What changed

android_read and android_act no longer return structuredContent. Every result is {"content": [...], "isError": ...}, and the status that field used to carry is already in the text.

Why

The server declares no outputSchema, but returned structuredContent on every result anyway. A client that takes structured content in preference to content — Claude Code 2.1.302 does — then handed the model {"status":"ok"} in place of the screen. Every android_read reached the model as those 15 characters, for screen, status, notifications, help, and find alike, and a failed read arrived as a bare status code with its explanation dropped. The tool was unusable from that client.

Evidence, from a Claude Code session transcript:

tool_result.content = "{\"status\":\"ok\"}"      (15 characters)
mcpMeta             = {"structuredContent":{"status":"ok"}}

Against the same server, a direct MCP call returns content[0].text with the full screen (243 characters), so the data was always there — the client simply preferred the other field. Per MCP, structuredContent belongs with a tool that declares an outputSchema; this one never has.

Present since at least v1.1.2 (computer/src/adapter.rs:103 in that tag).

Safety and compatibility

  • No device-specific serials, tokens, private paths, media, or signing material are included.
  • No new way for an agent to run a shell, adb, or page JavaScript; no command form changed (computer/src/spec.rs is untouched).
  • Destructive/privacy-sensitive behavior unchanged.
  • Temporary files, processes, emulators, and device state unchanged.

Compatibility: this removes a field that docs/reference/agent-protocol.md documented, so a client reading structuredContent.status or .changed programmatically stops seeing it. Those values remain in the text. Keeping the field is not an option while it costs every Claude Code read its content.

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo clippy --locked --workspace --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings
  • cargo test --locked --workspace --all-targets — 158 passed, 0 failed
  • cargo xtask verify — see below; the remaining failure is on main already
  • npm test and npm run lint

Verified end to end over MCP against a real device (OPPO/OnePlus PKX110, Android 16): structuredContent is gone and content[0].text carries the screen.

cargo xtask verify on this branch

Two gates failed. Both are pre-existing, and neither is caused by this change:

  • docs_budget docs/reference/agent-protocol.md bytes=2855 max_bytes=2800 — also fails on upstream main, where the file is byte-identical. This commit drops the sentence documenting structuredContent, which brings the file to 2787 bytes, so the gate now passes.
  • artifact_sizes binary_bytes=1070080 max_binary=1000000 — also fails on upstream main. I measured both: main builds target/dist/au.exe at 1,069,568 bytes, this branch at 1,070,080. Both are about 70 KB over the limit.

Release impact

  • No breaking change.
  • Breaking change documented in the changelog.

structuredContent is removed, recorded under Unreleased. No migration is needed for agents: the status was always in the text.

What I could not test

Windows x86_64 only, and one device (OPPO/OnePlus PKX110, Android 16). The change is client-independent, but I have not run it against Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, or Claude Desktop to see whether any of them relied on structuredContent.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • MCP tool responses now provide screen text consistently, preventing empty reads for clients that prefer structured responses.
    • Failure explanations remain available in the text response.

The server declares no outputSchema but returned structuredContent on every
result anyway. Claude Code takes structured content in preference to content,
so android_read handed the model {"status":"ok"} in place of the screen, and a
failed read arrived as a bare status code with its explanation dropped. Every
read was unusable in that client. Present since at least v1.1.2.

content alone carries what a model needs: the status is already in the text,
and the error path keeps its message. agent-protocol.md documented the removed
field, so it goes too; the entry lands under Unreleased.

📝 Walkthrough

MCP tool responses no longer include structuredContent. Error responses retain text and isError, while successful responses retain text and eligible image content. The test, protocol reference, and changelog reflect this output.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to fe08b

The adapter currently forwards screen text, but its regression test does not verify that text, so a future loss could go unnoticed. This is a bounded test-confidence concern, not evidence that reads are currently broken.

Assert the screen text in content[0].

android_read returns ModelResponse.text, which model_json places in content[0].text. This test provides non-empty text but never checks that field. It would pass if the text were empty or missing while the image remained present.
