Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Changes
    • Trie serialization now stores data using the host system’s native byte order and memory layout. Serialized trie data may therefore differ between platforms and may not be interchangeable across systems with different byte orders or application binary interfaces. Stream read and write operations continue to check for I/O failures. Public APIs are unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

DATrie persistence now reads and writes trie data as raw host-native memory. Tail-value operations use native load and store helpers. The serialization documentation describes the host byte order and ABI, and a test checks serialization size and round-trip values.

Changes

DATrie Native Representation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native-memory serialization
src/libime/core/datrie.cpp, src/libime/core/datrie.h, src/libime/core/utils_p.h, test/testtrie.cpp
DATrie::open and DATrie::save read and write trie data as raw native-memory data. The serialization documentation now specifies host byte order and ABI. The new test checks serialized size and verifies three values after loading.
Native tail-value access
src/libime/core/datrie.cpp
Trie updates, tail compaction, traversal, and lookup now use loadNative and storeNative to access tail values.

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 25f19

Trie files saved by earlier releases may fail to load after this change, and loading them may attempt very large memory allocations. Unless the format break is intended and a migration is provided, add a version or format check or a legacy reader before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 25f19

Previously saved tries may not load correctly after this change, particularly on little-endian hosts. A misread file can request unexpectedly large allocations before loading fails. The new round-trip test confirms same-build behavior, but not compatibility with existing files.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: An unversioned switch to native bytes can cause previously valid trie files to be read with incorrect sizes and layout. On little-endian hosts, loading such a file may allocate substantially more memory before an I/O failure, impairing availability during upgrade or mixed-version use.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is trie data supplied to the prediction utility by file or stdin and to the public library loader. The available evidence does not establish all downstream callers or a network-facing route.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — On little-endian hosts, a legacy big-endian header can be interpreted as a much larger native length or node count. Resizing occurs before the payload read can fail, creating an availability path when a consumer loads a formerly valid file.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Stream-failure checks and the utility’s exception handler remain controls for failed reads. The inspected DATrie loader does not validate header bounds or internal indices before installing raw payload bytes; those validation limitations also existed in the base reader.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Public load clears the trie before opening it, but open mutates arrays before all reads complete. A later load can clear and retry; neither the old nor new sequence provides a transactional snapshot after a failed load.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If existing files must remain usable, distinguish format versions and provide an explicit legacy conversion path. Bound lengths and validate trie structure before exposing loaded data.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Preserve loading of existing serialized tries.

If open receives a trie saved by an older release on a little-endian host, these reads interpret its big-endian length and node count as native values. For example, an old node count of 256 becomes 65,536. open then allocates storage using the wrong sizes and fails to load the file; larger lengths can cause much larger allocations. The new round-trip test cannot detect this because it writes and reads only the new format. Add a format discriminator and a legacy reader, or provide a migration path that does not require the new reader to load the old file. The prediction tool’s -d path is one existing-file consumer. No, this is not the correct way to do it. You need to consider backward compatibility.
