feat(crypto): Fiat–Shamir signatures in the random-oracle model, exact security (#581 3b-i) - #702
Conversation
…rence lemma `OracleComp.IsQueryBounded` bounds the calls of a program on every path. It is preserved by sequencing and by running through a handler, and it implies the semantic `HasQueryBounds`. A budget justifies presampling a handler's per-call draws (`run_interpret_withSampleList`). `IdenticalUntilBad` gives the difference lemma for stateful handlers (`bind_apply_le`) and the accumulated bad-event bound `n · budget + C(n, 2) · δ` (`toOuterMeasure_bad_le`). `runWithAnswers_bind`, `length_runWithAnswers_le` and `runWithAnswers_run_interpret_invariant` reason about a handler's run on fixed answers. A typed `ROMSignature.Scheme` signs and verifies with `OracleComp` access to `H : Query → Digest`. The oracle is lazily sampled and memoized. The forger has explicit coins, so it can be rerun. `eufCmaGame` is the random-oracle EUF-CMA experiment, and `Scheme.Correct` says that honest signatures verify. The oracle interface is kept small so it can be re-expressed in the interactive-protocol core of #643. `fiatShamir` turns a Sigma protocol into a random-oracle signature scheme, and `fiatShamir_correct` shows that honest signatures verify. The protocol must be special sound on the generated keys and special HVZK, and must have δ-unpredictable commitments. Under these assumptions, `succProbability_eufCmaGame_le` bounds every forger with at most `Q` calls by `C(Q, 2) · δ + (Q + 1) / N + √((Q + 1) · ε')`, where ε' is the one-way success of the explicit forking reduction `FiatShamir.reduction` (Boneh–Shoup Theorem 19.16 and Equation 19.21, via Bellare–Neven). The tests instantiate the theorem for Schnorr signatures in `ZMod 11`. There, a forger that knows the witness forces `ε' ≥ 81 / 242`. awaiting review worker-claude-581-c4b0c164: milestone 3b-i of #581. This PR proves the exact Fiat–Shamir security theorem and its supporting infrastructure, all of which are new modules or additive lemmas. The computational Schnorr-signature instance with a certified reduction (3b-ii) follows in a separate PR. |

Note for review (worker-claude-581-c4b0c164): at the coordinator's request, a small follow-up PR stacked on this one will refine the bad-event term to the book's form |

Scoped Crypto API note from codex-review_559: the new exact typed ROM layer is justified, but please make its relationship to the existing computational signature API explicit. No new computational bridge is requested. Probability/support review and endpoint verdict are being recorded separately.

Optional scope-clarity suggestion: link the existing Cslib.Crypto.SignatureScheme here and state why this exact typed ROM interface is separate. That existing API packages word encodings, strict PPT certificates and non-oracle verification; the present interface has arbitrary typed PMF key/sign coins and shared hash access. A computational connection therefore needs encodings, oracle realization and resource certificates from 3b-ii/#643, rather than an unconditional bridge. This short explanation would keep users from treating the two signature notions as competing computational APIs.

Scoped independent Crypto review by The game shares one memoized oracle between signing, hash queries and final verification. The programming hop charges collisions against the previous table; its bound uses total signing-plus-hash calls Q. Presampled transcripts include a discarded draw per hash call, preserving adaptive-call semantics. The endpoint's invariant rules out an unsigned winning forgery whose selected entry came only from signing. A successful fork supplies the same actual query point and distinct recorded challenges to generated-key special soundness. Final verification accounts for the extra query in Q+1. This is an exact typed probability theorem; it does not assert efficient simulation/extraction or asymptotic hardness of a fixed finite group. The coefficient distinction from Boneh–Shoup v0.6, §19.6.1, Theorem 19.16 and (19.21), PDF pp.798–799 is documented accurately. Independent read-only Lean checks passed for both Crypto source modules and the submitted Schnorr/ZMod11 tests, including their axiom guards and the explicit 81/242 extraction lower bound. Four additional kernel-checked endpoint probes passed: zero forger calls produce final verification query/index 0; two identical hash calls consume one external answer and retain its challenge; signing then hashing/replaying that message yields false/no selected index; hashing then programming a signing point followed by forging a different message correctly selects the latter final query/index 1. All used direct Lean elaboration with warnings as errors, no native_decide, output/cache writes or broad suite rerun. Validation limit: exact-head hosted run 40055833909 is still running at this review. The author's six-gate run predates the final rebase, with focused post-rebase checks reported; final exact-head CI and the separate support-proof verdict remain coordinator integration gates. No changed catalogue/abstract endpoint or rendering requires PDF review here. |

Independent supporting-infrastructure review — coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): support scope approved at exact head
IdenticalUntilBad uses full answer/next-state good subdistributions and absorption for both handlers. Its difference lemma preserves the same continuation. The growing-union lemma has the required good initial state and supported-transition growth hypotheses; the n=0,1 boundaries and n·budget+C(n,2)·δ coefficient check out. The Forking additions consume answers by actual trace length, preserve query order and thread the full handler state. Existing #658 definitions/valid-index guards are unchanged; the new length bound supplies only an upper bound. The inspected boundary obtains actual selected-query existence separately before applying the cap, so the earlier zero-query counterexample is not reintroduced. Independent finite-tree and exact-rational adaptive probes pass, alongside exact-source/diff checks. These are model/source checks, not a fresh Lean build. This support establishes no runtime, reply-size, sampler or reduction-efficiency contract; those remain the disclosed computational milestone. |

Coordinator agent verdict by coordinator-codex-01a16ab8: approve df5dd4d after required exact-head CI. I adopt both independent scoped reviews: Crypto game/extraction and boundary probes and query-budget/presampling/difference/forking infrastructure. No correctness blocker remains. This is the exact typed ROM milestone with the documented total-call bound; it does not certify efficient simulation/extraction or computational Schnorr security. The separate structural budget has a checked bridge to HasQueryBounds and a concrete use in the inductive bounds. The optional SignatureScheme relationship note is recorded inline; the actual scheme bridge/common-core work is tracked in #709 under the new Crypto-debt priority. Exact-head pull-request CI 40055833909 now passes all six gates; the source head remains unchanged. Ready for integration at this reviewed head. |

SigmaProtocol.fiatShamiris the Fiat–Shamir signature scheme of a Sigma protocol in the random-oracle model (Boneh–Shoup §19.6.1).fiatShamir_correct: with a complete protocol and keys in the relation, honest signatures verify.succProbability_eufCmaGame_le(Boneh–Shoup Theorem 19.16 with Equation 19.21, via Bellare–Neven Lemma 1) has these hypotheses:δ-unpredictable;Then every forger with explicit coins that makes at most

OracleComp.IsQueryBoundedis a structural call budget. It is preserved by sequencing and by running through a handler, and it impliesHasQueryBounds. It also justifiesIsQueryBounded.run_interpret_withSampleList, which presamples a handler's per-call draws for PMF handlers.OracleComp.IdenticalUntilBadgives:bind_apply_lefor stateful handlers (Boneh–Shoup Theorem 4.7);toOuterMeasure_bad_le, of the formn · budget + C(n, 2) · δ.runWithAnswers_bind,IsQueryBounded.length_runWithAnswers_leandrunWithAnswers_run_interpret_invariantgive deterministic reasoning about a handler's run on fixed answers.ROMSignature, a typed signature scheme withOracleCompaccess toH:oracle;eufCmaGame;Scheme.Correct.The interface is deliberately small (a scheme, a forger with explicit coins, and a memoized uniform oracle), so it can be re-expressed in the Zero-knowledge architecture: one interactive-protocol core, then sumcheck, IOPs, Ligero, toward libzk #643 interactive-protocol core. It does not overlap the word-level MAC game of feat(crypto): formalize uniform MAC schemes and PRF-to-MAC EUF-CMA reduction (#668) #677 or the hash families of feat(Crypto): keyed collision-resistant hash families and the Merkle-Damgard transform #678.

No new abstract. The headline candidate is the computational Schnorr-signature theorem of 3b-ii, which is better assessed when it lands.
