feat(node): persist upstream mirror configuration and transition state - #538
Adds the persistence foundation for continuous upstream mirroring and reversible authority transitions. Mirror configuration is stored durably with Rust and PostgreSQL invariants, and upstream URLs are restricted to credential-free public HTTPS repository targets before any future worker can consume them.
Continues #333 by @gnanam1990 (the commits are carried over unchanged; main was merged in as a separate commit, plus one maintainer commit that updates the migration tests to the Db.pool field introduced on main).
Motivation & context
This is roadmap slice B1a: persistence and validation only. It establishes the durable state required by the later fetch-worker, transition-executor, and writeback slices without activating mirroring on the live node.
Related to #330, whose owner-push enforcement must land before any mirror activation path is enabled.

What changed
gitlawb-node: add nullable mirror URL, status, transition job/phase, and update timestamp fields to repos.
gitlawb-node: add migrations 30-31 with a guarded NOT VALID constraint followed by validation in a separate transaction.
gitlawb-node: model stable and transitioning mirror states and reject inconsistent combinations in Rust and PostgreSQL.
gitlawb-node: validate upstream URLs as credential-free public HTTPS repository URLs, including loopback, private, link-local, localhost-domain, IPv4-embedded IPv6, and internal-host rejection.
gitlawb-node: make initial inbound configuration idempotent without rewriting mirror_updated_at, fail closed on malformed rows, and require canonical UUID repository IDs.
Maintainer commit on top: the new migration tests called db.pool() as a method; Db::pool has since become a field on main, so the call sites now read &db.pool. No behavior change.
Migration safety: v30 adds nullable, default-free columns and a NOT VALID check constraint; v31 validates it in a separate transaction so validation does not inherit v30's stronger table lock. Existing repositories retain NULL mirror fields and are not rewritten. No index is added until a worker has a demonstrated query requiring one.

New behavior is covered by tests (required for fixes)
cargo fmt --all and cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings are clean

Docs / .env.example updated if behavior or config changed (N/A: no runtime config added)
Touches DID / did:key, Ed25519 / RFC 9421 signatures, UCAN, ref certs, or P2P wire formats
Discussed in an issue before implementation
Backward-compatible with existing nodes and previously signed history (additive, nullable columns; existing rows keep NULL mirror fields)
Notes for reviewers
Deliberate non-goals for B1a:
no background fetch worker or webhook
no API, GraphQL, or CLI route
no push/write draining or authority enforcement
no upstream PR writeback
no automatic sync change
no live-node or production database change
The persistence methods remain unwired in runtime behavior in this slice. A future fetch worker must independently validate every resolved address and disable or validate redirects to close DNS-rebinding and redirect SSRF paths.
I ran the gitlawb-node suite, not the whole workspace.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for configuring and tracking inbound repository mirrors, including their status and transition progress.
Bug Fixes
Public URL validation now rejects .localhost subdomains and other non-public hosts.
Invalid URL errors for webhook and peer creation now provide consistent guidance.
Mirror configuration validates upstream URLs and repository IDs, and prevents changes that conflict with an existing mirror’s state.
Webhook deliveries to invalid or non-public URLs are now blocked.
The change rejects .localhost hosts in public URL validation and uses a shared requirement message for peer and webhook errors. Webhook delivery tasks validate stored URLs before sending requests. The database adds inbound mirror state, validation, configuration, lookup, and migrations.
Changes: Public URL validation and webhook delivery
Layer / File(s)
Summary
URL validation and API errors crates/gitlawb-node/src/api/peers.rs, crates/gitlawb-node/src/api/webhooks.rs
The public URL validator rejects .localhost hosts. Peer announcement and webhook creation errors use the shared requirement message. Tests check rejected requests and confirm that no row is stored.
Delivery tasks skip URLs that fail public HTTP URL validation, record an invalid_url metric, and log a warning. The metric documentation describes this result.
Repository mirror state
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Mirror state and database constraint crates/gitlawb-node/src/db/mod.rs
The database adds mirror status and transition types, validates mirror state and upstream URLs, and adds migrations for the mirror-state constraint.
Inbound mirror configuration and lookup crates/gitlawb-node/src/db/mod.rs
The database adds inbound mirror configuration and state lookup. Configuration checks repository IDs, upstream URLs, and existing state. Row decoding validates stored values, and tests cover configuration, constraints, migrations, and malformed state.
Legacy webhook credentials can appear in warning logs. Redacting the URL is advisable before merging.

Addressed at fe155e1: the webhook delivery loop now revalidates each stored URL with is_public_http_url and skips non-public targets (metrics label invalid_url), closing the legacy-row bypass around the create-time gate. The repeated-root-dot test now also covers node.localhost.. through the new .localhost suffix rejection. peers suite 44/44 and webhook tests 6/6 green.

If a stored hostname resolves to a private or loopback address, the new guard accepts it and delivery can POST to that address. Enforce the public-address policy on the actual connection, including after DNS changes.

I found one low-risk issue to fix before this is fully operator-ready. Mirror persistence and SSRF hardening otherwise look aligned with slice B1a intent.

Findings
🔵 P3 — Align webhook delivery metrics documentation with the invalid_url outcome
📍 Where:crates/gitlawb-node/src/webhooks.rs (delivery skip) and crates/gitlawb-node/src/metrics.rs (record_webhook_delivery doc).
💥 What fails: When a stored hook URL fails is_public_http_url at delivery time, the node records record_webhook_delivery("invalid_url") and skips the POST. Operators and dashboards that trust the helper’s documented label set never learn that this outcome exists.
🔎 Root cause: This PR adds a new delivery outcome label without updating the operator-facing contract on the metrics recorder. The documented set still lists skipped, which no call site uses.
📜 Stated contract:
Record one webhook delivery attempt outcome. result ∈ {ok, http_error, network_error, skipped}.
🏷️ Attribution: PR-introduced. Merge-base had no delivery-time URL skip and no invalid_url increments; head adds the branch and the new label.
📌 In this PR:
crates/gitlawb-node/src/webhooks.rs — delivery task records invalid_url on policy skip
crates/gitlawb-node/src/metrics.rs — docstring still lists only ok, http_error, network_error, skipped
🔒 Unchanged on main: Pre-existing unused skipped label in the doc; do not reinterpret it in this PR beyond fixing the documented set.
🔧 Required correction: Update the record_webhook_delivery docstring to include invalid_url (and clarify that it means policy skip for non-public stored URLs). Optionally add a brief comment beside the delivery skip in webhooks.rs so the two files stay in sync.
🛠️ Author fix: Close the operator-metrics contract on both listed surfaces in one pass. Do not add boot-time webhook pruning or database URL constraints in this slice.
🚫 Out of scope: Prometheus metric renames, webhook row deletion policy, and peer-style boot pruning.
Addressed at 5338a51: record_webhook_delivery's docstring now lists invalid_url and documents it as the policy skip for a stored URL that fails the public check at delivery time; the pre-existing unused skipped label is left as-is. A short comment at the skip site in webhooks.rs points back to the metrics contract.

Head 5338a51e12635d48f7a9b9703a9ac71e9b8ccd23 looks ready on the three-dot diff after the full 2x2 pass. Mirror persistence, shared public-URL policy, and delivery-time webhook revalidation match slice B1a intent; the prior metrics-doc gap is closed on this head.
Merge readiness
Review gate: GitHub REVIEW_REQUIRED / blocked until a maintainer approves. CHANGES_REQUESTED from @jatmn on fe155e1e addressed on 5338a51e (metrics invalid_url documentation).
Checks: Required test (stable)failed on the latest workflow run for this head: ipfs_pin::tests::discovery_record_elapsed_leaves_neither_row panicked (a spent deadline must yield the timeout arm, not a value: Ok(())). That test file is not in this PR’s diff; failure is likely flake or ambient CI timing, not mirror/webhook changes. test (beta), fmt + clippy, build --release, MSRV, Docker smoke, CodeRabbit, and Analyze (rust) passed. Re-run or triage test (stable) before merge.
CodeRabbit: Pre-merge Docstring Coverage advisory (~28% on touched complex functions) remains a warning, not a failing required check. Optional follow-up: log webhook_id instead of full URL on delivery policy skip (same pattern as successful deliveries already log hook.url at info).
Base freshness: Merge-base 5ed3381a6b775539aa9a61ce6b03c28ccbd7f717 matches live main; branch is mergeable with no conflict signal.
Prior review items verified on head: Delivery-time is_public_http_url guard in fire_event_async; .localhost suffix rejection + repeated-dot tests; shared PUBLIC_HTTP_URL_REQUIREMENT on peer announce and webhook create; record_webhook_delivery doc lists invalid_url.
