Ansel Co-Op

Ansel photo-editing app and its infrastructure

Ansel

A raw photo editor and image library for photographers who want real control over their images — and over the future of the tool they depend on.

What it is

Forked from darktable 4.0 in 2022, developed since with its own design vision. Linux, Windows, macOS. GNU GPL v3. Currently alpha, with nightly builds.

Ansel aims to be an instrument of visual expression: it puts the retoucher back at the centre of the processing, gives the most direct access to image data we can manage, and offers colour controls that mean something optically or perceptually. It does three things — cull, edit, archive — and doesn't pretend to support every conceivable workflow.

Strengths

  • Scene-referred, HDR-native pipeline. Pixels stay light emissions until the last optically-bound filter, then switch once to a perceptual framework.
  • Fewer tools, better tools. Half-working features get removed, not kept for someone's habit.
  • Low complexity, low maintenance cost. Free software survives only if the tedious daily maintenance stays feasible.
  • Desktop-native behaviour, instead of reinvented incompatible GUI conventions.
  • No hostage-taking. darktable ≤ 4.0 histories are readable; your photos stay on your machine.

Beyond open-source code: a cooperative

Full argument here.

The GPL grants engineers' freedom — the right to read and modify code, useful to under 6 % of humanity. To everyone else it offers no warranty, no support, no say. Donations turn users into passive consumers; foundations keep a hierarchy of those who know over those who need; developers burn out doing unpaid support. Two parallel one-way transactions.

Ansel's project is to close the circle, as a cooperative owned by its users and its workers:

  • Everyone is a member-shareholder with one vote in the general assembly.
  • Members secure the yearly budget; the assembly votes the working hours, the rate, and the priorities.
  • The assembly ranks high-level priorities — not implementation details, which suit democracy poorly.
  • Paid workers take tasks in order until the budget runs out, then report back. Income visibility without burnout.
  • Any member can become a paid worker. No work is free, and work isn't only code.

Known limits — majority rule crushing structural minorities, groupthink, a socially homogeneous starting base, expert/layman asymmetry — are acknowledged on the page above rather than wished away. They're the work.
