fix(memory): keep titles like Dr. in the sentence a memory claim is checked on - #555
memory_claim cut a reply at every period, so "I've saved that your dentist is Dr. Mehta" became "...is Dr." and a stored "Dr. Kulkarni" counted as backing it, so the reply got no correction.
memory_claim now splits with the sentence splitter in memory/origins.py, which takes a function that says when a piece continues the previous one (the default is the old abbreviation rule, so quote() is unchanged). A sentence continues after a title with its initials (Dr, Mr, Mrs, Ms, Mx, Prof: "Dr. M. Mehta"), after e.g. and i.e., after a.m. or p.m. before a lowercase word ("7 a.m. on weekdays"), and between "No." and a number ("apartment No. 12"). A name after a title is ignored when looking for hedge and earlier-save words, and only its first word is ignored for the other-place words, so "Dr. May" and "Dr. Page" stay claims while "Dr. May Notes" is still a save to notes.
What I left alone on purpose: St., No. before a capital, a.m./p.m. before a capital and single capitals still end a sentence, as they did before ("You live on Main St. I've saved that..."). Titles such as Fr. or Rev. are not covered, and "7 a.m. could you confirm?" (a lowercase word after a.m. that is a new sentence) is read as one sentence.
I compared the old and new memory_claim on about 8,400 generated replies (claims with titles, initials, numbers and clock times, with prefixes and suffixes such as questions, offers, bullets, numbered lists, ellipses and CRLF). Everything the old code found is still found, except 106 replies of the "7 a.m. could you confirm?" kind and a few contrived ones such as "Done, Dr. M. I've saved...". The other differences are claims that now keep the whole sentence. New checks fail on main and pass here: "Dr. Mehta" and "Dr. M. Mehta" are corrected when a different dentist is stored and left alone when theirs is stored; "Dr. May", "Dr. Page" and "Dr. Brian May" stay claims; "Dr. Mehta?" is a question; "apartment No. 12" and "7 a.m. on weekdays" stay whole; "Main St." and "No." before a capital do not glue the next sentence on.
pytest tests/test_memory_claims.py 32 passed; memory, outcome, source-link and loop tests (-k "origin or memory or outcome or claim or source_links or loop") 632 passed, 1 skipped

Real test
Two engines, each with its own empty SENTIENT_HOME seeded with "Maya's dentist is Dr. Kulkarni" and "Maya's physiotherapist is Dr. M. Kulkarni", driven over POST /api/chat: main (e6d599c) and this branch (b36fba1). The model's words for the false claims came from a small stand-in for Ollama's chat API, because a real model rarely writes them (the same way #553 was tested). nomic-embed-text isn't installed on my machine, so embeddings came from a stand-in too. The memory store, the stored-memory check and the correction are the real ones.

Bug Fixes
Chat now handles title abbreviations in names, such as “Dr. Mehta,” without cutting off the rest of the sentence.
Claims about saved information are more accurately distinguished from questions and claims that don’t match saved details, including cases involving abbreviations such as “No.” and “a.m.”
Improvements
Chat now provides a brief note when no information was saved.
Sentence extraction now keeps recognized abbreviations with their sentences. Memory-claim detection uses the shared extractor and filters titled names when checking claims against saved memories. Tests cover name comparisons and sentence boundaries.
A new sentences helper splits text and joins sentence parts after recognized abbreviations. quote now uses the helper.
Memory-claim filtering and regression coverage sentient/agent/outcomes.py, tests/test_memory_claims.py, changes/554.fixed.md
memory_claim uses shared sentence extraction and filters titled names before claim checks. Tests cover stored-name comparisons and sentence boundaries. The change note describes titled-name sentence handling and a note when nothing was saved.
existence-master/Sentient#551 — The change tests stored-memory comparison for titled names but does not change the memory-off behavior described in the issue.
Possibly related PRs
existence-master/Sentient#531 — That PR adds memory_claim; this change updates sentence handling and filtering in the same function.
Merge Risk: Low · up to b36fb
The change preserves common titled names, but some abbreviation boundaries and name-like keywords still produce missing or unnecessary memory corrections. These are bounded response-quality issues; merging carries low risk with explicit follow-up.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: memory claim sentence splitting now keeps titles such as "Dr." in the sentence that is checked. The raw summary confirms that the splitter in origins.py now merges pieces after title abbreviations, and that tests cover claims with Dr. The title also mentions the memory-claim scope. The objectives describe the same fix for issue #554. The title is specific and matches the changeset.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #554 (open) has two Done-when criteria: (1) "I've saved that your dentist is Dr. Mehta" keeps its whole claim and is corrected when only a different dentist is stored and nothing was saved; (2) a claim backed by stored memory is left alone.
Criterion 1: memory_claim() in sentient/agent/outcomes.py now calls origins.sentences() with _continues. _TITLE joins a piece that ends in Dr., Mr., Mrs., Ms., Mx., Prof., e.g. or i.e. to the next piece. The claim therefore stays one sentence, and the stored-memory comparison receives the full name. The comparison code is outside this diff and is unchanged. The PR report shows the correction for this case.
Criterion 2: The stored-memory comparison is unchanged. The PR report shows no correction when "Dr. Kulkarni" is stored and the claim names Dr. Kulkarni.
_TITLE_NAME and _TITLE_FIRST remove titled names before the hedge, earlier-save and other-place checks. This keeps "Dr. May" and "Dr. Page" as claims. No code path in the diff removes a hedge in the cases the issue describes.
quote() in sentient/memory/origins.py calls sentences(text) with the default callback, which tests the same _ABBREVIATION rule as before. Its behavior is unchanged.
Tests: tests/test_memory_claims.py could not be read. The repository inspection reported missing blobs. The test pass counts and the test cases come from the PR report and the change summary, not from source I read. This review does not verify them.
Scope notes (not Done-when criteria):
The issue Fix lists St., a.m. and p.m. The code does not end-glue St. The PR gives a reason ("Main St. I've saved that..."). a.m. and p.m. are joined only before a lowercase next word, and No. only before a digit. These are narrow, documented author decisions.
The PR description says a.m./p.m. and No. are left out. The code joins them in those narrow cases. The PR description says the splitter takes an abbreviation pattern argument. The code takes a continues callable. These description mismatches do not change the verdict.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed files relate to #554:
sentient/memory/origins.py: adds sentences() and Callable import. quote() now uses sentences(). The default callback keeps the previous abbreviation join rule, so quote() behavior is unchanged.
sentient/agent/outcomes.py: imports origins; adds _CLOCK, _NUMBER_SIGN, _TITLE, _TITLE_NAME, _TITLE_FIRST and _continues; memory_claim() uses the shared splitter and title-aware checks. Each addition serves the title and abbreviation splitting in #554, including the a.m./p.m. item in the Fix text.
changes/554.fixed.md: change note for #554.
tests/test_memory_claims.py: tests for the #554 cases. Not read directly (blobs missing).
No unrelated behavior change is shown in the reviewed diffs.
Non-blocking accuracy point: the change note says that when nothing was saved, Chat adds a short note. The reviewed diffs of outcomes.py and origins.py do not add that note. The correction text appears to be existing behavior. This is a wording issue in documentation, not an out-of-scope code change.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 60.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 3 files.

Keep surnames in memory claims.
When a reply says “I've saved that your dentist is Dr. May,” the suffix loop removes May as a hedge. A stored Dr. Kulkarni fact can then back the truncated claim, so the false save assertion receives no correction. Preserve names after titles when checking for hedges.

memory_claim cut a reply at every period, so "I've saved that your dentist is Dr. Mehta" became "...is Dr." and a stored Dr. Kulkarni backed it. It now splits with a narrow list of titles (Dr, Mr, Mrs, Ms, Mx, Prof, e.g, i.e) that never end a sentence, and ignores a name after a title when it looks for hedge, earlier-save and other-place words.

Keep separate claim sentences separate after abbreviations.
When a reply says “You could ask Mr. Smith, e.g. I've saved that you like tea,” the splitter joins both sentences. The earlier could then suppresses the save claim, so an unsupported claim receives no correction. Preserve sentence boundaries here while retaining title-name handling.

Update _continues so sentence-ending “e.g.” and “i.e.” do not cause the
following claim to be joined to the previous sentence. Preserve continuation
handling for titles and the existing title-name behavior in _TITLE_NAME and
_TITLE_FIRST.

Preserve hedge words after title names.
_TITLE_NAME can remove a capitalized hedge after a name. For example, “Dr. Smith Might be someone I'll remember after you confirm.” is treated as a save claim. If no save succeeds and no memory backs it, Sentient appends an unnecessary correction. Distinguish names from following hedge words.

Update the hedge detection around `_TITLE_NAME.sub` so removing a title and name
does not also discard a following hedge word, such as “Might.” Preserve
detection of the remaining sentence by `_MEMORY_HEDGE.search`, and keep the
existing save-claim behavior unchanged when no hedge is present.

When the reply says “I've saved that your dentist is Dr. Brian Page.”, the filter treats Page as a destination and skips the claim. If no memory was saved or already backs it, the user receives no correction. Distinguish surnames from actual save destinations.

Update the other-place check using _MEMORY_OTHER_PLACE and _TITLE_FIRST so it
does not classify a person’s surname, such as “Page” in “Dr. Brian Page,” as a
save destination. Preserve filtering for replies that name actual destinations,
while allowing the claim to proceed to the existing correction behavior when no
memory was saved or already backs it.

Keep sentence-final abbreviations from joining quotes.
When a source sentence ends in St., etc., or a single capital, quote() can include the next sentence in the stored reference. Distinguish sentence-final uses from abbreviations inside a sentence while preserving names such as Dr. Mehta.

Review comment at @sentient/memory/origins.py around lines 171 - 184:
Update _after_abbreviation and its use by sentences so sentence-final forms such
as “St.”, “etc.”, and a single capital do not merge the next sentence into a
quote, while abbreviations followed by a name, such as “Dr. Mehta,” remain
joined. Distinguish these cases using the surrounding sentence context rather
than treating every _ABBREVIATION match as continuation.

What and why
memory_claimcut a reply at every period, so "I've saved that your dentist is Dr. Mehta" became "...is Dr." and a stored "Dr. Kulkarni" counted as backing it, so the reply got no correction.memory_claimnow splits with the sentence splitter inmemory/origins.py, which takes a function that says when a piece continues the previous one (the default is the old abbreviation rule, soquote()is unchanged). What I left alone on purpose:
St.,No.before a capital, a.m./p.m. before a capital and single capitals still end a sentence, as they did before ("You live on Main St. I've saved that..."). Titles such as Fr. or Rev. are not covered, and "7 a.m. could you confirm?" (a lowercase word after a.m. that is a new sentence) is read as one sentence.Closes #554
How I tested it
I compared the old and new
memory_claimon about 8,400 generated replies (claims with titles, initials, numbers and clock times, with prefixes and suffixes such as questions, offers, bullets, numbered lists, ellipses and CRLF). 12" and "7 a.m. on weekdays" stay whole; "Main St." and "No." before a capital do not glue the next sentence on.pytest tests/test_memory_claims.py32 passed; memory, outcome, source-link and loop tests (-k "origin or memory or outcome or claim or source_links or loop") 632 passed, 1 skippedruff check sentient testscleanReal test
Two engines, each with its own empty
SENTIENT_HOMEseeded with "Maya's dentist is Dr. Kulkarni" and "Maya's physiotherapist is Dr. M. Kulkarni", driven overPOST /api/chat:main(e6d599c) and this branch (b36fba1). The model's words for the false claims came from a small stand-in for Ollama's chat API, because a real model rarely writes them (the same way #553 was tested).nomic-embed-textisn't installed on my machine, so embeddings came from a stand-in too. The memory store, the stored-memory check and the correction are the real ones.mainI also ran chats on
ollama_chat/llama3.1:8bwith no stand-in for the chat model (thinking off, since that model rejects it). It called its memory tool on every turn, so there was no false claim to catch, and both builds behaved the same. Not tested: the Claude Code backend and the desktop app (nothing there changed).
