fix(node): scope bounty aggregates to anonymously-listable repos (#477) - #527
Restricts the bounty stats aggregates to repos an anonymous caller can list, so private-repo bounty activity and agent earnings stop leaking through GET /api/v1/bounties/stats and GET /api/v1/agents/{did}/bounties.
Motivation & context
Both endpoints ran unfiltered aggregates over every bounty. An anonymous caller could watch the global open/claimed/completed counts move, read the leaderboard, and read per-agent earnings derived from private repos.
Continues #495 by @Mystic-commits (their commit is kept as authored). Supersedes #483, which fixes the same issue with a per-request scan of the whole bounties table.
Breaking or protocol change (issue required first)
What changed
Crate touched: gitlawb-node.
api/bounties.rs: visible_repo_pairs() resolves the anonymously-listable (owner, name) set once per request (deduped repos plus their visibility rules, filtered by listable_at_root, the same shape as /stats in server.rs). A database error collapses to an empty set, so counts go to zero rather than leak.
db/mod.rs: visibility-scoped counterparts of the three aggregates, filtering on that set in SQL, with owner and claimant keys normalized so did:key: and bare-key forms match. The unfiltered originals are removed.
test_support.rs: deny-path tests for both endpoints, a root-rule-overrides-is_public case, and a mirror-row case (a mirror whose canonical twin is private is hidden; a mirror-only repo counts, as it does for authorize_repo_read and /stats).
Two follow-up commits on top of the contributor's: cargo fmt, and a comment recording why mirror rows are handled as above.
The mirror-row test fails if the visibility rules are ignored and fails if mirror-only repos are dropped; I checked both by injecting each change.
Before you request review
Scope is one logical change; no unrelated churn
cargo test --workspace passes locally
New behavior is covered by tests (required for fixes)
cargo fmt --all and cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings are clean
Commit titles use Conventional Commits (feat(...), fix(...), docs(...))
Docs / .env.example updated if behavior or config changed (or N/A)
Checked existing PRs so this isn't a duplicate
Protocol & signing impact
Touches DID / did:key, Ed25519 / RFC 9421 signatures, UCAN, ref certs, or P2P wire formats
Discussed in an issue before implementation
Backward-compatible with existing nodes and previously signed history
Notes for reviewers
On unfixed main the per-agent and leaderboard aggregates also fail to decode: SUM(amount) comes back as NUMERIC and r.get::<i64, _>("total") panics once a completed bounty exists. The new queries cast the sum to BIGINT. On main, three of the four new tests panic on that decode before they reach their assertions, and the mirror-row test shows the leak itself (anonymous open count 2, expected 1).
Every caller, signed or not, gets the anonymous-scoped aggregates. A signed owner does not see their own private bounties in the totals; the per-repo and per-bounty reads remain gated as before.
Bounties on repos that are not in the local deduped set (quarantined or absent) drop out of the aggregates.
I ran the bounty tests, fmt and clippy for gitlawb-node on the merged tree, not the whole workspace.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Bounty counts, leaderboards, and agent earnings include only bounties from repositories visible to anonymous readers. Private repositories and repositories hidden by visibility rules are excluded, including when accessed through a mirror.
Agent statistics correctly combine claimant identities recorded with or without the did:key: prefix.
Errors encountered while loading repository visibility or bounty statistics are reported as server errors instead of appearing as zero counts or an empty leaderboard.
bounty_stats and agent_bounty_stats ran unfiltered aggregates over all
bounties, leaking private-repo bounty activity to anonymous callers.
Mirror the stats() pattern from server.rs (#104):
1. Batch-load all deduped repos + visibility rules (2 SQL round-trips)
2. Filter to listable_at_root(rules, is_public, owner_did, None)
3. Pass visible (owner, name) pairs into SQL aggregates via EXISTS/unnest
with owner key normalization on both sides (BOUNTY_OWNER_CASE_SQL).
4. Normalize claimant DID in agent_bounty_stats_visible and group by
normalized claimant in bounty_leaderboard_visible (BOUNTY_CLAIMANT_CASE_SQL).
5. Remove orphaned unfiltered aggregate methods to pass dead_code lints.
6. In tests, seed completed bounty claimant state via the real claim/approve
path, and verify root-rule-decided visibility overrides.
Aggregates are intentionally anonymous-scoped for all callers (matching the
#104 stats pattern).
Fail-closed: DB errors collapse the visible set to empty, so all counts
return 0 — an under-count never leaks existence.

Walkthrough
Bounty status counts, leaderboards, and per-agent statistics now include only bounties from anonymously listable repositories. Database errors from repository visibility loading and aggregate queries propagate from the endpoints.
Anonymous statistics requests can repeat work across every repository. This is a bounded performance follow-up rather than an established reason to block this visibility fix.

Merge readiness
CI: Required PR Checks (test (stable), test (beta), fmt+clippy, release build, Docker smoke, MSRV, cargo audit) were green at review completion. CodeQL (swift) and CodeRabbit were still pending; confirm those finish acceptably before merge if your policy treats them as blocking.
Author checklist: The PR body leaves cargo test --workspace unchecked while noting scoped local runs for gitlawb-node only. That is reasonable for this crate-local fix but worth matching against maintainer expectations before merge.
Branch freshness: PR base equals current main (a23c81d); no rebase conflict signal from this review.
Findings
🟢 Thanks for the contribution. I do not see any actionable issues from my review.
The change correctly mirrors the /stats repo-count visibility seam (list_all_repos_deduped, batch visibility rules, listable_at_root with anonymous caller, fail-closed DB errors) and applies it to bounty status counts, the leaderboard, and per-agent earnings. Deny-path coverage includes private vs public repos, root-rule override of is_public, mirror canonical-twin vs mirror-only behavior, and real claim→submit→approve persistence for completed bounties. Local validation: cargo test -p gitlawb-node --bin gitlawb-node bounty_stats — 4/4 passed in the review runtime.
Intentional behavior (not a defect): signed and anonymous callers receive the same anonymously scoped aggregates, matching server::stats() and the PR’s stated #104 pattern; per-repo bounty reads remain gated separately.

Each request loads all deduplicated repos and their rules before running the aggregates. On a large node, concurrent anonymous requests can repeat this work and reduce database throughput.
Bound or cache the visibility lookup with safe invalidation, and add a request-rate limit. Preserve complete visibility decisions and fail closed on incomplete lookups. Check peak inventory and request rates to size the controls.

Bound work on the anonymous aggregate routes.
Leaving this one as is for now. The cost is real: each anonymous call loads the deduplicated repos and their rules before aggregating. The /stats route in server.rs does the same per-request load, so it is not specific to this change, and bounding or caching it needs an invalidation design and a rate-limit policy across the anonymous read surface. That fits a separate change better than this fix. Happy to open a follow-up for it.

Merge readiness
Head moved after prior approval: GitHub shows APPROVED from jatmn on commit 5ed5b203 (mirror test + docs). Current head 680f468a adds claimant-index-friendly SQL (73cb017) and propagates visibility/aggregate DB errors instead of zero counts (680f468). Worth a quick maintainer re-read of those two commits even if the visibility fix itself was already accepted.
CI: At review time, test (stable), fmt+clippy, release build, Windows (non-blocking), MSRV, cargo audit, and CodeRabbit were green. test (beta), CodeQL Rust/Swift, and Docker smoke were still pending—confirm per repo policy before merge.
PR description drift: The opening commit message and parts of the PR body still describe visibility DB failures collapsing to an empty set (zero counts). Current code and bounty_stats_db_failure_is_not_reported_as_zero require 5xx instead. Cosmetic doc fix only; CodeRabbit pre-merge check already flagged this.
Checklist:cargo test --workspace remains unchecked; author scoped runs to gitlawb-node bounty tests—aligned with crate-local change.
Branch base: PR base matches captured main (a23c81d); no rebase conflict signal from this review.
Findings
🟢 Thanks for the contribution. I do not see any actionable issues from my review.
The change implements issue #477 by mirroring the /stats visibility seam: deduped repos, batched rules, listable_at_root(..., None), normalized (owner, name) filtering in SQL, and removal of the old unfiltered aggregates. Deny-path tests cover private vs public repos, root-rule override of is_public, mirror canonical-twin vs mirror-only behavior, claimant did:key: vs bare-key matching, and DB-down behavior (must not return HTTP 200 with zeros). Follow-up commits on head address CodeRabbit’s indexed-claimant concern and error propagation without widening scope.
Intentional behavior (not a defect): Signed and anonymous callers both receive anonymously scoped aggregates, matching server::stats() and the PR’s stated #104 pattern; per-repo bounty reads stay gated elsewhere. Bounty endpoints propagate visibility/aggregate DB errors as 5xx while /stats still collapses repo-count errors to zero—that divergence is new on the bounty routes only and is covered by this PR’s test; changing /stats is out of scope here.
