fix(history): prompt on workspace mismatch - #1660
When resuming a task saved in a different workspace, choose to open its original workspace or continue in your current one. Continuing in the current workspace updates the task’s workspace and resets its checkpoints.
Tasks without a distinct workspace can be resumed without an additional workspace choice.
Bug Fixes
Cancelling or dismissing the workspace choice stops task resumption.
Failed saves trigger restoration of messages, checkpoints, and workspace details, with improved cleanup retries.
Resuming a task preserves message history when updates overlap.
Historical task restoration now compares saved and current workspace paths. When they differ, the user can select the current workspace, open the original workspace, or cancel. Selecting the current workspace updates history and resets checkpoint data before task creation.
updateTaskMessages performs locked snapshot updates, normalizes message identifiers, and rejects missing or non-array snapshots.
Workspace selection and restoration src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/extension/api.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.history-workspace.spec.ts, src/extension/__tests__/api-resume-task.spec.ts
History restoration prepares items when workspace paths differ. Opening the original workspace, cancellation, or a live-task race stops resumption. The API creates a task only when preparation returns an item.
Checkpoint reset and rollback src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.history-workspace.spec.ts
Selecting the current workspace updates saved history, removes checkpoint data and checkpoint_saved messages, and attempts to preserve concurrent writes. Persistence failures trigger best-effort restoration. Backup cleanup retries up to three times.

Resuming a conversation from a different workspace can leave CLI users waiting indefinitely, and a history record without a message file cannot complete the current-workspace switch. Address these paths before merging.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟡 Moderate · up to 6d5c7
Workspace selection adds useful consent. However, overlapping resumes can let a failed move undo another successful move, and a custom conversation-storage location can leave incompatible checkpoints behind. These conditions weaken recovery; no new privilege escalation is demonstrated.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Workspace reset is outside the task-creation queue. Two resumes can prepare the same original history item concurrently. If one persistence operation fails while another resume commits the target workspace, the failed operation can restore old checkpoint rows and files, then revert history based only on matching workspace text. That comparison does not establish transition ownership, so rollback can undo the successful move and leave persisted checkpoint/history state inconsistent with its resumed task. This requires overlapping resumes and a persistence failure; it is a rollback-containment concern, not a demonstrated privilege escalation.
Medium · reliability · inferred: With a usable customStoragePath different from extension global storage, reset looks for checkpoints under the custom conversation directory, but the checkpoint service creates its repository under extension global storage. The missing custom-directory repository is accepted as ENOENT, allowing history adoption and timeline pruning without resetting the actual old-workspace repository. Subsequent initialization rejects that repository’s worktree mismatch and disables checkpoints, weakening rollback availability for the moved task. The split storage behavior predates the PR, but its use by the new reset introduces this incomplete-transition outcome.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated change is scoped to an existing historical task’s workspace identity, persisted timeline, and checkpoint repository on the extension host. Root selection also determines task-local file controls. The inspected path does not establish new tenant, service, IAM, or credential authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — For known differing roots, both identified user-facing resume paths now require workspace selection before restoration. The prompt names the original and current roots, and cancellation returns before task creation. This strengthens consent compared with the base; provenance of stored history workspaces remains outside the established evidence.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Serialize workspace preparation, reset, and installation under task-level transition ownership, and make rollback conditional on a transition version. Resolve checkpoint locations through the same authoritative path used by checkpoint creation. These changes would address the identified recovery and ownership drift without weakening the consent gate.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(history): prompt on workspace mismatch" names the main change: when a historical task belongs to a different workspace, the extension now prompts the user. The raw summary confirms this prompt flow in ClineProvider.prepareHistoryItemForResume and the API resumeTask path. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix. It does not cover the checkpoint reset or message persistence details, which is acceptable.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: it has a Summary, a Validation section (test procedure), and a Note. It does not link a GitHub issue in the template's "Closes: #" format, but it does state "Fixes #1602", which names the linked issue. Missing or weak items: the template's "Related GitHub Issue", "Description", and "Test Procedure" headings are not used; no manual test steps are given for reviewers; the Pre-Submission Checklist, Documentation Updates, and Get in Touch sections are absent; and the description does not state whether docs need updates. The Summary and Validation content is substantive, so the description is mostly complete even though it departs from the template layout.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1602 coding requirements are met. prepareHistoryItemForResume compares the saved and current workspaces and offers Use Current Workspace, Open Original Workspace, or cancellation. The current-workspace path persists the selected workspace, resets only the task checkpoint directory, removes checkpoint_saved timeline rows, and has rollback handling. showTaskWithId and extension API resumeTask use the prepared history item and stop when the user cancels or opens the original workspace. The reported focused tests cover restoration, persistence, checkpoint removal, rollback, and API resume behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed production code remains within issue #1602. updateTaskMessages supports atomic removal and rollback of checkpoint-only rows during workspace changes. The provider and extension API tests verify the required resume policy and persistence behavior. No unrelated production behavior is shown in the reviewed changes.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure conditions. prepareHistoryItemForResume shows a modal before using the persisted workspace path with vscode.openFolder (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2457-2471), so the path choice is explicit and does not bypass approval. The current-workspace path only updates the selected task history and removes that task's checkpoint rows (lines 2484-2599); updateTaskMessages performs a locked local JSON update and sends no data externally. resumeTask now stops when preparation is declined (src/extension/api.ts:268-273).
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed workspace-reset path still has a crash window that can lose persisted checkpoint state. ClineProvider.resetTaskCheckpointsForWorkspaceChange first awaits fs.rename(checkpointsDir, checkpointBackupDir) at lines 2539-2541, then awaits the message and history writes at lines 2548-2559. If the extension host stops after the rename, history still names the original workspace and checkpoint_saved rows remain, but the canonical tasks/<id>/checkpoints directory is absent and the staged checkpoints.workspace-change-* directory is unreferenced. The only rollback is the in-process catch at lines 2560-2592. No startup code references the staged directory. On later task restoration, RepoPerTaskCheckpointService uses the canonical path and ShadowCheckpointService.initShadowGit creates it again, so the original checkpoint repository is inaccessible while persisted checkpoint rows remain inconsistent.
Resolution
Make the workspace reset recoverable across process termination. Persist a transaction marker before staging, record the staged backup and operation phase, and run startup recovery before task restoration. Restore the backup when the operation did not commit, and remove it only after message and history updates commit. Alternatively, keep the original checkpoint directory until a durable commit marker exists; do not leave an unreferenced checkpoints.workspace-change-* directory as the only copy.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The workspace-reset behavior still lacks focused provider coverage for message-update failure. resetTaskCheckpointsForWorkspaceChange stages checkpoints, then calls updateTaskMessages; a missing or invalid ui_messages.json throws before history persistence, and the catch must restore the staged directory without changing history (ClineProvider.ts:2526-2593). The provider tests cover rollback after history persistence or broadcast failure, but no test triggers this message-update failure. The taskMessages tests only verify the helper rejects invalid snapshots (taskMessages.spec.ts:152-168), not provider rollback.
Resolution
Add a focused provider test with an existing checkpoint directory and missing or invalid ui_messages.json. Call resetTaskCheckpointsForWorkspaceChange, assert rejection, assert the original checkpoint directory and files are restored, assert the history write is not called, and assert history remains unchanged. Cover both missing and invalid snapshots if practical.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed resetTaskCheckpointsForWorkspaceChange path can leak a checkpoint backup directory. It renames checkpoints to checkpoints.workspace-change-<uuid> at ClineProvider.ts:2539-2541, then makes only three fs.rm attempts at 2595-2606. If all attempts fail because of a persistent filesystem lock or permission error, the method still returns the committed history and records no deferred cleanup. Repository search found no cleanup path for this backup prefix. The added test covers one failed removal followed by success, not exhaustion of all attempts.
Resolution
Make backup cleanup durable. Record the backup path for cleanup during a later task resume, provider startup, or another guaranteed maintenance path, and remove recorded backups there. Add a test where all immediate fs.rm attempts fail, then verify that deferred cleanup removes the backup.

historyItem is read before the modal, and the modal has no timeout. Should this re-read taskHistoryStore.get(id) after the prompt and build the update from {...fresh, workspace}? The store writes a delta against its cache, so a stale status or pendingAction could overwrite newer state, and the rollback at line 2401 has the same stale base.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Good catch, fixed in c47b767. Both the forward write and the rollback now go through atomicReadAndUpdate on the current stored record and change only workspace, so a status/pendingAction written while the modal is open is never overwritten from the pre-prompt snapshot. The rollback only reverts when the stored workspace is still the one we set, so a newer move is left alone. prepareHistoryItemForResume now returns the record as persisted ({...historyItem, ...persisted, workspace}) rather than the stale snapshot.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
showTaskWithId skips the prepare step when the id is the current task, but this path does not. Could a live Task for this id re-add the stripped checkpoint rows or rewrite workspace after the reset runs? Should this path use the same guard?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Yes. Fixed in c47b767 by putting the guard inside prepareHistoryItemForResume, so it covers both API.resumeTask and showTaskWithId: if any provider holds a live Task for the id, it returns the item unchanged with no prompt and no checkpoint/message reset (the API path then recreates the task as it did before this PR). The check runs again after the modal; if the task became live while the prompt was open, the resume is cancelled rather than resetting under a live task.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
These specs stub taskHistoryStore.get with a constant, so the real delta merge is never run. Could you add one test with a real TaskHistoryStore on a tmp dir? Change status or pendingAction after the snapshot is taken, run the reset, and assert the fresher fields survive.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Added in c47b767. The reset specs now run against a real TaskHistoryStore on a tmp dir, so the delta merge is exercised. The new case takes a snapshot with an explicit status: "active", changes status, awaitingChildId and pendingAction in the store while the prompt is open, then asserts the fresher fields survive in the cache and in history_item.json, for both the success path and a rollback (forced broadcast failure). Against the previous implementation both variants fail with status reverting to "active". Also added cases for the live-task guard and for not rolling back a workspace a newer write already moved.
Keep both taskMessages spec imports (updateTaskMessages and upstream's
formatErrorDetail), and pass a ClineProviderFactory to API in the resume
test now that the constructor requires one.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The workspace-mismatch prompt has no timeout, so the history item read
before it can be stale by the time the user chooses. Writing that full
snapshot back (and the original snapshot on rollback) could overwrite a
newer status or pendingAction through the store's delta merge.
Persist and roll back only `workspace` with atomicReadAndUpdate on the
current record, roll back only if no newer write moved the workspace
again, and resume from the record as persisted rather than the snapshot.
Skip the prompt and reset when any provider holds a live Task for the
id, and cancel if the task becomes live while the prompt is open, so a
live task cannot re-add stripped checkpoint rows or rewrite workspace.
This covers API resumes of the current task as well as showTaskWithId.
Move the reset specs onto a real TaskHistoryStore so the delta merge is
exercised, including a field changed while the prompt is open.

Skip checkpoint-message cleanup when ui_messages.json is absent.
When ui_messages.json is missing, updateTaskMessages receives a non-array snapshot and throws TaskMessagesReadError("invalid"). resetTaskCheckpointsForWorkspaceChange rethrows before it persists the selected workspace, so showTaskWithId cannot restore the task through the current-workspace path.
History migration creates history_item.json for an existing task directory without requiring ui_messages.json. Treat the missing file as an empty checkpoint-message set in this caller. Keep invalid existing content rejected.

Review comment at @src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts around lines 2547 - 2558:
In resetTaskCheckpointsForWorkspaceChange, skip the updateTaskMessages cleanup
when the task’s ui_messages file is absent, treating it as an empty
checkpoint-message set; use the existing path and file-existence utilities.
Continue rejecting invalid existing content through updateTaskMessages, and
always proceed to setTaskHistoryWorkspace after the missing-file case.

2549-2558: Missing ui_messages.json still blocks the current-workspace path.
updateTaskMessages throws TaskMessagesReadError("invalid") when the file is absent. The catch block then rolls back and rethrows. The user cannot choose "Use Current Workspace" for that task. An earlier review comment raised this. The latest code does not change this behavior.
The CLI sends showTaskWithId, which reaches prepareHistoryItemForResume. On a workspace mismatch, the CLI shim resolves showWarningMessage to undefined. The method then skips task creation, while ExtensionHost.resumeTask waits indefinitely for taskCompleted or error.
The CLI does not call API.resumeTask directly. Apply the non-interactive guard to the shared preparation method and preserve the previous CLI behavior:

Cover all setTaskHistoryWorkspace branches.
The existing rollback test proves that a newer workspace is preserved, but it does not prove that the guarded rollback avoids a second taskHistoryItemUpdated message. Add that assertion.
The legacy fallback is reachable while startup is incomplete because getTaskHistoryItem reads legacy global state before TaskHistoryStore initialization finishes. Add focused coverage for both no-record cases:
With expectedWorkspace, assert that the helper returns without calling updateTaskHistory or broadcasting.
Without expectedWorkspace, assert that the helper writes the supplied history item and returns the stored record.
