quest: skip the Mesa Wayland trial, unblocking windows-host - #105
cef-headless waited on an HDMI dummy plug on nixos2's Intel GPU for a Wayland-on-Mesa trial, and windows-host required that trial before nixos2 could switch to Windows.
Approach
/quest-unblock on 2026-11-07. Every wait was checked before asking:
pin-audio-pan: cleared (moq-dev/moq#8180 merged; Strip::set_pan is on moq main). Started as its own quest instead of edited here.
cef-headless: nixos2's card1-HDMI-A-* all disconnected.
signing: not renewed yet (op signed out, so notarytool history could not run).
The other pin quests and overlay-blitz-release: upstream quests still open, and blitz-dom is still 0.3.0-beta.4.
This PR:
cef-headless: drops the Mesa Wayland rerun and its Waiting item, and narrows the Goal to the work left (fail loudly when the GPU path cannot paint; rule out a Wayland display with no output at setup).
windows-host: drops its Required link to cef-headless, so its agent step (boot order) is ready.
Decisions
Mesa Wayland trial: ✅ skip it, leaving the result unknown (rejected: connect an HDMI dummy plug). Reason: let nixos2 become the Windows host now.
Impact
None for users; quest files only.
Alternatives
The dummy plug, rejected above.
Follow-ups
None.
Validation
quest check: pass. just ci not run: quest files only.

Score: 10/10, The documentation consistently records the decision to skip the Mesa Wayland trial and removes the Windows-host dependency without changing runtime behavior.
No actionable findings in this documentation-only change. I reviewed all three changed files and the surrounding quest dependency context. The milestone entry and cef-headless goal consistently narrow the work to reporting GPU paint failures and handling output-less Wayland displays. The Mesa trial is explicitly left unverified, and windows-host no longer depends on that trial while retaining its Windows setup requirements.
Direction: no revisions requested from this review. Keep the remaining browser failure handling and Windows host validation in their respective quests.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review. I did not run quest context, quest check, just ci, or hardware/browser tests. The PR reports quest check passed; the Check workflow for this head was still in progress when inspected. This review does not verify Mesa/Wayland rendering, Windows readiness, or a passing CI result.
The documentation updates the browser-source failure requirement and the goal for the GPU paint path. It removes the Mesa Wayland trial instructions and records shared-texture painting on Mesa Wayland as unknown. The host plan now makes nixos2 the Windows host and records that the Intel GPU Wayland trial is skipped.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 25f72
The host-plan change is mergeable with bounded documentation corrections: distinguish planned failure reporting from current behavior and align the no-output requirement with the permitted fallback.

Describe loud failure as remaining work.
If the first shared-image allocation fails, the source can stay Starting; it does not yet report why. Update the decision so it does not present loud failure as the current mitigation.

When a Wayland display has no output, the linked quest permits falling back to X11 or CPU painting. A successful fallback satisfies the quest but conflicts with the index’s required source failure. Describe the setup check instead.
