eval: gate retrieval changes by replaying saved agent queries - #531
Conversation
replay-queries.mjs runs a corpus of real codegraph_explore queries against a base and a candidate build and fails when an answer loses its source section, a rendered file or a pattern. harvest-queries.mjs collects those queries from Claude Code and Codex transcripts, keeping only queries on repositories named as public. A changed answer is read and justified in the PR; the agent A/B moves to new languages and frameworks and once per release batch.

[Medium impact] Adds evaluation infrastructure for retrieval changes. Fix the hidden answer changes and the public-repository filter before merging. Findings
Fix with agent prompt### Issue 1
scripts/agent-eval/replay-queries.mjs:27
`compareRow` labels different answers as identical when they contain the same files and character count. Reordering file sections or replacing an excerpt with equally long text meets this condition. These answers never appear in the changed-answer table, so reviewers can miss ranking and rendering changes. Compare the saved answer text, or a hash of it, separately from the loss checks.
### Issue 2
scripts/agent-eval/harvest-queries.mjs:55
`repoSlug` accepts hosts ending in `github.com`, not just GitHub. For example, `https://notgithub.com/owner/repo.git` becomes `owner/repo`. If that private origin appears in the transcripts and `--public owner/repo` is allowed, its queries pass the filter and enter the output. Parse the URL and require the exact GitHub host, with a separate anchored check for SSH's `git@github.com:...` form.
**How this was verified:** The parser returned the allowed slug for a non-GitHub origin, and that slug flows directly through the public-repository check into the exported prompts.
### Issue 3
scripts/agent-eval/harvest-queries.mjs:41-43
The code-mode parser silently skips valid JavaScript calls. A query containing `}` cannot match the outer expression, and a single-quoted query cannot match `field`. Both `codegraph_explore({query:"find } brace"})` and `codegraph_explore({query:'auth flow'})` return no calls. This drops query shapes from future checks without warning. Parse the argument object with a JavaScript parser, without executing it, and test these forms.
### Issue 4
scripts/agent-eval/harvest-queries.mjs:112
The harvest discards `maxFiles`, and the replay sends only the query text. An agent call with `maxFiles:20` therefore replays at the project's default limit instead. This leaves behavior specific to explicit file limits untested. Keep `maxFiles` in harvested tasks, include it when removing duplicates, and pass it through the probe.
### Issue 5
scripts/agent-eval/replay-queries.mjs:69
A mistyped `--ids` filter can select no queries and still produce a successful replay. `selectTasks` returns an empty list, both probes exit successfully, and this loop produces no comparisons. A developer can mistake that success for a passed check. Reject an empty selection before reporting success.
---
For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.SummaryAdds a saved-query gate for changes to existing retrieval:
The replay can hide changed answers or pass with no selected queries. The harvest also accepts lookalike GitHub hosts, skips valid code-mode calls, and drops requested file limits.

- Line 55: Update repoSlug to parse the remote URL and return a repository slug
only when its hostname is exactly github.com; reject lookalike hosts such as
privategithub.com so their queries cannot pass the allowlist filter.
- Line 41: Update the call parsing in callsInLine to handle closing braces
inside quoted query strings, rather than terminating at the first brace matched
by the current regex. Preserve harvesting of valid codegraph_explore calls,
including queries about expressions such as make({a: 1}).
Review comments at @scripts/agent-eval/replay-queries.mjs:
- Line 27: Update the changed-answer comparison so equal-length answers with
different text are detected; compare the saved answer text or its hash instead
of relying on base.chars and cand.chars. Preserve the existing regression and
gainedFiles checks.

…lic-repository filter Equal-length answers with different text now count as changed. The harvest reads code-mode calls with braces or single quotes in a string, keeps each call's maxFiles, and probe-explore passes it on. A remote counts only when its host is github.com itself. An --ids filter that selects nothing exits 2 instead of passing.

CodeRabbit skipped for the head commit: "Review rate limited" (included review limit reached). Its earlier review's findings are fixed and confirmed in thread replies; Greptile is out of trial credits. Merging on that evidence. |
A change to existing retrieval (explore ranking, budgets, rendering, search) can now be checked in about 10 seconds by replaying 46 real agent queries against the old and new build, instead of a 15–40 minute agent A/B.
The change-gating agent A/Bs run so far mostly agreed with the deterministic probes. The defects only agents caught came from query shapes the probes did not have, and replaying those agents' queries reproduced each one. This keeps the query shapes and drops the per-change agent run.
scripts/agent-eval/replay-queries.mjs <checkout> --tasks <corpus.json> --base <build> --cand <build> --out <dir>answers every query with each build throughprobe-explore.mjs(passing each query's ownmaxFiles), prints a table of answers whose text differs, and exits 1 when an answer lost its Source Code section, a file the base rendered (marked when the query names the file) or amustMatchpattern. It refuses a checkout that is not at the corpus's pinned commit.scripts/agent-eval/harvest-queries.mjs --public <owner/repo> <transcript dirs>collectscodegraph_explorequeries from Claude Code transcripts and Codex rollouts (MCP calls and code-mode calls).
