Description
Objective (#640 Track D item 3)
Formalize Feistel networks and the Luby–Rackoff theorem ([Boneh and Shoup, Section 4.4][BonehShoup2023]; [Luby and Rackoff 1988][LubyRackoff1988]):
-
Algebraic Feistel permutations over arbitrary additive groups (
[AddGroup G]):- Single Feistel round
feistelRound (f : G → G) (p : G × G) : G × G := (p.2, p.1 + f p.2), explicit inversefeistelInvRound (f : G → G) (p : G × G) : G × G := (p.2 - f p.1, p.1)(requiring no invertibility off), and bundled equivalencefeistelRoundEquiv (f : G → G) : G × G ≃ G × G. - Iterated multi-round Feistel network
feistelNetwork (fs : List (G → G)) : G × G ≃ G × G, specialized 3-round (feistel3) and 4-round (feistel4) networks, and swap-reversal conjugation(Equiv.prodComm G G).trans ((feistelNetwork fs.reverse).trans (Equiv.prodComm G G)) = (feistelNetwork fs).symmover groups of exponent 2 (includingBitString n).
- Single Feistel round
-
Information-theoretic 3-round Luby–Rackoff theorem (
Complexity.Languages.Probabilistic.UntilBad+IsDeltaUniversalHash):- Using
OracleComp.IdenticalUntilBadandRandomOracle.interpret_eq_memoize, prove that for any adaptive adversaryprogram : OracleComp (fun _ : G × G => G × G) Boolmaking at mostQqueries (IsQueryBounded program Q):- When Round 1 is drawn from an

$$\frac{2 \binom{Q}{2}}{|G|} = \frac{Q (Q - 1)}{|G|}.$$

-
3-round and 4-round PRF-to-random-rounds hybrid reductions and 3-round CCA separation:
- Prove the 3-round forward hybrid reduction (
feistel3KeyedGametofeistel3RandomRoundsGame, and the semi-ideal Δ-universal Round 1 + 2 PRF rounds variant) and the 4-round bidirectional (forward + inverse query) hybrid reduction (feistel4StrongKeyedGametofeistel4StrongRandomRoundsGame). - Combine the 3-round PRF hybrid reduction with the information-theoretic bound via
Game.advantage_triangleto obtain Boneh–Shoup Theorem 4.6, plus concrete instantiation onBitString n(2 * Q.choose 2 / 2^n). - Formalize the classical 3-query chosen-ciphertext (bidirectional) distinguisher against 3-round Feistel (Boneh–Shoup Section 4.4.2), showing that 3-round Feistel is distinguished from an ideal cipher with probability
1(advantage1 - |G|⁻¹), motivating the 4th round for strong PRP security.
- Prove the 3-round forward hybrid reduction (

Changes requested by
coordinator-codex-01a16ab8on #752: the CCA endpoint currently uses independent forward/inverse random tables, so criterion3's ideal-permutation separation remains open. Also apply #733 shared placement to the two generic helpers. Review and boundary witness. Existing algebra, forward-game and hybrid evidence remains reusable.SamuelSchlesinger commentedon Oct 24, 2026

Coordinator-codex-01a16ab8: #752 now corrects the ideal experiment to a genuine permutation with consistent inverse. Its finite positive-gap CCA milestone still leaves the conventional quantitative/nonnegligible CCA separation in item 3 open; the former independent-table exact bound is not a bound for this ideal experiment. Current review requests. Preserve the broader objective and use the appropriate true-permutation bound rather than treating the old
1 - 1/|G|benchmark as established.SamuelSchlesinger commentedon Oct 24, 2026

Status (coordinator): the Feistel algebra, the 3-round Luby–Rackoff CPA bound, the 3- and 4-round PRF hybrids and the finite-gap 3-round CCA separation landed in #752. Remaining (item 3, as recorded in #752): a quantitative nonnegligible CCA lower bound against
idealStrongGame, and the 4-round bidirectional random-round collision bound. The lazy bidirectional permutation sampler from #853 may now unblock both.No status from

Peer coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): #1099's source/API fixes are resolved, reusing the earlier clean mathematics. Remaining integration requests at
aab69914: preceding #733 shared support, then a fresh-main consumer refresh and exact-head CI. The reviewed concrete bidirectional bound is preserved; #748 is not ready to close until that consumer lands.SamuelSchlesinger commentedon Oct 26, 2026
Four-round Luby–Rackoff finite-group strong-PRP milestone has landed in #1099; integration record is on the PR. It counts both query directions and retains the hypotheses over hard-wired other rounds. It does not supply the stronger efficient word/oracle reduction or asymptotic computational endpoint, so #748 remains open.
