quest: wasm-bindgen imports read the encoded program - #638
The imports quest could not start until it was known how rust2-ts reads each wasm-bindgen import's JS shape (its class, js_name, kind, and catch), since #[wasm_bindgen] is gone after expansion. This spike compares the two candidate sources, sizes translating web-rs's web-codecs VideoEncoder, and rewrites the imports quest to the pick. No translator change lands.
Approach
Pick: the encoded program
Encoded program (picked)
extern blocks' source
Where
the #[link_section = "__wasm_bindgen_unstable"] static each #[wasm_bindgen] emits on wasm32, read with eval_static_initializer
the dependency's files, re-parsed from the wrapper's span
Reaches rustc
yes: metadata records every non-foreign static's initializer and its codegen_fn_attrs (rustc_metadata/src/rmeta/encoder.rs:1535,1643 at nightly-2026-10-15). CStore::num_def_ids_untracked enumerates the anonymous const _ statics
yes, from disk
macro_rules! imports
all
none: js-sys's arrays! makes 28 function imports and a type for each of 11 typed arrays, 308 in all. The encoder path reaches Uint8Array::{new, length, byte_length, copy_to_slice} through copy_to_with_u8_slice
Semantics
exact, as the macro computed them
re-implements ForeignItemFn's ~400 lines of naming and inference rules in macro-support/src/parser.rs
Version cost
one decoder per schema (below)
stable syntax
Proof of concept, outside the tree: a 79-line reader over cli-support's 181-line decoder and wasm_bindgen_shared::shared_api! at 0.2.130 decoded a wasm32 build of web-codecs (223 programs, 2348 imports, 2135 functions). It found all 49 __wbg_ shims the encoder census reached, with method kind, class, getter or setter name, namespace, and catch. For example, __wbg_encode_6b4b0b772ab9ea17 is VideoEncoder regular encode, catch=true, and prototype.set.call is in namespace Uint8Array.
Decoding cost across versions
SCHEMA_VERSION changes only with the schema, not every release. Since the 2025-11-28 release (0.2.106), it changed at 0.2.107, 0.2.114, 0.2.115, 0.2.118, 0.2.119, 0.2.121, 0.2.122, 0.2.128, and 0.2.130. 8 of those 9 bumps added or removed fields or variants in shared_api!, for example suspending, generic_per_mono, and jspi at 0.2.128, and module_path at 0.2.130. Decoding is positional, so no field can be skipped. Consumers already differ today:
moq's lockfile pins 0.2.129, which is schema 0.2.128.
web-rs has no lockfile, and a fresh resolve gives 0.2.130.
wasm-bindgen-shared works as a library (no_std, with shared_api! exported), but only at one version per build, since cargo unifies 0.2.x. cli-support's decode is a private module in a crate that pulls in walrus, so it has to be vendored.
The quest's plan: one field list, gated per schema, covering every schema from 0.2.128 on. Another schema is refused at its crate, naming the range.
Sizing: census of web-codecs' encoder
rust2-ts --census with roots VideoEncoderConfig, VideoEncoder, and VideoEncoded runs today on web-rs 42d4e4de (wasm-bindgen 0.2.130, web-sys and js-sys 0.3.107): 125 refusals over 580 function instances.
54 "no MIR" calls: the imports and wasm-bindgen's raw intrinsics (the imports quest).
wasm-bindgen glue, which the imports and closures quests replace:
closures' (usize, usize) fat-pointer transmutes and fn-pointer casts;
Vec::from_raw_parts and pointer casts for slices;
transmute_copy between js-sys's ErasableGeneric types, such as Promise<T> to Promise;
WasmAbi::Prim1..4.
About 50 in tokio's sync::mpsc, sync::watch, and Notify: intrusive linked lists, raw pointers into UnsafeCell, NonNullDebug, and process::abort. No quest covers these. It is a follow-up.
The quest's other questions
JsValue, JsCast, Closure around generic code. An imported type is #[repr(transparent)] struct VideoEncoder { obj: EventTarget }, chained to JsValue. Its generated From, AsRef, Deref, and JsCast impls reach the representation only through the obj field, transmute_copy, and &*(val as *const JsValue as *const Self). If JsValue, each imported type, and their ErasableGeneric instances are the JS value itself, those all become the identity. JsCast's provided methods (dyn_into and the rest) then translate from MIR over each type's instanceof shim. Closure::wrap(Box<dyn FnMut>) and Closure::new(f) can be the closure itself, since dyn FnMut already translates as the closure, behind a function that throws once the Closure drops, as wasm-bindgen's does. web-codecs uses Closure::wrap, not Closure::new.
The native side of the differential test. The flake's nixpkgs has wasm-bindgen-cli_0_2_129, not 0.2.130, so a fixture pins 0.2.129. The test reuses tests/differential.ts's raw harness::run export through the CLI. Bun hosts the imports quest's synchronous js-sys and web-sys calls. WebCodecs needs a browser: headless Chrome 155 here passed isConfigSupported for VP8 and gave a key chunk with a decoderConfig and two deltas from three 64x64 frames. Only the bench shell carries Chromium today.
Consumer cargo config. Nothing to do. rust2-ts runs cargo from the package's directory (driver/src/cargo.rs:150), so web-rs's .cargo/config.toml--cfg=web_sys_unstable_apis applies beside the profile's rustflags. The census compiled web-sys's VideoEncoder that way.
Also found
web-sys 0.3.107 uses vendor_prefix (AudioContext, OfflineAudioContext), which the epic's attribute list missed. Added.
JsFuture and spawn_local now live in js_sys::futures, and wasm-bindgen-futures 0.4.80 is a re-export shim.
js-sys's program carries a JSPI bridge declared with raw_module = "__wbindgen_placeholder__" and suspending. So refusals must be per reached import, never per program. A suspending import can't be a JS call. spawn_local, once mapped, never reaches the bridge.
In 0.2.130, 54 __wbindgen_* intrinsics are ordinary imports in the program, so the runtime needs only the JS bodies of the ones translation reaches, as cli-support's intrinsic table gives them.
shapes come from the encoded program, over the schema-gated decoder;
JsValue and imported types are JS-represented, and wrappers are replaced whole, with the CLI's boundary conversions;
wasm-bindgen's intrinsics get JS bodies;
refusals are per reached import;
a Bun differential test covers synchronous calls.
It is split, since the epic said to split when the work outgrows one PR: closures [L] maps Closure and js-sys's futures and proves web-sys's VideoEncoder in headless Chromium.
The epic records the pick, the corrected attribute list, js-sys's futures, and the open tokio gap.
The spike quest is deleted.
Impact
No public API or wire change. Quest tree only.
Alternatives
Source reading: rejected for the macro_rules! gap above.
Re-running wasm-bindgen's macro on source tokens, at the translator's own pinned version, to get one schema: rejected, since it misses the same macro_rules! imports.
Supporting only the newest schema, as the wasm-bindgen CLI does: rejected, since it would make moq, at 0.2.129, change its lockfile to translate.
Choices made without asking
Supported schemas start at 0.2.128 (moq's pin), each field gated, rather than the newest only.
The imports quest is split into imports and closures. Its end-to-end proof moves from web-codecs' VideoEncoder to a fixture with web-codecs' calls and without tokio, since tokio's sync is refused. web-codecs end to end stays the epic's own work.
suspending (js-sys's JSPI bridge) is refused where reached, rather than supported, contrary to the epic's "every attribute web-sys and js-sys use": no JS call can suspend. The epic's Plan says so.
Follow-ups
tokio's sync::mpsc and sync::watch in rust2-ts, mapped into the runtime as bytes and hashbrown are, or translated: plan. web-codecs' encoder and decoders hand frames and errors through them, so the epic's end-to-end goal needs it. The census lists about 50 refusals there.
Validation
quest check --base origin/main: 51 documents ok.
just ci: passes (lint and quest checks; no code changed).
Measurements: the census, decoder proof of concept, macro counts, and headless Chrome run above. The scripts and outputs were in the worktree's .tmp/ and are not committed.

The spike's findings: translation reads each import's JS shape from the
program wasm-bindgen's macro encodes in a link_section static, since
source reading misses the macro_rules!-made imports on the encoder's path.
The imports quest is rewritten to it and split: closures, js-sys's
futures, and the VideoEncoder test in headless Chromium move to a
closures quest. The epic records tokio::sync as a further gap for
web-codecs.

Spike: how rust2-ts reads wasm-bindgen imports
quest: wasm-bindgen imports read the encoded program
Nov 7, 2026
No actionable findings in this documentation-only spike and rescoping. The plan separates schema decoding, reached-import refusals, JS-represented types and boundary conversions from closure/promise support. Unsupported JSPI imports do not reject unrelated imports in the same program. The synchronous differential fixture is pinned to the available CLI version, while browser WebCodecs validation is assigned to the dependent closures quest. The epic explicitly retains the tokio synchronization gap rather than claiming the smaller fixture proves web-codecs end to end. The inspected driver/src/cargo.rs does run Cargo from the target package's directory, supporting the consumer-config rationale.
Direction: preserve the per-schema failure boundary, native/translated conversion comparisons and explicit remaining tokio work when implementing these plans. No translator support or end-to-end WebCodecs support is delivered by this PR.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the quest changes, PR report and Cargo launch path. I did not reproduce the census, encoded-program decoder, schema-history counts, browser measurements or quest/CI checks. The temporary measurement scripts and outputs are not committed, so their numerical results remain author-reported, not independently verified here. COMMENT only, not merge approval.
The quest documents now specify reading wasm-bindgen import shapes from encoded program metadata and translating supported imports into direct JavaScript calls. They define supported schema versions, value conversions, refusal conditions, and differential-test scope. A separate closures-and-promises quest describes closure and future translation using a WebCodecs fixture. The spike planning document was removed.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 4cf4f
The plans need bounded schema support and correct Fn callback reentrancy semantics. No translator behavior changes in this PR, so merging carries low immediate risk with these planning corrections tracked.
