Fixes #2062

Problem

Each streamed delta of a partial say/ask (text, reasoning, attempt_completion's result, ...) posted the entire message to the webview (messageUpdated). Providers that stream small chunks therefore caused dozens of full re-renders per second (331 deltas in 10.5 s in the report), and partial markdown (half a table, an open code fence) changed the layout on almost every update.

Change

Task now routes partial updates through postPartialMessageUpdate: the in-memory message is still updated on every delta, but the webview post happens at most once per 120 ms (leading edge, plus one trailing post so the latest text always arrives). The queued post is cancelled when the message is finalized (partial: false) and when the task is disposed; finalization still posts and persists as before.

Notes

  • The RooCodeEventName.Message "updated" event shares this path, so API/CLI consumers also see fewer partial updates; the final version is always emitted.
  • Not included: rendering only up to the last complete line in the webview (also suggested in the issue). This change is extension-side only.

Tests

New partial message update throttling tests (fake timers): a 50-delta burst coalesces into fewer than 10 posts and ends with the latest text; finalizing cancels the queued post and delivers the final text; updates far apart post immediately. src suite (11,031 tests) and check-types pass.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Reduced the frequency of intermediate updates during streaming ask and say messages while keeping the latest partial text available.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Ensured queued partial updates are delivered in order when switching between messages.
    • Prevented queued updates from appearing after a message is finalized or a task is disposed, aborted, or abandoned.
    • Logged failures when posting updates.
    • Continued posting updates individually when they are separated by enough time.

Task limits partial ask and say webview updates to one post per 120 ms. It retains the latest update for a trailing post and cancels pending updates when messages are finalized or the task is disposed.

Changes: Partial message updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Throttle partial message posts
src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts
Task throttles repeated partial ask and say updates. It posts immediately when the interval allows and otherwise schedules a trailing update with the latest message. Tests cover bursts, delivery timing, updates across messages, and updates separated by 1,000 ms.
Cancel pending updates on finalization and disposal
src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts
Task cancels queued partial updates when ask or say messages are finalized and during disposal. Tests verify that finalization and disposal cancel queued updates.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "[Perf] Throttle partial message updates while streaming" matches the main change: partial message updates to the webview are throttled to at most one post per 120 ms during streaming. It is short, specific, and states the primary change. It does not cover the trailing post or the cancellation logic, which is expected for a title.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2062 requires fewer full-message updates during streamed partial responses. Task.ts now sends partial ask and say updates through postPartialMessageUpdate, which posts immediately at the leading edge, coalesces updates for 120 ms, and posts the latest partial message at the trailing edge. Finalization and disposal cancel queued partial posts. Final messages still save and post. Task.spec.ts covers burst coalescing, latest-text delivery, finalization, disposal, message transitions, and spaced updates. The issue's last-complete-line rendering suggestion is optional and remains outside this change.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The pull request changes only src/core/task/Task.ts and its focused Task.spec.ts tests. The implementation directly reduces streamed message posts, and the tests verify the throttle and lifecycle behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path matches the security failure conditions. The PR only throttles existing updateClineMessage calls for partial ask and say messages, with cancellation on finalization and disposal. It adds no new input execution, secret/PII destination, approval decision, or allowlist bypass. Complete messages still use the existing update path, and the tests cover queued-update lifecycle behavior.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence failure path exists. The PR adds only throttled webview/event updates and cancels their timer. New partial messages still await addToClineMessages, and finalized ask/say messages still await saveClineMessages() before posting the final update (Task.ts:2014-2016, 2047-2052, 2874-2881). The timer cancellation in finalization and disposal does not cancel or bypass persistence.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle leak or duplicate-work path is present. postPartialMessageUpdate stores at most one trailing timer and replaces the queued message without creating another timer. The timer callback clears both timer and queued-message references before checking abort and abandoned, so cancellation does not post. Partial finalization and disposeOnce call cancelPendingPartialMessageUpdate, which calls clearTimeout and clears both references. Abort and abandon paths are also blocked by the callback guards. The changed code adds no listener, watcher, provider, or other persistent resource.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description identifies the linked issue, explains the problem, describes the implementation and scope, and documents the test coverage and results. It does not include the template checklist or optional sections such as documentation updates, visual snapshots, videos, and reviewer contact details, but the required change and test information is present.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The new trailing-post callback suppresses delivery when this.abort or this.abandoned is true (src/core/task/Task.ts:1779-1787). The added tests cover finalization and disposal, but disposal clears the timer before execution. No focused test queues a partial update, sets abort, advances the timer, and asserts no messageUpdated post. No focused test covers the separate abandon path. Existing abort tests only check task state and events. This changed negative lifecycle behavior remains unverified. No Playwright snapshot is required because the change is extension-side update cadence.

Resolution

Add separate fake-timer Task tests for abort and abandon. In each test, queue a partial update, call requestAbort(false) or requestAbandon(), advance the pending timer, and assert that no trailing messageUpdated event is emitted.

Capture message values when each post occurs.

Task.say mutates the same ClineMessage object for later deltas and finalization. The mock stores that object by reference, so the current assertions can pass even when an earlier post had different values. Capture ts, text, and partial in the mock implementation at invocation time, then assert against those snapshots.

Add required coverage for ask finalization and disposal.

The test-file instruction requires regression coverage for relevant boundary and cleanup cases. The current suite covers queued-update cancellation only through say() finalization. Add fake-timer tests for a queued partial ask() update followed by finalization and for a queued partial update followed by task.dispose(). Advance the timers and assert that no late partial update is posted.

Assert both sides of the 120 ms boundary.

The burst test checks only the post count and final text after timers drain. The 1,000 ms test covers only widely separated updates. Neither test proves that an update remains queued at 119 ms and that the latest snapshot posts at 120 ms. Add a focused fake-timer assertion for these boundary cases.

Add a focused fake-timer test near the existing burst test in Task.spec.ts that
verifies an update remains queued at 119 ms and the latest snapshot posts at 120
ms. Assert both boundary states while preserving the existing burst and widely
separated update coverage.

Preserve queued updates for distinct messages.

If a partial say("reasoning") update is queued and a new partial say("text") message starts, the text message's next update can replace the queued reasoning update. updateClineMessage then emits no RooCodeEventName.Message update for that reasoning value. Flush the pending update when the message timestamp changes, or track pending updates by message identity. As per path instructions, “Verify extension/webview contracts” and “Trace changed inputs through normal, boundary, error, cancellation, retry, and default paths.”

Review comment at @src/core/task/Task.ts at line 1766:
Update Task’s pending partial-message handling so an update for a distinct
message cannot overwrite an earlier queued update; flush the pending update when
the message timestamp changes, or track pending updates by message identity.
Preserve emission of each queued value through updateClineMessage.

Every streamed delta of a partial say/ask posted the whole message to the
webview, so long markdown responses reflowed dozens of times per second.
Post partial updates at most every 120ms with a trailing post for the latest
text, and cancel the queued post when the message is finalized or the task
is disposed.

Fixes Zoo-Code-Org#2062

…cellation

- Capture ts, text, and partial at each messageUpdated post. Task mutates
one ClineMessage, so reading the mock calls by reference showed the
  latest values for every post.
- Add tests that a queued partial update is dropped when a partial ask is
finalized and when the task is disposed.
