feat(task): generate a session title from the first message - #2342
This PR adds automatic session title generation for new root tasks.
src/core/task/session-title.ts: Generates a concise 5–10 word title in the user's language via single-shot completion with a 15-second hard timeout. Strips <system-reminder> blocks using linear search (indexOf/slice) to prevent polynomial ReDoS. Falls back to the first 42 characters of the sanitized user message if the model fails, times out, or when rateLimitSeconds > 0.
src/core/task/Task.ts: Dispatches title generation as a fire-and-forget task in Task.startTask after the first user message is persisted. Subtasks, resumed tasks, and runs in EXTENSION_MODE_TEST skip title generation.
src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts: Adds setTitleIfUnset with an atomic read-modify-write file lock and disk reconciliation. A title is only written if none exists on disk.
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts: Adds applySessionTitle and cancels in-flight title generation on renameTaskWithId or deleteTaskWithId so manual renames and manual clears always win.
Test Procedure
Run focused test suites:
pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/task/__tests__/session-title.spec.ts core/task/__tests__/Task.session-title.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.taskHistory.spec.ts core/task-persistence/__tests__/TaskHistoryStore.crossInstance.spec.ts
Run mutation diff gate:
node scripts/stryker-diff.mjs ci --base bb6cbee59e7a29045950e018e81e6bd565a32881 --head fbf4c73823dd8e44f9b0f7d99c7a9142a209be04
Issue Linked: This PR is linked to an approved GitHub Issue (see "Related GitHub Issue" above).
Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (one major feature/fix per PR).
Self-Review: I reviewed my own code with care.
Writing Style: The PR title and description use Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100): short sentences, plain words, active voice, one idea per sentence, no contractions.
Testing: New and/or updated tests have been added to cover my changes (if applicable).
Test Helpers (test changes only): Shared test helpers (src/test-utils/, @/utils/test-utils) are used only for mechanical duplication; test intent and scenario-specific mocks remain visible.
Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): If a user would notice this change at a glance (layout, theme tokens, brand elements, empty/error states), I added or updated a *.visual.tsx snapshot in webview-ui/. See webview-ui/AGENTS.md → "When a UI change needs a snapshot".
Documentation Impact: I checked if my changes need documentation updates (see "Documentation Updates" section below).
- Generate a concise 5-10 word title from the root user message in the background
- Fall back to the first 42 characters of the sanitized user message when generation fails
- Enforce 15-second timeout on title generation without blocking the task loop
- Persist title via setTitleIfUnset inside the atomic per-task store lock
- Preserve manual renames and manual title clears over auto-generated titles
- Skip session title generation in Test extension mode and for resumed tasks or subtasks
New root tasks can receive an automatically generated title based on the first message without delaying task startup.
If title generation fails or is unavailable, a shortened version of the message can be used instead. System-reminder content is excluded from titles.
Bug Fixes
Existing titles, including titles manually cleared by the user, are preserved when a generated title arrives later.
Renaming or deleting a task cancels title generation. Pending titles can be retried when task history is ready.
Title updates appear in task history when the view is open.
Supported providers now honor cancellation and time limits for title-generation requests.
Eligible root tasks start session-title generation in the background after the first message is stored. The generator uses a completion or message-based fallback. Locked history writes protect manual titles and clears. Completion providers now forward usable abort signals and timeouts.

Summary
Conditional title persistence packages/types/src/history.ts, src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts, src/core/task-persistence/__tests__/TaskHistoryStore.*.spec.ts
The history schema adds titleCleared. TaskHistoryStore adds locked automatic and manual title writes. Tests cover conflicts, cross-instance changes, concurrency, persistence, and write errors.
Completion cancellation and timeout options src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts, src/api/providers/{base-openai-compatible-provider,kenari,openai,openrouter,poe,requesty,unbound,vercel-ai-gateway,zoo-gateway,kimi-code}.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/*
Completion providers reject pre-aborted requests and forward caller abort signals and usable timeouts. Tests cover option forwarding, omitted options, timeout handling, and cancellation.
Title generation and application src/core/task/session-title.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/session-title.spec.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.taskHistory.spec.ts
The generator sanitizes messages, requests and normalizes titles, uses a fallback, and manages retries, pending writes, and cancellation. ClineProvider applies titles through the history store and broadcasts updates.
singleCompletionHandler settles provider completion when the caller aborts. A test checks that prompt enhancement rejects and disposes its handler when aborted.

Explanation
[#2333] New root tasks generate titles in the background after the first message is saved. The prompt requests 5–10 words in the user's language. A 15-second timeout and generation failures use a fallback. Locked writes and cancellation protect manual titles. Resumed tasks and subtasks skip generation. Provider updates broadcast titles to the task list. Tests cover generation, fallback, persistence, cancellation, and concurrency.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
[#2333] Title generation, history locking, provider cancellation and timeout support, and their tests support the requested feature. The latest completion-handler change releases resources after cancellation. The complete incremental diff was unavailable, but the whole-PR summary supports the scope assessment.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused tests cover title generation, persistence, cancellation, and disposal. The Kimi Code test now aborts during token resolution and verifies that model discovery does not start. No UI layout or component changes require a visual snapshot. Prior failure addressed: Commit 2df5449 adds the pending-token cancellation test in src/api/providers/tests/kimi-code.spec.ts:164-182. It verifies AbortError and that model discovery does not start.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path was shown to leak secrets or PII, execute unvalidated input, or bypass approval or allowlist controls. Title generation uses the task’s configured provider, and task creation checks the organization allowlist.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed title writes use locked, atomic disk merges. Manual clears persist their intent, and provider disposal drains in-flight title writes. The deferred write path retains titles after transient failures. No changed persistence path meets the stated failure conditions.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
A cancelled task can leave a pending title entry indefinitely. Task.ts:3130-3143 starts title generation, but abortTask and disposeOnce do not cancel it. If history persistence fails and the task is removed, session-title.ts:248-255 retains the title and provider in pendingTitleWrites. No later save may flush it while the provider remains open. The previous VS Code LM listener concern is addressed: singleCompletionHandler now settles on abort and disposes the handler; VsCodeLmHandler checks cancellation after model selection.
Resolution
Cancel and clear task-owned title work when the task is aborted or disposed. Also prevent startTask from starting title generation after cancellation while its initial save is pending. Add coverage for both paths and for a failed history save.

generation during disposal, and prevent a pending task startup from launching it
after disposal.

- Line 149: Update the createCompletion assertions in the cancellation test to
verify that each recorded call received the exact signal object supplied by the
caller, using identity checks for both attempts; keep the timeout assertions
separate from signal identity.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add a Kimi Code test that pauses token resolution, aborts the request, then
resolves the token. Verify that model discovery and completion do not start.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Ensure cancellation releases the completion handler and its listener even when
model selection does not settle. Prevent a late model-selection result from
starting a request. Add a test that cancels title generation while model
selection remains pending.

Cancel and clear task-owned title work when the task is aborted or disposed.
Also prevent `startTask` from starting title generation after cancellation while
its initial save is pending. Add coverage for both paths and for a failed
history save.

Description
This PR adds automatic session title generation for new root tasks.
src/core/task/session-title.ts: Generates a concise 5–10 word title in the user's language via single-shot completion with a 15-second hard timeout. Strips<system-reminder>blocks using linear search (indexOf/slice) to prevent polynomial ReDoS. Falls back to the first 42 characters of the sanitized user message if the model fails, times out, or whenrateLimitSeconds > 0.src/core/task/Task.ts: Dispatches title generation as a fire-and-forget task inTask.startTaskafter the first user message is persisted.
