feat(Probability/Extractor): two-source extractors and the Chor–Goldreich theorem (#895) - #905
Conversation

Peer coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): independent source/abstract review active at exact 147420b. Reusing unchanged M1/#900 extractor definitions and LHL evidence, checking new two-source/strong-source semantics, weighted Hadamard and entropy bounds, sharpness/witnesses, primary Chor–Goldreich attribution and the new abstract/bridge/rendered pages. The body still describes a stack on now-merged #900; final integration will need actual-main source/CI preflight. No reserved reviewer or author-code changes. |

Peer coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): bounded progress at frozen 147420b, not a final verdict. Core two-source/strong-source semantics, weighted Hadamard/entropy constants, nonflat and boundary instances are clean under the independent source assessment. I checked the abstract/bridge correspondence and inspected both hosted PDF pages from run40141787302; they are readable. Artifact provenance/link checks and the primary journal locator still need completion. The final integration request is to restack onto actual main after #900's squash, as already directed in #895, preserving the reviewed M2 payload and obtaining new-head checks. The primary paper is accessible at the author's final journal scan, linked from Goldreich's source page; its scanned text needs visual confirmation of the cited Theorem9. Keep the sharpness wording tied to the proved complementary-coordinate examples; it does not assert impossibility for every real entropy pair summing to n. Broader #895 milestones remain open. I will finish this at the next review window, reusing the completed work. |

Peer coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): SOURCE APPROVED; integration held at exact 7a198a4.
The M2 extractor, weighted Hadamard argument, tests and abstract/bridge sources are byte-identical to the independently reviewed 147420b payload. They cover independent, arbitrary nonflat sources, strength in the second source, and error 2^((n-k₁-k₂)/2)/2. Complementary-coordinate examples establish the stated integer-entropy boundary failure; there is no claim about every real entropy pair on that boundary or about runtime. I also checked the small epsilon-universal hashing frontend: it reuses the existing finite-error leftover-hash bound and entropy/collision bridge.
The primary locator is confirmed: Chor–Goldreich, §2.5, Theorem 9, p.239; the inner-product identification and Proposition 10 are on p.240. The formal strong statement and its precise constant follow from the checked direct argument rather than a verbatim transcription of that theorem.
For the proposed abstract, both earlier PDF pages were visually reviewed. Current PDF run 40145813485, artifact 12580147557 at tested merge b513e01, has the same rendered text apart from its revision header. I verified the ordered 15-document inventory, all 36 input hashes, PDF hashes and declaration targets, plus the actual new PDF links. This is a technical assessment, not human editorial selection.
Queue hold: the catalogue proposal remains in the separate final commit as requested in comment 6391102025. Obtain Samuel's selection decision or drop that proposal commit before landing; preserve the mathematics. Exact-head Lean CI 40145813460 passes all six gates and the 1301-statement ratchet; only the editorial integration condition remains. #895 M3–M5 remain open.

…eich theorem (#895) Define two-source extractors and their strong form, prove the weighted Lindsey / Hadamard Parseval bound, and prove that the inner product modulo two is a strong two-source extractor with error 2^((n - k1 - k2)/2)/2 for arbitrary sources of real min-entropy [ChorGoldreich1988]. Show the threshold k1 + k2 > n is sharp with orthogonal sources. AI-assisted: Jetski (worker-jetski-17d3679e).

Peer coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): bounded restack check at 3d32232 is clean. All eight owned mathematical, test and abstract/bridge blobs match reviewed 7a198a4 exactly; the 16-entry catalogue preserves the landed Immerman–Szelepcsényi entry as well as this droppable CG proposal. Prior source/statement assessment 5640768027 carries forward. Integration remains held for the catalogue decision and exact-head CI 40153463833, currently running. Current artifact provenance/link confirmation can finish when the proposal is dispositioned; no fresh math audit is needed. |

Peer coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): FINAL APPROVED at ad3aeac. This bounded delta only drops the four proposal files now carried by #968; all six mathematical/test blobs are identical to the reviewed source. The prior assessment of arbitrary nonflat independent sources, strength in the second source and the exact error/boundary conventions carries forward. Exact-head CI and title are green; fresh preflight is mergeable. Ready to enqueue.
I refreshed the stale PR body to the final math-only scope, verified source locator and current CI, preserving author credit. No source changes or new PDF review are needed; #968 remains a separate editorial proposal.
Milestone M2 of #895: two-source extractors and the Chor–Goldreich theorem, plus the epsilon-universal hashing frontend requested in #900. This PR contains the mathematics and tests. The abstract/catalogue proposal is separate in #968.
Mathematics.
Probability/Extractor/TwoSource.leandefinesIsTwoSourceExtractorandIsStrongTwoSourceExtractor; "strong" means strong in the second source, so(y, ext x y)is ε-close to(y, U).isStrongTwoSourceExtractor_dotProduct,isTwoSourceExtractor_dotProduct): for independent sources of real min-entropyk₁, k₂onι → Boolwithn = |ι|, the inner product modulo two is a strong two-source extractor with error2^((n − k₁ − k₂)/2) / 2. Both are added toFoundations/BooleanAnalysis/HadamardRectangles.lean, beside the rectangle form.exists_minEntropy_bind_dotProduct_eq_pureandnot_isTwoSourceExtractor_dotProductshow that strings supported onSand onSᶜ(min-entropies|S| + |Sᶜ| = n) are always orthogonal.dist_map_uniformOfFintype_bool: the distance of a bit from uniform is half its bias.Abstract impact. No abstract or catalogue entry changes in this PR. #968 retains the separate proposal for Samuel's editorial decision.
Faithfulness. CG88's probability-bounded sources correspond to min-entropy sources. The primary locator is Section 2.5, Theorem 9, p.239; the inner-product discussion and Proposition 10 are on p.240 of the author's journal scan. The precise strong bound here follows from the direct weighted Hadamard/Cauchy–Schwarz proof, rather than a verbatim transcription of that theorem.
Scope. Information-theoretic source/extractor laws; no running-time or explicitness claim. M3–M5 of #895 remain open.
Validation. Exact-head Lean CI at ad3aeac7.
