feat(studio): repair recordings a crash left unfinished at launch - #48
A recording a crash or power loss left unfinished is repaired at the next launch, without asking, into <name>.repaired.mp4 beside the original (numbered if a file already has that name), which stays untouched. The repair shows at the top of the Health panel and in the log.
Every file a recording writes, the program's and each source's, gets a sidecar marker <name>.mp4.unfinished, created exclusively and locked before the file itself is created. The marker is removed once the file is a regular MP4 or removed as empty. A crash, or a write that failed before finishing, leaves it.
At launch, Recorder::new scans the recordings directory for markers and repairs each file on the runtime's blocking pool, so a long file never holds up startup. moq_mux::container::mp4::repair computes the finishing writes from the original, read-only; the studio copies the original (a clone on APFS, btrfs, and XFS), applies them to the copy in a .repairing* directory of its own, syncs, claims a free name with create_new (<name>.repaired.mp4, else <name>.repaired (n).mp4), and renames the copy over that empty claim, so a repair never replaces an existing file. The marker is removed afterwards, so each file is repaired once.
The recording holds an exclusive lock on its marker while it records, and a launch claims the same lock for as long as it repairs the file. A launch skips any marker whose lock is held, so neither a second studio recording into the same directory nor a second studio launching at the same time touches a file mid-recording or mid-repair. A marker is removed before its lock is released, and whoever locks one checks with same-file that its path still names the locked file, so nobody takes, and later removes, a marker another recording created at that name after the first was removed.
SUFFIX now budgets for the longest derived name ( (n).repaired (m).mp4), so a long scene or source name still fits within 255 bytes with its marker and repair.
New dependency: same-file 1.0.6 (already in the lock file through other crates), since std cannot compare file identities on Windows and reading a locked marker through another handle fails there.
README: the Recording section and the Health panel row describe the repair.
Choices made without asking
Repair failures. A file moq-mux reads and rejects (not a studio recording, no header) loses its marker and is reported as failed once, since retrying would fail the same way. A failure to read the original or write the copy (permissions, a full disk, an I/O error) keeps the marker, so the next launch tries again.
Empty files. A file a crash left at zero bytes is reported as "nothing recorded" and its marker removed, but the file itself is left in place, keeping to "the original stays untouched".
Already finished. A file that finished just before the crash, before its marker was removed, is reported as already finished; no copy is written.
Stale marker. A marker whose recording is gone is removed silently (debug log).
Marker lock. Taken with std::fs::File::try_lock, on a writable handle on both sides, as an exclusive lock needs on NFS. A lock error other than contention (a file system without locks) logs a warning and goes on unlocked on both sides: the marker still works, and only the two-studios case goes undetected there. Skipping instead would leave every crashed recording on such a file system unrepaired.
Marker suffix..unfinished rather than .part, which browsers and download tools use, since a launch removes a marker whose recording is gone.
Repair name taken. Numbered like a recording's own name, rather than keeping the marker and failing, so the repair still happens. Published by claiming the name with create_new and renaming over the claim rather than a no-replace hard_link, which FAT and exFAT drives refuse.
No fsync of the marker. The marker and its recording are created together and the recording's own fragments are not fsynced either, so the marker is not synced on its own. This keeps the start click free of a disk flush on the UI thread.
Repairs run in the background, not before the window opens, so a large file on a file system without clones does not delay launch. Quitting mid-repair waits for it, since dropping the runtime joins its blocking tasks.
Validation
New tests in rs/moq-studio/src/record.rs:
launch_repairs_a_crashed_recording: records the program and sources mic and mic.repaired, copies the directory mid-recording as a crash would leave it, and checks that a launch writes a regular MP4 repair for each holding about the 1 s written, numbering the mic's ( mic.repaired (2).mp4) rather than replacing the other source's original, leaves each original byte for byte, removes the markers, leaves a finished file alone, and that a second launch repairs nothing.
launch_leaves_what_it_cannot_repair: an empty file, a non-recording, a marker without its file, and a file whose marker another recording holds.
a_long_name_is_cut_to_fit also checks the marker and the largest numbered repair name.
a_taken_marker_is_numbered: a marker already there and held, as a launch would, makes a new recording take the next name.
a_replaced_marker_is_not_its_holders: a marker removed and recreated at its path is no longer its holder's.
a_repair_that_cannot_read_tries_again: an unreadable file keeps its marker, and once readable is retried.
launch_repairs_a_crashed_recording also makes every original read-only (Unix), since the staging copy takes the original's permissions.

Review
Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, head b234dc9: no findings (round 6).
Round 6 covered f0683b2, which answers the online threads on cd3df49: the staging copy is made writable, the directory is synced after the repair's rename and before the marker goes (Unix), the scan keeps a marker when try_exists errors, a failed recording lets go of its marker's lock but keeps the marker, and the marker identity test is Unix-only. Declined, with replies on each thread: syncing the marker's directory entry, an identity check in clear, moving the scan off launch, a dedicated repair thread, failing on non-contention lock errors, and reclaiming abandoned staging directories.
This round also addressed the review posted on 4b18b0b (OpenAI P1 and two P2s, pullfrog's four threads): a repair never replaces an existing file, the marker is locked before its recording exists, a launch opens markers writable for NFS, and markers end in .unfinished.
Earlier rounds:
Round 4 on c2330de: reading a locked marker through another handle fails on Windows, so every new marker failed the identity check: fixed in 9475db5 by comparing file identities with same-file.
Round 3 on 9ca1482: a marker's existence does not prove the holder owns it (a launch removes it, another recording recreates the name): fixed in c2330de and 9475db5 by checking file identity after locking, on both the recording and the launch side.
Each recorded file gets a locked sidecar marker, `<name>.mp4.part`, removed
once the file is a regular MP4 or removed. At launch the recorder repairs
every file whose marker nobody holds into `<name>.repaired.mp4` beside it,
in the background, leaving the original untouched, and reports each repair
in the Health panel and the log.

Walkthrough
The recorder marks active recording files with .unfinished sidecars. At startup, it discovers eligible marked files and repairs them in the background into numbered .repaired.mp4 copies while preserving the originals. The Health panel displays repair outcomes. The README documents the behavior, and the quest work list and repair specification are removed.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b234d
Repair can delay startup on a slow recordings directory, and several narrower crash-recovery risks remain. Resolve or explicitly accept these risks before merging.

[P1] Never overwrite an existing recording with a repair (rs/moq-studio/src/record/repair.rs:200–202). Supported sources named mic and mic.repaired produce neighboring … mic.mp4 and … mic.repaired.mp4. Repairing the first renames over the second, destroying that original recording; the next repair can then treat the replacement as complete and remove its marker. Publish without overwriting, retain the marker or select another name on collision, and test that both originals remain intact.
[P2] Secure ownership before publishing the marker (rs/moq-studio/src/record.rs:552–558). Another launch can claim the visible marker before this recorder locks it; WouldBlock is logged but recording proceeds. Startup can delete the marker as empty or repair while recording continues, leaving a later crash undiscoverable. Publish an already-locked marker or otherwise guarantee and validate ownership before writing; test the interleaving.
[P2] Open markers writable for exclusive NFS locking (rs/moq-studio/src/record/repair.rs:120–127). The repair claim opens read-only, but Linux NFS requires write access for an exclusive lock. Its error is treated as unsupported locking even when the active recorder's writable lock works, bypassing protection for live recordings and concurrent repairs. Open writable and distinguish unsupported locking from other errors.
Sidecar-based recovery is a sensible direction once publication and ownership protect the originals. Verification: GitHub-only static review; I did not execute repairs or test on NFS.

Caution
A repair can publish over a neighboring source's original recording — deleting the file the feature promises to leave untouched.
Reviewed changes
record/repair.rs: launch-time pass that claims a sidecar marker with flock, applies mp4::Finish to a temporary copy, publishes <name>.repaired.mp4, and records one outcome per file (Repaired/Empty/Finished/Failed).
record.rs: .part markers written at start and removed once a file is final; Recorder::new starts the pass and exposes its outcomes; unit tests cover names, marker lifecycle, and outcomes.
ui.rs / engine.rs / docs: the Recording health panel lists repaired and unfinished files; README and the quest record the feature.
The repaired bytes match the pinned moq (ffcb7cd) mp4::Finish/repair contract: truncate at moov_offset, write moov, refill the reserved free box at mdat_offset, and Ok(None) for an already-complete MP4. Static GitHub-only review: there is no moq submodule here, so I could not build or run the tests; quest context is not installed in this environment, so I read AGENTS.md, REVIEW.md, and the base CONTRIBUTING.md directly.
…io's own
A repair is written in a directory of its own and published under a name it
first claims with create_new, numbered when taken, so a source named like a
repair (`mic` beside `mic.repaired`) keeps its recording. A recording's marker
is created exclusively and locked before its file exists, so a launch that
claims it first removes it rather than repairing a live recording. A launch
opens a marker writable, as an exclusive lock needs on NFS. Markers end in
`.unfinished` rather than `.part`, which downloads use.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Each marker holds a token no other holds, and whoever locks one checks that
its path still reads that token, so a recording or launch never takes, and
then removes, a marker another recording created at the same name after the
one it opened was removed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Windows refuses a read through another handle while the marker is locked, so
every new marker failed the check. Compare file identities with same-file
instead, which opens the path without data access, and fail loud when the
identity cannot be read.

P1, never overwrite an existing recording with a repair: fixed in 9ca1482. The repair is published under a name claimed with create_new, numbered when taken, with a test where sources mic and mic.repaired crash together.
P2, secure ownership before publishing the marker: fixed in 9ca1482 and 9475db5. The marker is created with create_new, locked, and checked to still be the file at its path before the recording exists. Tests: a_taken_marker_is_numbered, a_replaced_marker_is_not_its_holders. The exact interleaving with another process cannot be driven from a unit test.
P2, open markers writable for NFS: fixed in 9ca1482. Other lock errors still count as a file system without locks, since the recorder cannot lock there either (see the repair.rs:120 thread).

Reviewed commit 3a74ac4. No new actionable findings in the changes since 4b18b0b, accounting for merged base changes. The previous overwrite and marker-ownership findings are addressed, and repair claims now open markers writable for NFS locking. Collision and marker-identity tests cover the key regressions. The separate-copy recovery approach is reasonable with these changes.
Verification: GitHub-only static review. I did not run builds, tests, or Windows/NFS scenarios.

record::create / Marker::create: the marker is created with create_new and locked before the MP4, numbering on WouldBlock, AlreadyExists, or an identity mismatch, and removed once the file settles.
Marker::named compares same_file identities instead of reading the locked path, which Windows refuses while the lock is held.
record/repair.rs: the launch scan claims lock-free markers up front, applies mp4::repair's Finish to a copy staged in a unique .repairing*tempdir_in(dir), claims <name>.repaired.mp4 (or (n)) with create_new, and renames the copy over that empty claim; the original is only ever read.
SUFFIX rebudgeted to the longest numbered repair name, with a_long_name_is_cut_to_fit now covering the marker and repair names too.
New tests: launch_repairs_a_crashed_recording, launch_leaves_what_it_cannot_repair, a_taken_marker_is_numbered, a_replaced_marker_is_not_its_holders, a_repair_that_cannot_read_tries_again.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Test gap: the crash fixture copies live files but never deliberately truncates a trailing fragment. A repair implementation that handles complete snapshots but rejects ordinary mid-fragment crashes can therefore pass this test.
The crash-repair test remains green despite failure to recover earlier complete fragments from a realistic interrupted write.
This can occur when: A regression makes mp4::repair reject EOF inside a trailing moof or mdat, while these copied fixtures happen to end at complete fragment boundaries.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Crash-tail recovery is delegated entirely to the unseen mp4::repair implementation. If it rejects an incomplete trailing atom instead of retaining earlier complete fragments, this new recovery path fails on ordinary mid-write crashes.
No repaired copy is produced despite recoverable media; depending on the parser's error representation, the marker is either retried indefinitely or removed permanently.
This can occur when: A crash interrupts a trailing moof header or mdat payload after at least one complete media fragment was written.

Review comments at @rs/moq-studio/src/record/repair.rs:
- Line 56: Move the unfinished-recording scan out of the synchronous launch path
in Repairs::start: run unfinished(dir) on the blocking pool together with the

Preserve the existing repair behavior and ensure the scan result is passed to

- Around line 104-106: Update the recording probe in the repair flow to use a

- Around line 67-71: Move the repair loop in the runtime.spawn_blocking closure

- Around line 134-138: Update the TryLockError::Error handling in Marker::claim

- Around line 222-227: Associate each `.repairing` staging directory with its
recording and reclaim abandoned directories only when the repair path can prove
exclusive ownership of that recording; do not treat Marker::claim as proof when
file locking is unsupported. If ownership cannot be established, leave the
staging directories untouched. Preserve the existing staging and apply flow in

A repair makes its staging copy writable, since the copy takes a read-only
original's permissions, and syncs the directory after publishing it, before
the marker goes. A launch keeps a marker it cannot tell is orphaned. A
recording that fails lets go of its marker's lock, so another studio's launch
can repair it. The marker identity test runs on Unix only, as Windows keeps a
removed name taken while a handle to it is open.

Reviewed the delta since the last pullfrog review (3a74ac4): f0683b2 plus a conflict-free merge of main (fce9c4c) that only carried main's own changes.
Released a finished file's marker lock while keeping the marker, so a launch can repair a recording that failed mid-write while its studio is still running. Verified that no path writes after record/remove returns, so the released lock never exposes a live file.
Made the repair's staging copy writable before writing it: owner write on Unix, the read-only attribute cleared elsewhere, since fs::copy inherits the original's permissions (0444 -> 0644, never world-writable).
Synced the recordings directory after the repair's rename and before the marker is removed (Unix; a directory handle needs FILE_FLAG_BACKUP_SEMANTICS on Windows), so the new name is durable first.
Kept a marker when the launch's try_exists probe errors instead of deleting it as stale, so a transient error does not lose the repair.
Made the crash-repair test use read-only originals and limited a_replaced_marker_is_not_its_holders to Unix, since Windows keeps a removed name taken while its handle is open.
