test(relay): non-sequential socket cases — commands that race the connection (#1052) - #1072
Tirthraj Chavan's work from tirthraj01/nostream@test/1052-non-sequential-socket-cases, cherry-picked with -x onto current main so the authorship and the source commit (1a63392) stay on the record. The branch is unchanged apart from the base: two files, .changeset/test-non-sequential-socket-cases.md and test/unit/adapters/web-socket-server-adapter-real.spec.ts.
What it covers
The existing real-socket suite is sequential: connect, one subscription, assert, close. These seven cases put commands in flight while the adapter is still settling:
Shape
Behaviour pinned
Reconnect storm
10 concurrent sockets, each sending a REQ on its own open tick; every client's frame arrives intact
Pipelined commands
two commands written back-to-back arrive in the order sent
REQ then CLOSE
the pair is processed and the socket stays open
EVENT on open
an EVENT sent in the same turn as open arrives
Fragmented and binary
a frame split across two writes is reassembled; a binary frame and the next command both arrive
Bad JSON mid-stream
the malformed payload and the following valid command both arrive, socket still open
They assert transport intactness through the adapter's admission path — which is what #1044 broke and what the baseline case in this file already pins — rather than adapter dispatch, which the unit suite covers separately. No arbitrary sleeps: waitFor polls a predicate, as the file already did.
Verification
npx mocha test/unit/adapters/web-socket-server-adapter-real.spec.ts on this branch: 7 passing (187 ms). CI runs the rest.
Security check
The commit was read in full before cherry-picking: a changeset and one test file, no new dependency, no workflow, network, filesystem or process call added, no hidden characters, and nothing that weakens an assertion already there. Cherry-picked from the fork rather than pushed to it, so Tirth's branch is untouched.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Expanded real WebSocket coverage for ten concurrent connections sending requests at connection open, ordered pipelined commands, immediate close requests, and events sent as connections open.
Added cases for fragmented and binary frames followed by another command, delayed admission, and recovery after malformed JSON.
Improved frame capture and assertions across individual and multiple clients.
Resolve them on the pull request, or post @coderabbitai approve as a new top-level comment to resolve them and request approval.

Walkthrough
The pull request expands real-socket WebSocket adapter tests with connection-race and frame-handling cases. It adds per-client frame capture and a changeset describing the test coverage.
Changes: Real-socket test coverage
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Frame capture and delayed-admission baseline test/unit/adapters/web-socket-server-adapter-real.spec.ts
The suite records received frames as buffers in per-client and aggregate collections. The delayed-admission test retains its frame-order assertion.
Connection races and frame handling test/unit/adapters/web-socket-server-adapter-real.spec.ts, .changeset/test-non-sequential-socket-cases.md
The suite adds cases for concurrent connections, pipelined commands, immediate REQ then CLOSE, EVENT at open, fragmented and binary frames, and malformed JSON followed by a valid command. The changeset describes these cases.
cameri/nostream#948 — The test covers immediate REQ followed by CLOSE, but does not assert that no later frames arrive.
cameri/nostream#955 — The test covers the REQ/CLOSE sequence, but does not add the silence assertion described in the issue.
Possibly related PRs
cameri/nostream#1045 — The tests exercise frame handling during admission, including the delayed-admission baseline and commands sent at socket open.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 49f02
The new tests broaden socket coverage, but timing-dependent admission and a single reconnect batch leave some races unverified. This is a bounded test-coverage risk rather than a demonstrated service regression.

Explanation
The title names the test(relay) scope and the non-sequential socket cases, which matches the changeset's real-socket tests for commands racing connection setup. It also cites issue #1052. The title is specific, but it does not name every case (reconnects, pipelining, binary frames, malformed JSON). That is acceptable because the title does not need to cover every detail. The title is 84 characters, a little long for a short title, but it is still a single readable sentence.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#1052] Scope: directly linked issue #1052. Its shapes 1-6 require client-visible outcomes: EOSE per socket (shape 1), ordered replies (2), no events after CLOSE and no error (3), OK for EVENT (4), command honoured after fragmented and binary frames (5), and NOTICE or refusal plus a usable socket after invalid JSON (6).
What the head implements: the test adapter callback at test/unit/adapters/web-socket-server-adapter-real.spec.ts returns emit: () => undefined. Each test records only frames that reach the server-side socket's 'message' listener. No test asserts EOSE, OK, NOTICE, or any relay reply. Shapes 1-6 therefore check transport delivery only. The PR description states this scope choice. It does not meet the issue's 'assert the correct outcome' requirement.
Other unmet requirements:
Shape 2 requires two REQs or an EVENT and REQ in one frame. The test (Shape 2) sends two separate client.send calls.
Shape 1 requires repeated timing-sensitive runs (issue example: 20 iterations, fail on any miss). The storm runs once, with N=10.
Acceptance requires each test to fail against the base for its named reason. The PR reports 7 passing on an earlier commit. No break-and-fail result is reported for the current head, and the requested demonstration is absent.
Acceptance requires the suite to run in the existing integration CI job. No evidence in the PR confirms this. The PR says 'CI runs the rest'.
Support for 3.x (shapes 1 and 4) is not established. The issue makes this conditional on the 3.x line being supported.
Established: the delivered frames are intact and ordered for the covered shapes, the sleeps are replaced by polling through waitFor and holdAdmission, and the adapter admission path is exercised with the rate-limit stub held pending.
Resolution
Wire the test adapter callback to a real or stub message handler that replies. Assert the client-visible outcome per shape: EOSE for each socket in shape 1, the reply order in shape 2, no EVENT after CLOSE with no error in shape 3, OK in shape 4, the honoured REQ after fragmented and binary frames in shape 5, and NOTICE or refusal with a usable socket after invalid JSON in shape 6.
Send the shape 2 commands in one WebSocket frame, for example by concatenating them in one write, or use an EVENT followed by a REQ in one frame.
Repeat the shape 1 storm and the other timing-sensitive cases in a loop (for example 20 iterations) inside one test. Fail on any missed iteration.
Run each new test against the merge base and record that it fails for the stated reason. Keep the result in the PR description.
Confirm the spec file runs in the existing integration CI job.
State whether the 3.x line is supported. If it is, add shapes 1 and 4 on that line.

Repeat the reconnect-storm case.
Shape 1 runs one batch of ten concurrent sockets. Repeat the batch enough times and check every iteration, as issue #1052 requires for timing-sensitive cases. A single batch can miss a race that occurs under a different timing.

Not fixed in this PR, and the underlying point is correct — with one distinction worth recording.
This spec tests the adapter boundary: the factory it injects is a capture adapter that records frames and emits nothing, so a case here can only prove that a command survived the socket's setup and reached the adapter in order. That is the layer #1044/#1045 broke, and it is where client.pause() and the early-message buffer live.
What you are asking for — EOSE, OK and NOTICE on the client socket, and no live subscription after a racing CLOSE — is an assertion about the app behind the socket, which this fixture does not build. It belongs in the cucumber harness (test/integration/features/), where a real app, DB and handlers answer.
You are also right that issue #1052 asks for exactly that in its acceptance: "These tests should assert the correct outcome, not merely that the server survives — a relay that drops a REQ has survived perfectly well", plus 20 iterations of shape 1. That work is not in this PR and I am not going to pretend these cases satisfy it. It needs the integration harness and is being raised with the maintainer rather than silently dropped here.
On repetition specifically: adding iterations here multiplies a frame-delivery check that still cannot see a dropped REQ, so I would rather see the 20-iteration form land in the harness where EOSE is assertable.

Test the REQ/CLOSE outcome through real dispatch.
The capture handler does not process either command. The test can pass when a dispatch race leaves a subscription active or sends an error.
Use the real adapter handler and observe client replies through a deterministic completion barrier. Assert that CLOSE leaves no active subscription, later events or errors.

@chappie-daemon You’re right about the boundary. The capture fixture checks delivery to the adapter listener; it does not exercise the EVENT handler. My suggestion to assert OK in this spec did not account for that distinction.
The client-visible outcomes and repeated storm coverage remain outstanding for #1052. The requested break-and-fail demonstration and integration CI coverage also remain unverified.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for the integration coverage, linked to #1052?

Quick fix: rebase this PR. Learn more →
Greptile's two findings are both correct, and I would hold the same line on them.
Admission races remain untested. Every new shape runs with isRateLimited resolving false immediately, so the adapter has installed its normal listener before the frames arrive. The delayed-admission path is exercised only by the pre-existing baseline case. If these tests are supposed to be about commands that race the connection, holding admission open with a controlled promise and releasing it after the sends is what makes them say that — otherwise most of them pin ordinary delivery.
Shape 1 can pass on the wrong payload. It asserts one frame per socket whose first element is REQ, so a duplicated subscription, a rewritten filter, or a frame delivered to the wrong socket would pass. Comparing the exact expected command per socket, and the set of subscription ids against the set sent, closes that.
Neither blocks on a reading of what the file already guarantees: transport intactness under concurrency is worth pinning, and the fragmented, binary, pipelined and bad-JSON cases do that whatever admission was doing.
Where that leaves it: the findings are improvements to a test-only change, and the tests as written pass and do pin something real. Merging is Cameri's call. If he wants them strengthened, the shape is his to ask for and Tirthraj's to write — this branch is his commit cherry-picked, not a rewrite of it, and I would rather not silently change what a contributor's tests assert.
@tirthraj01 — Cameri wants the tests strengthened along the two lines Greptile raised, and I agree with both. Here is the shape I would ask for, so there is no guesswork.
1. Make each shape actually race admission
Every new case today runs with isRateLimited already resolved, so the adapter has installed its normal listener before the frames arrive and the case pins ordinary delivery. The delayed-admission path is exercised only by the pre-existing baseline test, which already shows the mechanism:
letreleaseAdmission: ((limited: boolean)=>void)|undefinedisRateLimitedStub.returns(newPromise<boolean>((resolve)=>{releaseAdmission=resolve}),)// …open the socket, send the case's commands…releaseAdmission?.(false)
Apply it per shape: hold admission open, send that shape's commands while it is pending, release, then assert. Shapes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 all become races that way; Shape 5's fragmented frames are worth holding open too, because reassembly across the buffer is the interesting part.
2. Assert the exact command, not the shape of one
Shape 1 currently accepts any single frame per socket whose first element is REQ. Compare the full expected command per socket — ['REQ', sub-storm-${i}, { kinds: [1] }] — and check the multiset of subscription ids received equals the multiset sent, so a duplicated subscription, a rewritten filter or a frame delivered to the wrong socket fails.
3. Prove the tests can fail
For at least the admission shapes, show the test reddens when the behaviour is broken — drop the buffered messages in WebSocketServerAdapter (or invert the pending-admission branch) and confirm the case fails, then restore. Paste the failing assertion in the PR. A test that cannot fail is not yet evidence, and this file's whole purpose is to catch the class of bug #1044 turned out to be.

No new sleep(); keep using waitFor on a predicate.
The suite should still finish in about the same time, and everything else in the file stays as it is.
Push to your fork branch test/1052-non-sequential-socket-cases as new commits rather than rewriting 1a63392 — the branch here carries your commit cherry-picked with -x, and additional commits pick up cleanly.
Tell me when it is pushed and I will cherry-pick onto #1072 and run it here.
@tirthraj01 one more, from Cameri: do not rebase, amend or force-push this branch. Keep 1a63392 exactly where it is and add your changes as new commits on top. Our side carries your commit cherry-picked with -x, so new commits apply cleanly; a rewritten history means re-deriving the pick by hand and loses the trail back to your original commit. If you have already force-pushed at some point, say so and I will re-pick from whatever the branch holds now.
The cases all send at the open tick, but beforeEach stubs the admission check
to resolve immediately, so the adapter installs its normal listener before any
frame can arrive and the buffering path is never exercised. holdAdmission()
leaves the check pending until the frames are in the server's queue, then
admits; every case now goes through the replay path.
Shape 1 also asserted only that each socket saw some REQ. It now requires
exactly one frame per socket, the full command shape, and the multiset of
subscription ids received to equal the ids sent.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Linked Issues check:
1. Wire the test adapter callback to a real or stub message handler that
replies. Assert the client-visible outcome per shape: EOSE for each socket in
shape 1, the reply order in shape 2, no EVENT after CLOSE with no error in shape
3, OK in shape 4, the honoured REQ after fragmented and binary frames in shape
5, and NOTICE or refusal with a usable socket after invalid JSON in shape 6.
2. Send the shape 2 commands in one WebSocket frame, for example by
concatenating them in one write, or use an EVENT followed by a REQ in one frame.
3. Repeat the shape 1 storm and the other timing-sensitive cases in a loop (for
example 20 iterations) inside one test. Fail on any missed iteration.
4. Run each new test against the merge base and record that it fails for the
stated reason. Keep the result in the PR description.
5. Confirm the spec file runs in the existing integration CI job.
6. State whether the 3.x line is supported. If it is, add shapes 1 and 4 on that
line.

Closes #1052.
Tirthraj Chavan's work from
tirthraj01/nostream@test/1052-non-sequential-socket-cases, cherry-picked with-xonto currentmainso the authorship and the source commit (1a63392) stay on the record. The branch is unchanged apart from the base: two files,.changeset/test-non-sequential-socket-cases.mdandtest/unit/adapters/web-socket-server-adapter-real.spec.ts.What it covers
The existing real-socket suite is sequential: connect, one subscription, assert, close. These seven cases put commands in flight while the adapter is still settling:
opentick; every client's frame arrives intactopenarrivesThey assert transport intactness through the adapter's admission path — which is what #1044 broke and what the baseline case in this file already pins — rather than adapter dispatch, which the unit suite covers separately. No arbitrary sleeps:
waitForpolls a predicate, as the file already did.Verification
npx mocha test/unit/adapters/web-socket-server-adapter-real.spec.tson this branch: 7 passing (187 ms). CI runs the rest.Security check
