feat(http): pool transports, add timings - #349
Conversation
…ector Clients that carry a Clicky timing collector in their context now report request, body and connection timings, so Server-Timing output reflects outbound HTTP cost. The http metric ends at response headers and counts requests, transport errors and status codes of 400 or higher. http_body covers reads through EOF, read error or close, and counts bytes consumed without buffering the stream. Connection phases (DNS, connect, TLS, connection reuse, first byte, wire write) are observed through httptrace, so existing trace hooks and transports are preserved. WithClientTimings lets libraries that own their transport, such as go-git, contribute the same phase timings without replacing it. Without a collector in the context, behavior and response bodies are unchanged. Metric names are fixed; URLs, headers, credentials and connection addresses are not emitted.
Share immutable http.Transport instances across clients through a bounded LRU pool keyed by endpoint, TLS, proxy, and security namespace, so connections are reused instead of rebuilt for every client. Host header overrides now clone the transport and set SNI on the clone instead of mutating the shared TLS config, which could leak ServerName into other clients using the same transport. Add BufferBody to read response bodies into memory (16MB default cap) so they can be decoded more than once; streaming bodies still return ErrBodyConsumed on a second read. BREAKING CHANGE: a Host header override no longer sets ServerName on the client's TLS config. Callers that relied on that side effect must set TLS ServerName explicitly.
…ponse bodies Reading an unbuffered body twice silently returned an empty string, which dropped error payloads such as OIPA 500 messages. Reads now track consumption and return ErrBodyConsumed. Client.BufferBody opts in to multiple reads, with a size limit where 0 selects the 16MB default. BREAKING CHANGE: a second read of an unbuffered response body now returns ErrBodyConsumed instead of an empty body, and AsMap returns that error instead of ignoring it.
WalkthroughThis PR adds response-body buffering and consumed-body errors, HTTP request and transport-phase timing, and an LRU pool for HTTP transports. It also updates Go module requirements and adds tests and documentation for these changes. ChangesHTTP client behavior

Limit the Host-override transport clone to https requests.
The condition checks c.tlsConfig != nil and req.Host != req.URL.Host. It does not check the URL scheme.
A client with TLS configured can send a plain http request with a Host header, such as virtual-host routing or the cacheDNS path. That request now gets a cloned, single-use transport. It gains no SNI benefit and loses connection reuse.

Disable keep-alives for Host-override transports.
The HTTP/1 path closes the connection after CloseIdleConnections runs. However, the HTTP/2 path does not. When the deferred cleanup runs while an HTTP/2 stream is active, closeIfIdle leaves the connection open. The connection can then remain alive after the body finishes until the configured idle timeout, or indefinitely when that timeout is zero.
Set DisableKeepAlives on the clone. Keep the deferred CloseIdleConnections call for connections that are already idle when roundTrip returns.

Avoid installing duplicate timing traces for the same timing collector.
ServerTiming calls WithClientTimings for every instrumented request. If the caller already applied WithClientTimings, both traces run because httptrace.WithClientTrace composes existing hooks. Each trace records http_conn, so connection metrics and other phase metrics are duplicated.
Mark the context with the active timing collector and return it unchanged only when that same collector is already traced. Do not use an unscoped marker, because a derived context may carry a different collector.
