feat(usage): add a Usage tab with provider limits and usage history - #2225
This PR adds a Usage tab to Settings. It shows live provider limits and a usage history.
Provider limits
Two host services supply the limits: copilotQuota and providerQuotas. They cover GitHub Copilot, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Kimi Code, z.ai, MiniMax, NanoGPT, and OpenCode Go.
The payload parsers are pure functions with unit tests.
A key goes only to the default host of its own provider. A profile with a custom base URL shows "not checked". A profile on the default host is preferred over a gateway profile.
Only successful results are cached (60 seconds), per provider and per key. A failed refresh removes the old entry. Callers that ask for the same key share one request.
The webview sends a request id and cancels on unmount. The host aborts the fetches when the last waiting caller leaves, and the webview ignores an answer for an older request.
Copilot uses the GitHub session that VS Code already holds. It never prompts. Unknown usage shows "Usage not reported", not "0% used".
Keys stay in the extension host. The webview gets display-ready rows only.
Usage history
The history comes from local task history. The host records per-model usage (usageByModel) in task metadata, so a later change of the active profile does not relabel old requests.
Filters: Today, 7 days, 30 days, All time, and a workspace filter. A daily chart, breakdowns by provider, model, and mode, and CSV export.
Unpriced providers show tokens and "no price", not $0.00.
The chart steps by calendar day, so it is correct across a daylight-saving change. The view and the export share one "now" that rolls over at local midnight.
CSV cells that start with =, +, -, @, tab, or carriage return get a leading apostrophe.
Review notes
The Copilot quota endpoint (copilot_internal/user) is not a public API. A failure shows a quiet status row.
This PR adds no setting, so it does not touch updateSettings.
Mutation gate:mutation-diff reports 654 changed executable lines in the extension and 749 in the webview (limit 500). Most of it is providerQuotas.ts (467), UsageSettings.tsx (394), and usage.ts (181). The parsers and the view model are pure code with their own tests. I ask a maintainer for a one-time exclusion for this PR.
Test Procedure
pnpm check-types passes in webview-ui, src, and packages/types.
Webview tests pass (178 files, 2283 tests). Extension tests for the language models, the webview handler, and task persistence pass (53 files, 1097 tests).
Playwright snapshots cover the populated, degraded, and empty states in four themes.
The DST tests run in America/New_York and assert that the fixture crosses a clock change.
Manual: open Settings > Usage. Check each state. Click Refresh. Close the tab while a request runs. Export a CSV and open it in a spreadsheet.
Added a Usage section in Settings with cost and token summaries, daily charts, task and provider/model breakdowns, and date-range and workspace filters.
Export filtered usage history to CSV, or select a task in the breakdown to open it.
View quota and balance information for supported providers, including GitHub Copilot, with usage windows and reset dates where available. Refresh quotas or retry after an error.
Usage history shows provider and model details when available, and uses token totals when costs are unavailable.
Bug Fixes
Usage breakdowns reflect saved task messages and clear when usage data is no longer available.
Request cost and model attribution remain consistent if provider settings change during a task.
Usage date ranges and daily charts follow local calendar days across daylight-saving changes.
Added Usage settings translations across supported languages.
The change adds per-provider/model usage records to task history, provider quota retrieval, and a Usage tab in Settings. The tab summarizes filtered task history, displays provider limits, and supports CSV export.
Changes: Usage history and provider quotas
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Record and persist usage packages/types/src/history.ts, src/core/task/..., src/core/task-persistence/...
History items gain per-provider/model request, token, cache, and cost totals. Request records capture provider and model attribution. Task saves are queued, and persistence can clear stale usage breakdowns.
Parse and retrieve provider quotas packages/types/src/providers/vscode-llm.ts, src/services/language-models/...
Quota contracts and provider parsers support profile selection, host validation, caching, shared requests, timeouts, and cancellation.
Connect quota requests and render provider limits packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, src/core/webview/..., webview-ui/src/components/settings/ProviderLimits.tsx
Messages carry quota requests, cancellations, and responses. Provider disposal aborts outstanding requests. Settings displays quota windows and supports refresh.
Aggregate and display usage history webview-ui/src/utils/usage.ts, webview-ui/src/components/settings/..., webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/...
Usage helpers filter and aggregate history by date and workspace. The Usage view displays totals, charts, provider/model/mode breakdowns, and top tasks. Locales, fixtures, and tests support the view.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2216: Adds the initial Usage tab, quota retrieval, usage aggregation, and history fields that this PR extends.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2271: Changes prompt-cache TTL behavior and cache-write pricing; this PR persists request costs and cache counters for Usage history.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2264: Changes provider usage and cost outputs that this PR persists and aggregates for Usage history.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is mostly complete. It includes the linked issue, implementation details, test procedure, screenshots, checklist, and documentation impact. It omits some optional template sections, but the required information is present.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Active issue [#2215] is directly linked. The PR implements the Usage tab, provider limits, Refresh, local task-history filters, daily chart, provider/model/mode breakdowns, and CSV export. providerQuotas.ts and copilotQuota.ts keep credentials in the host, restrict keyed requests to approved provider origins, support cache and cancellation behavior, and handle Copilot session lookup without prompting. usage.ts selects tokens for unpriced usage and applies the same filtered range to the view and CSV. usageByModel.ts preserves provider and model attribution from request-time data. Localization and focused automated tests are included. No unmet coding requirement is established by the available evidence.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed source supports [#2215]. Task persistence and per-model attribution support accurate usage history. Quota services, webview lifecycle handling, CSV export, localization, and tests support the Usage tab requirements. The additional save-order and metadata changes prevent history corruption during concurrent task writes. No demonstrated unrelated production change is present.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
PASS. The changed behavior has focused coverage at the lowest valid layers. Schema and unset-value cases are covered in packages/types/src/__tests__/history.test.ts:68-100. Usage attribution, malformed messages, missing identifiers, model fallback, persistence clearing, and save ordering are covered by the new task-persistence and Task tests. Provider parsers, authentication, custom hosts, cache failures, cancellation, profile-read failures, and timeouts are covered in providerQuotas.spec.ts, copilotQuota.spec.ts, and quotaUtils.spec.ts. Host messaging, disposal, cancellation, and CSV export failures are covered by focused tests. ProviderLimits and UsageSettings have unit and branch coverage. UsageSettings.visual.tsx:8-105 adds Playwright snapshots for populated, degraded, empty, and long-text states, with the corresponding screenshots in the PR.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No concrete security-boundary failure is introduced. In src/services/language-models/providerQuotas.ts, API keys are read host-side and sent only to fixed provider endpoints; custom origins are rejected by sameOrigin/ownHost. copilotQuota.ts sends the VS Code token only to the fixed GitHub endpoint, and safeErrorMessage prevents credential-bearing error text from reaching the webview. webviewMessageHandler.ts posts only formatted ProviderQuota rows, not profiles or keys. export-usage-csv.ts validates the webview payload, allowlists the filename range, neutralizes formula cells, and requires the normal save dialog. The UI renders quota and history values as text without executing them.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The new usageByModel history can become stale after a message rewrite. Task.overwriteClineMessages() awaits saveClineMessages(false), but it ignores the returned false from a failed message write (Task.ts:1732-1735, 1801-1805). The delete/edit handlers then directly call saveTaskMessages() (webviewMessageHandler.ts:403-408, 573-578; checkpointRestoreHandler.ts:73-83), which persists the replacement messages without recomputing task metadata. If the first write fails and the direct retry succeeds, the message file contains fewer requests but history_item.json still contains the old usageByModel; the new Usage tab consumes that stale value through summarizeUsage().
Resolution
Route every message replacement through one awaited Task persistence method that serializes the message write and metadata update. Propagate a failed write to callers instead of silently continuing to a direct saveTaskMessages() fallback. If a fallback is required, recompute and persist taskMetadata from the messages actually written, and serialize that fallback through the same per-task queue.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The replacement lifecycle does not cancel provider-quota work. initializeWebviewView calls clearWebviewResources() when a new view replaces the current view (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:1158-1162), but that cleanup only disposes view subscriptions (:904-925). The new quota requests are stored in pendingProviderQuotaRequests; aborting occurs for provider disposal and current sidebar disposal (:962-963, :1191-1193), not for replacement. If the old webview crashes or is replaced before its React cleanup message is handled, its profile loads and provider fetches continue and can post through the new view. A new view also starts another quota request, causing duplicate work after replacement.
Resolution
Call abortProviderQuotaRequests(this) in the view-replacement cleanup path, preferably inside clearWebviewResources() before disposing subscriptions or immediately before its call at initializeWebviewView:1161. Add a regression test that starts a quota request, replaces the view, verifies its abort signal fires, and verifies the old request posts no response.

Why one PR. The Usage tab is one feature. The limits, the history, and the per-model usage record share types (ProviderQuota, usageByModel). A split leaves a half-working tab between merges. I already split the larger first PR (#2216) into three: time/date (#2223), fonts (#2224), and this one. The other two are under the limit.
Why the size is mostly parsers.providerQuotas.ts is the payload parsers for nine providers. They are pure functions of a JSON payload. usage.ts is a pure view model. Both have their own specs, including edge cases, DST, and CSV safety. The code that touches the network is small.
What I ask for. An exclusion for this PR only, or a one-time limit bump for the two packages.
If you prefer a split. I can cut it as: (1) the extension quota services and the message, (2) the history view model and the Usage tab. That makes the second PR depend on the first.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)
### When a UI change needs a snapshot
Skip a visual test when the change is behavior-only (state transitions, handler wiring, validation) — those belong in Vitest. Visual tests are for what JSDOM cannot verify.
[warning] 61-61: This synchronous effect update causes an extra render: Calling setState synchronously within an effect can trigger cascading renders. Prefer deriving or initializing the value before render. If the effect must read a browser API after mount, treat this as advisory or suppress it with // react-doctor-disable-next-line react-hooks-js/set-state-in-effect.
Effects are intended to synchronize state between React and external systems such as manually updating the DOM, state management libraries, or other platform APIs. In general, the body of an effect should do one or both of the following:
Update external systems with the latest state from React.
Subscribe for updates from some external system, calling setState in a callback function when external state changes.
⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Move the request-ID increment out of the component body so React Compiler can optimize it.
React Doctor reports that ++quotaRequestCounter on Line 48 is an update expression on a module-level variable. The compiler does not support it and skips memoization for ProviderLimits. The behavior is correct, and the module-level counter must stay. Wrap the increment in a module-scope helper.

A previous review already raised this point, and the thread is still open. getGitHubCopilotQuota returns a cached success at Line 91, before getGitHubToken() runs at Line 96. After a sign-out or account switch, a normal call within 60 seconds returns the previous account's quota. The new failure-clearing code does not run on this path, because no fetch happens. Invalidate the cache on session change, or store the token with the cached entry and compare it before reuse. Add a regression test that caches a result, changes the session, and makes a normal call within the TTL.
No custom-base-URL fields exist for these providers.
The four provider schemas expose API keys and provider-specific settings, but no base-URL setting. The requested ownHost change and custom-gateway test do not apply.
@coderabbitai the remaining rejection path of the quota load is closed in the latest push: when the signal is already aborted, withDeadline now consumes the rejection of the underlying work before returning (so a failing listConfig() leaves no unhandled rejection), and loadProfilesWithActive reports AbortError, starts no profile reads and leaves no timers. The regression case uses a rejecting listConfig (a plain function: a vi.fn attaches handlers to the promises it returns, which would hide the problem) and listens for unhandledRejection for a real turn of the event loop. Removing the line fails it.
On the other findings of that summary: the save queue (one save at a time per task) and its tests are described in my earlier comment, and the summary above still lists them as open only because it was generated before that commit.
@KarthickMahalingam I inspected head 47315488. The change addresses the remaining quota rejection finding.
withDeadline now attaches a rejection handler to the underlying work before returning for an already-aborted signal.
The regression test uses a plain rejecting listConfig() function. It checks AbortError, no profile reads, no remaining timers, and no unhandledRejection after a real event-loop delay.

Add a test that checks the merged messages reach taskMetadata.
persistClineMessages passes persistedMessages ?? this.clineMessages to taskMetadata. No test asserts that argument. A regression to this.clineMessages would leave the suite green. The new ordering tests can stay mock-based; they test save order.
Suggested test
Add a case in src/core/task/__tests__/Task.persistence.spec.ts that makes mockSaveTaskMessages resolve to a merged array that differs from task.clineMessages. Then assert mockTaskMetadata received that merged array as messages.

Return before the profile-list read when the request is already aborted.
loadProfilesWithActive calls source.listConfig() before withDeadline checks signal. If the webview cancels during the dynamic import, the call still queues a locked secret-storage read. Add an early signal check at the start of the function.

Update loadProfilesWithActive to check whether signal is already aborted before
calling source.listConfig(), and reject with the established abort behavior so
no profile read is queued for an already-cancelled request.
Add a valid slow profile read to the timeout tests.
The timeout tests use only reads that never settle, and only immediate reads that resolve. A shorter deadline would pass every test in this block. Add a profile read that resolves after 5 seconds. Advance the timers to that point, then assert that the profile stays in the result before the 10-second deadline.
As per path instructions: "Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions, including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases."

130-130: A cached success is still returned before the GitHub session is checked.
Line 130 returns cache.result before getGitHubToken runs on Line 136. Here is the trigger:
Account A loads Usage, and the success is cached.
Within 60 seconds, the user signs out or switches to account B.
The user reopens Usage, and the request does not force a refresh.
The early return serves account A's quota. The request never reaches a non-success result, so the "every non-success clears the cache" fix does not apply.
To fix this, choose one option:
Store the token with the cached result, and check that token after getGitHubToken resolves.
Clear cache from the existing vscode.authentication.onDidChangeSessions listener.
Add a regression test for this sequence: cache account A, change or remove the session, then make a normal call within the TTL.
1342-1352: trackListeners still decrements its count for any removed callback.
The helper still uses live++ and live--. A removeEventListener call for a different function also lowers the count. If withDeadline or until removed the wrong function, the abort listener would stay attached, and the live() assertions on Lines 1365, 1385, and 1439 would still pass.
Track each added callback in a Set. Delete only the callback that is removed, and return live.size. The path instruction requires this check: "For listener registration and removal, assert the same function reference was added and removed."
1789-1801: The per-task save queue holds each message write until the previous run finishes taskMetadata and updateTaskHistory. A slow or hung metadata or history write therefore delays every later message write. abortTaskOnce also awaits saveClineMessages(), so a hung earlier run can stall abort.
Existing review threads already raised this point. The author has not answered it.

The last Lifecycle Resource Cleanup warning is fixed in the latest push: getProviderQuotas rejects with AbortError before it asks any provider (Copilot or keyed) when the caller's signal is already aborted, so no fetch is started and nothing is left in flight. The regression test uses an already-aborted signal with a keyed provider and Copilot connected, and asserts zero fetch calls, zero Copilot lookups and that the next caller starts its own request. The previous version of that test only checked the rejection, so it passed while a request was still being sent. Removing the guard fails it.

Guard the api_req_started index before bindRequestToHandler.
lastApiReqIndex is computed before several awaits. The pending-edit path can replace this.clineMessages while those awaits are pending. The later access can then read undefined and throw a TypeError. The request loop then ends before processing the request.
The nearby updateApiReqMsg guard already handles this state. Apply the same guard here.

130-130: The cached Copilot quota is still returned before the session is checked.
Line 130 returns cache.result before getGitHubToken runs. Suppose a user signs out of GitHub or switches accounts within CACHE_TTL_MS. Reopening Usage then returns the previous account's allowance. The cache is cleared only when a request completes without success, and this path never makes a request. An earlier review thread reported this gap, and it is still open.

The three items of the last summary are addressed in the latest push:
Out of Scope Changes: the exportSettings import, mock and test block are removed from webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts. They existed only because the exportUsageCsv case was inserted right after the exportSettings case, which made git show that case's break as a changed line. The new case is now placed before exportSettings, so the diff is a plain insertion and no exportSettings line is part of this PR.
Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:withDeadline takes a function that starts the work, and checks the signal first. A request that is already cancelled calls neither source.listConfig() nor any source.getProfile(). A source that throws at once is treated as a failure (list) or a missing profile (read), with the timer and listener released. The tests assert zero calls on an aborted signal and fail without the check.
Persistence Integrity: the two save queues are now shared by every Task instance of the same task id (taskSaveQueue.ts, keyed by task id, dropped when idle), so an older instance's metadata cannot land after a newer instance's and replace it, usage-breakdown clear included. Tests: the queue module (order, independence between tasks, a failure does not hold up the next, cleanup) and a Task test with two instances of the same task; per-instance queues fail it. What this still does not cover is two extension hosts writing the same task: there the messages are merged under the file lock and each save's metadata comes from the messages it persisted, and a revision on every history entry would be a persistence-model change for all tasks, which I am leaving out of this PR.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)
### When a UI change needs a snapshot
Visual regression is screen-based, not line-based — the goal is a small set of durable "pixel receipts" for the surfaces users see first, not blanket coverage. Prefer covering:
- Onboarding / first-run surfaces (welcome view, hero, unconfigured state)
- Empty and error states (no history, provider misconfig, degraded modes)
- Theme-critical layouts that rely heavily on `--vscode-*` tokens or CSS masks/gradients
- One representative snapshot per user-facing screen — not per component

Line 130 returns cache.result before getGitHubToken checks the session. This sequence can occur:
Account A's quota is cached.
The user signs out or switches to account B.
Within 60 seconds, the user opens Usage without forcing a refresh.
The webview then shows account A's quota. A non-success result clears the cache only after a fetch runs, and a cache hit skips the fetch. The previous review thread reported this case. The current code does not fix it.
You can fix it in either of two ways:
Store the token with the cached entry, and compare it after you read the session.
Clear the cache when VS Code reports a session change.
Add a regression test that caches account A's quota, changes the session, and makes a normal call within the TTL.
The cwd value can't be undefined at this call site.
The cwd field in ExtensionState is optional in its type. The host, however, always posts a string. getWorkspacePath defaults to "", the ClineProvider.cwd getter returns a string, and the state builder always includes cwd. The webview's initial state also starts at "". So the path from the host to UsageSettings does not produce the undefined that makes "This workspace" include all workspaces.

Route every message replacement through one awaited Task persistence method that
serializes the message write and metadata update. Propagate a failed write to
callers instead of silently continuing to a direct `saveTaskMessages()`
fallback. If a fallback is required, recompute and persist `taskMetadata` from
the messages actually written, and serialize that fallback through the same
per-task queue.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Call `abortProviderQuotaRequests(this)` in the view-replacement cleanup path,
preferably inside `clearWebviewResources()` before disposing subscriptions or
immediately before its call at `initializeWebviewView:1161`. Add a regression
test that starts a quota request, replaces the view, verifies its abort signal
fires, and verifies the old request posts no response.

Make the date fixture deterministic across DST.
The all-time chart uses only dates with tasks, but the fixture subtracts 24-hour intervals. (raw.githubusercontent.com) On March 9, 2026 at 00:30 in America/New_York, the fixture skips March 8 after the DST change. lastDays expects March 8, so this assertion fails for a correct chart.
Freeze the clock before capturing NOW, and construct fixture dates using local calendar days.

line 191:
Update the date fixture used by lastDays to freeze the clock before capturing
NOW and generate dates by local calendar-day arithmetic rather than subtracting
fixed 24-hour intervals, so the expected dates remain stable across DST
transitions.
