Closes quest/m3/ts-unsafe/array-casts.md.

Problem

rust2-ts refused two things in a crate's own code. The first was *(s as *const [u8] as *const [u8; N]), as a cast from a pointer to `[u8]` to one to `[u8; 2]`, which reads the bytes of one type as another, though the cast reinterprets nothing. The second was std::io::IoSlice, as an unsupported type, so Buf::chunks_vectored was refused and left out of dyn Buf.

Approach

  • The cast: a *const [T] (an rs.RawSlice) cast to *const [T; N], by as or cast, is p.array(N), or p.byteArray(N) for bytes. That is the rs.Slice or rs.ByteSlice of N elements from the raw slice's first, which is what a pointer to an array already is. Nothing is checked at the cast, since Rust defines a cast past the slice's end and only a read needs the elements. Null and dangling stay null and dangling. It works for any element type, arrays of arrays included.
  • IoSlice: a new Std::IoSlice whose JS value is the rs.ByteSlice of the &[u8] it wraps. new, Deref, and Debug are the slice's. advance and advance_slices take their place, as MaybeUninit's methods do, and move it. They panic as wasm32's std does (repr_generic.rs's &self.0[n..], and advance_slices' assert!), at std's source locations through CALLEES. Bytes' chunks_vectored, both the provided one and Take's and Chain's, translates from its MIR, and dyn Buf no longer skips it.
  • Exposed bug, fixed here: Step::forward overflow of a char range panicked with a &str payload where std's expect makes a String (ts/runtime/rs/iter.ts). The new lang/panics cases shift kind % 75, which routed random inputs to it for the first time.

Tests, all differential against native wasm32:

  • pointers::array_casts: bytes, u32s, and arrays of bytes, each read, borrowed, and written through at every offset. Also compared with first_chunk, cast past the slice's end and read only within it, and null, dangling, and empty raw slices.
  • buf::vectored (stock): chunks_vectored of Bytes, BytesMut, &[u8], own buffers, a wrapped VecDeque<u8> (whose impl translates since moq-dev/rust2#611), Take, Chain, &mut, Box<dyn Buf>, and &dyn Buf. Then Deref, Debug, advance, and advance_slices, panics included.
  • lang/panics cases 72 and 73: both panic sites, located as the native hook reads them. A mutation of each site and of the runtime fails the test.

Impact

  • Translator output only: these casts and IoSlice translate where they were refused. A dyn Buf object gets chunksVectored$Buf once a call dispatches to it.
  • Refusals: a cast of a raw slice the body shows starts at a lone byte to *const [u8; N > 0].
  • Runtime: RawSlice.array, RawSlice.byteArray, rs.ioSliceAdvance, and rs.ioSliceAdvanceSlices.

Decisions

Decided with the maintainer on 2026-11-07, at the round 6 design checkpoint: review rounds 4 to 6 each found one more route by which the body shows an empty raw slice of a lone byte reaching a cast to *const [u8; N > 0] (&raw *s, NonNull::from, then NonNull::new(p).unwrap()).

  • ✅ Stop tracing here. Fx::lone_byte_array (ts/src/lower/mir/origin.rs) refuses the cast, by as or cast, where the raw slice's start traces through reborrows, pointer casts, and every std call pointer::from_reference or Derives::Same describes to a lone byte, matching stray's coverage. Other routes, such as through Option::unwrap, are left to the run-time throw, as origin.rs's module doc leaves a pointer the body doesn't show. The gap is listed in quest/m3/ts-runtime-throws.md.
  • ✅ Plan the root fix in this PR: quest/m3/ts-unsafe/lone-byte-buffers.md, in m3, keeps a u8 local whose &raw the body takes in a Uint8Array(1), removing this refusal and origin.rs's other lone-byte refusals for locals.
  • Rejected: keep tracing each route review finds (more code for a corner case no known crate hits, and routes never run out); revert to the round 3 head (refuses nothing even where the body plainly shows the lone byte); lone bytes in a Uint8Array(1) in this PR (a representation change outside this quest's Goal).

Choices made without asking

  • No check at the cast. An eager bounds check would throw where Rust only casts, against the 2026-11-04 rule quest/m3/ts-runtime-throws.md. A read past the array JS keeps is UB in Rust and goes unchecked here.
  • A raw slice of a byte in no array of bytes: an empty one cast to *const [u8; 0] keeps its pointer, as ptrByteSlice does. Cast to *const [u8; N] with N > 0, which no Uint8Array can share, it is refused at translation where the body shows the slice starts at a lone byte (see Decisions), and elsewhere byteArray throws rust2-ts: a raw or mutable slice of a byte in no array of bytes, a gap listed in quest/m3/ts-runtime-throws.md.
  • Left out: IoSliceMut, which nothing here needs since BufMut doesn't use it, and the unstable IoSlice::as_slice.

Alternatives

  • IoSlice through library::wrapped, as core's niche_types are, with its methods from core's MIR. Rejected: advance takes a &mut, which from_mut excludes, and a Std variant reuses the existing Std matches.

Follow-ups

None to plan: the root fix is planned in this PR (see Decisions). The VecDeque<u8> Buf gap this hit landed in moq-dev/rust2#611 meanwhile.

Related

moq-dev/rust2#608 reworks slices of arrays into rs.Runs. It has no code yet. Once it lands, RawSlice.array of a slice of arrays needs its representation, and pointers::array_casts covers that case.

Caused by

  • moq-dev/rust2#570 - located a char range's Step::forward panic for a hook without marking its payload a String

The refusals are as old as the raw-slice model (moq-dev/rust2#201), with no single culprit.

Validation

  • just ci: passed at the head, after merging main (89 fixture tests, differential included)
  • fixtures/reject's pointers::lone_byte_arrays: the as, cast, &raw *s, ptr::from_ref, and NonNull::from routes each refused with a span

A `*const [T]` cast to `*const [T; N]` is the `rs.Slice` or `rs.ByteSlice`
of N elements from the raw slice's first, which nothing checks until a
read through it, as in Rust. Null and dangling ones stay so.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An `IoSlice` is the `rs.ByteSlice` of the bytes it lends: `new`, `Deref`,
and `Debug` are the slice's, and `advance` and `advance_slices` move the
place they take, panicking where wasm32's std does, at its source's
location. A `dyn Buf` now holds `chunks_vectored` once a call dispatches
to it. A char range's `Step::forward` overflow is a `String` payload, as
std's `expect` makes it.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The changes add slice-to-array pointer casts with checks for casts traced to standalone bytes. They map IoSlice to byte slices and add runtime advancement helpers. They also add chunks_vectored implementations for buffer types and extend pointer, panic, and buffer fixtures. The character iterator’s overflow path now passes an additional panic argument.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 1efb5

Two pointer-cast edge cases remain: initialized vector spare slots can yield incorrect values, and standalone-byte casts can throw unexpectedly. Mergeability is low risk with explicit acceptance and follow-up for these limitations.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names two of the PR's main changes: the slice-pointer-to-array-pointer cast translation and support for std::io::IoSlice. The changeset matches both, including the new Std::IoSlice variant, RawSlice.array/byteArray, and the array_casts fixture. The title does not mention the vectored chunk support, the dyn Buf change, or the Step::forward panic-payload fix. It is specific and accurate for the primary changes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description matches the changeset closely. It covers the cast translation (RawSlice.array and byteArray), the new Std::IoSlice with advance and advance_slices, the vectored chunk translation, and the Step::forward panic-payload fix. It also lists the fixture tests, the lang/panics cases, and the reject fixtures that the diff adds.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 93.18% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 44 functions across 30 files. Reviewed head c3db41ce6db8a2e90acf899a0045370f65c7d319 against base 277b1ec4e1bfc2f2b65c40a6c235b57de2e051a6.

No actionable findings in the reviewed changes. Slice-to-array casts preserve the existing element storage and offset without using the source slice length as an eager bounds check. Null/dangling casts preserve their pointer value, and the zero-length standalone-byte correction retains pointer identity through ptrByteSlice without reading the byte. The fixture covers offsets, aliasing writes, nested arrays and the formerly failing empty standalone case.

IoSlice's immutable ByteSlice view is rebound through a Place for advance, rather than mutating a copied view. I compared advance_slices with the pinned Rust source: subtracting individual lengths avoids accumulation overflow, empty buffers are skipped, the remaining outer slice is assigned before the over-advance assertion, and only the first remaining buffer is shortened. The added hook snapshots name the pinned std panic sites; the new cases are reachable under modulo 75. The Buf trait-object method and generated forwarding paths now include chunks_vectored. The char Step::forward change marks its expect panic payload as String.

Direction: retain the differential and panic-site coverage. Recheck integration with the separate Runs migration when combining branches. Nonempty standalone-byte raw casts remain the explicitly documented representation limitation, not a capability established by this review.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of lowering/runtime changes, relevant generated fixtures and pinned Rust IoSlice source. I did not run quest context, compilation, differential or mutation tests, runtime tests or CI, and did not independently verify the reported passes. GitHub currently reports mergeable=false. This is not runtime validation or a merge-readiness claim.

Incremental review of head 37e2d73c44eb466f79fc461e4262861bb5fb119c against base 324a7b70aefc3719780dafc9d8e27dc252261bad, following c3db41ce6db8a2e90acf899a0045370f65c7d319.

No new actionable findings. The production lowering/runtime delta is unchanged after the main merge. The substantive integration addition exercises the now-supported VecDeque Buf implementation in the vectored fixture: it rotates the deque, selects it at kind % 11 == 9, retains the boxed fallback, and updates the advance-test selector to divide by 11. The generated chunks_vectored path handles an empty destination/deque and emits the second backing slice only when it is nonempty and a second destination slot exists. Generated call sites and imports select that implementation consistently.

Direction: retain this cross-feature regression coverage. The earlier description's VecDeque follow-up is now stale because #611 is in the base; update that note when refreshing the description.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static comparison of both base-relative deltas and the new fixture/generated path. No compilation, differential tests, mutation tests or CI executed; merged main changes were not independently re-reviewed. Earlier raw-pointer representation limits remain. This is not a passing-build or merge-readiness claim.

Incremental review of head 1efb54b against base e7a02cf, following review 5809796655 at 37e2d73.

No new actionable findings in the focused follow-up. The lone-byte guard now runs for both MIR pointer casts and ptr/NonNull::cast, before the Place-only early return. It distinguishes a nonzero byte-array destination from the supported zero-length case, and follows the existing origin model through same-pointee casts, raw dereferences, from_reference and Derives::Same calls. The reject fixture registers five routes with corresponding expected diagnostics. The runtime representation itself remains unchanged.

Direction: retain the refusal regression cases and the separate lone-byte-buffer follow-up. The documented tracing boundary intentionally leaves routes such as Option extraction to the existing runtime throw; this review does not imply those casts are now supported. The buffer plan appropriately scopes its representation change to address-taken locals and retains the limitation for other storage.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static comparison of both base-relative diffs and the relevant lowering, pointer classification, fixtures and follow-up documentation. Merged main changes were separated from PR-owned changes, not exhaustively re-reviewed. No compilation, differential tests, mutation tests or CI were run; reported validation and the maintainer discussion described in the PR were not independently reproduced. This COMMENT is not merge approval.

Preserve the pointer through nonempty byte-array casts.

When a helper casts a zero-length raw slice of a standalone byte to *const [u8; 1], byteArray(1) throws before is_null() can return false. The origin check cannot trace the argument. Preserve the original place through the cast, including for byte-array reads and writes.

Review comment at @ts/runtime/rs.ts at line 533:
Update the cast handling around the `byteArray(1)` error so casts from a
standalone byte preserve the original place and origin through nonempty
byte-array reads and writes. Ensure origin tracking remains available to the
null check, rather than rejecting the cast before `is_null()` can return false;
retain existing safeguards for unsupported casts.

Declining, per the maintainer decision recorded in this PR's Decisions section (2026-11-07). Translation refuses this cast where the body shows the raw slice starts at a lone byte (Fx::lone_byte_array in ts/src/lower/mir/origin.rs). A route it can't trace, such as through a helper, keeps the run-time throw, as origin.rs's module doc leaves a pointer the body doesn't show. That gap is listed in quest/m3/ts-runtime-throws.md. Preserving the place through the cast isn't possible in the current model, since a *const [u8; N] is an rs.ByteSlice over a Uint8Array. The root fix, keeping such a byte local in a Uint8Array(1), is planned as quest/m3/ts-unsafe/lone-byte-buffers.md.

@kixelated Thanks for explaining the decision. I accept deferring the change. The runtime-throw gap is documented, and the representation fix is planned.

Would you like a GitHub issue for the follow-up, or is the quest document sufficient?
