feat(chat): add prompt history picker to the chat input - #2155
A leading "!" or "!" in the chat input opens a picker with the prompts of the current task, newest first. A query after the trigger filters the list with fuzzy matching, for example !fix.
Selecting a row replaces the whole input with that prompt. It does not send the message, so the user can edit the text first. Escape closes the picker.
The picker does not open for an exclamation mark inside a message ("Great!", "if (!x)") or for a markdown image ("").
The input placeholder now shows "! for user history" between the command hint and the drag hint. All 18 locales carry the new chat:historyHint key.
The original idea is trying to impove the user experience when facing long turn messages. But after a research, turn rail (message minimap) is not a good idea for current solution.
Current valid solution is using arrows in chat box to find the history prompts ( It works, but not very user friendly.)
My solution is to add a '!' command just like '@ for context, / for commands', '!' can trigger user prompt history menu. (! is a famous command under linux for history, I think it is easily accepted)
Test Procedure

Issue Linked: This PR is linked to an approved GitHub Issue (see "Related GitHub Issue" above).
Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (one major feature/fix per PR).
Self-Review: I reviewed my own code with care.
Writing Style: The PR title and description use Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100): short sentences, plain words, active voice, one idea per sentence, no contractions.
Testing: New and/or updated tests have been added to cover my changes (if applicable).
Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): If a user would notice this change at a glance (layout, theme tokens, brand elements, empty/error states), I added or updated a *.visual.tsx snapshot in webview-ui/. See webview-ui/AGENTS.md → "When a UI change needs a snapshot".
Documentation Impact: I checked if my changes need documentation updates (see "Documentation Updates" section below).

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Type ! or ! at the start of the chat input to browse recent prompts, filter the list, and choose a prompt to fill the input without sending it.
History appears newest-first with duplicate prompts removed. Press Escape to dismiss the picker; localized shortcut guidance is available.
Bug Fixes
Enter and Tab continue their normal behavior when no history option is available. In edit mode, Escape closes the picker before cancelling the edit.
Tests
Added coverage for prompt history, filtering, selection, dismissal, and edit-mode behavior.
A leading ! or ! opens a prompt-history picker. The picker filters and deduplicates history entries. Selecting an entry replaces the input without sending it.

The chat input passes prompt history to the menu, replaces the input when a history entry is selected, and suppresses reopening after Escape for the same text. The menu renders history entries, and locale files add the history hint. Component tests cover selection, dismissal, and ordinary text containing !.

The prompt history picker has no runtime defect identified in this review. The new visual regression test fails in CI because its snapshot baselines have not been committed, so the visual check will keep failing until they are added.

Explanation
The description includes the linked issue, implementation summary, test procedure, checklist, visual evidence, and contact information. The documentation-impact item remains unchecked, but the description is otherwise substantially complete.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure condition. The new history flow reads existing current-task/workspace prompt strings, filters and fuzzy-matches them in context-mentions.ts:143-177, and renders them as React text and an escaped title attribute in ContextMenu.tsx:151-166; it does not execute, inject, or send them. Selection only replaces the draft through setInputValue in ChatTextArea.tsx, and sending still uses the existing normal handleSendMessage path with its existing queue and approval-state checks.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR reads existing prompt history from clineMessages/taskHistory through usePromptHistory.ts:43-70 and stores only transient React state and refs. The changed ChatTextArea path updates input and menu state, while history selection calls setInputValue without sending or writing storage. The diff adds no persistence write, non-atomic operation, rollback path, or persisted-default consumer.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2106 is the only active directly linked issue. It requires a vertical turn rail beside the chat panel. The rail needs one marker per user-and-assistant turn, hover previews, click-to-jump navigation to the target turn, hiding or disabling for short chats, and a setting toggle. The PR changes do not implement these requirements. The changed files add a ! / ! prompt-history picker in ChatTextArea.tsx, ContextMenu.tsx, and context-mentions.ts. The picker lists user prompts and replaces the input text. It does not navigate the chat view. No turn rail, turn marker, hover preview, chat-view jump, short-chat rule, or rail setting appears in the changed files. The PR description also states that the author chose prompt history instead of the turn rail. The reviewed head does not contain the requested rail implementation, so the requirements remain unmet.
Resolution
Implement the #2106 turn rail with one marker per full turn, hover previews, click-to-jump navigation, hiding or disabling for short chats, and an enable/disable setting. Alternatively, obtain a changed or narrowed issue scope from the maintainers that explicitly accepts the prompt-history picker as the solution for #2106. Remove the wrong 'Closes: #2106' link if the turn rail is not part of this PR.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR changes implement a prompt-history input picker. They do not implement the turn rail that #2106 requests. The picker provides recall of earlier user prompts in the input box. It does not provide per-turn markers, previews, or jumps to turns in the chat view. The changed files include ChatTextArea.tsx, ContextMenu.tsx, context-mentions.ts, their tests, the chat:historyHint key across 18 locales, and visual gallery fixtures for the history picker. These changes support the picker feature only. The PR description confirms the picker is a replacement for the requested turn rail. The shared goal of finding earlier content does not establish that the picker satisfies the issue's requested behavior. Therefore the picker changes have no demonstrated connection to the requested turn-rail scope of #2106.
Resolution
Move the prompt-history picker work to a separate pull request linked to an issue that requests input prompt recall. Keep this pull request limited to the turn-rail work required by #2106, or obtain a changed issue scope that explicitly covers the prompt-history picker.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused coverage remains incomplete. The changed no-history guard in ChatTextArea.tsx closes the picker when promptHistory.length === 0, but all new component picker tests run under ChatTextArea.spec.tsx:531-541 with three history prompts. No component test verifies the empty-history case or that Enter still sends. Escape suppression is tested only immediately after dismissal; no test changes the dismissed text and verifies suppression clears after leaving the trigger. The new picker UI and history row rendering in ContextMenu.tsx have a Playwright test, but no chat-composer-history-*.png snapshots are present in the repository.
Resolution
Add component tests with empty clineMessages that type !, assert the picker stays closed, and verify Enter sends normally. Extend the Escape test to change the dismissed text, verify the picker does not reopen while the text remains suppressed, then leave the history trigger and verify suppression clears. Commit Playwright component snapshots for every visual theme, with the history picker open and representative rows showing the history icon, ellipsis behavior, selection state, and the updated placeholder hint.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The standing lifecycle failure remains. In the changed ChatTextArea.handleInputChange path, typing @foo schedules searchTimeoutRef.current at lines 692-710. If the user then replaces the input with !, the new history branch returns at lines 654-659 without clearing that timer. The timer can still post a stale searchFiles request while the history picker is active. The component has no cleanup that clears this timer, and the base code confirms this early-return path was introduced by this pull request.
Resolution
Cancel and null searchTimeoutRef.current before every history-trigger early return and before entering the history branch. Cancel it whenever input leaves the file-search context, including menu dismissal and other non-@ paths. Add component cleanup that calls clearTimeout and nulls the ref so unmount or restart cannot post a stale searchFiles request.

Escape now closes the picker before it can cancel an edit, so the draft is kept. Enter still sends the message when no prompt matches the query instead of being swallowed. Fuzzy matches keep newest-first order instead of fzf's ranking.
Add component tests for the Escape precedence and the no-match send path, plus a gallery story with picker-open snapshots.

Commit the four history-picker snapshot baselines.
The visual test fails in dark, light, high-contrast, and high-contrast-light themes because each requested snapshot is absent. Generate and commit those baselines so the required visual test can pass and detect later changes. As per path instructions, “Visible webview changes require a durable Playwright component snapshot.”

Add and commit the four Playwright snapshot baselines requested by the
chat-composer history visual test, covering dark, light, high-contrast, and
high-contrast-light themes. Keep the existing `toHaveScreenshot` assertion in
`ChatTextArea.visual.tsx` unchanged.

The picker does not open for an exclamation mark inside a message ("Great!", "if (!x)") or for a markdown image ("
").
The input placeholder now shows "! for user history" between the command hint and the drag hint. All 18 locales carry the new chat:historyHint key.

Closes: #2106
Description
The original idea is trying to impove the user experience when facing long turn messages. But after a research,
turn rail (message minimap)is not a good idea for current solution.Current valid solution is using arrows in chat box to find the history prompts ( It works, but not very user friendly.)
My solution is to add a '!' command just like '@ for context, / for commands', '!' can trigger user prompt history menu. (! is a famous command under linux for history, I think it is easily accepted)
