--hires support for MiniMax-H3 in vid_gen, i.e. the low-res draft → latent upscale → high-res refine workflow that ComfyUI H3 graphs use by hand. Reuses the existing image hires infrastructure (sd_hires_params_t, make_hires_sigma_schedule, the second sample() call), so the second stage is a normal img2img-style pass driven by --hires-steps / --hires-denoising-strength / --hires-sigmas.
The packed AV latent is resampled in latent space (nearest / bilinear / bicubic / antialiased). New video-side dispatch: the LTX path still requires MODEL, so Latent* previously errored out.
The time axis is never resampled, so the packed audio latent length stays valid across the stage change: the audio latent is unpacked around the upscale (and around the learned network), re-packed for the new spatial size, and audio_length is passed unchanged to the refine pass and to the final audio decode. There is no LTX-style audio-length recompute because the frame count is unchanged.
Files
src/pipeline/video.cpp — hires gating & dispatch for H3, H3-aware audio unpack/repack across the spatial upscale, per-channel (24ch) normalize/denormalize around the learned upscaler.
src/model/upscaler/h3_latent_upscaler.hpp (new) — H3LatentUpscalerRunner: auto-detects channel counts, block layout, temporal kernel and embed_dim from the checkpoint; two-stage graph split with a host-side spatial resample between the graphs and per-block graph cuts. Built only on existing building blocks (GGMLRunner / GGMLBlock, Conv3d, Linear, LTXVUpsampler::VideoGroupNorm, sd::ops::interpolate/slice, ModelManager, mark_graph_cut); no private ggml symbols.
Symbol audit against 77b72a2: every API the patch calls exists (SD_HIRES_UPSCALER_LATENT*, ensure_backend_pair, max_graph_vram_bytes_for_module, params_backend_for, new_graph_custom / make_input / get_context, mark_graph_cut).
LTX invariance: the LTX path keeps its existing checks verbatim; the only LTX-visible deltas are log-string wording changes and a sd_version_is_ltxav guard on the existing target-size WARN.
API arity audit against pinned ggml (643e8d9): every ggml_* call in the touched files was machine-checked against its declared parameter count.
Cross-checked against the reference PyTorch node (LBH-123-AI/Minimax_h3_latent_Upscaler): the 24 per-channel mean/std constants match value for value, GroupNorm(32, C) eps matches the library default, the time axis is never re-sampled (target_size=(t, h_out, w_out)), and the conditioning semantics were aligned with it (non-in-place SiLU on the shared embedding, no trailing activation on embed, 1× target short-circuits instead of going through the network).
Built and run end to end (updated after the first review round). A CPU-only build with MinGW g++ 16.2.0 now compiles clean and both paths were executed against the released bf16 upscaler checkpoint (minimax_h3_latent_upscaler_3d_conv_v1_bf16.safetensors, 659 MB) with minimax_h3_fl2va-Q4_K_M:
--hires-upscaler "Latent (bicubic)": latent 16x16x7x24 → 32x32x7x24, decoded 512x512x22x3 with an audio track, exit code 0.
--hires-upscaler h3-latent-upscaler-3d: same stage change through the learned network, temporal_kernel = 5, all 322 checkpoint tensors bound, upscale 13.7 s and refine 48.2 s on CPU, decoded 512x512x22x3 with audio, exit code 0.
In both runs the spatial size doubles while T stays at 7, and the soundtrack survives the stage change.
Building and running found three defects that the static audit had missed, all fixed in the branch: the three init_params overrides took the prefix by const reference instead of by value (so the translation unit did not compile), the temporal depthwise conv was built as a dense Conv3d and could never bind the [C, 1, k, 1, 1] checkpoint kernel, and the kernel length was probed from ne[0] (the spatial extent, 1) instead of ne[2].
A full shape cross-check of all 322 checkpoint tensors against what the code allocates: 322 matched, 0 mismatched.
Still unverified: the ROCm/HIP backend (no MSVC toolchain on this machine, and the ROCm clang is MSVC-ABI only). Note that a user reported a segfault on a ROCm build with the earlier revision of this branch; see the discussion for the diagnosis.
Known gaps / test matrix
Not yet covered, and I'd like review input on whether they should be part of this PR or a follow-up:
--init-img / --end-img keyframes are rejected with a clear error: first-pass keyframe latents are encoded at the draft resolution and would need re-encoding for the hires canvas.
--ref-image (Ref2VA) is not gated — ref latents are conditioning embeddings and should be resolution-independent, but this is unverified end to end.
The learned upscaler on audio jobs runs the length-preservation path but has no end-to-end run yet.
The refine pass runs at the larger latent, so it is the memory-hungry half; the learned upscaler additionally costs a UPSCALER backend module (~100s of MB at fp16). On small cards this wants quantization + --vae-tiling + --offload-to-cpu.
No temporal chunking. The reference node splits the clip along the time axis above T=32 and blends overlapping chunks to cap peak VRAM; this implementation feeds the whole clip through the learned upscaler in one graph. Numerically identical for T ≤ 32, but long clips cost noticeably more VRAM than the reference node.
H3ResBlock only implements the identity skip. The reference architecture falls back to a Conv3d(1×1) skip when in/out channels differ; only the equal-channel case is handled here, so a checkpoint whose residual blocks widen the channel count would not bind.
Added latent hires upscaling for MiniMax-H3 video generation, with interpolation-based and learned options. Frame count and packed audio are preserved.
Learned upscaling supports 1.2×–2.0× scaling. Target dimensions must be multiples of 32; hires upscaling is unavailable with --init-img or --end-img.
Explicit --hires-sigmas can be used instead of denoising strength.
Adds --hires support for MiniMax-H3 vid_gen, i.e. the draft -> latent
upscale -> refine workflow: the first pass runs at the draft resolution,
the packed AV latent is then upscaled in latent space (interpolating or
model-backed learned upscaler), and a second img2img-style sampling pass
runs at the target resolution using the existing hires sigma schedule.
The time axis is never resampled, so the packed audio latent length stays
valid across the stage change and the soundtrack is preserved.
Refs leejet#2204
sd::Tensor stores shape[0] as the fastest-varying dimension, so the channel
axis (shape[3]) is a contiguous run of numel()/channels values, not an
interleaved i % channels stride. The previous per-element loop therefore
applied mismatched mean/std to every element instead of per channel.
Fold both directions into one per-channel affine helper and iterate channel
blocks explicitly.

Explanation
The title "feat: MiniMax-H3 latent hires second pass" names the main change. The PR adds --hires support for MiniMax-H3 video generation, with interpolating and learned latent upscalers used in a second sampling pass. The title is specific, concise, and matches the changeset (src/pipeline/video.cpp, the new h3_latent_upscaler.hpp, and docs/minimax_h3.md). It does not cover audio preservation or the learned upscaler, but that is expected.

Explanation
Issue #2204 requires MiniMax-H3 --hires support with interpolation and a learned H3-shaped 3D upscaler. src/pipeline/video.cpp adds both paths, preserves the time axis, preserves audio_length, and rejects H3 keyframe hires. src/model/upscaler/h3_latent_upscaler.hpp detects checkpoint structure and performs spatial-only upscaling. The refine pass uses the existing hires flow. The LTX path remains separately gated. The issue lists Ref2VA hires and learned audio runs as untested combinations, not coding acceptance criteria. No required automated test is specified, and no unmet coding requirement is established.

Addresses the review findings:
- ggml_reshape_1d needs the output length; pass 2 * channels explicitly.
- ggml_cgraph has no ctx member in the pinned ggml, so drop ggml_new_tensor_1d
on gf->ctx and bind the scale-1 embedding through make_input like the latent
inputs. This also removes ggml_set_f32_1d, which takes no context argument.
- Build 1 + scale with ggml_scale_bias instead of a host-filled constant tensor.
- Register the H3Embed children as "0"/"2": GGMLBlock prefixes child names, so
"embed.0" nested under blocks["embed"] resolved to embed.embed.0.* and never
matched the checkpoint's embed.0.* weights.
The corrected embed.2 binding reaches this activation. The checkpoint’s embedding ends after the second linear layer; each residual block applies its own SiLU. This extra SiLU changes the conditioning for every learned upscale. Return h instead. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Two conditioning bugs found while diffing against the reference PyTorch
implementation (ComfyUI MiniMax-H3 latent upscaler):
- H3ResBlock activated the shared embedding in place. The stage builds emb
once and hands the same tensor to every residual block, so the first block's
in-place SiLU left the buffer activated and the following blocks applied SiLU
to an already activated embedding. Use the out-of-place ggml_silu.
- H3Embed returned an extra SiLU. The checkpoint's embed is
Sequential(Linear, SiLU, Linear) and ends at the second linear layer; each
residual block supplies its own activation, so the trailing SiLU activated
the conditioning twice. Return the linear output directly.
The learned network is not an identity mapping at scale 1, so a hires target
that matches the draft latent size must return the packed latent untouched
instead of resampling through the model. The reference node short-circuits the
same way. Add the guard to both the interpolate and the learned paths, and
correct the runner's doc comment, which claimed to return a denormalized latent
although the per-channel (de)normalization is applied by the caller.
The latent upscaler (bf16) segfaults on my ROCm build (stack trace points to free_sd_video_generation_result(), but that's probably not right). But with bicubic upscaling it works as expected.
…_params
Two defects found once a compiler was available (MinGW g++ 16.2.0):
- The three init_params overrides took 'const std::string&' while GGMLBlock
declares the prefix by value, so none of them overrode anything and the
translation unit did not compile. This is the first actual build of the
branch.
- H3TemporalConv built its depthwise kernel as a dense Conv3d(C, C, (k,1,1)).
The reference module is Conv3d(C, C, (k,1,1), groups=C), so the checkpoint
stores [C, 1, k, 1, 1]; the loader folds it to [1, 1, k, C] (2,560 values at
C=512), while a dense Conv3d expects [1, 1, k, C*C] (1,310,720). Every other
tensor in the checkpoint already matched, so the upscaler could never have
loaded. Expanding the kernel to a block-diagonal dense one would restore
loading but multiply the conv cost by 512x, which is not affordable for a 3D
conv on an iGPU; implement the depthwise convolution directly as k shifted
multiply-adds along T instead (elementwise ops only, so every backend
supports it).
Verified against the released bf16 checkpoint: all 322 tensors now match the
shapes this code expects.
…eights
detect_from_weights read ne[0] for the folded 4D form. The loader folds a
PyTorch 5D kernel [OC, IC, kD, kH, kW] to [OC*IC, kD, kH, kW] and then
reverse_ne turns it into [kW, kH, kD, OC*IC], so ne[0] is the spatial extent
(1) and the temporal extent sits at index 2. The probe therefore derived
temporal_kernel = 1 for this checkpoint, built 1-tap depthwise convolutions
and then failed the model-manager shape check on every dwconv weight with
'got [1, 1, 5, 512], expected [1, 1, 1, 512]'.
Both layouts that can reach this code keep kD at index 2, so read ne[2]
unconditionally.
Verified end to end on CPU with the released bf16 checkpoint: the learned
path now loads all 322 tensors, upscales latent 16x16x7x24 to 32x32 (T
preserved), refines, and decodes a 512x512x22 video with audio.
@stduhpf Thanks for the ROCm data point — it made me go and get a real compiler onto this machine, and that turned up three defects in the learned path that the static review had missed. All three are fixed in the branch now (09227ca, 7f98042); the CPU-only build compiles clean and both paths run end to end.
What was wrong, in the order I hit it:
The temporal depthwise conv was built as a dense Conv3d. The reference module is Conv3d(C, C, (k,1,1), groups=C), so the released checkpoint stores [C, 1, k, 1, 1], which the safetensors loader folds to [1, 1, k, C] — 2,560 values at C=512. A dense Conv3d(C, C, (k,1,1)) expects [1, 1, k, C*C], i.e. 512x that. Every other tensor in the checkpoint already matched, so this one could never bind. It is now a real depthwise conv implemented as k shifted multiply-adds along T (elementwise only, so every backend supports it). I deliberately did not expand the kernel to a block-diagonal dense one: that would restore loading but multiply the conv cost by 512x, which is the last thing you want on an iGPU.
The kernel length was probed from the wrong axis.detect_from_weights read ne[0] for the folded 4D form, but the loader's fold plus reverse_ne leaves the layout as [kW, kH, kD, C], so ne[0] is the spatial extent (1) and ne[2] is the temporal one. It derived temporal_kernel = 1, built 1-tap convolutions, and then tripped the model-manager shape check on all 24 dwconv weights with got [1, 1, 5, 512], expected [1, 1, 1, 512].
The three init_params overrides didn't compile. They took the prefix as const std::string& while GGMLBlock declares it by value, so GCC rejected them with marked 'override', but does not override. Worth flagging: this is a hard build error, which makes me curious how your ROCm build compiled — did you patch anything locally, or is your branch not the v3 patch from the issue?
On your segfault specifically: with the old code the learned checkpoint above cannot load at all, and that failure path is clean — video.cpp checks upscaled_latent.empty() and returns, so you get register H3 latent upsampler tensors ... failed plus generate failed and a non-zero exit, not a crash. I could not reproduce a segfault on CPU with any revision. So for your crash I still need:
the symbolized backtrace (gdb -batch -ex run -ex 'bt full' --args ./sd-cli ...) — at -O2 the free() frame is often misattributed, so the frame below it is the interesting one;
which upscaler checkpoint you used (repo + filename). Note the patch comments claim the kernel ships as a full block-diagonalConv3d, while the released v1 weights on Hugging Face are a genuine depthwise [C, 1, k, 1, 1] — if yours came from somewhere else, that would explain a different failure mode;
whether audio was enabled in the failing run.
Testing the current branch would settle a lot: the CPU path now produces 512x512x22 video with an intact audio track through both Latent (bicubic) and the learned upscaler (temporal_kernel = 5, all 322 tensors bound). If it still segfaults on your ROCm build after updating, the backtrace against these commits will be much more useful than against the old revision.

Audio is preserved
The time axis is never resampled, so the packed audio latent length stays valid across the stage change: the audio latent is unpacked around the upscale (and around the learned network), re-packed for the new spatial size, and
audio_lengthis passed unchanged to the refine pass and to the final audio decode. There is no LTX-style audio-length recompute because the frame count is unchanged.Files

On small cards this wants quantization +--vae-tiling+--offload-to-cpu.H3ResBlockonly implements the identity skip. The reference architecture falls back to aConv3d(1×1)skip when in/out channels differ; only the equal-channel case is handled here, so a checkpoint whose residual blocks widen the channel count would not bind.Suggested matrix: T2VA / I2VA / Ref2VA × {interpolating, learned} × {with/without audio} at 0.4 → 0.8 MP.

--init-imgor--end-img.--hires-sigmascan be used instead of denoising strength.
