fix(xai): send body prompt_cache_key for Responses cache affinity - #2256
Add a task-scoped prompt_cache_key to the xAI Responses API request body in both createMessage and completePrompt, gated on the model's supportsPromptCache flag and clamped to 64 characters.
Why
xAI's prompt cache is stored per server, so every turn of one conversation must be routed back to the same server to reuse the cached prefix. For the Responses API the documented affinity lever is the body field prompt_cache_key; the x-grok-conv-id header is the Chat Completions / gRPC equivalent and is not read on this path.
Before this change src/api/providers/xai.ts sent no affinity identifier of any kind (git grep prompt_cache_key -- src/api/providers/xai.ts on main → empty), leaving server-side cache routing to load-balancer luck.
xAI docs
"For the Responses API, use the prompt_cache_key field directly in the request body. It functions identically to setting x-grok-conv-id — it routes requests to the same server for cache reuse."
— Maximizing Cache Hits
"Give each conversation its own prompt_cache_key and reuse it on every turn. Cache entries live on individual servers, and the key routes every turn of the conversation to the same one. A UUID or your application's session ID works well."
— Best Practices Guide
x-grok-conv-id header: deliberately NOT added
The original proposal prescribed this header. xAI's docs split the two levers by API surface:
Lever
API
x-grok-conv-id header
Chat Completions, gRPC metadata
prompt_cache_key body field
Responses API
XAIHandler uses Responses only (client.responses.create). Sending the header here would be inert at best, and a rejected unknown header under a strict gateway at worst. The constructor's defaultHeaders is untouched. The header string appears in this PR only inside an explanatory comment, never as a request header:
git grep -n "x-grok-conv-id" -- src/
src/api/providers/xai.ts:60: * `x-grok-conv-id` header is the Chat Completions / gRPC equivalent and is not

Both real createMessage callers pass a task id (Task.ts:5919 main loop, core/condense/index.ts:334 condensing, whose metadata is built at Task.ts:2665/5719). completePrompt carries no task metadata at all, and its only production caller builds a throwaway handler per call, so the session id is the whole key there and a completion is correctly its own cache scope.
Same task, two turns → same value. Asserted at body level across two createMessage calls.
Different task → different value. Asserted with two task ids.
Absent cleanly, never "". Omitted when the model does not support prompt caching, and an empty task id falls back to the session id rather than sending a blank field.
Clamped to 64 chars. Task ids are uuid v7 (36 chars), so this is a guard.
Usage accounting untouched
No usage code was modified. The xAI path already reads cache tokens through the shared normalizer (createUsageNormalizer in src/api/transform/responses-api-stream.ts:136-140 reads input_tokens_details ?? prompt_tokens_details then cached_tokens). git diff --name-only origin/main HEAD returns exactly the two files below — no normalizer, no cost.ts, no other provider.

Zero deletions. One pre-existing test that pins the exact completePrompt body was extended with prompt_cache_key: expect.any(String), since the new field is now part of that contract.
Tests
10 new tests in describe("prompt cache affinity") plus 1 extended. 8 fail on base (Tests 8 failed | 44 passed), covering key presence, cross-turn stability, distinctness, session fallback, the 64-char clamp, the no-empty-string rule, and both completePrompt cases. The two supportsPromptCache: false tests pass on base, correctly — base sends no key for any model, so they guard against over-sending.

Follow-up found, not fixed here
convertToResponsesApiInput (src/api/transform/responses-api-input.ts) drops encrypted reasoning items on this path — proven by execution, not inference:
An embedded { type: "reasoning", encrypted_content } block on an assistant message is silently dropped: the assistant switch handles only text, tool_use, thinking, so encrypted_content never reaches the wire.
A standalone reasoning item (the shape Task.buildCleanConversationHistory emits at Task.ts:6131/6189) throwsTypeError: message.content is not iterable at responses-api-input.ts:70.
Neither is reachable from the xAI handler today, because XAIHandler has no getEncryptedContent() hook and the xAI catalog sets no preserveReasoning, so no reasoning block is ever attached. It becomes live the moment anyone adds that hook — and per xAI's docs, omitting encrypted reasoning is "the most common cause of cache misses". That fix belongs in the shared converter (also used by opencode-go.ts), so it is deliberately out of scope for this affinity-key PR.
Hygiene
ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean, Prettier clean, tsc --noEmit clean, LF-only blobs, no conflict markers, src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged (0 added, 0 changed), no changeset, no CHANGELOG.
What: add a task-scoped `prompt_cache_key` to the xAI Responses API request
body in both `createMessage` and `completePrompt`, gated on the model's
`supportsPromptCache` flag and clamped to 64 characters.
Why: xAI's prompt cache is stored per server, so every turn of one conversation
must be routed to the same server to reuse it. For the Responses API the
documented affinity lever is the body field `prompt_cache_key`; the
`x-grok-conv-id` header is the Chat Completions / gRPC equivalent and is not
read on this path, so it was deliberately NOT added. Before this change
`xai.ts` sent no affinity identifier at all, leaving server-side cache routing
to load-balancer luck.
Impact: xAI turns of one task now pin to one cache server, raising cache-read
tokens and lowering cost on long conversations. The key is omitted (never sent
as an empty string) when no identifier is available or the model does not
support prompt caching. Usage accounting is unchanged: the shared normalizer
already reads `input_tokens_details.cached_tokens`.

Improvements
Supported models now use consistent prompt-cache keys across turns for the same task and different keys for different tasks. Requests without a task ID use a stable session key, and long keys are shortened to meet the service limit.
Prompt completions reuse a stable cache key when supported. Models without prompt-caching support continue to send requests without a cache key, preserving existing behavior.
The xAI provider now selects a prompt-cache key from a task ID or handler session ID. It adds the key to supported Responses API requests and truncates keys to 64 characters.

Explanation
The title "fix(xai): send body prompt_cache_key for Responses cache affinity" matches the main change. The xAI Responses request now sends a task-scoped prompt_cache_key in the body for createMessage and completePrompt, gated on supportsPromptCache. The title is 65 characters, which is slightly long. It is specific and conveys the primary change without noise.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template well. It has a Description section that explains the what, why, and how, including the stability contract and rejected alternatives. It has a Test Procedure section with exact commands and results. It covers the pre-submission checklist points on scope, testing, and writing style. It has a Documentation Updates section, but it does not tick either box. The Related GitHub Issue section is missing: there is no 'Closes: #' line, even though the template requires every PR to link to an approved issue. The PR objectives mention PR #2256, but the description does not link an issue. The description also uses contractions and some non-ASD-STE100 phrasing in places, such as the 'Why' section, which the template asks to avoid. Overall it is mostly complete, with the linked issue as the main gap.
Resolution
Add the 'Closes: #<issue number>' line under 'Related GitHub Issue', since the template requires every PR to link to an approved issue. Optionally tick the Documentation Updates checkbox and remove contractions to match the Simplified Technical English guidance.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure condition. In src/api/providers/xai.ts, getPromptCacheKey gates the value on supportsPromptCache, uses the task ID or a UUID v7 handler session ID, and limits it to 64 characters before createMessage or completePrompt adds it to a JSON request body. The value is not executed, used for authorization, or used to alter tool allowlists. Repository evidence shows task IDs are generated or persisted task identifiers, not secrets or prompt contents.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes only src/api/providers/xai.ts and its tests. Production changes create an in-memory sessionId, derive prompt_cache_key, and add it to Responses API request bodies. They do not read or write persisted state, introduce persistence defaults, or alter atomicity, awaiting, rollback, or partial-failure handling.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
PASS. The changed production path only creates a UUID value, computes a cache key, and adds prompt_cache_key to existing Responses API request bodies. It adds no listener, watcher, timer, task, or provider resource. The existing createMessage abort-listener bridge remains disposed in finally, including early generator closure; the PR does not change that lifecycle path. No changed cancellation or restart path duplicates work.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The fallback session-key isolation still lacks focused coverage. The changed code creates a UUID v7 per XAIHandler and uses it when taskId is absent in both createMessage and completePrompt (xai.ts:39, 74-82, 212, 303). The tests verify that one handler reuses its fallback key (xai.spec.ts:980-994, 1039-1049), but no test creates two handlers and asserts that their no-task keys are non-empty and different. A shared or constant fallback key would therefore pass the current tests and route unrelated sessions to the same cache scope.
Resolution
Add a provider-level test that creates two XAIHandler instances, sends a no-task createMessage or completePrompt request through each, and asserts both prompt_cache_key values are non-empty and different. Keep the existing same-handler stability assertion.

Use an overlength task ID with distinct characters.
The clamp test builds its ID from one repeated character. Every character matches, so a prefix clamp and a suffix clamp return the same 64 characters. A suffix-based regression would pass this test. Use an 80-character ID whose first 64 and last 64 characters differ.

Update the over-length task ID fixture in the clamp test so its first 64

prompt_cache_key equals the first 64 characters.
Add a two-handler check for the fallback prompt cache key.
Add a two-handler check for the fallback prompt cache key.
The fallback test named "should scope the prompt_cache_key to the handler session" only checks reuse within one handler. Each XAIHandler instance creates its own sessionId, and that value is the fallback key when no task ID is supplied. A fallback that returned one constant string would still pass the test. Two handlers would then share one cache affinity key, and no test would fail.

This is a test-coverage gap, not a functional defect in the provider. The existing distinct-key test uses task IDs, so the handler-session fallback has no cross-handler assertion.

Extend the `completePrompt should scope the prompt_cache_key to the handler

create a second `XAIHandler`, call `completePrompt` on both without task IDs,
and assert their `prompt_cache_key` values are distinct. Preserve the existing

What: reword the XAI_MAX_PROMPT_CACHE_KEY_LENGTH comment.
Why: review seat (PR Zoo-Code-Org#2256 mlarge P3) caught that xAI's docs do not state a 64-char bound for prompt_cache_key - the bound is OpenAI's documented one; we apply it as a conservative guard.
Impact: comment-only; zero code change.
What: empty retrigger commit, no content change.
Why: theme-fixtures died in @vscode/test-electron 'Resolving version...' download (recorded infra signature; no fixture diff emitted). No admin rerun rights on the org repo; push-retrigger is the documented recovery.
Impact: all CI legs re-run on identical trees (cc2cb36 content == this commit's tree).

* chore(test): drop test-only tool-use interfaces from shared/tools
What: remove the AttemptCompletionToolUse and WriteToFileToolUse interface
declarations from src/shared/tools.ts and retype their three spec consumers to
the generic ToolUse<"attempt_completion"> / ToolUse<"write_to_file">.
Why: both interfaces had zero production references at origin/main; the only
importers were three specs. ToolUse<TName> already resolves nativeArgs through
NativeToolArgs, so the named aliases added no type information over the generic
form. knip could not report them because knip.json exempts src/shared/*.ts with
a "!" suffix, so the deadness was proven by importer grep instead.
Impact: no behavior change. Type-level only: params widens from a Pick of one
or two keys to Partial<Record<ToolParamName, string>>, which accepts a superset,
and nativeArgs keeps its exact shape. src and webview-ui typecheck, knip dev and
production stay clean, and the affected suites (1246 tests across core/tools and
core/task) pass.
The TOOL_DISPLAY_NAMES row from the same plan was already removed upstream by
1cbc0f4 (Zoo-Code-Org#527), and the directoryExists dedup was stopped because the two
copies enforce different error contracts (the roo-config copy re-throws on
EACCES and is test-locked; the custom-instructions copy swallows all errors).

Cause:#2036 (xAI tool_choice → Responses-API shape, typed request body) landed on main and rewrote the same createMessage body region this branch edits for prompt_cache_key.
Resolution principle: keep both intents, drop neither.
xai.ts: kept main's typed OpenAI.Responses.ResponseCreateParamsStreaming body and its unconditional max_output_tokens / temperature assignment (main's comment retained), and placed the branch's prompt_cache_key block ahead of them. prompt_cache_key is a real field on the typed body (prompt_cache_key?: string, openai 5.23.2), so no cast was reintroduced. Main's mapToolChoice, malformed-allowed_tools rejection, and post-construction abort-signal bridge are untouched.
xai.spec.ts: kept main's mockResponsesCreate.mock.calls[0]?.[0] single-argument assertion style (main moved off toHaveBeenCalledWith when responses.create gained a second options argument) and added the branch's prompt_cache_key: expect.any(String) expectation into that same object. The branch's 9-test prompt cache affinity block and stubSupportsPromptCache helper are intact.
The merge is purely additive against main on both files: +195 / -0, so no main behavior or assertion was dropped.

convertToResponsesApiInput(src/api/transform/responses-api-input.ts) drops encrypted reasoning items on this path — proven by execution, not inference:{ type: "reasoning", encrypted_content }block on an assistant message is silently dropped: the assistant switch handles onlytext,tool_use,thinking, soencrypted_contentnever reaches the wire.Task.buildCleanConversationHistoryemits atTask.ts:6131/6189) throwsTypeError: message.content is not iterableatresponses-api-input.ts:70.Neither is reachable from the xAI handler today, because
XAIHandlerhas nogetEncryptedContent()hook and the xAI catalog sets nopreserveReasoning, so no reasoning block is ever attached. It becomes live the moment anyone adds that hook — and per xAI's docs, omitting encrypted reasoning is "the most common cause of cache misses". That fix belongs in the shared converter (also used byopencode-go.ts), so it is deliberately out of scope for this affinity-key PR.Hygiene
