Description

useAuth0().passkey is typed as PasskeyApiClient from @auth0/auth0-spa-js. Since spa-js 2.24.0, that type includes the granular passkey methods getSignupChallenge, getLoginChallenge and getTokenWithPasskey. Auth0Provider builds the passkey object by hand and only adds signup, login and continueSignup. So code that calls a granular method type-checks, then fails at runtime:

TypeError: passkey.getTokenWithPasskey is not a function

This change adds the three methods to the provider's passkey object:

  • getSignupChallenge and getLoginChallenge pass straight through to the client. They don't change auth state.
  • getTokenWithPasskey follows the same pattern as signup, login and continueSignup. It normalizes errors with tokenError and then dispatches GET_ACCESS_TOKEN_COMPLETE, so isAuthenticated and user update after the token exchange.

The change also adds the three methods to the initialContext stubs, so they throw the usual "wrap your component in <Auth0Provider>" error outside a provider, and lists them in the passkey doc comment. The public types don't change.

Testing

New tests in __tests__/passkey.test.tsx (passkey granular flow) check that:

  • getSignupChallenge and getLoginChallenge forward options and return the challenge.
  • getTokenWithPasskey forwards options, returns tokens and updates isAuthenticated and user.
  • Errors from getTokenWithPasskey are rethrown.
  • All three methods throw outside Auth0Provider.

Without the source change, all five tests fail (... is not a function). With it, npm test passes with 100% coverage. npm run lint and the rollup build pass. Tested with Node 22 and Jest 29 (jsdom).

  • This change adds test coverage for new/changed/fixed functionality

Fixes #1302

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Passkey authentication now supports retrieving signup and login challenges for WebAuthn flows.
    • Exchange a passkey credential for access and ID tokens through the provider. Successful exchanges update the authenticated state and user information; token errors are surfaced to the caller.
  • Documentation
    • Passkey method guidance now describes challenge retrieval, credential exchange, and authentication state updates.

Walkthrough

Auth0Provider now exposes passkey challenge retrieval and token exchange methods. Token exchange converts client errors, dispatches an authentication-state update, and returns the token response on success. Tests cover the new methods and their provider requirements.

Changes: Granular passkey API

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expose passkey methods and update auth state
src/auth0-context.tsx, src/auth0-provider.tsx
The passkey API now includes signup and login challenge retrieval and token exchange. Token exchange converts client errors and dispatches GET_ACCESS_TOKEN_COMPLETE with the current user.
Mock and test the passkey methods
__mocks__/@auth0/auth0-spa-js.tsx, __tests__/passkey.test.tsx
Mocks implement the three methods. Tests check option and credential forwarding, return values, authentication state updates, error propagation, and calls outside Auth0Provider.

Explanation

Issue #1302 requires the three granular passkey methods to work through useAuth0().passkey, with getTokenWithPasskey updating authentication state and user. src/auth0-provider.tsx forwards both challenge methods to client.passkey and implements getTokenWithPasskey with tokenError handling and GET_ACCESS_TOKEN_COMPLETE dispatch. src/auth0-context.tsx adds provider-context stubs. __tests__/passkey.test.tsx covers forwarding, token results, state updates, errors, and calls outside Auth0Provider.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #1302. Provider wiring implements the requested runtime methods. Context documentation and stubs support the public API. Mock updates and tests support the new behavior. No unrelated product behavior or public type changes are introduced.

Assert publicKey in the login challenge test.

getLoginChallenge returns both authSession and publicKey. The current test checks only authSession, so a regression that drops or corrupts the WebAuthn request options can pass. Use a non-empty fixture and assert the complete challenge result.

Suggested fix
-const passkeyGetLoginChallenge = jest.fn(() => Promise.resolve({ authSession: 'login-auth-session', publicKey: {} }));
+const passkeyGetLoginChallenge = jest.fn(() => Promise.resolve({ authSession: 'login-auth-session', publicKey: { challenge: 'login-public-key-challenge' } }));
...
       expect(challenge.authSession).toBe('login-auth-session');
+      expect(challenge.publicKey).toEqual({ challenge: 'login-public-key-challenge' });

Do not let user synchronization mask the passkey error.

getTokenWithPasskey() can reject before token storage, such as for an empty verification code. If client.getUser() then fails while reading local storage, its rejection from finally replaces the original tokenError. Catch the secondary synchronization failure so the passkey error reaches the caller.

Suggested fix
