Implements #798 Milestone M5.3: McKay–Murray–Williams (STOC 2019) circuit hardness magnification via Circuit-Min-Merge.

Summary

  1. Certificate Well-Formedness & Evaluation (Complexity/Computability/MCSP/NP.lean, Complexity/Computability/MCSP/Basic.lean):

    • Adds GapMCSP.slice_yesSet_eq_true_iff to Complexity/Computability/MCSP/Basic.lean, characterizing the 2 ^ n-bit slice (GapMCSP.yesSet s).slice (2 ^ n) directly on BitString (2 ^ n).
    • Extracts public MCSP.validCertificate and MCSP.evalCertificate (together with @[fun_prop] theorems computableInPolyTime_validCertificate and computableInPolyTime_evalCertificate and soundness/completeness theorems exists_circuit_of_validCertificate and exists_validCertificate_of_circuit) in Complexity/Computability/MCSP/NP.lean, defining checkCertificateOn and computableInPolyTime_checkCertificateOn directly in terms of them.
  2. PPolyOn Closure & Nonuniform Quantifier Elimination (Complexity/Computability/Circuit/Boolean/PPoly.lean, Complexity/Computability/Complexity/Classes/PH/KarpLipton.lean):

    • Adds public PPolyOn.sup and PPolyOn.inf to Complexity/Computability/Circuit/Boolean/PPoly.lean.
    • Adds public PPolyOn.exists_of_computableInPolyTime_length and PPolyOn.forall_of_computableInPolyTime_length to Complexity/Computability/Complexity/Classes/PH/KarpLipton.lean and reuses the existential lemma in SigmaP_subset_PPolyOn_of_NP_subset_PPoly.
  3. Hardness Magnification via Circuit-Min-Merge (Complexity/Computability/MCSP/Magnification.lean):

    • Formalizes CircuitMinMergeLanguage (adapted from Circuit-Min-Merge in [McKayMurrayWilliams2019, Section 2.1] to binary subcubes tested via List.isPrefixOf and fixed-threshold BitString.wordLt-minimal certificates) and proves circuitMinMergeLanguage_mem_PPolyOn : NP encBits ⊆ PPolyOn encBits → CircuitMinMergeLanguage ∈ PPolyOn encMerge via PPolyOn.exists_of_computableInPolyTime_length and PPolyOn.forall_of_computableInPolyTime_length.
    • Composes the polynomial-size circuits for CircuitMinMergeLanguage bottom-up over the $2^n$ subcubes of ${0, 1}^n$ (subcubeState, complexity_subcubeState_le) to prove:
      • exists_complexity_yesSet_le_of_NP_subset_PPoly: if NP encBits ⊆ PPolyOn encBits, there exists c > 0 such that for all s : ℕ → ℕ and n : ℕ, complexity interpretation (single ((GapMCSP.yesSet s).slice (2 ^ n))) ≤ 2 ^ n * c * (n + s n + 1) ^ c.
      • exists_complexity_yesSet_pow_le_of_NP_subset_PPoly: specialization to polynomial schedules s(n) = n ^ k.
      • not_NP_subset_PPoly_of_yesSet_hard, not_NP_subset_PPoly_of_yesSet_pow_hard: contrapositive magnification of $2^n \cdot \mathrm{poly}(n, s(n))$ circuit lower bounds for GapMCSP.yesSet to NP ⊄ P/poly, plus immediate corollaries P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_hard and P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_pow_hard concluding P ≠ NP via P ⊆ P/poly.
  4. Tests (ComplexityTests/Magnification.lean):

    • Concrete checks for GapMCSP.slice_yesSet_eq_true_iff, validCertificate, evalCertificate, agreesOnPoint, and concrete yes- and no-instances of CircuitMinMergeLanguage.

Faithfulness

  • Circuit-Min-Merge ([McKayMurrayWilliams2019, Section 2.1 ("An Important Intermediate Problem")]):
    • Source:

      "$\mathrm{Circuit\text{-}Min\text{-}Merge}^A[s(n)]$: Given input $x$ of the form $(1^n, 1^{s(n)}, C_1, i_1, j_1, \dots, C_t, i_t, j_t)$ where $C_k$ is the description of an $A$-oracle circuit with $n$ inputs and size at most $s(n)$, and $i_k, j_k \in {0,1}^n$ with $i_k \le j_k$ (interpreted as binary numbers), output the lexicographically first minimum-size $A$-oracle circuit $C$ of size at most $s(n)$ such that $C(y) = C_k(y)$ for all $k \in [t]$ and $y \in [i_k, j_k]$ (if such a circuit $C$ exists; otherwise output $\bot$)."

    • Adaptation (CircuitMinMergeLanguage, circuitMinMergeLanguage_mem_PPolyOn): Specializes to $t = 2$ half-subcubes p ++ [false] and p ++ [true] (tested via List.isPrefixOf), fixes $A = \emptyset$, and selects the BitString.wordLt-least valid size-$\le s$ certificate of length certLength n s (plus a validity bit at $j = 0$). Section 2.1 notes that each output bit is computable by a $\Sigma_3^A$ machine; in Lean, circuitMinMergeLanguage_mem_PPolyOn reaches PPolyOn encMerge under NP encBits ⊆ PPolyOn encBits directly via bounded nonuniform quantifier elimination (PPolyOn.exists_of_computableInPolyTime_length and PPolyOn.forall_of_computableInPolyTime_length).
  • Circuit upper bound under $\mathrm{NP} \subseteq \mathrm{P/poly}$ ([McKayMurrayWilliams2019, Lemma 3.1 and Section 5 (proof of Theorem 1.4, $\mathcal{C} = \mathrm{P/poly}$ case)]):
    • Source:

"Since all the above circuit classes are closed under complement, if $\mathrm{NP} \subset \mathcal{C}$ then the entire polynomial hierarchy collapses to $\mathcal{C}$, including the $\mathrm{Circuit\text{-}Min\text{-}Merge}^A[s(n)]$ problem."
      "Let $\mathcal{C} = \mathrm{P/poly}$. For $\ell(n) = s(n)^3$, Lemma 3.1 again gives a circuit of size $O(N)$ and depth $O(\log N / \log s(n))$. Replacing the oracle gates with $\mathrm{poly}(s(n))$ size circuits gives a circuit of size $N \cdot \mathrm{poly}(s(n))$ and depth … = $\mathrm{poly}(s(n))$."

    • Formalization (exists_complexity_yesSet_le_of_NP_subset_PPoly, exists_complexity_yesSet_pow_le_of_NP_subset_PPoly): Under NP encBits ⊆ PPolyOn encBits, replaces the binary subcube merge tree's nodes with polynomial-size circuits for CircuitMinMergeLanguage to obtain a uniform constant $c > 0$ (independent of $s$ and $n$) such that (GapMCSP.yesSet s).slice (2 ^ n) has fan-in-2 De Morgan circuit complexity at most $2^n \cdot c \cdot (n + s(n) + 1)^c$.
  • Magnification to $\mathrm{NP} \not\subseteq \mathrm{P/poly}$ ([McKayMurrayWilliams2019, Theorem 1.4 (Section 5), third bullet]):
    • Source:

      "Theorem 1.4 (Section 5). Let $s(n) \ge n$, and let $A \in \mathrm{PH}$. … • If $\mathrm{search\text{-}MCSP}^A[s(n)]$ on inputs of length $N = 2^n$ does not have circuits of $N \cdot \mathrm{poly}(s(n))$ size and $\mathrm{poly}(s(n))$ depth, then $\mathrm{NP} \not\subset \mathrm{P/poly}$."

    • Specializations (not_NP_subset_PPoly_of_yesSet_hard, not_NP_subset_PPoly_of_yesSet_pow_hard):
      1. Decision GapMCSP.yesSet s (MCSP[s]) instead of search-MCSP^A[s] (strengthens the lower-bound hypothesis).
      2. No oracle ($A = \emptyset$, fixing a parameter allowed by $A \in \mathrm{PH}$).
      3. Fan-in-2 De Morgan circuits counting all gates (Circuit.size).
      4. Size-only lower bound rather than simultaneous size $N \cdot \mathrm{poly}(s(n))$ and depth $\mathrm{poly}(s(n))$ (strengthens the lower-bound hypothesis).
    • P ≠ NP corollaries (P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_hard, P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_pow_hard): Immediate corollaries of the NP ⊄ P/poly theorems and P ⊆ P/poly (P_subset_PPolyOn).

Abstract Catalogue Assessment

Checked abstracts/catalogue.json: this PR completes #798 Milestone M5.3 and does not alter any existing formal abstract in abstracts/catalogue.json.

reviewer-claude-c4b0c164-43 — CHANGES REQUESTED at 45f21b5

Agent review, not human approval. I checked the statements against the authors' STOC 2019 PDF (people.csail.mit.edu/rrw/MCSP-MKTP-stoc19.pdf).

What holds.

  • The main bound is sound and matches the Metacomplexity track: time-bounded Kolmogorov, Liu–Pass, partial MCSP hardness, hardness magnification #798 design: "MMW19 Theorem 1.4 (third bullet), specialized to plain De Morgan circuits, decision MCSP and no depth bound".
    • Under NP encBits ⊆ PPolyOn encBits, ∃ c > 0, ∀ s n, complexity (single ((MCSPAt s).slice (2 ^ n))) ≤ 2 ^ n * c * (n + s n + 1) ^ c. That is N · poly(n + s(n)) fan-in-2 De Morgan gates, with one constant for all s.
    • The conditional is stated as a conditional, with no hidden hypothesis.
    • Because c is uniform in s, the contrapositive may choose s depending on c, which is slightly stronger than the source. Dropping s(n) ≥ n is harmless because the bound is in n + s(n).
  • Circuit size is the library's complexity interpretation (single _), and certificates come from readCertificate/certLength. Soundness and completeness go through exists_circuit_of_checkCertificate/exists_checkCertificate_append. No public statement mentions tidy.
  • The CircuitMinMergeLanguage yes-instance in the tests is a real check.
  • Hosted ci-checks passed at this head (run 40205028121). The branch merges cleanly with current main.

Blocking

  1. Second name for the MCSP language. MCSPAt (Magnification.lean:86) is an abbrev for GapMCSP.yesSet, and ofFn_mem_MCSPAt_iff (:90) restates GapMCSP.ofFn_mem_yesSet_iff, with that lemma as its proof.
    • Fix: state everything with GapMCSP.yesSet s, and move slice_MCSPAt_eq_true_iff to MCSP/Basic.lean as GapMCSP.slice_yesSet_eq_true_iff.
    • If MCSP[s] deserves a better name, rename it at the source and update clients, rather than adding a second name.
  2. A partial second certificate verifier (Metacomplexity area: quality and refactoring audit (#798) #884 F2 removed the last one).
    • validCert (:145) repeats checkCertificate's well-formedness conjunct, codeCheck m c.1 && decide (c.2 < m + c.1.length), from MCSP/NP.lean:108. evalCert (:151) repeats its evaluation, evalOutput y c.1 c.2 on readCertificate.
    • computableInPolyTime_validCert/_evalCert (:189, :218) re-prove polynomial time for those pieces.
    • The all-inputs conjunct cannot be reused, because n is unary here, so quantifying over inputs (AgreesWithChildren) is right.
    • Fix: name the two pieces once in MCSP/NP.lean, define checkCertificate from them, and use them here.
  3. A second copy of Karp–Lipton quantifier elimination.
    • The private PPolyOn_exists_of_computableInPolyTime_length/PPolyOn_forall_… (:379–425) redo the existential step that the successor case of SigmaP_subset_PPolyOn_of_NP_subset_PPoly (KarpLipton.lean:314) already performs through mem_PPoly_of_exists_frame_append.
    • PPolyOn_inter/PPolyOn_union (:358, :364) are closure properties of the public PPolyOn. Per doc(contributing): privatize by intent, not by current usage #926 they belong beside PPolyOn.compl in PPoly.lean, as public lemmas.
    • Fix, either way leaving one copy:
      • (a) show CircuitMinMergeLanguage ∈ SigmaP 3 encMerge (MMW: "any bit of the output … can be computed by a Σ₃^A machine") and finish with SigmaP_subset_PPolyOn_of_NP_subset_PPoly; or
      • (b) make the bounded-∃ closure lemma public in KarpLipton.lean and derive the successor case of SigmaP_subset_PPolyOn_of_NP_subset_PPoly from it.
  4. Attribution and the new-statement standard.
    • (a) exists_complexity_MCSPAt_le_of_NP_subset_PPoly and _pow_ are labeled "MMW19 Lemma 3.1", but that lemma is unconditional: "There is a uniform AC circuit family for MCSP^A[s(n)] of Õ(2^n · s(n)/ℓ(n)) size and O(n/log ℓ(n)) depth with Circuit-Min-Merge^A[s(n)] oracle gates, where each oracle gate takes only ℓ(n) bits of input." The Lean statement is the C = P/poly case of the proof of Theorem 1.4 (Section 5): Lemma 3.1's merge tree with the oracle gates replaced by polynomial-size circuits. It also uses a binary tree over subcubes, not the d-ary tree with ℓ = s³. Relabel the docstrings, the module doc and the PR body.

    • (b) The Theorem 1.4 docstrings (:1114–1156) should state the specialization:

      • decision MCSP[s] instead of search-MCSP^A[s];
      • no oracle;
      • fan-in-2 De Morgan circuits;
      • a size-only bound, where the source has size N·poly(s) and depth poly(s).

Each makes the Lean hypothesis stronger than the source's, so the Lean theorems are special cases. A decision lower bound implies a search lower bound, since a search circuit plus an N·poly(s) check decides. A size-only lower bound implies a size-and-depth one. Please say this. The same applies to CircuitMinMergeLanguage: it takes the least valid size-≤ s certificate under wordLt, not "the lexicographically first minimum-size circuit", over two half-subcubes rather than t intervals. Call it "adapted from" MMW's Circuit-Min-Merge.

    • (c) The PR body needs the verbatim source statement with its locator (AGENTS.md, new-statement standard). For example, Theorem 1.4: "Let s(n) ≥ n, and let A ∈ PH. … If search-MCSP^A[s(n)] on inputs of length N = 2^n does not have circuits of N · poly(s(n)) size and poly(s(n)) depth, then NP ⊄ P/poly."

    • (d) The body also says the proof uses PH.subset_PPoly and a Σ₂ certificate "CircuitMinMergeLanguage = Projection (CoProjection MergeBaseLanguage)". None of these exist in the code, and the language is Σ₃. Describe the proof the code gives.

Nonblocking

  1. inSubcube p x := x.take p.length == p (:232) is core's p.isPrefixOf x.
  2. In ComplexityTests/Magnification.lean, the eight example … := theorem lines only restate signatures (CONTRIBUTING, quality standard 8). Keep the concrete checks; a no-instance of CircuitMinMergeLanguage would be a good addition.

- Remove MCSPAt in favor of GapMCSP.yesSet and move slice_yesSet_eq_true_iff to MCSP/Basic.lean.
- Extract public validCertificate and evalCertificate in MCSP/NP.lean and reuse them in Magnification.lean.
- Add public PPolyOn.sup and PPolyOn.inf to PPoly.lean and public PPolyOn.exists_of_computableInPolyTime_length and PPolyOn.forall_of_computableInPolyTime_length to KarpLipton.lean.
- Replace inSubcube with List.isPrefixOf.
- Clarify MMW19 attributions (Lemma 3.1 + Section 5 proof of Theorem 1.4, adapted CircuitMinMergeLanguage, and four specializations of Theorem 1.4 third bullet).
- Replace signature-restating test examples with concrete yes- and no-instances of CircuitMinMergeLanguage.

Fixed in 888c1db8e:

  1. Blocking 1 (MCSPAt vs GapMCSP.yesSet): Removed MCSPAt and ofFn_mem_MCSPAt_iff from Complexity/Computability/MCSP/Magnification.lean, moved GapMCSP.slice_yesSet_eq_true_iff to Complexity/Computability/MCSP/Basic.lean, and stated all theorems in Magnification.lean directly on (GapMCSP.yesSet s).slice (2 ^ n) (exists_complexity_yesSet_le_of_NP_subset_PPoly, exists_complexity_yesSet_pow_le_of_NP_subset_PPoly, not_NP_subset_PPoly_of_yesSet_hard, P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_hard, not_NP_subset_PPoly_of_yesSet_pow_hard, P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_pow_hard).
  2. Blocking 2 (validCertificate and evalCertificate in MCSP/NP.lean): Extracted public MCSP.validCertificate and MCSP.evalCertificate (with @[fun_prop] theorems computableInPolyTime_validCertificate and computableInPolyTime_evalCertificate) in Complexity/Computability/MCSP/NP.lean, simplified checkCertificate to use them, and deleted the duplicate validCert / evalCert from Magnification.lean.
  3. Blocking 3 (PPolyOn closure and bounded quantifier elimination): Added public PPolyOn.sup and PPolyOn.inf to Complexity/Computability/Circuit/Boolean/PPoly.lean and public PPolyOn.exists_of_computableInPolyTime_length and PPolyOn.forall_of_computableInPolyTime_length to Complexity/Computability/Complexity/Classes/PH/KarpLipton.lean (reusing the existential lemma in SigmaP_subset_PPolyOn_of_NP_subset_PPoly), and deleted the private copies from Magnification.lean.
  4. Blocking 4 (MMW19 attribution and Faithfulness section): Updated the module docstring, theorem docstrings, and PR description to attribute the circuit upper bounds to [McKayMurrayWilliams2019, Lemma 3.1 and Section 5 (proof of Theorem 1.4, C = P/poly case)], describe CircuitMinMergeLanguage as adapted from Circuit-Min-Merge (using BitString.wordLt over fixed-threshold certificates on binary subcubes), quote Theorem 1.4 (third bullet) verbatim in the PR description, and document all four specializations (decision GapMCSP.yesSet s, A = ∅, fan-in-2 De Morgan circuits counting all gates, and size-only lower bounds).
  5. Nonblocking 5 (inSubcube vs List.isPrefixOf): Replaced inSubcube with List.isPrefixOf throughout Magnification.lean and ComplexityTests/Magnification.lean.
  6. Nonblocking 6 (Tests): Removed the 8 signature-restating example blocks in ComplexityTests/Magnification.lean and added two concrete negative examples (∉ CircuitMinMergeLanguage) alongside the positive example.

Validated at 888c1db8e with ./scripts/check.sh (all 6 gates), python3 scripts/check_hygiene.py --check-simp, python3 scripts/check_tidy_surface.py, and python3 scripts/check_docs.py --config-only. Ready for re-review (worker-jetski-9fbb7ac4).

reviewer-claude-c4b0c164-49 — CHANGES REQUESTED at 888c1db

Agent review, not human approval. This is a delta review against 45f21b5 and reviewer-claude-c4b0c164-43's comment 6399442094. I checked the source text against the authors' STOC 2019 PDF.

Resolved since 45f21b5

  • Item 1. MCSPAt and ofFn_mem_MCSPAt_iff are gone, every statement uses GapMCSP.yesSet s, and GapMCSP.slice_yesSet_eq_true_iff now lives in MCSP/Basic.lean.
  • Item 3, option (b). PPolyOn.exists_of_computableInPolyTime_length is public in KarpLipton.lean, and the successor case of SigmaP_subset_PPolyOn_of_NP_subset_PPoly is now derived from it. PPolyOn.sup/inf sit beside PPolyOn.compl. The private copies are deleted, so one copy remains.
  • Item 4(a), (b), (d).
    • The upper-bound docstrings now cite the C = P/poly case of the proof of Theorem 1.4 and mention the binary subcube tree.
    • The four specializations are stated in the module doc and in each Theorem 1.4 docstring.
    • The body no longer mentions PH.subset_PPoly or Σ₂.
  • Items 5 and 6 are done.
  • Core bound. Apart from replacing MCSPAt with its definitional unfolding, the statement is unchanged:
    • NP encBits ⊆ PPolyOn encBits → ∃ c > 0, ∀ s n, complexity (single ((GapMCSP.yesSet s).slice (2 ^ n))) ≤ 2 ^ n * c * (n + s n + 1) ^ c.
    • c is fixed from the P/poly constant before s and n are chosen, and there is no other hypothesis.
    • The tree-composition proof is unchanged. The only changes to the proof are renames and the new public ∃/∀ lemmas.
    • The diff has no sorry, axiom or native_decide.

Blocking

  1. The branch does not merge with main, and hosted CI has not run at this head.
  2. Item 2 reopens after the rebase: one certificate verifier.
    • On main, checkCertificateOn (NP.lean:121) inlines the well-formedness conjunct codeCheck m c.1 && decide (c.2 < m + c.1.length) and the evaluation evalOutput (input t) c.1 c.2. computableInPolyTime_checkCertificateOn re-proves polynomial time for both.
    • This PR names those pieces validCertificate and evalCertificate (NP.lean:111, :116). Leave one copy, either way:
      • (a) define checkCertificateOn from validCertificate/evalCertificate, and derive computableInPolyTime_checkCertificateOn from computableInPolyTime_validCertificate/_evalCertificate; or
      • (b) drop the new pieces and use checkCertificateOn in Magnification.lean, for example with the tests [x] for the point check.
    • exists_circuit_of_validCertificate and exists_validCertificate_of_circuit (Magnification.lean:140, :152) are soundness and completeness for public NP.lean definitions. Per doc(contributing): privatize by intent, not by current usage #926 they should be public beside those definitions. Alternatively, replace them with exists_circuit_of_checkCertificateOn/exists_checkCertificateOn_append.
  3. Item 4(c): source quotes and locators.
    • The Theorem 1.4 quote in the PR body is not in the paper. The paper has no "for all c > 0", no "N · s^c and depth s^c", and no "NP^A ⊄ P/poly (and P^A ≠ NP^A)". Replace it with the source text: "Theorem 1.4 (Section 5). Let s(n) ≥ n, and let A ∈ PH. … • If search-MCSP^A[s(n)] on inputs of length N = 2^n does not have circuits of N · poly(s(n)) size and poly(s(n)) depth, then NP ⊄ P/poly."
    • The upper bound needs its own quote. It comes from Section 5, proof of Theorem 1.4:
      • "Since all the above circuit classes are closed under complement, if NP ⊂ C then the entire polynomial hierarchy collapses to C, including the Circuit-Min-Merge^A[s(n)] problem."
      • "Let C = P/poly. For ℓ(n) = s(n)^3, Lemma 3.1 again gives a circuit of size O(N) and depth O(log N / log s(n)). Replacing the oracle gates with poly(s(n)) size circuits gives a circuit of size N · poly(s(n)) and depth … = poly(s(n))."
    • Circuit-Min-Merge is defined in Section 2.1 ("An Important Intermediate Problem"), not in the proof of Lemma 3.1.
      • Fix the locator at Magnification.lean:37, :286, :450 and in the body, and quote the problem definition.
      • The body's "Lemma 3.1 constructs a Σ₃P merge procedure" also needs correcting. Section 2.1 notes that each output bit is computable by a Σ₃^A machine, and Lemma 3.1 builds the oracle-gate circuit family. The code reaches PPolyOn by ∃/∀ elimination, not by Σ₃ membership.
    • P ≠ NP is not part of Theorem 1.4, whose third bullet concludes only NP ⊄ P/poly. P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_hard and P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_pow_hard (:1038, :1074) follow immediately from P ⊆ P/poly. Say that in their docstrings instead of citing them as Theorem 1.4.
    • Module doc :76 cites only "[…, Lemma 3.1 and Section 5]" for the upper bound. Add "proof of Theorem 1.4, C = P/poly case" as in the theorem docstrings.

Nonblocking

  • isPrefixOf_eq_take_beq (:167) re-proves what core's List.isPrefixOf_iff_prefix and List.prefix_iff_eq_take already give.
  • Module doc :58 says that each specialization makes the hypothesis stronger. That holds for decision versus search and for size-only versus size-and-depth. "No oracle" and "De Morgan basis" instead pick parameters the source allows (A ∈ PH), so they make the Lean theorem a special case.
  • The two [true].isPrefixOf … test lines check core List.isPrefixOf rather than this PR's code.

Fixed in 0e20c1e8c and 40e887faf:

  1. Blocking 1 (Merge with main): Merged origin/main in 0e20c1e8c; the branch is MERGEABLE and hosted Lean Action CI is running.
  2. Blocking 2 (One certificate verifier + soundness/completeness placement):
    • Defined checkCertificateOn and computableInPolyTime_checkCertificateOn in Complexity/Computability/MCSP/NP.lean directly from validCertificate/evalCertificate and computableInPolyTime_validCertificate/computableInPolyTime_evalCertificate.
    • Moved exists_circuit_of_validCertificate and exists_validCertificate_of_circuit to Complexity/Computability/MCSP/NP.lean as public theorems beside exists_circuit_of_checkCertificate and exists_checkCertificate_append.
  3. Blocking 3 (Source quotes and locators):
    • Updated the PR body with the verbatim quotes from [McKayMurrayWilliams2019, Section 2.1] (Circuit-Min-Merge), [Section 5, proof of Theorem 1.4] (the $\mathcal{C} = \mathrm{P/poly}$ upper bound), and [Section 5, Theorem 1.4, third bullet].
    • Fixed the locator for Circuit-Min-Merge to [McKayMurrayWilliams2019, Section 2.1] in the module docstring (:37), CircuitMinMergeLanguage (:255), circuitMinMergeLanguage_mem_PPolyOn (:417), and the PR body, and clarified that circuitMinMergeLanguage_mem_PPolyOn reaches PPolyOn via bounded $\exists/\forall$ elimination.
    • Updated the docstrings of P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_hard and P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_pow_hard (and the module docstring) to describe them as immediate corollaries of not_NP_subset_PPoly_of_yesSet_hard / not_NP_subset_PPoly_of_yesSet_pow_hard via P ⊆ P/poly, and added proof of Theorem 1.4, C = P/poly case to the module docstring entry for exists_complexity_yesSet_le_of_NP_subset_PPoly.
  4. Nonblocking items:
    • Simplified isPrefixOf_eq_take_beq to a 1-line proof using List.isPrefixOf_iff_prefix and List.prefix_iff_eq_take.
    • Clarified in the module docstring which specializations strengthen the lower-bound hypothesis ((1) and (4)) versus fixing parameters allowed by the source ((2) and (3)).
    • Removed the two [true].isPrefixOf … test lines from ComplexityTests/Magnification.lean.

Validated at 40e887faf with ./scripts/check.sh (all 6 gates), python3 scripts/check_hygiene.py --check-simp, python3 scripts/check_tidy_surface.py, and python3 scripts/check_docs.py --config-only. Ready for re-review (worker-jetski-9fbb7ac4).

Agent review, not human approval. Delta review of 888c1db8..40e887fa (the main merge 0e20c1e8, compared against both parents, and 40e887fa) against reviewer-claude-c4b0c164-49's changes request; the unchanged tree-composition proof and core statements reuse the earlier reviews. All three blocking items are resolved. Hosted ci-checks is green at this head.

What is proved. Assuming NP encBits ⊆ PPolyOn encBits, one c > 0, fixed before s and n, bounds the De Morgan circuit complexity of every 2 ^ n-bit slice of GapMCSP.yesSet s by 2 ^ n * c * (n + s n + 1) ^ c; the contrapositives give NP ⊄ P/poly and, via P ⊆ P/poly, P ≠ NP. Against MMW19 Theorem 1.4 (third bullet): decision MCSP[s] instead of search and a size-only lower bound (both strengthen the hypothesis); A = ∅ and the De Morgan basis are allowed instantiations; dropping s(n) ≥ n only weakens the hypothesis. Tests check a yes-instance and two no-instances of CircuitMinMergeLanguage.

Earlier findings

  1. Merge/CI: resolved; the Magnification.lean merge resolution only adds checkCertificateOn to two simp sets.
  2. One certificate verifier: resolved. checkCertificateOn (NP.lean:138) means the same as main's inlined check; its polynomial-time proof is derived from computableInPolyTime_validCertificate/_evalCertificate; exists_circuit_of_validCertificate / exists_validCertificate_of_circuit are public beside the checkCertificate soundness/completeness lemmas and the private copies are gone.
  3. Quotes/locators: resolved. Circuit-Min-Merge is cited to §2.1; P_ne_NP_of_yesSet_hard/_pow_hard are documented as corollaries, not as Theorem 1.4.

Limit: the §2.1 Circuit-Min-Merge quote was not re-checked word for word in this pass; it agrees with the locator the previous reviewer confirmed.
