Summary

Adds image input support for VS Code Language Model (vscode-lm) models that accept images.

Changes

  • Sends images in user messages and tool results when the selected model and the VS Code host support image input. Models without image support keep the existing text fallback.
  • Detects image support from the live model list, so the UI and runtime use what the model reports rather than a static catalog. Unknown or ambiguous model selections are treated as not supporting images. Empty discovery results and errors clear old capability data.
  • Counts image tokens with the host's token counter and checks the measured input against the live and curated input limits.
  • Keeps existing Copilot behavior, text-only handling, context-window behavior, and the VS Code 1.100 minimum.
  • Adds focused provider and UI-hook tests. No dependency changes.

Validation

  • CI: all checks passed on 72eff1c (unit tests on Ubuntu and Windows, compile, e2e-mock, visual, knip, translations, CodeQL, Codecov patch). CodeRabbit approved. mutation-diff was still running when this description was updated.
  • Local: formatting and whitespace checks passed. Tests, lint, and type checks were not run locally because dependencies were unavailable; CI covered them.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • VS Code language models now report image support based on host-provided capabilities, including for models not already listed in the app.
    • Image inputs are forwarded to supported models and included in token counting and context-window checks using host-side image accounting.
    • Models without reported image support use text-only token counting.
    • Model selection uses host-reported capabilities when exactly one model matches; ambiguous or unavailable matches leave image support unspecified.

The VS Code LM provider reports host image capabilities, forwards supported image inputs for token counting, and checks measured image input against context windows. The webview retrieves host model data and uses a unique selector match to determine image support.

Changes: VS Code LM image support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Model capability metadata
src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts
Live model metadata includes host-reported image support. Model listings return identifying fields and model metadata instead of raw host model objects.
Image input and token counting
src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts
Image-capable models pass image-bearing messages to host token counting and receive checks against the smaller context window. Other models retain text-based counting. Tests cover image forwarding, fallback behavior, and context-window limits.
Webview model retrieval and selection
webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/useVsCodeLmModels.ts, webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/useSelectedModel.ts, webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/__tests__/*
The webview requests VS Code LM model data and applies host-reported image support when exactly one model matches the selector. Tests cover message handling, hook lifecycle, and selection matching.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(vscode-lm): runtime image input support" matches the main change. The raw summary and objectives show the PR adds image input for VS Code LM models, with host-reported capability detection, image handling in messages and tool results, and image-aware token counting. The title is short, specific, and uses the conventional commit prefix. It does not cover every detail, which is acceptable.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

PASS. The changed runtime paths have focused provider tests for capability detection, supported and unsupported image forwarding in user and tool-result content, native image token counting, live-versus-curated context limits, fallback and host capability states, and serializable model discovery. The new UI hook tests cover successful, empty, error, unrelated, disabled, and cleanup paths. useSelectedModel tests cover exact selector matching, no matches, ambiguity, unset capabilities, and unlisted families. No durable UI markup changed, so a Playwright component snapshot is not required.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the security failure conditions. getVsCodeLmModels now sends only explicit model metadata and computed capability data (src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts:1598-1611), rather than raw model objects, which limits exposure. Runtime image forwarding requires supportsImages === true (src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts:903-905). The new webview hook stores model-list messages in local query state (useVsCodeLmModels.ts:18-24) and does not execute them or bypass an approval or allowlist control. The existing model blacklist remains applied at vscode-lm.ts:1602. No secret or PII sink is introduced.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path exists. The PR fetches live VS Code model metadata, posts a request, and stores the response in an in-memory React Query cache with setQueryData. It adds no durable writes, transactional state changes, rollback flow, or persisted default propagation. Therefore no explicit persistence-integrity failure condition is introduced.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template in substance. It has a Summary, a Changes list, and a Validation section that reports CI results and local checks. It lacks the template's required "Related GitHub Issue" section with a Closes: # link, so the issue link requirement is unmet. The Test Procedure section is replaced by Validation, which partly covers testing. Visual Snapshot, Documentation Updates, Get in Touch, and the pre-submission checklist are absent. The author also states that tests, lint, and type checks were not run locally. The description is mostly complete on substance, but the missing issue link is a required element of the template.

Resolution

Add a "Related GitHub Issue" section with a "Closes: #<number>" line that links to an approved issue. Rename or add a "Test Procedure" section with the steps used to test the change, including the unit test files. Complete the "Pre-Submission Checklist" and state whether the Visual Snapshot is needed; the change adds UI hook logic, so confirm whether a *.visual.tsx snapshot applies. Add a "Documentation Updates" answer. Add the "Get in Touch" Discord username. Use the template's section headings.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The changed lifecycle path creates duplicate listeners and discovery requests. useSelectedModel now calls useVsCodeLmModels at webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/useSelectedModel.ts:122. Each enabled hook instance registers its own window message listener and posts requestVsCodeLmModels in useVsCodeLmModels.ts:15-33; the shared React Query key does not deduplicate this effect. ChatView and its nested ModelSelector both mount useSelectedModel, and active task views also mount TaskHeader and ChatRow consumers. A provider switch, remount, or restart therefore removes and recreates multiple owners and sends concurrent duplicate requests. The handler performs getVsCodeLmModels() for every request at src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:1577-1581.

Resolution

Create one shared VS Code LM model-listener/request owner per application or QueryClient lifecycle. Hoist useVsCodeLmModels above the multiple useSelectedModel consumers, or implement reference-counted singleton ownership. Register one listener and one discovery request, remove the listener only after the final consumer disables or unmounts, and prevent duplicate requests during provider switches and remounts.

Every row in this table uses an image-capable client (imageInput: true). Would it be worth adding a row with no capabilities, or with supportsImageToText: false, and an input above the window, so a text-only model that must not throw is covered? Today, removing this.supportsImageInput(info) && in assertWithinContextWindow (vscode-lm.ts:915) would not fail any test.

Good catch, thanks. Added two text-only rows (no capabilities, and supportsImageToText: false) with input above both windows. They assert the request is still sent, so removing the supportsImageInput check from assertWithinContextWindow now fails them. Also split the image-forwarding loop into it.each cases per the lint rule. Fixed in 408143e; CI is green.

Minor · Clear cached VS Code LM capabilities when the hook is disabled. · useVsCodeLmModels.ts:15-36

webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/useVsCodeLmModels.ts:15-36
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear cached VS Code LM capabilities when the hook is disabled.

Switching away from VS Code LM leaves VSCODE_LM_MODELS_QUERY_KEY populated. Switching back can therefore render the old supportsImages value before discovery replies. A stale false blocks image selection for a capable model. A stale true accepts pasted, dropped, or selected images and sends them to the extension. For an incapable host model, the VS Code LM provider then replaces each image with a text placeholder.

Reset the capability list when the provider becomes inactive. Unknown capability remains unsupported until fresh discovery completes.
