can block optional version detection and delay cancellation. This bounds the lookup and cleans up its owned processes before returning the existing unknown-version fallback.

AI review notes:
The optional deadline remains 15 seconds. Timeout and abort share cleanup; pre-aborted lookups do not spawn. Windows retains live-parent taskkill /T /F with a five-second bound.

On POSIX, a live Node supervisor owns the group and handles caller disconnection. Cleanup sends SIGCONT to resume a stopped owner, whose handler kills its own group. Execa force-kills the supervisor after one second if it cannot respond. The caller never signals a saved group ID. The guarantee covers descendants in the owned group, not processes that create another session.

Eight real subprocess cases cover trimmed output/cwd, stalls, inherited pipes, cancellation, pre-cancellation, caller exit, shim exit and a stopped supervisor. The stopped-supervisor case failed on 1bc40e4f; the corrected case passes the two-second bound and checks its descendant is gone. The caller-exit subprocess now uses current TypeScript source through a direct test-only tsx dependency already resolved in this repository, so it does not depend on prebuilt or stale dist output. No production dependency changed.

Normal hooks passed all 10 builds, lint, 577 units and all 22 blocking browser cases. CLI dist JavaScript is unchanged; create dist is +3,980 raw/+1,038 gzip bytes against main efb68bdf, summing separately compressed JavaScript files. No new startup or memory benchmark is claimed.

Fresh hosted checks, the existing Windows job and required TanStack Core codeowner review remain gates for the updated head. Required workflow jobs and pinned actions are preserved.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Package-manager version checks now stop after 15 seconds instead of waiting indefinitely, helping project creation continue when a package manager stalls.
    • Canceling a version check or exiting during one now stops its running processes cleanly, including related child processes.
    • If a version can’t be detected because of cancellation, timeout, or an execution failure, the existing unknown-version fallback remains available without adding environment errors.

Walkthrough

Package-manager version checks now use a 15-second timeout and support cancellation. The implementation adds platform-specific subprocess cleanup and returns undefined on timeout, cancellation, or execution failure. Tests cover probe results and process cleanup, and Windows CI runs the probe tests.

Changes: Bounded version probe

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform-specific probe launch
packages/create/src/environment.ts
POSIX systems run the version command through a detached Node supervisor. Windows runs the package manager directly.
Timeout and cancellation cleanup
packages/create/src/environment.ts
The lookup applies a 15-second timeout and handles cancellation. Cleanup uses taskkill on Windows or disconnects the supervisor on POSIX, then awaits subprocess completion.
Probe tests and release integration
packages/create/tests/environment-version-probe.test.ts, .github/workflows/pr.yml, .changeset/bounded-version-probe.md, packages/create/package.json
Tests cover timeout, cancellation, caller exit, cleanup, pre-aborted signals, working directory, and trimmed output. Windows CI builds @tanstack/create and runs the tests. A patch changeset and tsx development dependency were added.

The bounded version lookup now escalates to a forced kill if its supervisor stops responding. One pre-abort test may be weaker than intended, which is a small follow-up rather than a merge blocker.

Refreshed this against current main and kept cancellation intact.

AI review notes:
At f828b575, timeout and abort share the same owned-tree cleanup. A real negative control showed that simply forwarding the new cancel signal delayed abort until the 15-second timeout; the new cancellation case now passes and checks that the descendant is gone. A second case confirms that an already-cancelled lookup never starts a subprocess.
Normal hooks passed 10 builds, lint, 574 units and all 22 browser cases. CLI gzip is unchanged and create is +598 bytes against current main, within budgets. Fresh Windows CI and the existing Core codeowner review are still required.

Assert that cancellation prevents the execa call.

If the early return is removed, cleanup can kill the shim before it writes probe.pid. The test can then pass even though it launched a probe. Use an execa spy or mock to assert that the package-manager probe was not called.

Fixed both cleanup findings in 1bc40e4f.

AI review notes:
The old f828b575 build failed the caller-exit regression. A live POSIX supervisor now owns the group and kills only its own group when the caller disconnects or requests cleanup. The caller never signals a saved group ID. The new shim-exit case verifies descendant cleanup and asserts that the caller does not issue a negative-PID kill.
Seven focused subprocess cases and normal hooks passed: 10 builds, lint, 576 units and 22 browser cases. CLI JavaScript is unchanged; create is +3,716 raw/+962 gzip bytes against efb68bdf. No startup or memory benchmark is claimed.
Fresh hosted checks, Windows validation and required Core review remain gates. The guarantee covers the owned group, not descendants that create a separate session.

Bound POSIX cleanup after disconnect.

If a shim stops the supervisor with SIGSTOP, the supervisor cannot run its disconnect handler. stop() then waits indefinitely for the supervisor, so timeout and cancellation cannot complete.

Add a bounded escalation that terminates the owned process tree and bounds the cleanup wait. Killing only the supervisor can leave descendants running.

The stopped-supervisor regression and stale-dist test finding are addressed in 08e7324e.

AI review notes:
The negative control failed with “Stopped supervisor blocked cancellation.” Cleanup now resumes the live owner, whose SIGCONT handler kills its owned group; Execa adds a one-second supervisor force-kill fallback. The new case completes within its two-second bound and verifies the descendant is gone. The caller-exit case loads source with the direct test-only tsx dependency instead of importing dist.
All eight subprocess cases and normal hooks passed: 10 builds, lint, 577 units and 22 browser cases. CLI JavaScript is unchanged; create is +3,980 raw/+1,038 gzip bytes against current main. No startup or memory benchmark is claimed. Fresh hosted and Windows checks plus required Core approval remain.
