Summary

resolve_issue_id now returns the issue id as git reports it, not the string from the request path. This removes the remaining request-input-to-argv flow behind CodeQL rust/command-line-injection alert #83 (git/issues.rs:218).

Motivation & context

This follows up #521. #521 restricted issue ids to [A-Za-z0-9-], but on an exact match resolve_issue_id still returned the caller's input (id_or_prefix.to_string()). get_issue and close_issue then passed it to git cat-file blob refs/gitlawb/issues/<id>. CodeQL's code flow runs api/issues.rs:134 (Path issue_id) → git/issues.rs:152 → :218, and alert #83 stayed open on main after #521 merged.

No tracking issue; this is the code-scanning alert itself.

What changed

gitlawb-node, crates/gitlawb-node/src/git/issues.rs:

  • Removed the cat-file -e exact-match path that echoed the input back. Exact and prefix lookups now share one for-each-ref refs/gitlawb/issues/<id>* listing, and the id comes from git's refname output.
  • An exact refname still wins over longer ids that share it as a prefix, but only when git cat-file -e finds its object. That check runs on git's refname from the listing, not on the request input. Unique-prefix, ambiguous (error), not-found, and revision/glob-syntax rejection are unchanged; the existing fix(node): reject revision syntax in issue ids and drop service passthrough #521 tests cover them.
  • Added test_resolve_exact_id_wins_over_longer_id, because that precedence now lives in the new logic.
  • Added test_resolve_dangling_exact_id_does_not_win_over_longer_id. for-each-ref lists a ref even when its blob is missing, so without the object check a dangling exact ref beat a readable longer id: lookup returned the dangling id where main reports an ambiguous prefix, get_issue returned None, and close_issue hit its expect(). A dangling exact ref now resolves exactly as on main.

Lookups by unique prefix or for a missing id make one git call (for-each-ref). A lookup whose exact ref is listed makes two (for-each-ref, then cat-file -e on git's refname); on main that case was one cat-file -e call on the request input.

How a reviewer can verify

cargo test -p gitlawb-node --bin gitlawb-node git::issues

All 9 pass locally, including the two new tests. Alert #83 should be reported fixed by this PR's CodeQL analysis.

Before you request review

  • Scope is one logical change; no unrelated churn
  • cargo test --workspace passes locally (see Notes)
  • New behavior is covered by tests (required for fixes)
  • cargo fmt --all and cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings are clean
  • Commit titles use Conventional Commits (feat(...), fix(...), docs(...))
  • Docs / .env.example updated if behavior or config changed (or N/A)
  • Checked existing PRs so this isn't a duplicate

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Issue references now resolve to an exact match when longer references share the same prefix.
    • If an exact reference cannot be resolved, remaining matches are considered: a single match resolves successfully, while multiple matches are reported as ambiguous.

resolve_issue_id answered an exact match by echoing the request-path id
back to callers, so get_issue and close_issue spliced caller input into
`git cat-file blob refs/gitlawb/issues/<id>`. #521 restricted the input
to [A-Za-z0-9-], but the value handed to git was still the request
string (CodeQL rust/command-line-injection #83).

Resolve exact and prefix lookups through one for-each-ref listing and
return the refname git reports. An exact refname still wins over longer
ids that share it as a prefix; unique-prefix, ambiguous, not-found, and
revision-syntax behavior is unchanged.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Issue ID resolution now searches exact and prefix refs together. A valid exact ref takes precedence. A dangling exact ref is excluded before the resolver evaluates the remaining matches.

Changes: Issue ID Resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ref matching and validation
crates/gitlawb-node/src/git/issues.rs
The resolver returns a valid exact ref when present. Otherwise, it returns None for no matches, the ID for one match, or an ambiguity error for multiple matches. Tests cover valid and dangling exact refs, including an error from close_issue when a longer match remains.

A corrupted issue ref with a missing object can resolve to an ID, and closing it may panic. This is an edge case with a small fix, so it should be addressed with a test, but it is unlikely to affect normal use.

for-each-ref lists a ref even when its blob is missing, so the exact-id
precedence added in the previous commit picked a dangling exact ref over a
readable longer sibling: resolve_issue_id returned the dangling id where
main reported an ambiguous prefix, get_issue then returned None, and
close_issue hit its expect().

Let the exact id win only when `git cat-file -e` finds its object, run on
git's own refname so no request input returns to the argv. Otherwise fall
through to the unchanged prefix rules, matching main for every layout.

What changed in this PR

This follow-up to #521 updates node issue resolution to return IDs from Git’s refname output rather than request input, addressing the remaining request-input flow flagged by CodeQL.

Changes:

  • Unifies exact and prefix lookups through for-each-ref.
  • Preserves exact-match precedence when the referenced object exists and existing ambiguity handling when it does not.
  • Adds regression tests for readable and dangling exact refs that share a prefix with longer IDs.

Approving. I checked the new resolution logic against main's on the paths that matter.

  • For any id that passes the [A-Za-z0-9-] guard, the exact refname equals the input, so the id returned is the same as main's. The prefix path uses the same listing as before, and the glob does not cross /, so it matches nothing the old exact check did not.
  • The 9 git::issues tests pass on this head. I broke the logic two ways to confirm the new tests bite: making a dangling exact ref win turns the dangling test red, and making the exact ref never win turns the exact-wins test red.
  • CodeQL's analysis of this head reports no open alert, while alert 83 is open on main.
  • Error mapping in api/issues.rs is unchanged: ambiguous prefix and git spawn failure still surface as git errors, a missing id as not found.

Not blocking: a full-id lookup now costs two git calls instead of one, as the description says. The charset guard from the earlier change is still what bounds the argv; this change makes the returned id come from git's output. The lone dangling ref panic in close_issue is the same on main and not touched here.
