The robot only took commands. A button on the Extension port could not drive host-side automation until the device could push events out. This PR adds that outbound path, a configurable push-button extension (edges + gestures + optional local SFX), CLI watch, and the PCB Extension port work that backs it.

Summary

  • Outbound event hub — Producers publish one JSON envelope (v, type, source, ms). Hub broadcasts on ws://<host>:81/events while HTTP is up, and sends the same JSON as a serial Evt frame. REST stays inbound. Full CDC buffer drops the serial copy and does not block the robot. Access token (when set) gates the WebSocket via token query; rotating the token disconnects subscribers.
  • Push-button extension (off by default) — Extensions page toggles push_button / push_button_pin via POST /settings (no reboot). Pin allowlist GP6 / GP7 / GP20 / GP21 on the Extension port (not J4 in UI/docs). Active-low, internal pull-up. Publishes button.down / button.up, plus gestures button.click (350 ms after short release), button.double_click, button.long_click (800 ms hold). Edge queue (depth 8) retains clicks during POST /play. Pin-claim check rejects two enabled extensions on the same GPIO.
  • Per-event sounds — Settings push_button_sound_{down,up,click,double_click,long_click} = none | bell | click (default all none). On publish, plays /bell.wav or /click.wav when the speaker is free; busy speaker skips SFX, event still goes out. Extensions Events table maps each emitted event to a sound.
  • tiny-engineer watch — http (default) reads the WebSocket; serial prints Evt frames and does not need a robot URL.
  • Hardware — Extension port on the main control board (silkscreen, BOM, expected nets, docs/pinout).
  • 3D button model — Prepare a printable Extension-port momentary button (CAD + exported 3mf under stock 3d_models/ or a named mods/<name>/; CERN-OHL-S).
  • Assembly instructions — Document how to print, fit, and wire the button on the Extension port (steps + visuals in docs/3d/assembly.md or a linked extension/mod guide).

Test plan

  • Fresh boot / factory reset: push_button: false, all five push_button_sound_* = none; contact publishes nothing
  • Extensions: enable without reboot; Config has no push-button control; draft off hides pin + Events table
  • Pin: save GP7 while off persists; invalid pin → 400; change pin while on rebinds without reboot
  • Press/release: WS + serial get button.down then button.up (source push-button)
  • Short press → delayed button.click; double → button.double_click only; hold ≥800 ms → button.long_click then button.up
  • Enable while held: no event until next press; disable while held: no synthetic up
  • Click during POST /play: both edges arrive in order after loop can publish (if still in queue)
  • Sound: map click → Bell, speaker idle → plays; busy (/play or WAV) → event only, no interrupt; none → silent
  • After firmware upgrade: uploadfs so /click.wav is on LittleFS
  • Access token: WS handshake fails without matching token; serial Evt needs no Bearer
  • USB-only: port 81 closed; serial watch still prints events
  • tiny-engineer watch one JSON line per event; --transport serial no WebSocket / no TINY_ENGINEER_URL
  • pio run, pio test -e native, npm test --prefix packages/tiny-engineer-cli, npm run lint --prefix ui, npm test --prefix ui
  • 3D: source CAD + exported printables committed; part seats on Extension port / button footprint as documented
  • Assembly docs: steps cover print → mount → wire chosen GP to GND; buildable from the guide alone

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional push-button extension, disabled by default, with an Extensions page toggle that takes effect immediately.
    • Button presses and releases can now be watched as events over WebSocket or serial using the CLI’s watch command.
    • Added an outbound event stream for connected clients, with optional access-token protection and no replay of past events.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the push-button setting, hardware connection, and event streaming options, including CLI transport behavior.

Walkthrough

The change adds a default-off GPIO20 push-button extension and outbound event delivery over WebSocket and serial. It adds settings API and UI support, a CLI watch command, and documentation and OpenSpec updates.

Changes: Outbound Events and Push-Button

Layer / File(s) Summary
Feature contracts and supporting documentation
openspec/changes/push-button-extension/*, docs/api.md, docs/settings.md, docs/hardware/pinout.md, docs/hardware/testing.md
The OpenSpec change describes event transport, push-button behavior, CLI watch behavior, and implementation tasks. Documentation covers the setting, event transports, and GPIO20 wiring. The /settings GET documentation row remains unchanged.
Firmware event delivery
src/events/*, src/serial/link.*, src/http/server.cpp, platformio.ini
The firmware adds the WebSocket event hub and best-effort serial Evt frames. The hub runs with the HTTP server and broadcasts versioned JSON events. The ESP32-C3 build adds the WebSockets library and a four-client limit.
Push-button logic and settings
src/extensions/push_button*, src/settings/*, src/api/commands.cpp, src/http/settings_handlers.cpp, src/http/play_handlers.cpp, src/main.cpp, include/pins.h, test/test_push_button_logic/*
The setting defaults off and persists in NVS. Enabled GPIO20 input samples are queued and debounced. Accepted press and release transitions publish events. Firmware setup, settings updates, factory reset, and play handling apply or poll the button.
Extensions page and settings route
ui/src/App.tsx, ui/src/api/types.ts, ui/src/components/Nav.tsx, ui/src/views/Extensions.tsx, ui/src/views/ApiReference.tsx, ui/test/robot.tsx, src/http/routes.cpp
The UI adds an Extensions page with a push-button toggle and includes the setting in its type, navigation, API reference, and test defaults. The firmware adds a public GET /extensions route.
CLI event monitoring
packages/tiny-engineer-cli/package.json, packages/tiny-engineer-cli/src/cli.js, packages/tiny-engineer-cli/src/commands/watch.js, packages/tiny-engineer-cli/src/robot/serial/client.js, packages/tiny-engineer-cli/test/watch.test.js
The CLI adds watch for WebSocket or serial events. It validates URLs, masks token values in displayed URLs, and prints serial event payloads.

* Updated API documentation to clarify that setting or rotating a non-empty access token will disconnect current WebSocket subscribers, requiring them to reconnect with the new token.
* Implemented a new function to disconnect all WebSocket clients upon access token rotation.
* Modified settings handler to invoke the disconnection function when the access token is changed.

src/events/hub.cpp:50-60
🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Percent-decode the token query value in tokenOk before comparing it.

The CLI builds the watch URL with ws.searchParams.set("token", token). This encodes reserved characters in the token. For example, % becomes %25, & becomes %26, + becomes %2B, and = becomes %3D. tokenOk compares the raw query bytes with the configured token and does not decode them. A configured token that contains any of these characters therefore never matches. The authenticated /events connection is then disconnected.

Decoding the token value in tokenOk makes the firmware match the encoded URL. The CLI encoding stays unchanged.

Suggested fix

Percent-decode the value in tokenOk before the memcmp. Decode into a fixed buffer sized to the 64-character token limit, and reject values that exceed it.
