Summary

Resolves #123.

WP ULike 5.2.4 deliberately excludes admin-AJAX requests from its frontend comment-button renderer. SCE's Save response therefore contains the edited text without the like button. Replacing the whole comment content removed the existing interactive control.

  • Retain the original, comment-scoped automatic WP ULike control nodes when replacing saved text. Preserve live counts, liked state, handlers, and top/bottom/top-and-bottom placement.
  • Match the edited comment's data-ulike-type="comment" and data-ulike-id, leaving post controls and other comments alone.
  • If a response filter also generates like buttons, discard the returned copies rather than creating duplicates or replacing the live nodes.
  • Do not change PHP endpoints, ownership/nonces, Save request counts, or WP ULike plugin files. With no existing automatic ULike controls, the ordinary replacement path is unchanged.
  • Independent of PR GH#101: respect browser motion preferences and filter control reveal #121: this branch starts from current master, not its motion-policy branch.

Files and reference patterns

  • src/js/comment-editing/editing.js: internal updateCommentContent helper used by the existing successful-Save path, before the existing sceCommentSavePost lifecycle event.
  • dist/sce-editing.js: rebuilt using the configured webpack command. Unrelated admin-bundle regeneration drift was discarded.
  • README.md, DESIGN.md, readme.txt: integration contract and changelog.
  • Reference: WP ULike's installed wp_ulike_put_comments, WpUlikeInit::is_frontend, and wp_ulike_comments markup contract; no external source files are modified.

Local checks

Verified implementation: cdcc59d.

npx --no-install eslint src/js/comment-editing/editing.js
npm run lint:js
npm run build
git diff --check

All passed with no lint errors. Scoped ESLint reports seven existing warnings; the configured full JavaScript gate reports 113 existing warnings. Webpack has its existing admin-bundle size/performance warnings. No new test runner or test-only interface was introduced. PHP source and authorization endpoints are unchanged; local PHPUnit is not configured with a disposable _test database, and the browser site's database was not used for it. Current-head CI is required before merge.

Runtime Testing

  • Risk: medium (third-party control lifecycle during successful Save).
  • Level: runtime-verified.

Tested the actual built worktree on the configured local WordPress installation with Twenty Twenty-Five and WP ULike 5.2.4, using separate guest-owner, subscriber and non-owner Chromium sessions.

Scenario Observed result
Guest submission and Save Submitted and approved a real guest comment; Save persists, verified with WP-CLI. Its original ULike DOM node is retained.
Voted state Like before Save remains liked with count +1 after Save; a subsequent click successfully unlikes it, reaching 0.
Repeated Saves Original node identity and a single bottom control remain intact across repeated Saves.
Top and bottom Real ULike setting renders two controls around the comment; Save preserves both original nodes and their order.
Top only Real setting renders one leading control; repeated Saves preserve its identity and position.
Regenerated response copies Temporary consumer of the existing sce_return_comment_text filter returned two real ULike controls. Captured Save-event response contains two copies, but rendered content contains only the original leading control. Consumer removed after verification.
No duplicate handlers Repeated SCE.init() calls followed by Save keep one control; a vote after repeated Saves emits exactly one successful ULike request.
Subscriber Own comment's Save persists; both live top/bottom controls survive, vote/unvote still works, and Cancel restores saved text without replacing them.
Unrelated controls Post like control and the other comment's controls retain their identity.
Non-owner No editor markup. Save with a valid guest per-comment nonce returns success: false / You can no longer edit this comment. Original text remains unchanged.
ULike inactive Reload contains zero like controls; ordinary Save still persists, verified using WP-CLI.
Layout/diagnostics Viewport screenshots inspected at 1280x900 and 390x844; controls retain placement and timer wraps on mobile without horizontal overflow. No browser console/page errors; successful Save and vote requests return HTTP 200.

Temporary post/comments/user, vote data and the response-filter consumer are cleaned up. ULike settings and inactive status are restored. The local site remains available, linked to this fix's worktree. No release or live deployment is included.

📝 Walkthrough

The successful inline comment save now preserves existing WP ULike controls in the edited comment while replacing its content. The change also documents the retained controls, placement, vote state, and duplicate handling.

Changes: Comment control preservation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preserve controls during saved-content replacement
src/js/comment-editing/editing.js, DESIGN.md, README.md, readme.txt
The successful save uses a helper that retains matching .wpulike nodes before and after comment content and removes matching controls from returned markup. The guidance, README, and changelog describe the control preservation behavior.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in DESIGN.md: The editor guidance adds a requirement to preserve existing WP ULike comment controls and their placement, vote state, and handlers when replacing saved text; avoid duplicating response-provided controls and affecting the post’s like button or other comments.
  • observed — Modified behavior in README.md: Adds documentation describing WP ULike controls after an SCE Save: existing controls for the edited comment are retained with their state and handlers, returned duplicates are removed, and other controls remain unmoved. It also states that no additional permission or Save requests occur and Cancel does not replace comment content.
  • observed — Modified behavior in readme.txt: The unreleased changelog adds a fix to preserve WP ULike comment buttons, their vote state, and their top/bottom placement after inline comment saves.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/js/comment-editing/editing.js: Added updateCommentContent, which replaces the comment’s HTML while retaining matching WP ULike controls from the original comment. It preserves controls found before content at the beginning and controls found after content at the end, removes matching controls returned in the new HTML to prevent duplicates, and reinserts the retained nodes.

Explanation

Issue #123 requires preservation of the edited comment's automatic WP ULike controls, including live state, handlers, placement, and no duplicates. The changed updateCommentContent helper retains matching existing .wpulike nodes, removes response-generated copies, and the successful Save path uses the helper. The summary states that post controls and other comments remain unchanged and that no PHP endpoints, ownership checks, nonces, Save request counts, or WP ULike files changed. Reported runtime checks cover guest-owner, subscriber, non-owner, active and inactive ULike, Save, Cancel, repeated Saves, voting, placement, duplicate controls, duplicate requests, and saved-text verification. Reported lint, build, and diff checks passed. No PHP source changed, so PHP-specific checks are not required by the changed scope.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to the comment-editing replacement path and related README, DESIGN, and changelog documentation. The implementation directly supports issue #123. The documentation records the integration contract and fix. No unrelated endpoint, authorization, plugin, or administrative behavior changes are reported.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove matching controls nested in the Save response.

If a response filter wraps a matching .wpulike control in another element, comment.children does not find it. The Save then leaves the returned control beside the retained live control. Search descendants of comment for matching controls before reinserting the original nodes. (github.com)
