What

The mutation runner and its entries move into internal/guard/mutation/, and a new workflow, .github/workflows/mutation.yml, runs them.

  • Every Sunday, and by hand from the Actions tab: every entry, cut into sixteen parts that run side by side. Red when a mutation is not caught.
  • On a pull request: only the entries the change reaches - the file an entry mutates, the file its guard lives in, or the entry itself. Reported as warnings, never red for now.

A change to the runner reaches every entry, so this pull request runs all of them. That run is the first measurement of what a full pass costs on CI.

Why

A green suite says the code does what the guards check. It does not say the guards check anything - each one has to be broken on purpose to show that. The entries lived outside the repository and ran on one machine, where a full pass took over an hour, so it rarely ran. Of 1779 entries, 236 had been proven against the code as it stands today.

The coverage guard, which holds every guard to having an entry, returned early on every CI run because the list was not there. Eight guards gathered without an entry in that time.

What changed in the runner

  • The repository root and the go command are found, rather than written down as paths on one Windows machine.
  • Worker trees keep one path between runs, and each tree is built before anything is timed. A tree under a fresh name built the guard binary in 409.7 s, against 4.8 s warm, and the first entry of every worker paid that cost inside its own time ceiling.
  • An entry on a file the platform does not build (*_windows.go, cgo-only files on the Linux runner), on a file the checkout does not have, or naming a guard that does not exist on this platform comes back UNJUDGED with the reason, not as a hole in a healthy guard.
  • New options --changed BASE, --shard I/K, --plan and --json. A canary checks the selection before every plan, and report.py puts the parts together. A part that never reported counts as a failure, not as a smaller run.
  • psutil==7.2.2 (BSD-3-Clause, read from the licence file of that version) is pinned in .github/requirements-mutation.in/.txt, compiled by pip-compile the same way the semgrep requirements are. Dependabot already watches that directory.

The coverage guard

It now reads internal/guard/mutation/entries.py and fails when the file is missing. Its ten failures are closed:

  • seven new entries (manifest save, reservation release, publish, eject, the x-default alternate, a damage sentence),
  • one entry re-pointed at a renamed guard,
  • one guard taken off the probe list, because it already has an entry.

All nine were proven caught locally.

Checked

  • The cheap repository gates, parity, the site guard and the workflow guards all pass.
  • golangci-lint on internal/guard reports 0 issues.
  • semgrep p/default scanned the eight new files and found nothing.
  • The report was tried on a real result: a whole run, a missing part, and both exit modes.

Not checked yet: the workflow itself on GitHub, which is this pull request's own run.

This touches .github/workflows, so it is merged from the browser.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added automated mutation testing for pull requests, scheduled runs, and manual checks. Pull-request results appear as warnings; scheduled and manual runs can fail when checks find issues.
    • Mutation checks now focus on entries affected by changes and report missing, incomplete, or problematic results.
    • Added guidance for keeping mutation checks aligned with tests.

The mutation runner and its 1786 entries move from a local directory into
internal/guard/mutation, and a new workflow runs them: every entry each
Sunday, cut into sixteen parts that run side by side, and on a pull request
only the entries the change reaches - the file an entry mutates, the file its
guard lives in, or the entry itself. Pull requests get warnings for now, the
weekly run goes red.

What changed in the runner to make that possible:

- the root and the go command are found rather than written down as paths on
  one Windows machine
- worker trees keep one path between runs and are built before anything is
timed. A tree under a fresh name built the guard binary in 409.7 s against
4.8 s warm, and the first entry of every worker paid that inside its own
  time ceiling
- an entry on a file this platform does not build, a file the checkout does
not have, or a guard that does not exist here is UNJUDGED with the reason,
rather than a hole in a healthy guard
- --changed, --shard, --plan and --json, a canary that checks the selection
before every plan, and report.py, which treats a part that never reported
as a failure rather than as a smaller run

The coverage guard reads the tracked list and fails when it is missing. It
used to return early on every CI run, and eight guards gathered without an
entry in that time. Seven new entries and one re-pointed close them, proven
9 of 9 locally.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a mutation-testing pipeline. It selects and shards mutation entries, runs them in isolated worker trees, reports results, and adds a CI workflow for pull requests, scheduled runs, and manual dispatches.

Changes: Mutation testing pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select and validate mutation entries
internal/guard/mutation/selection.py, internal/guard/mutation/staleness.py, internal/guard/mutationcoverage_test.go
Changed paths select related mutation entries, and selected entries can be split across shards. The staleness check validates mutation patterns. The coverage test reads entries from internal/guard/mutation/entries.py and fails if it cannot read that file.
Run mutations in worker trees
internal/guard/mutation/pool.py, internal/guard/mutation/runner.py
Worker trees isolate mutation changes and track modified files. Shared runner utilities execute Go guards, enforce memory and disk limits, restore mutations, and record proofs.
Judge entries and produce reports
internal/guard/mutation/mutate.py, internal/guard/mutation/report.py
The runner warms worker trees, judges mutations, dispatches entries, and can write JSON results. The report command checks shard results and emits annotations and a Markdown summary.
Run and report mutation checks in CI
.github/workflows/mutation.yml, .github/requirements-mutation.*, CONTRIBUTING.md
The workflow plans and shards runs, then reports results. Scheduled and manual runs enable report gating; pull-request runs do not. Contributor guidance describes the check and its current non-blocking status.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

The PR adds executable mutation behavior in six Python modules, including selection, sharding, worker-tree management, mutation execution, reporting, and staleness checks. The workflow invokes these modules at .github/workflows/mutation.yml:80, 127, and 170. No Python test files or tests for these modules were added. The only test change is internal/guard/mutationcoverage_test.go, which checks guard names against entries.py; it does not test the new runner behavior. The existing test skip was changed to a failure, not weakened.

Resolution

Add committed automated tests for the new Python modules. Cover entry parsing and selection, shard calculations, worker-tree safety, mutation restoration and resource limits, report gating and missing parts, staleness results, and CLI exit codes. Keep the tests independent of the full CI workflow.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

The new runner starts a second go test process for each mutation whose first test stays green. judge() calls unjudged_reason() at internal/guard/mutation/mutate.py:263-264, while unjudged_reason() runs go test ... -v at internal/guard/mutation/runner.py:284-287. The first process already captures output at runner.py:191-231, so this adds avoidable external-process work per unjudged entry. The entries file contains 1,786 entries, including 315 guard names used by multiple entries, which also causes repeated checks.

Resolution

Include verbose test output in the initial run_test() call and detect skipped or absent guards from that result, or cache guard-status results per worker and guard name. Do not launch a second go test process from judge() for each green mutation.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

The PR adds non-atomic data-file writes. mutate.py:423-427 writes result JSON directly with Path.write_text, while report.py:37-41 calls json.loads without handling malformed input. A timeout or workflow cancellation can leave a partial result file, causing the report job to crash. runner.py:526-555 also rewrites proven.json directly, which can lose or corrupt proof data.

Resolution

Write JSON to a temporary file in the same directory, flush and fsync it, then replace the target atomically. Apply this to result reports and proven.json. Make report.load catch missing, unreadable, and invalid JSON files, record a clear run problem, and continue to produce a controlled failure or warning instead of raising. Handle a missing summary parent or write failure with an explicit diagnostic.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

report.load() reads every result-*.json under the supplied directory with unbounded path.read_text() and json.loads() (internal/guard/mutation/report.py:37-41). Malformed JSON raises JSONDecodeError; valid JSON with missing or wrong fields then raises KeyError or TypeError at lines 54-82. Large files are read fully into memory. Path.rglob() also follows matching file symlinks, so a result path can resolve outside the results directory. The workflow downloads these files and invokes this parser at .github/workflows/mutation.yml:153-170.

Resolution

Harden report.load() before parsing. Resolve the input directory, reject symlinks and any resolved path outside that directory, and enforce per-file and total-size/file-count limits before reading. Replace direct json.loads(path.read_text(...)) with bounded reads inside try/except (OSError, UnicodeError, json.JSONDecodeError, RecursionError). Validate that each decoded value is a dict with the required fields and expected types before main() indexes it; report an invalid part as a run problem instead of crashing. Reject duplicate part numbers rather than silently overwriting them.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The mutation-run partition is named inconsistently in user-facing text. The CLI and JSON use “shard” (--shard, shards=[...], r["shard"]), while the workflow job and report describe the same unit as “part” (name: part, “parts”, --shards help, and “part(s)” in the summary). This makes the plan, job logs, and report harder to follow.

Resolution

Use one term for the partition everywhere. Recommended: use “shard” in the workflow job name, CLI help, report description/help, and report summary, while retaining --shard and the JSON shard field. For example, change “only part I of K” to “only shard I of K” and “entries planned in N part(s)” to “entries planned in N shard(s)”.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

The PR introduces resource accumulation and incomplete error cleanup. runner.py:191-218 starts a psutil.Popen process with two pipes, but no finally or context manager kills and waits for the process tree when polling or reporting raises. runner.py:101-104 states that the Go build cache accumulates during the run, and the only cleanup is a printed manual go clean -cache suggestion at runner.py:507 and mutate.py:591. The workflow runs go test for many entries and enables Go caching at .github/workflows/mutation.yml:104-108, so repeated runs can grow the cache. pool.py:208-214 creates worker trees in a loop, while mutate.py:504-506 places cleanup after make_trees; a copy failure leaves partial trees without entering the finally.

Resolution

Wrap run_test in process-tree cleanup that always kills remaining descendants, calls communicate()/wait(), closes pipes, and releases the budget slot. Give mutation runs a bounded or run-scoped GOCACHE and remove it in an always-run cleanup step; do not persist mutation outputs in the shared Go cache. Make make_trees clean every created and partially created tree and its parent when any copytree call fails, and make cleanup retry or report paths that remain.

…ck, from the review of #193

- A worker whose entry raised outside the verdicts judge knows - a rebuild
that could not delete or copy, a process that did not start - died with
the exception and left the entry without a verdict. The entry is now
DAMAGED with the error, that worker stops, the others go on, and dispatch
says how many entries were never judged when every worker has stopped.
- A tree directory the sweep could not remove is refused in words naming what
is left, rather than with the traceback of a mkdir. A failure to make the
trees is written to the JSON report as a stop.
- The disk check asks about the volumes a run writes to - the temporary
directory for the worker trees and GOCACHE for the build cache - rather
than the volume of the checkout, and names the volume it refuses on.
