Owner

Routine release acquisition includes peer operations that the README does not publish and omits several public la-stack workload families. This separates the public la-stack release signal from the narrow peer comparison while preserving the existing LU graph through D=64.

Changes

  • Acquire 646 default-feature and 608 exact-feature la-stack cases at both revisions under one captured harness. Hosted release acquisition measures these 1,254 la-stack cases only.
  • Acquire exactly 16 native nalgebra/faer LU-factorization-plus-one-solve cases once in the local baseline phase at D=2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 16, 32, and 64. Reuse the matching current la-stack timings from the full suite.
  • Add public construction, storage, mutation, symmetry, interval determinant, and scalar/array conversion coverage, and include the existing angle, Gram, interval, certified linear-form, and structured rational workloads. Dimensionless scalar cases have one owner.
  • Keep broad peer comparisons and implementation diagnostics opt-in. Full scratch/retained plots select LU solve; broad plots remain in the non-exact diagnostic workflow.
  • Separate hosted and local completeness policies, retain correctness gates and exact raw-byte checks, print acquisition budgets, and record recipe elapsed time and failure status.
  • Preserve the README graph, immutable historical evidence, and measurement-free report/README publication.

Validation

  • Local just ci passed: 281 Python tests, 1,031 Rust tests, both doctest configurations, examples, static checks, and benchmark compilation.
  • Native discovery exactly matches the independent 1,254-case la-stack catalog.
  • All 1,270 selected native cases passed Criterion --test smoke checks, including the 16 peers.

Measurement limits

Full before/after wall-time acquisition has not been run. Expanded public coverage yields 2,524 local measurements and a nominal 336.5-minute warmup-plus-measurement budget before compilation, correctness gates, and analysis. Removing peer cases alone does not establish a total runtime improvement. The new hosted deadlines also need validation on an actual runner.

Closes #301

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added public API benchmark coverage for matrix, vector, interval, tolerance, symmetry, scalar, and exact-arithmetic operations.
    • Expanded exact-conversion benchmarks to include array inputs.
  • Updates
    • Release benchmark runs now cover public workloads in default and exact configurations, with updated time budgets and summaries.
    • Local full runs include a separate set of peer LU-and-solve benchmarks; hosted runs focus on la-stack.
    • Updated performance documentation and reporting options. Retained and scratch plots no longer include broad peer comparisons for most benchmark families.

- Separate full public la-stack coverage from the 16 local peer LU-and-solve
cases, and omit peer timings from hosted release acquisition.
- Cover construction, storage, angles, Gram matrices, interval filters,
certified linear forms, and exact conversions with dedicated native cases.
- Keep retained LU publication retryable, preserve historical evidence, and
expose case budgets and elapsed runtime without reducing sampling.
- Validate with just ci and all 1,270 selected native smoke checks.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The release benchmark policy now uses public default and exact workloads, with peer LU-and-solve measurements limited to local baseline acquisition. The change adds public API benchmarks, updates release timing and validation, and revises report declarations and documentation.

Changes: Public benchmark acquisition

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release workload catalogs
tooling/performance-policy.toml, tooling/criterion-inventory.toml
The release catalog defines default and exact public cases. The Criterion inventory requires 1,254 cases and replaces the prior suite declarations with public-default and public-exact.
Public API benchmark coverage
Cargo.toml, benches/public_api.rs, benches/exact.rs, docs/code_organization.md
A new benchmark target covers floating-point, interval, scalar, and feature-gated exact APIs. The exact benchmark adds array-representation conversion cases.
Acquisition and release workflow
tooling/performance.just, justfile, .github/workflows/release-benchmarks.yml, docs/RELEASING.md
Acquisition recipes run default and exact public workloads; baseline acquisition also runs peer workloads once. Release timeouts are 60 minutes for preparation, 140 minutes for default workloads, and 130 minutes for exact workloads.
Validation and report policy
tests/tooling/*, docs/BENCHMARKING.md, tooling/README.md, docs/code_organization.md, tooling/plots/{scratch,retained}/*
Tests now check public suite coverage and workflow behavior. Documentation describes the new acquisition policy and historical-run handling. Existing scratch and retained plot configurations for broad benchmark comparisons are removed.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the statement that opt-in diagnostics remain in complete samples.

Line 251 says diagnostic cases remain in the complete samples. The guide defines diagnostics as opt-in, and the complete run does not measure them. Readers can mistake missing diagnostic samples for report-only omissions.

📝 Suggested wording
-Baseline measurements include nalgebra and faer; current measurements reuse
-those baseline-phase peers and measure la-stack and the exact suite. Diagnostic
-cases remain in the complete samples even when omitted from selected report rows.

+samples contain the selected public workloads and the 16 baseline peer cases.
+Opt-in diagnostics are not measured by the complete run; collect them with their
+explicit diagnostic workflow.
