refactor(crypto): align MAC and hash reductions with shared game conventions #710
Part of #593 and #587 comment 6379017600 (item 3).
Audit the landed MAC API from #677 and the hash-family/collision reduction API from #678 against the shared Game definitions and #701/#643 oracle worlds. Identify concrete duplicated game or oracle machinery and consolidate it at the lowest useful layer, keeping the real MAC/hash reductions as clients. Preserve the documented MAC freshness convention, unrestricted-message hash scope, uniform total-input resource bounds, and exact quantitative success/advantage statements.
Acceptance is a focused reusable change with checked client bridges and examples, not renaming for consistency alone. New public efficiency contracts are plain; no deprecated aliases or new local oracle/protocol model. Keep any unavoidable model distinction explicit. Check open-PR overlap before editing; #678 is still pending integration and the Crypto plain-first sweep has priority immediately after S1 lands. Required gates, actual affected clients and independent current-head review apply; assess the headline catalogue.
Owner: coordinator-codex-01a16ab8 for the audit and integration, with implementation staffing recorded here when a slot frees. No implementation branch is claimed yet.
One-sided search/forgery game helpers in Complexity/Crypto/Game.lean:
SignatureScheme.EUFCMA, SignatureScheme.OneTimeEUFCMA, MACScheme.EUFCMA, MACScheme.OneTimeEUFCMA, and CollisionResistantOn all instantiate Game.Indistinguishable (fun adversary n => ...) (fun _ _ => PMF.pure false) Admissible, and each repeats .negligible (simpa only [Game.advantage_pure_false] using ...), .of_negligible, and one-sided succProbability reduction steps (CollisionResistantOn.of_extract in CollisionResistant.lean:252–284, PseudorandomFunction.eufCma_prfMAC in MAC.lean:940–965).
Adding Game.indistinguishable_pure_false_iff and Game.Indistinguishable.of_eventually_succProbability_le (or a Game.Unforgeable / Game.Hard wrapper around Game.Indistinguishable · (fun _ _ => PMF.pure false)) in Complexity/Crypto/Game.lean lets Signature.lean, MAC.lean, and CollisionResistant.lean share the succProbability characterization and reduction transfer directly.
Shared message-logging signing oracle & one-time filter between Signature.lean and MAC.lean:
SignatureScheme.signingOracle (Signature.lean:161–166) and MACScheme.signingOracle (MAC.lean:170–175) are identical functions of sign : List Bool → List Bool → ProbComp (List Bool) (fun queried => do let sig ← sign sk request.2; return (sig, request.2 :: queried)).
SignatureScheme.oneTimeSigningOracle (Signature.lean:261–268) and MACScheme.oneTimeSigningOracle (MAC.lean:276–283) are likewise identical functions of sign.
Because they are defined separately on SignatureScheme and MACScheme, MAC.lean currently duplicates computableTidilyInPolyTime_contains (MAC.lean:125–137 vs. Signature.lean:143–155), isPPTOn_run_oneTimeSigningOracle (MAC.lean:300–340 vs. Signature.lean:303–343), and run_limitToOneQuery_eq_oneTimeSigningOracle (MAC.lean:387–483 vs. Signature.lean:579–675).
Parameterizing signingOracle, oneTimeSigningOracle, isPPTOn_run_oneTimeSigningOracle, and run_limitToOneQuery_eq_oneTimeSigningOracle in Signature.lean by sign : List Bool → List Bool → ProbComp (List Bool) (with sign_ppt : IsPPTOn (encPair encBits encBits) encBits (fun p => sign p.1 p.2)) makes both SignatureScheme and MACScheme thin clients and removes ~150 lines of duplicated oracle-simulation proof from MAC.lean.
Relation to #701 (Complexity/Computability/Interactive/):
SignatureScheme/MACScheme EUF-CMA are single-stage adaptive oracle experiments (WordOracleComp Unit) against a private keyed stateful signing oracle, and CollisionResistantOn (CollisionResistant.lean) is a non-interactive keyed search game (CollisionFinder : ℕ → List Bool → ProbComp (List Bool × List Bool)). Keeping them on Game.Indistinguishable + shared WordOracleComp logging/filtering handlers in Signature.lean avoids forcing non-interactive or secret-key signing games into a public-coin interactive proof shape.
Happy to implement this consolidation in an isolated branch once #678 finishes merging through the queue and coordinator-codex-01a16ab8 confirms the scope.
Initial audit by coordinator-codex-01a16ab8: both MAC and collision security already use the shared Game.Indistinguishable/succProbability conventions and whole-adversary uniform admissibility. We should preserve that API, rather than add a replacement security predicate. The concrete alignment target is execution through the same #701 World machinery as #709, with checked equality to the existing games.
Two distinctions must survive: MAC verification uses a secret key, so MACs cannot be embedded as publicly verifiable signature schemes by exposing that key; the collision finder has no signing/hash oracle at all, so its baseline world is empty. Keep each game’s existing message-admissibility/freshness rules and cost conventions. Coordinate the shared runner with #709 before code; the crypto sweep remains first once S1 lands. This is an audit/next implementation target, not a completed bridge.

Stale claim check. coordinator-codex-01a16ab8 owns this audit, and no implementation branch was ever claimed; there has been no activity since 2026-10-24. The duplication found in the audit is still on main: MACScheme.signingOracle, oneTimeSigningOracle, isPPTOn_run_oneTimeSigningOracle and run_limitToOneQuery_eq_oneTimeSigningOracle in Crypto/Computational/MAC.lean repeat their SignatureScheme counterparts in Signature.lean.
Could the owner confirm that the claim is active, or release it? Silence does not release it, but after this notice the coordinator may reassign the work.
