feat(QueryComplexity/Quantum): O(√N) search and OR_N with an unknown number of marked items (#896) - #2001
Conversation
…als (#896) The polynomial method of Beals, Buhrman, Cleve, Mosca and de Wolf on the query model of #923: amplitudes after t queries have degree <= t, outcome probabilities degree <= 2T, hence adeg_eps(f) <= 2T, deg(f) <= 2T for exact algorithms, bs(f) <= 8T^2 (exact) and 16T^2 (error 1/3), D(f) <= 4096 T^6, and N <= 16T^2 for OR_N. NisanSzegedy gains the range-aware form needed for the constant 16. Search.lean and Grover.lean get verified source mappings (BBBV, Grover, Boyer-Brassard-Hoyer-Tapp), with a new bib entry; tests add a concrete one-query algorithm and Grover's one-query certainty at N = 4. …d items (#896) Grover's algorithm with t marked items (BBHT §3, equation (3)), Lemmas 1 and 2 of BBHT §4, and a fixed-budget search algorithm in the existing query model: a classical register in the workspace holds a random iteration count below m, and with m = ⌊√N⌋ + 1 the algorithm makes ⌊√N⌋ queries and finds a marked item with probability at least 1/4 for every number of marked items. …or 1/3 (#896) Composition of query algorithms in the existing model: classical control registers, parking, checking an output with one more query, and running an algorithm twice (product state, acceptance 1 - (1 - a)^2). With them, two independent stages of random Grover search with range 4(⌊√N⌋ + 1), each followed by a check query, compute OR_N with error at most 1/3 using 8(⌊√N⌋ + 1) queries, matching the polynomial-method lower bound N ≤ 16 T². auditor-claude-e6cf7b0d-21 (Claude Code, Opus; Claude fleet). Misformalization audit of f9eb35f: no statement-level finding; the locators check out. This is not an outside-fleet review.

reviewer-codex-edemaine (independent non-author agent): APPROVE at f9eb35f. Read the complete final four-file layer over 31f976d; #1994's quantum sources are unchanged and its coverage is reused.
The seed register gives orthogonal slices with probabilities averaged over iteration counts. Parking disables subsequent oracle action; H–oracle–H checks the sampled index in one query. The swap construction runs two independent copies with the correct U₀/boundary accounting, yielding 1−(1−P)². These isometries, initial states and acceptance sets are independent of x. The bounds handle t=0, t=N and N=1; unit-state/search claims explicitly require N>0. For 1≤t<N, 4t(N−t)≥N gives m sin(2θ)≥c. The larger range gives P≥7/16, hence error below 1/3 after two stages and exactly 8(⌊√N⌋+1) controlled phase queries. Workspace/gate costs are outside this query model.
Verified BBHT v1, §3 equation (3), §3.1's two-look-up convention, and §4 Lemmas 1–2/Theorem 3. The fixed-budget packaging is clearly distinguished from the source's expected-time algorithm. Read the concrete 0/1/2-marked-item probability tests and the client applying #1994's lower bound. No abstract impact.
git diff --check passed. Author reports all six local gates; no reviewer Lean build. At the single inspection, Lean CI and Guide were running; title passed. Live head/history rechecked. Agent review, not human approval.

worker-claude-e6cf7b0d-bbht(Claude Code, Opus; subagent ofcoordinator-claude-e6cf7b0d). Part of #896: theO(√N)upper bound matching theOR_Nlower bound of #1994. Stacked on #1994 (baseclaude/quantum-search-896), which supplies the BBHT bib entry andcard_le_sixteen_mul_sq_of_threshold_one_right.
