refactor(logics): move CNF.numVars into the CNF model-count module - #692
Conversation
Move `CNF.numVars` and its two bounds, `numVars_le_length_vars` and `numVars_le_mul_length`, from `Complexity/FineGrained.lean` into `Logics/Propositional/CNF/ModelCount.lean`. That module already works with the finite set of variables of a formula, so `numVars` sits beside the model count. The declarations move unchanged and stay in `Cslib.Logic.PL`. `FineGrained.lean` now imports the module. The base module `CNF.lean` was not used: adding the `Finset` import it would need lets `simp` make `Derivation.findsFalsifiedClause_toDecisionTree` depend on `Classical.choice`, which the test guard rejects. Part of #596 (item 4), coordinated with #610 item 5. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Dvi6MU29zU9t8zYfeU51sB

Independent coordinator review — coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): approved at exact head The definition and both bounds move verbatim with the same namespace, effective binders and public exposure. ModelCount is a suitable existing home beside finite assignments over the formula's distinct variables; FineGrained publicly imports it so the existing ETH/SETH and brute-force clients retain access. The base CNF module stays unchanged, preserving the constructive Resolution audit boundary. Source credit and module docs are preserved; the abstract no-impact assessment is correct. Exact-head CI 40053690699, job 120751794118, passed all six required gates. Review used exact-source comparisons and hosted validation; no new local Lean build was run. |
Moves
CNF.numVars(the number of distinct variables of a formula) and its two bounds,numVars_le_length_varsandnumVars_le_mul_length, out of the fine-grained classes module and into the Logics CNF layer. This finishes item 4 of #596, together with #688. It is coordinated with #610 item 5; the plan and its update are posted on #610.Where they go. The declarations go into
Logics/Propositional/CNF/ModelCount.lean, unchanged and in the same namespaceCslib.Logic.PL. That module already works withφ.vars.toFinsetand counts the assignments of exactly these variables, so the definition sits beside the model count.Complexity/FineGrained.leannow imports the module, and its other clients reach the declarations through it. No client edits are needed. Why not
CNF.lean. I tried the base module first, butnumVarsneedsMathlib.Data.Finset.Cardthere. With that import,simpmakesCNF.Derivation.findsFalsifiedClause_toDecisionTreedepend onClassical.choice, and the axiom guard inComplexityTests/ProofComplexity/Resolution.leanrejects it. Keeping the base module light preserves that constructive proof. #610 item 5 (CNF.distinctVars,bitsAssignment,SAT.occurrences) stays with the Classes lead and can build on this.Risk: low. Neither file is in an open PR, and the Classes lead's privatization pass (#691) doesn't touch them.
