Summary

Release publication currently repeats Cargo package validation and lacks a signed identity for reusing the original native CI results. This change validates default/exact packages in normal CI, signs successful main-push validation, and makes publication verify the same commit, run attempt, jobs, artifact ID, and digest before and after deployment approval.

  • Keep actual crates.io upload on the stable GitHub release event using native cargo publish --locked --no-verify; ordinary CI only performs packaging dry runs. Preserve release metadata, registry-absence, benchmark-asset, and approval gates.
  • Complete applicable research-repo-tools v0.2.3 adoption: shared file discovery, Python checks, Cargo example execution, Actions allowlist checks, coverage summaries, explicit Actions updates, and managed-tool cleanup. Extend the existing action policy rules to composite actions and require manual dependency review for the CI signer workflow.
  • Strengthen release-evidence rejection tests and independent performance-report/inventory assertions; clarify numerical guarantees and documentation ownership; remove an equivalent exact-conversion branch. Include the staged cargo-edit 0.13.14 and bracex 3.2 updates.

Related: #298. Exact .crate artifact promotion is deferred to acgetchell/research-repo-tools#128; la-stack v0.5.1 retains native Cargo repackaging. This PR prepares tooling and documentation without bumping or publishing the crate version.

Validation

  • Local just ci passed: 204 Python tests, 1,031 Rust tests, default/exact doctests, all nine examples, benchmark compilation, lint, documentation, and Semgrep checks.
  • Default and exact cargo publish --locked --package la-stack --registry crates-io --allow-dirty --dry-run passed.
  • Those local runs preceded the final README whitespace edit and cargo-edit/bracex pin updates. Hosted PR checks must validate the committed head, including native Linux/macOS/Windows CI and clean Cargo packaging.
  • A separate final independent review has not been completed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Releases now require verified, signed evidence from a successful main-branch CI run, which is rechecked before publication.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected an edge case in converting very small numerical results to floating-point values.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that floating-point factorization success alone does not certify positive definiteness or affine independence, and updated guidance on release validation and performance reports.

- Validate default/exact Cargo packages in CI and sign successful main-push
native and packaging results for reuse during release publication.
- Pin evidence through deployment approval and retain the existing Cargo
upload, registry checks, scientific release assets, and approval gates.
- Adopt research-repo-tools v0.2.3 file discovery, Python checks, Cargo
examples, coverage summaries, tool cleanup, and Actions allowlist helpers.
- Expand composite-action policy coverage, strengthen performance and
release regressions, clarify numerical documentation, and simplify an
  equivalent exact-conversion branch.
- Preserve the staged cargo-edit 0.13.14 and bracex 3.2 updates.

Validation: local just ci passed with 204 Python tests and 1031 Rust tests
before the final README whitespace and dependency-pin updates. Default and
exact Cargo publish dry runs with --allow-dirty also passed. Hosted checks
will validate the committed source on Linux, macOS, and Windows.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds signed CI evidence that the crates publishing workflow verifies before publication. It also adopts shared repository tooling for file selection, Python checks, examples, and Actions validation. Additional changes update numerical handling, benchmarks, and documentation.

Changes: Signed Release Evidence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Evidence validation and verification
tooling/release_evidence.py, tooling/tests/test_release_evidence.py
The new adapter seals CI validation identities and verifies run, job, artifact, manifest, and attestation data. Tests cover successful verification and rejected or changed evidence.
CI evidence production
.github/workflows/ci.yml, tooling/tests/test_release_publishing.py
CI adds a Cargo package-validation job and a main-push evidence job. The evidence job seals validation data, attests it, and uploads the evidence artifact.
Evidence-gated publication
.github/workflows/publish-crates.yml, justfile, docs/RELEASING.md, docs/dev/MANAGING_CHANGES.md, docs/code_organization.md, tooling/README.md, tooling/tests/test_release_publishing.py, .github/workflows/dependabot-auto-merge.yml
Publishing captures and revalidates a pinned evidence identity after approval, before the existing registry-absence check. Release guidance and tests describe the evidence requirements and recovery behavior. The CI signer is excluded from Dependabot automatic approval.

Shared Repository Tooling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Action allowlist and workflow checks
.github/actions-allowlist.json, justfile, semgrep.yaml, tooling/tests/test_justfile_discoverability.py, docs/code_organization.md, tooling/README.md
The repository adds an Actions allowlist and a workflow validation recipe. Semgrep rules include action definition files, and tests and documentation cover the policy.
Shared file and Python runners
justfile, tooling/tests/test_justfile_discoverability.py, tooling/tests/test_maintenance_integration.py, docs/code_organization.md, tooling/README.md, tooling/__init__.py, ty.toml, SECURITY.md, pyproject.toml
Recipes route file discovery and Python checks through shared tooling. Tests check file selection and Python inventory behavior. The changes also update tooling notes and the cargo-edit pin.
Example and performance validation
tooling/examples.toml, justfile, tooling/tests/test_justfile_discoverability.py, tooling/tests/test_performance_workflow.py, tooling/tests/test_release_baseline.py, docs/performance/README.md, docs/code_organization.md
Example settings move to tooling/examples.toml and the examples recipe uses shared validation. Performance tests use synthetic timings and check report values; release-baseline tests validate policy-required inventory.

Numerical and Documentation Updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Numerical code and benchmark fixtures
src/exact.rs, benches/linear_form.rs
The subnormal conversion path now assembles the output bits directly from the sign and significand. Benchmark fixtures use an imported from_fn without changing their generated values.
Numerical guidance
README.md, src/lib.rs
The Gram-matrix caveat states that floating-point factorization is not a certificate. The guide ordering and interval-matrix workspace description also change.

Possibly related issues

  • acgetchell/research-repo-tools#122: This PR implements the la-stack consumer work described by the tracker, including verification and reuse of signed main-push evidence.
  • acgetchell/research-repo-tools#128: This PR retains native Cargo publishing and does not introduce exact .crate archive promotion, matching the issue’s stated boundary.

Possibly related PRs

  • acgetchell/la-stack#297: Both PRs update shared-tooling adoption and repository ownership; this PR extends the adoption and adds release-evidence integration.
  • acgetchell/la-stack#299: Both PRs use shared tooling v0.2.3 and update its repository contract; this PR continues the integration in recipes, checks, and release workflows.
Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 472be

The changes add signed release evidence and shared tooling. The only remaining issue is a narrow gap in action-policy enforcement for future composite actions. It does not affect current behavior and is cheap to fix, so it should be tracked or resolved but need not block merge.

Apply the repository allowlist to composite actions.

If a composite action references pinned actions/setup-python, this Semgrep rule accepts it. The action is absent from .github/actions-allowlist.json, and workflow-allowlist-check scans only .github/workflows. The composite dependency therefore passes both checks without repository-allowlist approval. Align the permitted names and validate composite-action references against the same policy. The shared checker checks only the input paths supplied to it. (github.com)

- Apply the repository action allowlist to composite-action checks and remove
three stale Semgrep exceptions for unapproved actions.
- Cover pinned-but-unapproved references and subpaths with regression tests.
- Exclude deliberately invalid Semgrep fixtures from CodeQL analysis while
  retaining their dedicated fixture validation.

Validation: 205 Python tests passed; configuration checks, Semgrep production
and fixture checks, and spelling passed.
