Problem

rust2-ts refused Iterator::by_ref when Self is itself a &mut I, as in (&mut it).by_ref() with it: &mut I, or it.by_ref() in a function generic over I that is called with a &mut. The &mut &mut I it takes and returns is an rt.Place, but std's mapping took the iterator it points at and handed back the peeled iterator, so std_places refused it as a &mut its mapping would copy. Found writing dyn Iterator (#437).

Approach

by_ref returns the &mut Self it was given, so its mapping now passes that argument through unchanged:

  • pointer::takes_place gives by_ref the rt.Place rather than what it points at.
  • std_places counts it among the mappings that lend what they are given.
  • iter::call returns the argument before peeling the receiver, instead of the peeled iterator.

The new iters::lent differential case covers: partial consumption then reuse of the original, &mut &mut I, a &mut dyn Iterator and a &mut to it, a borrowed Box<dyn Iterator>, rebinding the local by writing through what by_ref returns, and a generic I that is a &mut or owned.

Impact

  • The translator's output: by_ref of a &mut I translates rather than being refused. No other API change.

Alternatives

  • Special-casing only the refusal and dereferencing the result again. Rejected: the result has to be the same place for a write through it to rebind the local.

Follow-ups

None.

Walkthrough

The change updates TypeScript lowering so Iterator::by_ref returns its receiver and is classified as lending and taking a place. It adds Rust and generated TypeScript fixtures for borrowed iterator reads, rebinding, and iterator helper functions. It also removes the related quest requirement and documentation.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 40ead

This change lets Iterator::by_ref on a mutable iterator reference translate to TypeScript by reusing the same iterator. It adds differential fixtures for partial consumption, rebinding, trait objects, and boxed iterators. No concrete defect is known; one optional suggestion adds coverage for a doubly nested reference passed through a generic helper. The change appears ready to merge.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 7 files.

Nitpick Add a nested &mut &mut call to halves.

1887-1890: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value

Add a nested &mut &mut call to halves.

The new lent case calls generic halves with an owned iterator and with one &mut. No other fixture that I inspected calls a generic by_ref helper with a nested &mut, so a regression in that specialization would not change this output. Add a nested call, then regenerate the expected output.

Suggested test addition
 	out.extend(halves(&mut rest, n));
+	out.extend(halves(&mut &mut rest, n));
 	out.extend(rest);

Review comment at @ts/fixtures/lang/src/iters.rs around lines 1887 - 1890:
Add a nested mutable-reference invocation of the generic halves helper in the
new lent case, alongside the existing owned-iterator and single-reference calls,
then regenerate the expected output to cover this specialization.
