fix(openrouter): send task session_id and cache-write usage for prompt caching - #2245
Three gaps reported in #1277, all inside src/api/providers/openrouter.ts:
Session affinity.createMessage now sends the task ID as OpenRouter's top-level session_id. OpenRouter derives its sticky-routing key from the first system and first non-system message unless session_id is present, and without it stickiness only starts after a cache hit is observed. Sending the task ID pins every turn of a task to the endpoint holding its warm cache from the first request. The value is truncated to OpenRouter's documented 256-character limit, and no session_id is sent when there is no task ID.
Cache breakpoints for new Claude models. Breakpoint placement was gated only by the static OPEN_ROUTER_PROMPT_CACHING_MODELS set, so a Claude model released after that set was last edited received no cache_control markers even though OpenRouter advertises cache pricing for it. The gate is now allowlist.has(modelId) || (modelId.startsWith("anthropic/") && catalogInfo?.supportsPromptCache === true), where catalogInfo is this.models[modelId] and only exists when the id actually resolved from the fetched catalog. That flag is derived from OpenRouter's live pricing.input_cache_read in src/api/providers/fetchers/openrouter.ts. The allowlist stays as the fallback, and Gemini plus every other provider keep allowlist-only behavior because breakpoint placement is not interchangeable between them. The gate deliberately reads the model-level catalog record rather than the resolved model.info, because model.info is not a live source: an empty catalog falls back to openRouterDefaultModelInfo (which hardcodes supportsPromptCache: true), and a pinned openRouterSpecificProvider substitutes that endpoint's record, whose flag comes from one endpoint's pricing.
Cache-write accounting.usage.prompt_tokens_details.cache_write_tokens is now mapped into the usage chunk's cacheWriteTokens, which src/api/transform/stream.ts already models and Task.ts already accumulates into cacheWrites and cost calculation. Previously the field was read as undefined and cache writes were dropped.
What this does NOT cover
Not verified against the live OpenRouter API. The wire contract is pinned to OpenRouter's published documentation (session_id as a top-level body field, max 256 characters, and prompt_tokens_details.cache_write_tokens in the usage object). No request was made against a real OpenRouter endpoint, so the end-to-end cache-hit improvement is unmeasured. The reported ~5x cost regression is not reproduced or quantified here.
completePrompt does not send session_id. That path is a single-shot completion with no task metadata in scope, so the sticky-routing benefit does not apply to it.
The static allowlist is not updated. No new model IDs were added to OPEN_ROUTER_PROMPT_CACHING_MODELS; the live metadata flag is what covers new releases. The TODO about a promptCacheStrategy field on ModelInfo remains open (its pre-existing typo promptCacheStratey was corrected in the comment only).
Gemini's implicit caching path is untouched. Gemini models absent from the allowlist still get no explicit breakpoints, matching prior behavior.
No cost-estimate change.totalCost still comes from OpenRouter's own cost / cost_details.upstream_inference_cost; cacheWriteTokens feeds the local calculateApiCostOpenAI path in Task.ts, which only applies when the provider does not report its own cost.
Session affinity is inactive when a specific provider is pinned. OpenRouter disables sticky routing when a manual provider.order is supplied, and createMessage sets provider.order / provider.only whenever openRouterSpecificProvider is a concrete provider. In that configuration session_id still groups the task in OpenRouter's Sessions view, but routing is decided by the pin rather than by the affinity key, so the cache-warming benefit is limited to that one provider's own cache. This is documented in the comment at the session_id spread site.
Tests
src/api/providers/__tests__/openrouter.spec.ts — 10 new cases at the provider request-construction and usage-mapping layer:
cache control is added for anthropic/claude-opus-4.8, a mock model deliberately absent from the static allowlist
Gemini breakpoints stay allowlist-only (a non-allowlisted Gemini model gets no markers)
no cache breakpoints are added when the catalog is empty and the id is not allowlisted
the cache capability is read from the model record when a provider is pinned, even though the endpoint record denies caching
no cache breakpoints are added when a pinned endpoint advertises caching that the model record denies
the task ID is sent as session_id
no session_id is sent when there is no task ID
an over-long task ID is truncated to 256 characters
cached_tokens and cache_write_tokens both reach the usage chunk, and both stay unset when OpenRouter reports no cache usage
Cases 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 were confirmed to fail against the pre-fix implementation and pass after it. Case 2 (the non-allowlisted Gemini guard) is a negative control pinning unchanged behavior — it passes before and after by design; a gate mutation that drops the anthropic-prefix conjunct kills it. google/gemini-9-pro is present in the mocked catalog with supportsPromptCache: true, so the negative control states its premise instead of leaning on the hardcoded default info's flag.

…t caching
What:
- Send the task ID as OpenRouter's top-level `session_id` so provider sticky
routing pins every turn of a task to the endpoint holding its warm cache.
- Treat a Claude model's live `supportsPromptCache` catalog flag as sufficient
to add explicit cache breakpoints, keeping the static allowlist as fallback.
- Map `usage.prompt_tokens_details.cache_write_tokens` into the usage chunk's
`cacheWriteTokens` so cache writes reach cost accounting.
Why:
OpenRouter only activates sticky routing after a cache hit unless `session_id`
is sent, so turns of one task could drift across upstream endpoints and miss
the cache. The static allowlist also lagged behind new Claude releases, leaving
them without explicit breakpoints, and cache-write tokens were dropped entirely
so cost tracking under-reported writes. Reported as ~5x cost increase on
Claude Opus via OpenRouter in Zoo-Code-Org#1277.
Impact:
Behavior is additive: no `session_id` is sent without a task ID, Gemini and
other providers keep allowlist-only breakpoint placement, and the usage chunk
only gains an optional field.
FixesZoo-Code-Org#1277
Prompt caching is supported for eligible Anthropic models, including catalog-listed models that report support dynamically.
Requests can include a session identifier, truncated to 256 characters when necessary.
Improvements
Usage reporting includes cache read and write tokens when available; cache usage fields remain unset when no cache usage is reported.
The OpenRouter provider now selects Anthropic cache breakpoints using model metadata, sends task IDs as session IDs, and reports cache-write tokens. Tests cover these changes and Gemini breakpoint behavior.
The provider enables cache breakpoints for allowlisted models and catalog-listed Anthropic models whose metadata reports prompt-cache support. Tests cover pinned-provider behavior, an uncataloged Claude ID, and an unlisted Gemini model.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2191: Both changes use OpenRouter model-catalog data; this PR reads the fetched model record to select Anthropic cache breakpoints.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2216: This PR supplies OpenRouter cache-write usage that connects to the other PR’s cache-write aggregation.

The description is detailed and covers the linked issue, implementation decisions, scope limits, tests, and validation results. It does not follow every template heading or include the pre-submission checklist, but the required technical information is mostly complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1277 requires stable session affinity, cache breakpoints for cache-capable Anthropic models, preserved explicit Gemini behavior, and cache read/write reporting. createMessage sends a present task ID as top-level session_id and truncates it to 256 characters. Breakpoint eligibility uses the allowlist or a catalog-resolved Anthropic model with supportsPromptCache === true; other providers remain allowlist-only. cache_write_tokens maps to cacheWriteTokens. Focused tests cover these behaviors, including omission and truncation cases.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #1277. Production changes affect OpenRouter request construction, Anthropic cache-breakpoint eligibility, and OpenRouter cache usage mapping. The tests verify these changes. The PR does not add unrelated provider behavior or change completePrompt, Gemini implicit caching, the static allowlist, or cost-estimate behavior.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the stated security failure conditions. In src/api/providers/openrouter.ts:230-236, metadata.taskId is sent only as a bounded session_id value; it does not execute input or include task content or credentials. At :335-339, cache breakpoints require an exact supportsPromptCache === true catalog flag and an anthropic/ model prefix, while the static allowlist remains active for existing models. The usage mapping at :579 only transfers provider-reported counters. No changed code exposes secrets or PII, executes unvalidated input, or bypasses an approval control.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. src/api/providers/openrouter.ts only adds request metadata, reads catalog data, and maps streamed cache usage into ApiStreamChunk; it does not add a file, database, or model-cache write. The changed request path still awaits fetchModel() and client.chat.completions.create(). The tests only stub requests and assert streamed values. No changed operation can lose or corrupt persisted state, and no persisted default propagation path was introduced.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path exists. The production diff only adds request metadata, catalog-based cache-breakpoint gating, and cache-write usage mapping. openrouter.ts adds no listener, watcher, timer, task, provider, subscription, or cancellation resource, and its existing stream lifecycle is unchanged. Added test prototype stubs restore the original prototype in finally blocks.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
A focused negative test for an unlisted Anthropic model with supportsPromptCache: false is now present in the pinned-provider case at openrouter.spec.ts:675-718. The required empty-task-ID branch remains uncovered. The implementation omits session_id when metadata.taskId is "" because it uses ...(sessionId ? { session_id: sessionId } : {}) at openrouter.ts:356, but the test covers only missing metadata at openrouter.spec.ts:746-760.
Resolution
Add a focused createMessage test that passes { taskId: "" } and asserts that the request does not contain session_id. Retain the existing positive, truncation, no-metadata, cache-capability, and usage tests.

Add a test for an allowlisted Claude model with supportsPromptCache: false.

Add a test for an allowlisted Claude model with supportsPromptCache: false.
supportsCacheBreakpoints now also accepts an anthropic/ model whose live metadata reports prompt-cache support. Every Anthropic model in the spec has true metadata, or falls back to default metadata that is also true. No test covers an allowlisted Anthropic model with false metadata. Removing the allowlist check would not fail any current Anthropic cache test. At the merge base, the allowlist was the only condition, so the existing anthropic/claude-3.5-sonnet test caught its removal. That model now also gets breakpoints from metadata.
Add anthropic/claude-3-haiku to the getModels mock as a top-level sibling entry with supportsPromptCache: false. The ID is allowlisted and no other spec test uses it. Do not nest it inside another model's object. An ID that is absent from the catalog uses default metadata, which reports supportsPromptCache: true, so the false-metadata case would not run.
Then assert that a request for this model still adds cache_control to the system message. Test guidance for __tests__ files requires false and unset cases.

Add an `anthropic/claude-3-haiku` top-level entry to the `getModels` mock with
`supportsPromptCache` set to false, then add a request test asserting that
`mockCreate` receives a system message with `cache_control` for that model. Keep
the model entry separate from other model objects so the test exercises the
allowlist path with explicit false metadata.

What:
- Gate the Claude cache-breakpoint widening on the model-level catalog record
(`this.models[modelId]`) instead of the resolved `model.info`, and require the
id to have actually resolved from the fetched catalog.
- Qualify the `session_id` comment: OpenRouter does not use sticky routing when a
manual `provider.order` is set, so pinning a provider limits the benefit.
- Add `google/gemini-9-pro` to the mocked catalog so the Gemini negative control
states its premise instead of leaning on the hardcoded default info's flag.
- Extract the repeated OpenAI `chat.completions.create` stub into one test helper.
Why:
Round-1 review found the widened gate fails open in two ways. `model.info` is not
a live capability source: on an empty or degraded catalog it is
`openRouterDefaultModelInfo`, which hardcodes `supportsPromptCache: true`, so any
`anthropic/*` id gained breakpoints the base allowlist withheld. With a pinned
`openRouterSpecificProvider`, `getModel()` substitutes that endpoint's record,
whose flag comes from one endpoint's pricing, so the same Claude model gained or
lost breakpoints depending on pinning and the fix silently disappeared.
Impact:
Behavior is unchanged for allowlisted ids and for every non-Anthropic id. A
non-allowlisted `anthropic/*` id now needs a `supportsPromptCache: true` record
from the fetched catalog, which is exactly what the live flag meant to say.
Strengthen the negative cache assertions to check every request message.
The three negative tests (Gemini, empty catalog, and pinned endpoint) assert messages: [{ role: "system", content: "test system" }, expect.anything()]. expect.anything() accepts any non-null value. A cache_control marker on the user message still passes these assertions. The system-message entry is strict, so a marker on the system message fails them. The gap is therefore limited to non-system messages. These tests are documented as adding no cache breakpoints.
No current code path adds a breakpoint while the gate is closed, so this gap does not cause a production failure today. A future regression that marks only non-system messages could still pass the suite. Add an explicit check that the serialized request has no cache_control marker:
