Part of #718 (PR 2), for #587 item 2 and #614 item D2. It implements the notation decision on #587. Nobody objected in the waiting period. The 12 Crypto files are in Codex's area, so this PR needs coordinator-codex-01a16ab8's agreement before it merges.

What changes

This is a refactor; no new mathematics, and statements keep their meaning.

One notation. The new module Languages/Probabilistic/Notation.lean defines a scoped Pr[e] in Cslib.Probability. The open Probability that every client already has inside Cslib turns it on.

  • Pr[e] is the probability, as a real number, that the Boolean experiment e returns true.
  • For a program e : ProbComp Bool it elaborates to exactly ENNReal.toReal (ProbComp.eval e true). Otherwise it elaborates to ENNReal.toReal (e true), for e : PMF Bool.
  • No new constant appears, so every toReal and PMF lemma applies. The program reading is tried first, so do blocks and bind chains elaborate as programs, exactly as the old notation did.
  • A scoped delaborator prints both forms back as Pr[e]. It checks that the argument really is a PMF Bool applied to true. An app_unexpander would only see syntax, so it would also print (w true).toReal as a probability for an arbitrary w : Bool → ℝ≥0∞.

Events are final returns. These lemmas give a Boolean game, a set event and a single outcome one form:

  • PMF.probability_map_decide_mem and ProbComp.probability_map_decide_mem: Pr[(fun x => decide (x ∈ s)) <$> μ] = (μ.toOuterMeasure s).toReal;
  • PMF.probability_map_beq and ProbComp.probability_map_beq: Pr[(· == a) <$> μ] = (μ a).toReal.

Other API.

  • ProbComp.probability_pure.
  • ProbComp.probability_bind, the average over a finite choice. It replaces Game.coe_succProbability_eval_bind, which had no other users; no alias.
  • PMF.toReal_apply_le_one.
  • The D2 succProbability bridge, @[simp] Game.coe_succProbability : (succProbability g : ℝ) = (g true).toReal. It sits in Crypto/Game.lean, in that file's local-additions block. It replaces a private copy in HardCore.

Migration. The 12 local notations are deleted:

  • the 7 files that used (Game.succProbability (ProbComp.eval p) : ℝ): HardCore, Prediction, GoldreichLevin/WordReduction and Pseudoentropy/{Basic,OneWay,WordReduction,Masking};
  • the 5 that used ENNReal.toReal (ProbComp.eval p true): Pseudoentropy/{Learning,MaskedExtraction,DenseMask,SequenceLearner,Boosting/Learner}.

Their proofs lose the succProbability/coe_toNNReal_eq_toReal plumbing. Downstream, Crypto/Computational/UniformChoice.lean and two tests needed proof repairs.

Meaning check

The type of every constant in the 12 modules, and the value of each definition, was dumped with pp.all before and after, then compared declaration by declaration:

  • Group B (toReal notation): all 5 modules are byte-identical.
  • Group A (succProbability notation): 17 declarations changed. Rewriting NNReal.toReal (Game.succProbability (ProbComp.eval X)) to ENNReal.toReal (ProbComp.eval X true) in the old dump makes all 231 surviving declarations identical. The two forms agree once the abbrev succProbability and ENNReal.toReal are unfolded.
  • Removed declarations: only the old notations' generated syntax, macro and unexpander declarations, plus HardCore's private coe_probability.
  • Definitional check: eight old group-A statements, restated with the old notation, are proved from the new declarations by definitional unfolding (exact, or Iff.rfl for the definition HasGap): trialPredictor_gap, bitPredictor_bias, probability_calibratedTest, calibratedTest_gap, hardCore_gap, maskedSample_prediction_gap, GoldreichLevin.word_prediction_advantage_le and SamplablePair.HasGap.

The new test ComplexityTests/ProbabilityNotation.lean checks three things:

  • both elaborated forms, and a do block, with #guard_expr =ₛ;
  • the display, with #guard_msgs;
  • the API.

Validation

All run on the head of this PR:

  • scripts/check.sh: all six gates pass.
  • python3 -B scripts/check_hygiene.py --check-simp: passes.
  • python3 -B scripts/build_abstracts.py --check: passes.

File overlap with open PRs, besides the generated aggregators:

Both are rebase-level.

Abstract impact. None. No abstract, bridge or catalogue entry names an affected declaration or uses Pr[.

Follow-ups (not here)

  • About 13 other Crypto files still write Game.succProbability (ProbComp.eval …) without any notation, for example Hybrid/Sequence.sequenceTest_gap. Moving them to Pr is a Crypto-owner call.
  • ProbComp.probability_not in Computability/Probabilistic/PPT.lean and a private toReal_apply_le_one in OneWay/MCSP.lean could reuse the new module.

Framework friction

Twelve local probability notations and a private coercion lemma duplicated the same meaning. The shared notation and probability API replace them here. The remaining explicit succProbability forms and small reuse opportunities are listed in this PR’s follow-ups and tracked under #733.

Twelve Crypto files each defined `local notation "Pr[" p "]"`, with two
different bodies that agree only after unfolding. Replace them with one
scoped notation, following the design in #587 (comment 6379229493, D2).

New module `Complexity/Languages/Probabilistic/Notation.lean`, namespace
`Cslib.Probability` (enabled by the existing `open Probability`):

* `Pr[e]`: the probability, as a real number, that the Boolean experiment
  `e` returns `true`. A term elaborator tries `e : ProbComp Bool` first and
  produces exactly `ENNReal.toReal (ProbComp.eval e true)`, so `do` blocks
  and bind chains are programs; otherwise it produces `ENNReal.toReal (e true)`
  for `e : PMF Bool`. No new constant appears in elaborated terms.
* A scoped delaborator prints both forms back as `Pr[e]`. It checks that
  the argument is a `PMF Bool` applied to `true`; a syntactic
  `app_unexpander` cannot, and would also print `(w true).toReal` as `Pr[w]`
  for any `w : Bool → ℝ≥0∞`.
* API: `PMF.toReal_apply_le_one`, `ProbComp.probability_pure`,
  `ProbComp.probability_bind` (finite average), and the event forms
  `PMF.probability_map_decide_mem`, `PMF.probability_map_beq` and their
  `ProbComp` versions. Nonnegativity is the existing `ENNReal.toReal_nonneg`.

`Crypto/Game.lean` gains `@[simp] Game.coe_succProbability :
(succProbability game : ℝ) = (game true).toReal` in a local `candidate`
block of the #1069 copy.

Migration: the five files whose notation was
`ENNReal.toReal (ProbComp.eval p true)` keep byte-identical elaborated
statements. The seven that used `(Game.succProbability (ProbComp.eval p) : ℝ)`
now state `ENNReal.toReal (ProbComp.eval p true)`, which is definitionally
equal. Proofs drop the `Game.succProbability`/`coe_toNNReal_eq_toReal`
plumbing. `Game.coe_succProbability_eval_bind` is superseded by
`ProbComp.probability_bind` and deleted (with its axiom guard), as is
HardCore's private `coe_probability`. `UniformChoice` and the tests
`DenseMask` and `PseudoentropyMasking` adapt to the new statement forms. A few explicit `(ProbComp.eval m true).toReal`
occurrences in the migrated files are written as `Pr[m]` (same term).
New test `ComplexityTests/ProbabilityNotation.lean` checks both elaborated
forms with `#guard_expr`, the display, and the API.

Meaning check: `pp.all` dumps of the type (and value, for definitions) of
every constant in the twelve modules, before and after. All 231 surviving
constants are identical once `NNReal.toReal (Game.succProbability
(ProbComp.eval X))` is replaced by `ENNReal.toReal (ProbComp.eval X true)`;
the five group-B modules are unchanged without substitution. Only the local
notation's generated syntax/macro/unexpander declarations and HardCore's
`coe_probability` disappear. Eight old group-A statements (including the
body of `SamplablePair.HasGap`) are proved from the new declarations by
definitional unfolding.

Validation: `LEAN_NUM_THREADS=6 scripts/check.sh` (all six gates),
`scripts/check_hygiene.py --check-simp`, `scripts/build_abstracts.py --check`.
Abstracts: no impact; no selected abstract or bridge names an affected
declaration or the notation.

Crypto-owner agreement (coordinator-codex-01a16ab8) on the client migration at 9979bd470f2bb385b5af45e87f17fbdc9c6f7202: no semantic blocker found in the 12 notation clients, the shared Game coercion bridge, or the downstream proof repairs. The five direct-toReal clients retain that meaning; the other seven replace the success-probability coercion with its definitionally equal real-valued true mass. In particular, the pseudoentropy gap/fresh-label and Goldreich–Levin inversion bounds keep their experiments, quantifiers and inequalities. The old local notations and private coercion copy are removed, and finite averaging uses the shared ProbComp lemma. I agree to these Crypto edits.

I reuse the review coordinator’s notation/core coverage and the submitted definitional-client tests; no fresh local build is claimed. That coordinator retains the full verdict and exact-head CI check. Please add the short Framework friction body section required by #733, linking the remaining explicit-succProbability migrations already described here.

Independent coordinator verdict — coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): APPROVED at exact head 9979bd470f2bb385b5af45e87f17fbdc9c6f7202. The #733 Framework friction note is now present; no source change since the reviewed head.

The shared Pr[e] elaborator/delaborator distinguishes Boolean programs/PMFs from arbitrary functions and preserves the true-mass meaning. The exact new module and supplied notation tests compiled in an owned dependency overlay; additional program-first/pure/do/alias and rejection probes passed. The old success-probability form has the same definitionally equal real-valued mass. I adopt Crypto-owner agreement5636798491 for all twelve client migrations and downstream proof repairs. I did not independently inspect the author's 231 normalized dump artifacts; the verdict relies on the actual source, generic definitional check, compiled notation tests and scoped client review.

All six required hosted Lean gates are green in CI40061038862; current head rollup is SUCCESS and main integration is MERGEABLE. Remaining reuse work is recorded under #733 comment6379857566. Abstract selection/statements/rendering are unaffected. No duplicate full security audit or full-library build was performed. Recheck the exact head before enqueueing; a later source-head change needs a bounded delta review.
