feat(scene): browser sources share one persistent profile, and reload - #29
Each browser source ran in a helper of its own on a fresh temporary profile, so no cookie or login (an alert service, a chat widget) survived a restart of the source or the studio. Worse, only root_cache_path was set, which leaves CEF in incognito mode. A failed page also stayed failed until the source was edited.
Approach
One helper for every page. The maintainer decided on one shared profile (#8, recorded in the quest). CEF's process-singleton lock lets only one process hold a profile, so per-page helpers cannot share one, and copying cookies between instances would still lose localStorage and IndexedDB logins. Every page now runs in one helper, CEF's browser process. The socket protocol gains page ids (Start, then Open/Close/Input/FrameRate per page; events carry the id), and the studio routes events to each page's source.
Crash isolation. Each page still renders in its own renderer process, so a page crash fails only its source. A crash of the helper itself now fails every browser source, and the next page to start (a reload) starts a new helper. That is the tradeoff: in return pages share the profile, there is one browser and GPU process instead of N, and CEF starts once.
Profile. It lives at $XDG_DATA_HOME/moq-studio/browser (~/.local/share/...), mode 0700, with cache_path set so it lives on disk and persist_session_cookies on. Engine::stop stops the helper on quit and waits for it to exit, so cookies are flushed and the profile is free for a relaunch. A second studio on the same profile fails its browser sources with "another studio is using the browser profile ...", and the first opens no window for it.
Reload. Sources gains a Reload button on browser sources, which restarts the source (Sources::restart). It closes and reopens the page in the shared helper, so it also recovers a failed page or a crashed helper.
Opening or closing a page never waits on a hung helper. What the studio has yet to tell the helper waits in a per-helper outbox (browser/outbox.rs), which the writer takes in batches: each page's open, frame rate, and close coalesce, a page closed before its open is written never opens and drops its pending input, and input is bounded at 256. What waits therefore scales with the pages open, not with how often they were reloaded, and the helper never replays obsolete pages. A page that closes itself with window.close() fails its own source. A writer that loses the socket shuts it down, so the helper exits instead of running unheard.
Impact
Browser sources keep cookies and logins across a reload and a studio restart, in one per-user profile.
New Reload button for browser sources in the Sources panel.
A crash of the browser process fails every browser source, not just one.
Only one studio at a time can run browser sources on a profile.
Alternatives
Per-page helpers on per-source profiles: this keeps full process isolation, but the maintainer ruled out one profile per source.
Handing one profile between helpers: only one page at a time could hold it.
CEF reload_ignore_cache for Reload: it cannot recover a page whose renderer or helper died, so restarting the source covers every case with one path.
Stopping the helper when the last page closes: a new page would pay CEF's startup again and race the old helper for the profile lock. The helper runs from the first page until quit.
Decisions
✅ Maintainer: keep each page's pending open and close, so a closed page's queued open is dropped and Reload clicks on a hung helper cannot pile up (done in the outbox). The shared helper, and its crash isolation, stands.
Choices made without asking
The shared helper is the only design that meets the shared-profile decision. I judged renderer-level isolation enough and did not hold the PR for this call.
The profile goes in the data directory, not config or cache, since logins are user data. There is no flag to move it.
Session cookies persist.
Testing
outbox::tests, which need no CEF, cover the following:
Reloads coalesce, so a page closed before its open never opens and its input and frame rate go with it.
Each batch puts a page's open first.
Frame rates coalesce to the newest.
A release past the backlog is owed once and delivered after the older input.
run::tests::a_helper_that_stops_reading_blocks_nothing checks that 99 reloads against a stalled helper leave only the newest page to open.
just ci on macOS passes.
Linux workspace clippy, with and without the device, codec, and cef features, is clean on NixOS.
just render-sw on NixOS: everything passes except the renderer half of a_crash_drops_only_its_source, which already fails on main (see Follow-ups). Five further runs of the browser tests gave the same result each time.
New CEF test cookies_survive_a_restart: a page served on loopback sets a session cookie. The test checks that the cookie survives a reload, that a second studio on the same profile fails with "another studio" while the first keeps drawing, and that the cookie survives a studio restart. With persist_session_cookies off, the test fails as it should.
a_crash_drops_only_its_source now also kills the shared helper and reloads the source, which draws again. Only that half was checked, with the renderer half removed, since the renderer half fails first.
New CEF test a_page_that_closes_itself_fails_alone: a page that calls window.close() fails, and the red page beside it in the same helper keeps drawing. It fails without the fix.
Under load, with more CEF instances at once, CEF's GPU-process fallback sometimes stalled a page past the 20 s wait, or aborted the browser with "GPU process isn't usable". That is the known GPU-fallback quirk, and merging the two profile tests into one cut how many instances start together.
Follow-ups
a_crash_drops_only_its_source already fails on NixOS on main, and still does here at the same step. A renderer crashed by chrome://crash as the first URL fires neither on_render_process_terminated nor on_load_error, so the page stays Starting (checked with debug prints). With the renderer part removed, the helper-kill and reload half passes. Suggested quest: detect a renderer that dies during the initial navigation, and test a crash after commit.
Possibly a flag to choose the profile directory, so two studios can both run browser sources.
Review
Codex gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, via quest review. Head a3f6458e5d97dfeabbd25547f6dc7ef9f0e6e24a: no findings.
After the maintainer's round-4 decision, a new session started (see the Design change: comment):
Round 1 (ea8f5dc): the helper posted one UI task per command, so a stalled CEF UI thread could still pile up reloads. Fixed in e3e8a55: the helper keeps the same coalescing outbox and posts one task at a time.
Round 2 (e3e8a55): a release could drop at the helper's input bound. Fixed in 52abb05: owing releases moved into the shared outbox, so neither queue drops one.
Every page runs in one helper, CEF's browser process, on a profile kept in
the user's XDG data directory, so cookies and logins survive a reload and a
studio restart. CEF lets only one process hold a profile, so per-page
helpers could not share one; each page still renders in its own renderer
process. A crash of the helper fails every page, and the next page to start
starts a new one. The studio stops the helper on quit so the profile is
saved and free for a relaunch, and a second studio on the same profile
fails its pages saying so.
Sources gains a Reload button for browser sources, which restarts the page.

Stopping the browser helper joins the new Engine::stop on quit, and the
browser tests take the bus's mixer. The two profile tests become one, so
fewer CEF instances start at once.

Browser sources keep a profile
feat(scene): browser sources share one persistent profile, and reload
Nov 4, 2026
…tops
A page closed past the backlog closed ahead of its queued Open, leaving an
orphan page. The writer now closes a deferred page only once its Open is
written, and drops an Open whose page already closed.
The reader held a Helper clone, whose slot kept the instance alive, so
dropping every owner never ended the socket. It now holds only the device
and queue.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Browser pages now use a shared helper process and persistent profile, with commands and events routed by page ID. The studio resolves the profile path from XDG_DATA_HOME or HOME, stops the helper during engine shutdown, and provides a Reload action for browser sources. Restarting a source removes its feed so the next sync opens it again. Tests cover reload, profile persistence, concurrent profile use, and crash handling.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to f28ea
Resolve the shutdown and startup failures before merging: an unresponsive browser helper can prevent quitting, and missing profile environment variables prevent startup even without browser sources. Saturated page queues can also strand source threads, while a scheduling-dependent test can fail intermittently.

Shared helper architecture: Moved from one helper process per page to a single shared helper process managing all pages. The helper now accepts Start followed by Open(id, ...)/Close(id)/Input(id, ...)/FrameRate(id, ...) commands with page IDs in events.
Persistent profile: Browser profile is now stored in $XDG_DATA_HOME/moq-studio/browser (default ~/.local/share/moq-studio/browser) with mode 0700, cache_path set, and persist_session_cookies enabled. Only one studio can use a profile at a time; a second instance fails with a clear message.
Crash isolation: Page crashes fail only that page; a crash of the shared helper fails every browser source. The helper is started on first page and runs until quit, restarting on next page after a crash.
Reload functionality: Added Reload button for browser sources in the UI that calls Sources::restart(), closing and reopening the page in the shared helper.
Engine lifecycle: Engine::stop() now stops the browser helper and waits for it to exit so cookies are flushed.
Tests: Added cookies_survive_a_restart test and enhanced a_crash_drops_only_its_source to verify helper crash recovery.<!--

[P2] Report a page that closes itself (rs/moq-scene/src/browser/host.rs:673–680). A top-level page can call window.close(). CEF then invokes on_before_close, which removes it from PAGES but sends no event to its route. Since the shared helper stays alive, run keeps waiting for that route's end and the source remains Live with its last picture, or Starting if it had not painted. The old one-page helper exited on close. Send a page-ended event when CEF closes a page so its route stops and clears its picture; test a self-closing page alongside another still-open page.
[P2] Make page opening cancellable when the command queue is full (rs/moq-scene/src/browser/run.rs:240). If the helper stops reading and input fills the bounded queue, this synchronous send blocks while browser::run is being polled. Removing or reloading that starting source cannot reach the enclosing cancellation branch, so its source thread and routed audio strip remain alive; repeated reloads can leave more blocked threads. Queue the Open through a cancellable path that preserves Open-before-input and cleanup ordering, and test a full queue with a removed starting page.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the helper, routing, source-thread lifecycle and tests, including an independent pass and upstream CEF/Chromium close handling. I did not run CEF, the browser tests, or a stalled-helper reproducer.
Stopping the browser helper stays last in Engine::stop, after the
recording-aware thread joins.

A page that called window.close() left its source waiting on a helper
that stays up for the other pages. The helper now reports every page CEF
closes, which the studio ignores for one it closed itself.
Opening a page waited on a command queue that input from a hung helper
could fill, so removing a starting source could hang its thread. Only
input now counts against the backlog; opens, closes, frame rates, and
paint answers always queue, in order, which also retires the deferred
close bookkeeping.

Assert the page ID in the frame-rate and input checks.
These assertions match only the command variant and the rate or text. A command sent with a wrong page ID still passes. The test page keeps the default ID, so the test does not detect routing changes. Give the test page a non-default ID, then assert that ID in each command.

Update the page-routing assertions in `a_new_frame_rate_reaches_the_page`:
assign the test page a non-default ID, then assert that ID in the `FrameRate`
and `Input` commands. Preserve the existing rate and command-order checks.
Cover cross-page cookie sharing in cookies_survive_a_restart.
cookies_survive_a_restart uses one source, "page". Its reload and restart checks reuse the same source name and profile path. A regression that gives each source its own profile would pass both checks. No other test in this file uses cookies or storage. A second Studio::on on the same profile fails with "another studio," so only a second source in the same studio can exercise cross-page sharing.
Add a second source that uses the same serve URL. Both pages then share an origin. Two constraints apply:
Studio::on gives every source the same full-canvas rectangle, and Studio::center samples one pixel. Both pages cannot show their colors at the center at the same time. The second page needs its own observable region.
Studio::on starts all sources together. The second page must load after the first page has set login=1. Otherwise it can render red for a timing reason.
Assert that the second page renders GREEN on its first load, before either page reloads.

The revised public Status::Failed documentation says a broadcast source keeps waiting for its broadcast to return, but a terminal error returned by Driver::broadcast reaches Driver::stop and leaves that source failed until it is edited or restarted.
Callers relying on the documented status contract may wait for recovery that will not occur.
This can occur when: A broadcast source encounters a terminal subscription or invalid-path error rather than a recoverable end of a broadcast instance.

Both findings from the automated review of a84759f are fixed in 835eec2:
[P2] Report a page that closes itself: fixed. on_before_close now sends Failed(id, "the page closed itself") for every page CEF closes. For a page the studio closed, its route is already gone, so the studio ignores the event. New CEF test a_page_that_closes_itself_fails_alone runs a page that calls window.close() next to a red page in the same helper. It passes on NixOS, and fails without the fix ("closer never failed").
[P2] Make page opening cancellable when the command queue is full: fixed by removing the wait. Only input counts against the backlog now; Open, Close, FrameRate and Painted always queue, in order, without blocking. Removing a starting source therefore never hangs on a stalled helper. a_helper_that_stops_reading_blocks_nothing fills the input backlog against a helper that has stopped reading. It then checks that Open and Close still queue and arrive in order. This also retires the deferred-close bookkeeping from round 1.

Reviewed changes
A page that closes itself now fails its own source: HelperLife carries the page's Paged, and on_before_close reports Event::Failed, so window.close() stops that route instead of leaving it waiting on a helper that stays up for other pages. A studio-initiated close still removes its route before sending Close, so the event is ignored.
Opening and closing never wait on a full queue: run::Commands replaces the bounded SyncSender with an unbounded channel plus an input-only counter, so only Command::Input counts against BACKLOG while opens, closes, frame rates, and paint acks always queue in order. This also retires Routes::closing and the deferred-close bookkeeping.
Tests: added a_page_that_closes_itself_fails_alone, and reworked the stalled-helper test to assert Open-then-Close ordering past a full backlog.
…pile up
While the helper read nothing, every Reload queued another Open and Close,
URL included, which the helper replayed once it recovered. What the studio
has yet to tell the helper now waits in an outbox that coalesces each page's
open, frame rate, and close: a page closed before its open is written never
opens and drops its pending input, so what waits scales with the pages
open. Input stays bounded by the backlog.
The browser profile is also made owner-only when it already exists, and the
macOS and Windows quest states the shared helper's crash scope.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Design change: at the round-4 checkpoint the maintainer chose "Fix queue here". In ea8f5dc, the FIFO command queue is replaced by a per-helper outbox (rs/moq-scene/src/browser/outbox.rs), which the writer takes in batches:
Each page's open, frame rate, and close coalesce.
A page closed before its open is written never opens, and its pending input goes with it.
Input stays bounded at 256.
Each batch writes every page's open ahead of anything else for that page.
While the helper reads nothing, what waits now scales with the pages open, not with how many Reload clicks there were, and the helper never replays obsolete pages. The shared helper and its crash isolation stand. The review session restarts with quest review --new.
The helper posted a UI task per command, so a stalled UI thread held one
task, and one URL, per reload, and replayed pages the studio had closed.
It now keeps the same coalescing outbox the studio does, with one task at a
time posted to apply it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A release past the helper's own backlog dropped, though the studio had
already sent it, leaving the page holding a key once its UI thread caught
up. Owing releases now lives in the outbox both sides share: past the
backlog a release is owed, once per page and button, key, focus, and
pointer, and taken after the input before it. The studio's page state and
writer no longer track owed releases.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)
Reviewed head 52abb05, comparing the substantive changes since a84759f separately from the main merge.
The prior self-close and blocking-open findings are fixed: a self-closing page ends its route, and opening/closing now uses the nonblocking coalescing outbox. Two follow-ups remain:
[P2] Synchronize the blocked-writer regression test (rs/moq-scene/src/browser/run.rs:454–462). Sending 4096 inputs does not prove the writer has filled the socket: input after the 256-entry backlog is dropped, so backlogged can be true before the writer runs at all. If it first takes a batch between open(1) and close(1), that legitimate Open is sent and the test panics at line 470. Establish that the writer is blocked before exercising pending-open coalescing, rather than relying on thread scheduling.
[P2] Stop the outbox if the reader thread cannot start (rs/moq-scene/src/browser/run.rs:196–205). If spawning browser-events fails after the writer starts, the error path drops the external command handles but never calls stop(). The writer retains its own clone and waits forever in outbox.next(); killing/dropping the helper cannot wake this condition variable. This leaks a thread and socket on startup failure and can compound thread-resource exhaustion. Stop the writer on this error or give the queue producer-disconnection semantics.
Overall, the production cancellation and page-lifecycle fixes address the previous review; fix the startup cleanup and deterministic-test setup above. Verification limits: GitHub-only static inspection of routing, both outboxes, helper scheduling, cancellation and tests. I did not run CEF or tests. The current Check workflow was still running.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
✅ No new issues found. The shared-helper/profile rework and the coalescing outbox hold up; the only open follow-ups are the two already reported at 52abb05, which this review does not repeat.
Reviewed changes
Shared helper, per-page IDs: Start configures one helper, and Open/Close/Input/FrameRate plus Texture/Pixels/Audio/Failed now carry page IDs, with Fatal for helper-wide failures.
Persistent profile: every page shares $XDG_DATA_HOME/moq-studio/browser (owner-only, created or re-chmodded), so cookies and logins survive reloads and restarts; a second studio on the same profile fails its pages with a clear reason.
Coalescing outbox: new browser/outbox.rs batches opens, newest frame rate, bounded input, owed releases, paint acks, and closes, shared by the studio's writer and the helper's UI thread; a page closed before its open is written never opens.
Reload action: Sources::restart, State::restart, and a Sources-panel Reload button restart one page without editing it.
Lifecycle: Engine::stop shuts the helper, joins its reader, and waits for exit so the profile is flushed; per-page closes, self-closes, helper crashes, and reader failures are routed and reported separately.
Tests: cookie persistence across reload/restart and profile contention, self-closing page isolation, crash isolation plus reload, and outbox ordering/coalescing unit tests.
… stalled-writer test
A reader thread that failed to spawn left the writer waiting forever in
the outbox, holding its thread and socket; that path now stops it.
The stalled-helper test assumed the input flood had blocked the writer,
which the backlog does not prove. It now has the writer take an open
larger than the socket buffers first, so the writer is stuck before the
reloads are queued.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Both P2s from the automated review of 52abb05 are fixed in a3f6458:
Stalled-writer test (run.rs:454-462): fixed. The test no longer infers a stuck writer from backlogged. It first queues an open with a 16 MiB URL, far larger than the socket buffers, and waits until the outbox is empty, using a test-only Commands::is_empty. At that point the writer has taken that open and cannot finish writing it until the test reads, so the reloads queue behind a writer that is certainly stuck. The test then checks that it receives Open(0) and then only Open(100). It passed three times in a row on NixOS.
Reader spawn failure (run.rs:196-205): fixed. If the browser-events thread fails to start, Instance::start now calls commands.stop() before returning the error. The writer then leaves outbox.next() and shuts the socket down, and the helper process, dropped with the closure, is killed.
Codex round 4 on a3f6458 found nothing. just ci, Linux clippy, and just render-sw give the same results as before; a_crash_drops_only_its_source still fails as it does on main.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.

Reviewed changes
Reader-spawn failure now stops the writer: Instance::start calls commands.stop() when the browser-events thread cannot spawn, so the writer leaves outbox.next() and shuts its socket instead of waiting forever, and the never-run closure drops Process to kill the helper and free the profile. This closes the previous P2.
Stalled-writer test made deterministic: a_helper_that_stops_reading_blocks_nothing now queues a 16 MiB Open and spins on Commands::is_empty() before the input backlog and reload churn, so the writer is provably blocked on the socket and pending-open coalescing is exercised without relying on thread timing. This closes the previous P2.
Merged main: the audio-stall/health work came in; the only PR-side delta is the README Sources row now carrying both main's stall sentence and the PR's Reload sentence, and the browser code is unchanged by the merge.
Both prior findings are addressed: reader-thread spawn failure now stops and wakes the writer, and the stalled-writer test waits for a large Open to be taken before checking reload coalescing. I found no new actionable issue in the follow-up.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the startup path and test; I did not run CEF, tests, or failure injection.

Problem
Each browser source ran in a helper of its own on a fresh temporary profile, so no cookie or login (an alert service, a chat widget) survived a restart of the source or the studio. Worse, only
root_cache_pathwas set, which leaves CEF in incognito mode. A failed page also stayed failed until the source was edited.Approach
localStorageand IndexedDB logins. Every page now runs in one helper, CEF's browser process. The socket protocol gains page ids (Start, thenOpen/Close/Input/FrameRateper page; events carry the id), and the studio routes events to each page's source.$XDG_DATA_HOME/moq-studio/browser(~/.local/share/...), mode 0700, withcache_pathset so it lives on disk andpersist_session_cookieson.Engine::stopstops the helper on quit and waits for it to exit, so cookies are flushed and the profile is free for a relaunch. A second studio on the same profile fails its browser sources with "another studio is using the browser profile ...", and the first opens no window for it.Sources::restart). It closes and reopens the page in the shared helper, so it also recovers a failed page or a crashed helper.browser/outbox.rs), which the writer takes in batches: each page's open, frame rate, and close coalesce, a page closed before its open is written never opens and drops its pending input, and input is bounded at 256. What waits therefore scales with the pages open, not with how often they were reloaded, and the helper never replays obsolete pages. A page that closes itself withwindow.close()fails its own source. A writer that loses the socket shuts it down, so the helper exits instead of running unheard.Impact
Alternatives
reload_ignore_cachefor Reload: it cannot recover a page whose renderer or helper died, so restarting the source covers every case with one path.Decisions
Choices made without asking
Testing
outbox::tests, which need no CEF, cover the following:run::tests::a_helper_that_stops_reading_blocks_nothingchecks that 99 reloads against a stalled helper leave only the newest page to open.just cion macOS passes.Linux workspace clippy, with and without the device, codec, and
ceffeatures, is clean on NixOS.just render-swon NixOS: everything passes except the renderer half ofa_crash_drops_only_its_source, which already fails onmain(see Follow-ups). Five further runs of the browser tests gave the same result each time.New CEF test
cookies_survive_a_restart: a page served on loopback sets a session cookie. The test checks that the cookie survives a reload, that a second studio on the same profile fails with "another studio" while the first keeps drawing, and that the cookie survives a studio restart. Withpersist_session_cookiesoff, the test fails as it should.a_crash_drops_only_its_sourcenow also kills the shared helper and reloads the source, which draws again. Only that half was checked, with the renderer half removed, since the renderer half fails first.New CEF test
a_page_that_closes_itself_fails_alone: a page that callswindow.close()fails, and the red page beside it in the same helper keeps drawing. It fails without the fix.Under load, with more CEF instances at once, CEF's GPU-process fallback sometimes stalled a page past the 20 s wait, or aborted the browser with "GPU process isn't usable". That is the known GPU-fallback quirk, and merging the two profile tests into one cut how many instances start together.
Follow-ups
a_crash_drops_only_its_sourcealready fails on NixOS onmain, and still does here at the same step. A renderer crashed bychrome://crashas the first URL fires neitheron_render_process_terminatednoron_load_error, so the page stays Starting (checked with debug prints). With the renderer part removed, the helper-kill and reload half passes. Suggested quest: detect a renderer that dies during the initial navigation, and test a crash after commit.Review
