fix(scene): a replay's sound plays with its pictures - #100
Finishes quest/m0/replay-av-sync.md, a follow-up of moq-dev/studio#93.
Problem
A replay source wrote its sound to the bus when it was due, and the bus sounds a write 50 ms (BUS_LATENCY) later, so a replay's sound was heard 50 ms behind its pictures in every output. The replay also started its clock before decoding, so decoding the first group up to the span's start made its first pictures late (20 ms in the new test), and closing the channel at the span's end dropped the last 50 ms of sound still queued.
Approach
Driver::replay now plays as #93's play_clip does, minus the loop handling:
Each sound goes through playout::Writer, written a bus latency ahead of its moment. The ahead helper from play_clip becomes a shared module function.
The first picture and first sound from the span's start are decoded, and the source's own track opened, before the clock starts. The replay begins a bus latency after that.
Pictures still show at their moment and are encoded onto the source's own track as they show, stamped with when they showed.
Replays count in Run: Feed::replay starts a new play, begun is set when the replay's clock starts (where its span starts, even in a gap), and ended when its span ends. Tests use it to know when a replay begins, as the media tests do.
As Feed::play does for media, Feed::replay clears the picture as it is asked, and a cut-off replay's pictures are refused through show_play, so none is drawn after the click.
A gap or end marker before the first picture no longer stops the decoding done before the clock starts. Such a marker has nothing to clear or mark yet.
A sound frame across the span's start is kept and written whole with its true moment, a little before the replay begins, so Writer drops only the part before the start instead of the whole frame.
Each of the last three has a test that fails without it: a_new_replay_clears_the_one_playing ("cleared at once"), a_replay_from_a_gap_shows_its_first_picture_on_time, and a_replay_plays_the_sound_across_its_start (heard 10 ms late without the fix).
a_replays_sound_plays_with_its_pictures replays CLIP (H.264 and Opus) and checks that the first picture shows as the replay begins and that the first sound is heard within a bus block of it. It shares in_step with #93's a_media_files_sound_plays_with_its_pictures. On main's replay driver it fails: the sound is heard 50 ms after the replay begins, and the picture shows 20 ms late.
Impact
A replay's sound plays in step with its pictures on program, published scenes, recordings, and Listen, instead of 50 ms behind.
A replay starts about 50 ms after the click plus the time to decode up to its start, rather than at the click with late first pictures. It then plays its whole span from the first picture.
The last 50 ms of a replay's sound is no longer cut off at its end, and a replay starting partway through a sound frame no longer begins with up to a frame of silence.
A new replay clears the old one's picture immediately on the click.
Public API: Feed::run() now also reports a replay source's latest replay (Run::play, begun, ended). No signature changes, no wire or scene-file changes.
Choices made without asking
Every replay begins a bus latency ahead, including slowed and picture-only replays that have no sound to write. This matches media files, which do the same for silent clips, and keeps one start rule. The alternative was to add the lead only when sound plays, which would start silent replays 50 ms sooner but add a second case.
Decode before starting the clock, as play_clip does. Without this, the A/V offset at a replay's start would depend on how long the decoder takes to reach the span's start, up to a GOP. The cost is a start delayed by that decode time.
Run for replays: this reuses the existing type rather than adding a private test hook. Nothing outside tests reads a replay's Run yet.
Alternatives
Hand pictures over ahead through a Shows queue, as media does. Media needs that queue only so a loop's next play can hand over its first picture before the last one shows. A replay never loops, so it sleeps until each picture is due.
Follow-ups
None.
Validation
just ci on Linux (nixos2) at 791e02c: passed, 290 tests.
The replay and sync tests (test(/replay/) | test(/sound_plays/)) passed 30 times in a row at 97f9cc0.
Each new test was run with its fix reverted and failed.
CodeRabbit's four findings on 29e0922: the stale-picture guard, the leading marker, and the sound across the start are fixed as above. Run::begun meaning the span's start is now documented rather than changed, since the span's start is what a replay's timing counts from and what ended - begun measures. Each thread has a reply.
Review
Reviewer: Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort (quest review, round 3)
A replay source wrote its sound when due, so the bus mixed it 50 ms behind
its pictures. It now writes each sound a bus latency ahead through
`playout::Writer`, as media files do, and begins once its first picture
and sound are decoded, so neither starts late. Its plays count in `Run`.

Replay sources now track play numbers and report replay begin and end times. Replay playback prepares video and eligible audio samples before starting, then schedules pictures and sound against the same scaled replay clock. Audio is written through Writer. Tests use the reported run times and check first-picture and first-sound timing. The quest entry and planning document for replay audio synchronization were removed.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 29e09
Replay synchronization improves, but replacement can briefly show an old picture, leading boundaries can delay the first picture, and reported begin times can precede presentation. These are bounded issues suitable for owner-aware follow-up; audio-tail coverage should also be strengthened.

Explanation
The description is specific and on-topic. It names the files and functions touched (Driver::replay, playout::Writer, Feed::run, Run::begun/ended, BUS_LATENCY, the ahead helper, and the new tests). It explains the problem (replay sound 50 ms behind pictures, late first pictures, and the last 50 ms of sound cut off), the approach, the public API addition (Feed::run() reporting replay runs), and the validation performed. It fully relates to the changeset.

The test checks only onset, so it can pass if replay drops queued audio near the span’s end. Continue mixing through the end and assert audible samples in the final interval. Use a fixture with a known audible tail.

- A new replay clears the picture as it is asked, and a cut-off replay's
pictures are refused, as a media file's are.
- A gap or end before a replay's first picture no longer stops decoding
before the clock starts, so that picture is not late.
- A sound across a replay's start plays from it, rather than being
dropped whole.
- `Run::begun` says a replay's is where its span starts.

No actionable findings. Reusing playout::Writer and preparing the initial media before starting the replay clock addresses the timing issue without adding another playback queue. The current code handles replacement pictures, leading gaps, overlapping initial audio, and the documented span-origin meaning of Run::begun; the earlier review findings are not repeated.
Verification: GitHub-only static review of all changed files, surrounding replay/media/publication paths, and the added tests. No builds, tests, live A/V playback, or quest context execution; the pinned context source was read. Author-reported validation was not reproduced.
Pick (/quest-complete, maintainer's blanket pick under /afk): ✅ Merge. Three CodeRabbit findings are fixed with tests, and the fourth (Run::begun) is documented. Codex rounds 1–3 and the OpenAI review found nothing.
